The cioppino bowl was huge. My husband only ate 1/2. So much seafood in it. My special was bass and shrimp. Served with pineapple salsa, guacamole, peppers, rice, green beans and tortillas. It was so good. Only complaint was the green beans. I believe they were Hericovert beans. Just a little too hard. Schooners is at the very top of my restaurant dining list. I have been coming here for the past 6 years and have never had a bad meal or bad service. Overlooking Monterey Bay what more could one ask for when it comes to ambience, it is pretty hard to beat. Service is top notch; pleasant and attentive without being overbearing, great wait staff. A tip of the hat to these unsung heroes. Food--try the Schooners seafood salad, it is packed with crab, a couple jumbo shrimp and Ahi tuna on a bed of mixed greens, sliced carrots and (I think jicama) and it is all married to a soft, delicate, slightly sweet sesame dressing. Arrived for our 12:30 brunch and were seated right away with our reservation. (Highly recommend making a reservation.) The staff was very friendly, from the hostess and waiter to the bus staff. A manager even stopped by at the end to check in and thank us for coming. The oysters and shrimp cocktail were some of the freshest we've had. Came here on a Saturday night for a date because we wanted a nice seafood dinner with an ocean view. We made a reservation the day before and got a table outside on the pier right by the water during sunset. We started with the half dozen oysters and the coastal clam chowder bread bowl. The oysters were some of the freshest I've had and tasted really clean. The clam chowder was New England style without bacon, which I liked, and it was buttery with plenty of clams. The bread bowl had a nice crunch and paired really well with the soup. I got the grilled chicken piccata for my main. The chicken was too dry, but the piccata sauce was really good. It came with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and both were flavorful and cooked well. I also got the China Cove Mai Tai. It was nice and strong. For dessert we got a chocolate cake with ice cream. The cake itself tasted good, but the ice cream was flat, not very flavorful, and too crumbly. This was my second time coming here, and it definitely reminded me why I wanted to come back. We made a reservation for 10:30am and were seated immediately, which was a great start to the morning. The waterfront views are absolutely beautiful and make for such a relaxing breakfast. I did expect it to be a little breezy being right by the water, but it actually got pretty warm while we were sitting outside. Thankfully, the staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of throughout our meal. We ordered both The Plaza Omelet and the Monterey Seafood Omelet, and I would happily order either one again. The Plaza Omelet was packed It was full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and really brought everything together. This place has gorgeous views and is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink on a beautiful day! The cocktails took quite a while to come out, but they were tasty once they arrived. The bread we got was also very good. We didn't have a meal since we were just stopping in for cocktails before dinner, so I can't comment on the food. The only major downside was the scent inside the hotel. It was extremely strong and overly floral, and unfortunately it gave me a headache. Came down to Monterey on a weekend with the family and saw that Schooner's had pretty good reviews for lunch, so we made a reservation for an earlier lunch. I didn't know that Schooner's was in the Monterey Plaza Hotel, so I did have to ask some directions as to how to get downstairs to the restaurant. Arriving a bit early, we did have to wait until our reservation time to order lunch instead of breakfast, but the hotel was quite nice, and we were able to sit on a bench overlooking Monterey Bay. When we were seated, we opted outside to get a nice view, and they do have heating lamps (that were even a little bit too warm) so don't worry about the breeze. I ended up getting the fish and chips, my wife got cioppino, and the little one got some buttered pasta off the kids menu. The fish and chips was amazing...so fluffy and flaky but also had a nice crisp on the outside - probably some of the best fish n chips that I've had! Our little one also enjoyed the pasta, which was basically spaghetti noodles with butter, and we were appreciative that she was given some crayons to entertain herself. Service was excellent as well. Overall, it was a rather fancy, but very nice lunch for the three of us, and I enjoyed being a little bit away from the busy wharf/Cannery Row to enjoy ourselves before the crowded aquarium. We made a reservation for this restaurant for my boyfriend's birthday lunch. This is located inside of the Monterey hotel and plaza. Service was great. We asked for an ocean view table and were happy that they had one available. We ordered raw oysters, focaccia, ceviche, and Monterey cioppino pot. I wish the menu stated that there was cheese on the focaccia since I don't eat cheese. Oysters were fresh. Our favorite was definitely the Monterey cioppino pot. It was incredibly flavorful and a good amount of seafood. Our least favorite was the ceviche. The sauce/juice just didn't match our tastebuds. The chips