Do not recommend. They refused to let me pack my own items, so I had to pay them extra to pack. They threw things together in large boxes, damaging fragile items. Boxes mislabeled. Furniture damaged. They claim the movers on the receiving end unpacked (they did not). They were happy to take my money with reassurances they would take great care, and once I contacted them about the problems, they did not respond in a timely manner. Still trying to resolve this issue, as they do not follow up. They asked for photos to prove that the movers on the other end did not unpack because "they are getting 2 sides to the story". Why would I contact them about that if there was no problem? I have better things to do with my time than deal with their stonewalling. Very unprofessional company. My Love affair with Kona Trans. is over! Today They showed up at the wrong time, and they just dropped and left! I was told that I would have a PM drop off and that I would receive a call b4 showing up(nothing). I live 45mins away from Kona Trans. Terminal and yet the driver (nor) the Kona Trans office called! It's @10 am, and I had to STOP what I was doing and spent time outside in the Strong Sun and Heat tearing down something that I wasn't going to do until dark! My family had used Kona Trans to unload PODS at the port in Hilo a few years ago without a hitch, so when we were moving from HPP into Hilo, I called them again to arrange a move. when the "crew" showed up, they announced that they were not professional movers, but "warehousemen", but could do the packing of the van and move me well. At this point, I had no choice. First, the van was a small one instead of the large one I had requested. As I said, the crew were not trained in household moving. So, I walked them through the house instructing them of what should be handled in what ways. The experience was a disaster!! They failed to disassemble completely the hand carved sectional sofa as instructed and before I could catch them in the act, they had run it into the door, porch posts, railing and had it hung up on the porch railing. I made them take it the rest of the way apart and they then could maneuver it down the stairs, but by then it was too late. One nice piece of furniture down and more to be damaged. They didn't use packing blankets, either theirs or my heavy ones I told them to use. They didn't take shades off lamps, didn't pad items in the van, tossed boxes off the railing to guys on the ground below, and even managed to steal a hand carved, one-of-a-kind table lamp. I was busy elsewhere and couldn't watch their every move. The van wasn't the one I asked for, so there were 3 trips into Hilo instead of one, or possibly two, which cost me more time and money. Anyway, there were, conservatively calculated by receipts, $7800.00 in losses and damages. Kona Trans, after 6 months of back-and-forth has offered me $441.00. The management were awful to deal with and obviously didn't care. I urge anyone making a move on the Big Island of Hawaii to use anyone but Kona Trans. If you do, you'll regret it. read more

Reading through the last two reviews, both of which were for 1 Star, just astonishes me, as my experience couldn't be further on the spectrum. If you are contemplating a household move, Kona Trans household division has been nothing but stellar in my opinion. I couldn't ask for any better actually. Our customers have expressed their gratitude that deliveries are happening in the time windows I schedule with them. Communication has been excellent, deliveries have been consistently on time, and we even get a courtesy 30 minute call ahead confirming estimated arrival time. Our driver is always the same person, and his warm and friendly demeanor really helps set a good impression, especially with customers who are doing business with us for the first time. The company that I work for has recently made a switch to Kona Transportation to handle our equipment deliveries and removals in Kona. It has been an incredibly positive experience for us. Just finished with Kona trans. They hauled our container, unloaded a vehicle, and put the contents of said container into our storage unit. We had lots of stuff- and extra big and heavy difficult objects! They did an AMAZING job! They were professional, clean, and courteous! They were so good at maximizing the storage unit space to fit everything inside! If we had done it we would have had to get a second unit! I can't say enough good stuff about them. I needed to move a washer and dryer to storage NOW! Clint at Kona Transportation was considerate and willing to help. He got me a truck and team first thing the next morning. The team was there a little early and brought the W&D down from the third floor. When the team was putting the washer into the storage space, the face of the washer window got cracked. Now, it could have been all bad from here but IT WAS GREAT. The team took photos and documented the damage on the invoice, and said they would communicate with the office. Clint in the office provided the necessary form and was prompt and responsive when I returned it. They asked me to set up the repair call at my convenience to get the window replaced and assured me they would pay for it. This company clearly has customer service and honesty as part of their values. Clint is definitely living the values. He has been honest, communicative and active in getting the damage resolved. So many companies try to find loopholes but not Kona Transportation. Clint was up front when I called (before the team could report back) that he would