We were traveling down the coast and found this place on Yelp, all other nearby restaurants didn't rate that well. After walking on the pier we were kinda worried about finding a decent spot to eat. So glad we gave it a try. Walking in there were like 3 other parties walking in so that was encouraging. It gave off Hawaiian/tiki vibes and was inviting. They have a 3 course special 4-5 pm for like $30. My husband and I picked that, I had the teriyaki chicken bowl and he had bbq ribs. The salad had a delicious dressing and had to eat every morsel. Both the main courses were really good. My grandson ordered the steak and ate every bite of the whole meal. Kai (the waiter) was very nice and gave us some advice on what to see along the route. On a recommendation we went for dinner. We were seated in a corner booth. Very Tiki atmosphere, pleasant Service was prompt, polite and forthcoming with recommendations. Crab cakes were good with a chutney and a dipping sauce. Rum and coke, a nice Hawaiian light, was a good mix. New York strip steak , came as ordered, with vegetables and potatoes, a tad over done, was huge and delicious. Poke ahi bowl, too large to finish and wine, equally good. No desert tonight, next time. I grew up in the 831 and before Kona this place was PF Chang's! For my dad's birthday I was excited for all of us to try something new since we've never been here before. They really nailed a "tiki theme"! I was very surprised with the ambiance, decorations, and how friendly the staff was! We started with the Pupu Platter, which is perfect if you want to try a little bit of everything. It came with calamari, coconut prawns, and baby back ribs, plus dipping sauces that paired really well with each item. The coconut prawns were crispy with just the right amount of sweetness, the calamari was tender and perfectly fried, and the baby back ribs were fall off the bone tender with a delicious glaze. It was a great appetizer to share. For my entrée, I ordered the poke bowl, and it was so fresh! The tuna was high quality, the toppings were colorful and fresh, and everything balanced together perfectly. We couldn't leave without dessert, and I'm so glad we didn't! The presentation alone was worth ordering. The dessert arrived surrounded by dramatic dry ice, making it feel like a whole experience before even taking the first bite. Came in for dinner. Everyone was very nice and we were seated right away was good. There is a cute little gift shop area when you walk in. Our waitress Regina was fine. She did have some recommendations but was a little scatter brained. She would forget about our drinks so had to constantly ask for refills. Then she even said she forgot to put in one of our appetizer orders. ‍ The food was okay and good portions and flavor just a little different. The Walnut Shrimp was good. The complaint was that my husband ordered a baked potato with pulled pork with bbq sauce on the side. Then when he got it there was ground pork instead of pulled pork and bbq sauce on top which he was not a fan of. Which was why we ordered it on the side. The drinks were good and atmosphere was good. Totally enjoyed this Hawaiian/Asian Fusion restaurant after a round at Poppy Hills today. One of the members of our group suggested it and glad we tried it. They have a fairly extensive menu and cocktail lists. Service.was very good, too. Sort of felt like we were on vacation in Hawaii here! I enjoyed the seafood pasta special today and my coconut pink colada drink. The others in my party also enjoyed their salmon and sand dab dishes and cocktails as well. Give it a try. 7/11/25 Zach and I decided to get dinner at Kona Steak and Seafood. We didn't realize that it was part of a mall, otherwise we would have drove, but we walked instead (and that was our mistake because that day it was quite cold)... Anywho, our reservation was for 6:15pm on the patio since we had Coco with us. The hostess was super friendly and walked us over to the outdoor patio. Mateen was our waiter that evening and he was also super friendly. Here's what we got: - salmon fillet (for Coco) - kona pupu platter (to share) - szechuan eggplant with tofu (mine) - loco moco (his) - dessert for me: one scoop of vanilla bean ice cream We got the pupu platter made for two people. What I liked about this pupu platter was that nothing on it tasted greasy. One particular standout was the shrimp. Even though it was fried on the outside, it was perfectly cooked inside. The entrees were quite delicious. Coco loved her salmon fillet. I initially set my expectations low because I wasn't sure how the szechuan dish would taste since Kona isn't strictly a Chinese restaurant. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it actually tasted. The rice had butter in it, making it more rich; the eggplant and tofu tasted great. Zach enjoyed his loco moco as well, saying that it reminded him of his first loco moco when he tried it in hawaii. For dessert, I indulged myself on a delicious scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. First time visit for us and I didn't think I need a reservation given It's in the Del Monte shopping center. Wrong well almost wrong because the owner was there and he turns out to be a great guy who seated us almost immediately. If you've been missing Hawaii just go to Kona and get a refresh. Cute Tiki Gift shop on front leads to large very full bar. Why you ask? The drinks are great gianormous, and very affordable. I had a martini I almost couldn't finish. Haha. Extensive menu ( tons posted on Yelp) offering traditional Island food, steaks, burgers etc. You will find many things to try and share. My experience at Kona was wonderful! My girlfriends and I came here for dinner on a girls trip. We ordered a variety of drinks and food to share. Everything was so full of flavor and delicious. I really liked the steak, scallops, and brussel sprouts. My least favorite dish out of the ones we ordered was the poke, which was a little underwhelming. Service was great. The wait staff were super nice to help us with group pictures. And since we were celebrating my friend's birthday, they gifted us some chocolates at the end on some dry ice which was pretty darn cool. My husband chose Kona Steak & Seafood for his birthday dinner, and I am so glad he did! This was our second visit, and once again, we had a wonderful experience. From the moment we walked in, the hostess greeted us warmly and made us feel welcome. The atmosphere truly reminds me of a restaurant in Hawaii, it has a tropical vacation like vibe. Our server was attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout the meal. We shared the Coconut Shrimp appetizer and the Steak Bites appetizer, and both were fantastic. I ordered the Surf & Turf special, which was a generous portion and absolutely delicious. The filet mignon in my Surf & Turf was good, and the bearnaise sauce that accompanied it was stellar. My son ordered the Truffle Lobster Mac & Cheese and a Caesar Salad, and he enjoyed both dishes. To make the evening even more special, the staff surprised my husband with a complimentary birthday dessert with dry ice, which was such a thoughtful touch and fun show. I've driven by Kona Steak & Seafood for years and always wondered about it. To be honest, I figured it was just another Hawaiian-themed restaurant. I was completely wrong. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with smiles and genuine hospitality. Our server, Paula, was a class act and great at what she does. We loved the poke chips and lilikoi buns. My wife had the halibut, my daughter had the chicken nuggets and fries, and I had the ribeye. The Mai Tai and Chi Chi were outstanding. The highlight of the night was when Paula surprised our daughter with a shaved ice dessert and dry ice presentation. It was her last day of 2nd grade, and we were celebrating the start of summer before she heads into 3rd grade. The smile on her face was priceless. Earlier in the day we experienced some poor customer service elsewhere, so this was a great reminder of what true hospitality looks like. Great food, great drinks, and even better service. Our most recent visit I asked for a margarita (as the signature cocktails I've had before were unbalanced or too sweet) and I was disappointed that it tasted like pre made mix, could not taste any tequilla. My cousins I were super hungry after shopping at Dem Monte shopping and decided to stop here for a late lunch! It did not disappoint our hungry tummies! We were at first skeptical since it's in a mall and my dad's family is actually from Hawaii, but Kona nailed it with their kitschy ambiance, over-the-top drinks, and delicious food. We will be back. The bartender Mitchel was particularly good. He was attentive, unassuming, with compelling but soft spoken charisma. We overheard later that he had previously had his own restaurant in Carmel and had sold it due to long hours. I felt bad for him. The one sore point was a couple that sat next to us. I could tell from their vibe that they were not like us. I greeted them warmly and joked with them about my drink which they were eyeing, but they remained cold and aloof even as they ordered the drink I had ordered for their second round. They refused to give me eye contact. They then proceeded to talk about hunting rattlesnakes and owning a gun very loudly for 20 minutes with Mitchel, both of whom have roots in Alabama. They were literally shouting into my ear. I know the restaurant cannot control their customers but I wished my neighbors could have some courtesy to have their conversation about their private matters PRIVATELY. I could've started making out with my dyke partner right there at the bar but why would I subject someone clearly conservative to such outward displays of personal ideology that are also clearly politically motivated? The places we usually frequent usually attract more quiet clientele with less bravado and perhaps less insecurity. This is all to say, yes go to Kona's Zen Den for their all day happy hour but be ready for tourists who seem intent on pressing their animal killing, gun toting values on to you. We had the best experience here last Friday. We had just arrived in Monterey from LA and decided to dine here for our first meal. Kona is located inside an outdoor shopping mall so it was fairly easy to find parking. Luckily, we got there just in time to get a table for 5 before they got busier. One of the first things I loved was that they gave my kids coloring packets, not just a kids menu to color on. This kept them busy until the food came. Our server, Regina, was amazing. She was friendly, attentive, and even brought the kids a little surprise at the end of the night. It was candy on dry ice. My kids loved it! This was a great start to our trip. The food and drinks were both good and most importantly, they made us (a family with 3 young kids) feel