that came with it were delicious though! We got a bit early before our reservation, and we sat at the bar for a couple drinks before dinner. There was plenty of room and bartenders were super attentive. After relaxing for a bit, we joined the dining room for our reservation. We got a beautiful spot right on the water. Our waiter Hannah promptly came to check on us and get a drink order started. My partner continued to have some very cold coors light like which he appreciated. I switched it up from Prosecco to having a Hugo spritz, which felt very refreshing. We started with truffle fries and a Caesar salad. My partner rated the Caesar salad and the fries assault eight out of 10 on both both very flavorful dressing was fantastic on the salad lettuce was very cold. Good sign of freshness. Moving onto our entrées he had the seafood pasta and I had the cioppino pot. Both very hearty in their portions. I was shown in Photos that cioppino pot I had was overflowing with different proteins from rock fresh to shrimp, clams, mussels, and crab. It was extremely flavorful, definitely one of the best cioppino I've had. My partner thought his seafood pasta was cooked perfectly also had plenty of protein to satisfy him. Only room for improvement was that it seemed our server got pretty busy with some other tables getting all set at once. First of all, Schooners is located inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel (I didn't know so I struggled to find it lol). We were able to find street parking easily but there is also a public parking lot nearby. As for the restaurant, the ambiance is amazing; it's right next to the water so the view is great! Try to sit outside if you can, but the inside is not bad either if you're by the window! Service was great, everyone was nice! For food we ordered the Schooners Tower, Dungeness Crab Pasta, Monterey Cioppino Pot, and the kids chicken tenders and fries. This spot is tucked at the end of Cannery Row in a hotel, making it easy to access from Monterey Bay Aquarium and not too busy. I'd rate this as 3.5-4 stars. I was a guest at the hotel for a conference and had dinner here on two occasions. The view from the patio dining here is exceptional! But... The night I checked in was a little disappointing since there wasn't anyone at the host stand to assist. A couple servers passed by, made eye contact, and didn't greet me or indicate that someone would be out. I went ahead and opened the main door and still wasn't greeted as 3 servers spoke to each other on my right. Typically I'd walk out, but it was convenient so I headed to the bar. The bar staff was much more welcoming and friendly, and I ordered their poke bowl. I wish I took a photo since I really enjoyed this! A couple nights later I had dinner in the restaurant area, and service was much better. Staff seemed really attentive and helpful! I ordered a cup of clam chowder and the tostada with poke per my servers suggestion. The clam chowder was delicious - creamy and filled with whole clams! I don't know if people still say bomb.com but it's def warranted here. It would be a shame to order a burger when in Monterey so I made sure I ordered something from the ocean on the other side of the glass of the seat next to us. I got the Cioppino, wife got the Crab Pasta and the kids got Fish N Chips + Chicken Tenders. I was very surprised to see a generous amount of crab in my soup. At some places, you get a claw and check that box off but not here. In addition to the real crab, there was a few giant shrimp, mussels, clams, fish, and calamari. Man...everything was very fresh and delicious. I would even have to probably say the best I've ever had! The soup was seasoned to perfection and not too tart. My wife's crab pasta was also very good! I shared mine with her and we swapped for a bit just to sample other dishes here. The kids plates were also high quality as expected from this nice restaurant inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel. To make my bday weekend even better I was able to score a spot right in front of the hotel which isn't easy since it was a non-raining Saturday. It was a hefty portion though and I liked the cornbread muffin in lieu of an english muffin. The avocado toast was much more flavorful and I added on the poached eggs (2 for $6). The pickled onions packed a punch and the tiny bottles of tabasco added the right amount of heat. I was interested in the juices but was told that it was not freshly squeezed, so decided against it. It was for a group of seven (3 kids and 4 adults), and it was the perfect choice to make the day special. The restaurant is beautiful, and we loved the amazing views paired with lovely weather. We had to ask for directions once we arrived at the hotel, but it was worth finding. We also really appreciated the complementary valet parking for two hours with our reservation. The service was excellent -- our server was friendly, attentive, and really helped make the occasion feel memorable for the whole family. The food was tasty overall. We ordered the fish and chips, clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and the sea bass tacos. The clam chowder was delicious and paired wonderfully with the fresh sourdough, while the sea bass tacos were flavorful and a real highlight. The fish and chips tasted great with good seasoning and fresh fish, but it arrived a bit