confirm with the team, and when they did report, he was all about making it right. Kona Trans was responsible for delivering our new kitchen cabinets when they arrived by barge in Kawaihae. Communication was excellent. I was checking in daily as I have an aggressive construction schedule, and never once did they seem annoyed and were always courteous, respectful, and very helpful. Everything went so right with our delivery and THEN some: We live in a large condominium complex that doesn't have easy access for 'Big Box' trucks trying to make deliveries; they can only deliver to the front of the property and then items have to be hand-carried to the units. When Kona Trans called to schedule our deliver of a patio seating set, we told them we would meet them at the front gate when they arrived. As it turns out, the deliverers arrived early within the range the dispatcher had given us and they tried to call my cell phone from the front gate ... twice. And both times they left voicemail messages -- but our concrete structure often blocks cell phone reception, so my phone didn't ring. But they didn't give up ... after patiently waiting for 40 minutes, one of the deliverers braved the complexity of our property and arrived to our door and simply asked if we were expecting a delivery that we needed help bringing to our condo. He still had a full day of deliveries ahead of him and he wasted 40 minutes of it waiting for my return of his calls, but he was calm, had no edge to his voice and no attitude other than he was there to help us. So the two deliverers, Lyle and Kea, hand-delivered the huge boxes that contained our multi-piece patio along the maze of driveways, parking garage and sidewalks until they reached our apartment. But their thoughtfulness didn't stop there -- they uncrated the contents, carried them to their ultimate destination on our back lanai, and helped us set them up. And throughout our encounter with them, they were personable, authentic, and true representatives of the Aloha spirit that the Big Island is noted for. When we called Kona Transportation to let them know how satisfied we were with Lyle and Kea and how well they represented the company, their supervisor was genuinely thankful to get the feedback and promised he would forward our gratitude to both Lyle and Kea because he knew they would be pleased to receive our appreciation. Every step of the process, from our initial call informing us of the pending delivery, to the delivery itself, and finally to the feedback call with the supervisor involved respectful, reasonable and responsible people -- there wasn't one 'business-as-usual' interaction at all. Last month I used Kona Transportation for a local move after my condo went into escrow. I'd 'staged' the condo with furniture from my home and as escrow was coming to a close I needed to remove my personal items. I originally had the move scheduled for one date, but then my Realtor notified me that escrow looked like it was closing sooner than expected. Although I didn't think I'd be successful in making the change, I phoned Kona Trans to see about making the change as was met with a "Sure, no problem!" On the date of the move they called when on the way, as promised, and were EARLY, which was great news for me - they quickly and efficiently loaded my items into their truck and I met them at my house for the unload, which was also quick and efficient. The employees arrived on time and even tho the move was literally across the street, they all were very efficient and moved my heavy items, take down of beds, re set, couches and done in 3.5 hours. a couple of the furniture was scuffed but given the arrangement of the home it was understandable,, hoping I can rub out the marks. Kona Trans has a well oiled Scam machine going on. They send people up to your house to evaluate what it would cost to ship your house, give you a quote, then take your belongings, put them in their truck(s), and after they are loaded onto the Matson ship, ( so all your stuff is gone, no turning back, you've booked your flights, etc...) they will charge your CC, in my case 35 % higher from $8000 to $ 12,500!!!, and when you call them to ask what happened, they will say that they weighed your belongings in some unknown fashion, that you have no way of disputing, and claimed that it was more than what they thought, and in their fine print contract, they get you, because the quote was just an estimate! So they can charge you whatever they want , basically an open ended clever money pit... You can dispute the charges with your CC die, but they have the open ended contract, so fat chance of getting the added charges taken off ! Buyer beware!!! Cheers! read more

Kona Trans was the Hawaii-leg of a California to Hawaii move (of a 40 foot container filled with our household goods). Kona Trans assisted me in finding a mainland company who could coordinate both ends, and did a fantastic job on the Big Island end. They received the container from the port, stored it for a few days, delivered it to our property, and unloaded everything. Because of some heavy tools in the container, Kona Trans organized to have a forklift available at our house to move the heavy items. Their moving team (led by Shane) were very careful with our property (making sure the trucks and containers didn't damage our property, and making sure to take off their shoes before walking on our hardwood floors), friendly, and efficient. Note: I was very organized, which they were able to accomodate (both with respect to the inventory of what we were moving, as well as specifically where we wanted each item placed in our garage or house). For the record, the move coordinator was True North out of Seattle, and the California end (packing and loading the container) was by Silicon Valley Movers. read more