welcome. The Hawaiian decor and shaved ice were also a hit with the kids. What a FANTASTIC restaurant!! We discovered it a year or so ago and now, whenever we are in Monterey, we head here. The owner/maitreD is so friendly. He's very accommodating and always makes us feel welcome. Tonight, we got the comfy couch table up front. Awesome. There was a three course deal for the first hour the restaurant was open and we each picked that. We started with the Kona salad which was tasty and loaded with amazing cheese, apples, lettuce, tomatoes, and a very light poppy dressing. Next up were our entrees. I had the walnut shrimp. A TASTE SENSATION. Tempura shrimp with pineapple, broccoli, green onions, and rice. It was the best meal I've had since....well, since the last time I was at Kona! My guy had sea bass and chips and he loved it. We also ordered the Lilikoi butter buns. They were served warm and were tasty and so soft! I've been to Kona steak and seafood twice. I admit - I was scared the first time. It's a touristy Hawaiian themed restaurant in Ana pressure touristy area, I assumed it had to be mid food at bougie pricing. I walk in and the slightly kitschy decor had my alarm bells going off. But, I have to admit - what a little gem. Everything I've tried there has been at least good and a lot was great and the prices were reasonable once you consider where you are. Ribeye steak for $47 includes veggies and potatoes - cooked perfectly, good portion and delicious. The baby back ribs were tender and tasty. The veggie sides even deserve a mention - most steakhouses get away with wilted sad veggies because they're an after thought but Kona's veggies are fresh and cooked great - crisp and tender. The desserts are fun too - the lava cake is quite a spectacle. Tastes great too. I'd say the French onion soup was solid but not outstanding. More of a 4/5. And the service is friendly attentive and prompt. Nothing to complain about at all and we were made to feel welcome despite being a last minute large party. This is a great stop when passing through Monterey - easy to get to, lots of parking, good service, tasty food, and reasonable prices. read more

Lilikoi Butter Buns ($9)-- came with 8 small rolls of buns with passion fruit butter and salt on top. we thought the passion fruit would make the butter sweeter but it was more bitter than we thought. The bun was nice and soft. Seafood Fettuccine ($36)-- the fettuccine was slightly on the softer side but the flavor was good. Plenty of seafood, and it was indeed a huge plate. My friend and I, two petite girls, decided to split the dish. If you come from Bay Area and are looking for a seafood dish, you might as well. Mimosa's ($6.75) -- as first-time drinkers, we ordered the mimosa with mango sauce. we are working on our alc tolerance. pineapple creme brulee ($14)-- its actually creme brulee inside a pineapple (picture). The sugar was nice and crunchy and the brulee was creamy. When you scrape the sides of the pineapple, it gives the dessert a new perspective. Don't worry the hollowed out pineapple meat is used in other dishes instead. The berries on the side was the only downer. it was extremely sour. i would suggest seasonal berries instead or orange slices. Right before we left, we met Kona. It is none other than the famous dog that the restaurant is named after, as the owner herself introduced us. Kona and the owners were all extremely welcoming and nice. My friend and I were also able to feed Kona some treats from PetSmart. Very lucky to meet her. Definitely coming back the next time I come to Monterey Bay. Inside is a huge, darkly-lit and festive dining room that gives off Island vibes. On weekends, its completely packed at 6PM. The food here reminds me a bit like the Roy's from Hawaii. For starters, Mai Tai 1944 is a solid cocktail but a bit more citrusy than I'd like. I prefer stronger coconut rum flavors. For food, the ribs appetizer is excellent for sharing with super-soft meat. We each had two fish entrees. The Szechuan Salmon is cooked perfectly and the sauce pairs with it well - savory, sweet, and not overly spicy. Wife got the misoyaki seabass which is smooth and flaky and not nearly as rich as typical butterfish. Its definitely meatier than typical butterfish. Our son's dish was the grilled span and cheese sandwich with crispy fries. I think he liked the cheesy parts and probably isn't ready for the spam yet. During a weekend in Monterey with the family to celebrate my parents' 40th wedding anniversary, this spot was recommended by my brother and his wife, and it did not disappoint. Easily one of my favorite meals of the trip. We made a reservation and all that was left was pretty early (like before 5pm early...), so I initially didn't think that I was going to be that hungry. That definitely changed when the food came out though. My main dish of ribeye steak with a fantastic butter sauce was so good that I ate that whole plate faster than anyone else could finish their meal at the table...I also got the Elvis Presley (bourbon/whiskey based drink) that was both complex, strong, and smooth, and the table got some Asian meatballs and Lilikoi butter bread (they were honestly kind of average...). We definitely appreciated the service (Christian was very friendly and attentive), and being able to accommodate baby and stroller. This spot was definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's well worth it for special occasions!