soggy by the time it reached our table. It was still enjoyable, though I wish it had been crispier. Having planed a trip to the area a few months in advance, I happened to catch an episode featuring restaurant in this area and saw a familiar face. After watching it and seeing a familiar face, I knew a visit here would happen. Having a wonderful dinner the night before, I made reservations earlier to have lunch on a Saturday here with friends who joined me for the rest of my trip. We were greeted by Jesse who also greeted me at Coastal Kitchen the previous evening next door. We were seated in the outdoor patio area with a full view of the bay on an overcast early afternoon. When we sat down to study the menu, one guest mentioned wanting to order the everything but we exercised restraint. He liked the fries a lot. They have high chairs for children and also coloring paper and pencils. The food was amazing and portions were generous. Food and the views! Just wow! We got there around 9am on a Friday morning, no wait. We chose to sit outside on the patio closest to the end so we could have some nice views of the bay. It was such a beautiful day too, no clouds in the sky. I had a sweet tooth that morning so I ordered the Belgian waffle with a side of eggs and bacon. You get 4 big slices of bacon and I honestly wanted to eat them all. Great quality bacon! The waffle paired well with the strawberries and cream. I'm a big coffee connoisseur and the coffee served there is also rich and so satisfying I had to ask what they were brewing. Our server was pretty busy but checked on us when he could. Before anything else is said, it must be noted: get the Warm Dungeness crab dip. Among all of the great dishes my partner and I sampled this was the standout -- warm, cheesy, garlic-y, and chockfull of a respectable amount of crab meat scooped onto soft, buttery bread -- I would come back to Schooners for this dish alone. Schooners is a cute, waterside restaurant partially hidden inside of a Cannery Row hotel that comes adjourned with heated patio seating and crashing Ocean waves. Nothing we tried was disappointing, whether you're looking for pasta, pork ribs, or ceviche, there is a dish, and a strong drink, for anyone in your party. We had mentioned in our reservation that we were celebrating a 7 year anniversary and the staff was very hospitable, friendly, and even brought out a little brownie dessert on the house. My husband got a short rib harsh, and it had generous serving of meat, which was super tender. He ordered it with poached eggs, and everything was a perfection. I got a Dungeness crab benedict but my order got mixed up twice but our server Oscar made it all right, so kudos to him. we came here on Tuesday morning, so it was not very crowded; nice relaxing atmosphere. read more

Made reservations for an early dinner at 545p on a weeknight. Got pretty busy after 6p and they are severely understaffed with one waitress covering the whole patio. So service was slow and we didn't finish dinner until after 7! They do a great job of heating the outdoor dining though so you can enjoy the awesome ocean views! Food wise was pretty mediocre for the price. Oysters 3.5/5 These were just ok oysters. Nothing to write home about and the mignonette was just ok. Also had shells in some. Ceviche 3/5 Had bell peppers in it. Made the flavor off and def would've been tastier with lime. Also needed more salt. Cesar salad 3.5/5 Salad was okay as well. Needed more anchovy flavor in the dressing and just no seasoned enough. Grilled octopus 2/5 The octopus was not cooked well leaving it chewy and mealy. The cream sauce clashed with the red sauce. Would not get again. Scallop entree 4/5 Tastiest thing we ate, cooked well and seasoned well. Short rib entree 3.5/5 Short rib was super tender but needed more salt. Bell peppers again were added to this dish and really really clashed with the flavors. Mashed potatoes were nice and buttery. Overall can't put a price on the convenience if you are staying at the hotel but otherwise I'd go explore elsewhere for food. read more

Came here for the view, and honestly, that's what carries this place. We sat right by the water and it's hard to beat that setting. Ocean, breeze, sunset creeping in. Easily a 10/10 on atmosphere alone. It's the kind of spot you'd bring someone when you want the moment to feel a little special. Food, though, didn't quite match the setting. We ordered a mix of dishes including the seafood platter, pasta, and a salad. Presentation was solid, but flavor felt a bit flat across the board. The seafood was fresh enough, but nothing stood out. Pasta leaned oily and heavy, and the salad felt like something you'd expect from a much more casual place. Overall, around a 6/10. Service was decent. Staff were polite and checked in, but it didn't feel particularly attentive or memorable. No major issues, just nothing that elevated the experience either. Around a 7/10. The biggest miss was cleanliness. We found dead flies in our water, which immediately takes you out of the experience. For a place at this price point and location, that's something that simply shouldn't happen. End of the day, this is a place you go for the view, not the food. Great for a drink, maybe an appetizer, and enjoying the ocean. Just keep expectations realistic if you're coming for a full dining experience. read more