Had a large crated freight item delivered yesterday by Gary - he was amazing and capable. I was impressed by what one guy can do. He took care of my needs for delivery beyond expectation. Also had a long conversation about office staff about the logistics of getting freight over from Australia, which while not Kona Trans business, except the last leg, the staff person I talked with was completely willing to share knowledge about the whole process, answering numerous questions. Please stay away from this company! The latest review on here is from 2015. FYI YELP: There are two sites on Yelp for Kona Transportation, and are the same business. The address, phone numbers and website address are exactly the same. Kona Transportation is violating the terms of service by having two Yelp sites. It is also interesting that the company manages to complain and remove all their 1 Star reviews (read below for reviews that were not recommended. This company low-balled the original estimate and after picking up my belongings, gave me an estimate after pick-up over THREE times the original price, committed forgery on a phony inventory document, would not answer clarifying questions, showed up nearly two hours late on the pick-up date, promised my household goods would arrive in a week (actually took nearly a month) and made my move a complete nightmare. Do not believe a word of what Lyle P. says. I have an appointment with the PUC, and will be securing a lawyer. The PUC stated I have a very strong case with plenty of documentation. If I can save ONE person from going through the nightmare I went through, it will be worth the time. I do not know how the owner and his unscrupulous employees sleep at night. Hands down the most dishonest people, and stressful move of my life. read more

Thirteen years ago we moved from California to Hawaii. The moving company that we used at that time was excellent; we know what a good, professional move is supposed to look like. This is how we know that the job performed by Kona Trans was inferior to say the least. The movers were supposed to take two days to pack up the house and then put our things on a container heading to our new home on the mainland. The first day was for packing things into boxes, the second day was for putting the boxes into the container. They did not finish putting everything into boxes the first day, and so had to rush through packing the container on day two. On that first day, the mover in charge took me from room to room asking me what stayed and what was to be packed. A methodical professional, right? Problem was he didn't relay what I'd told him to his co-workers and when I unpacked the boxes at our new home, I found garbage that should have been tossed packed in some of the boxes. The other problem on packing day was that I kept asking if all of the items would make it onto the container. I kept hearing "don't worry it will fit". This is significant because I had a priority list of stuff I could leave behind and not be sad about and stuff that I really wanted to keep. Well you guessed it, they ran out of room on the container and items that we really wanted to keep had to be left behind because the stuff that we could easily have sacrificed was already on the container and they wouldn't pull them out to make room for the priority boxes. Some of these items were not cheap to replace and when I later found the garbage packed in some of the boxes I was really fuming. One thing they wanted to leave behind was a box filled with irreplaceable old family pictures. Parents who had passed away, wedding pictures, etc. were in that box. I insisted that this box had to make it onto the container. They decided to ship this and one more box via air freight as a compromise. The boxes that were shipped air freight arrived about 1 week after being packed. We were delighted to get some of our stuff early until we opened the boxes. Everything in one of the boxes was smashed to bits. Who puts a TV, crock pot, and assorted ceramic items on the bottom of a box then puts a 30 lb. cement garden statue on top of those fragile things? Well, Kona Trans did just that. When I called they tried to blame it on the air freight company even though Kona Trans had been the ones who packed it. They assured me that I would be reimbursed. Well that was a joke! Yes, we got some money but only a tiny fraction of what it will cost to replace the items. When our container arrived in another 2 weeks we were shocked at the shoddy job of loading that Kona Trans employees did. They placed wood furniture (1 table and 1 desk) inside the container without any padding whatsoever! Both items have large gouges and scratches all over from sliding them across the container and from the jostling that they got during transit. Other items inside boxes were smashed, broken in two, bent, etc. I dreaded opening up boxes because of the possible carnage that I would repeatedly find. And, yes you guessed it, we got only a little over $100 reimbursement for over $1,000 worth of damage! The crew that unpacked the container at our new home were appalled at the deplorable job the Kona crew had done. These people are not only rank amateurs, but displayed a complete lack of care for our possessions. The only thing that makes me happy is the knowledge that I will never have to use them again.
