He made the experience feel personal and unhurried, which is exactly what you want when you're enjoying a meal with a view like this. This is for breakfast and for take out. You can get the food to go, in our case to take back to our room since we had a dog with us. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant. I know yelp shows differently but the hotel and restaurant are clear about this. You can have your dog in the lobby bar as long as they're not up on the furniture. Delicious! I had the fog lifter omlet, it had goat cheese, greens, onions and red peppers. Delicious, nutritious, and came with a big green salad and side of breakfast crispy potatoes. My partner got the eggs Benedict which was really yummy. The ham was a nice thick cut of ham, not a Canadian bacon piece. They were fast, reasonable price, and gave us a little ketchup bottle to go. We did have to call the front desk/concierge to order take out. I had looked through their website and the hotels website and there was no mention take out was possible. Maybe this could be included somewhere? Even if you have to call to order instead of order online, at least say it's possible. Anyway, a lovely breakfast with a lovely view. read more

As a Celiac, when you say separate fryer for fries... we go straight wild! The service was great and had knowledge of gluten free items. We had the bass, snapper, mashed potato's, and fries. We came here for breakfast and dinner. You definitely get very nice views of the ocean no matter where you sit. There were a good amount of people, but it did not get crowded enough to where you need a reservation. This restaurant is located on the 4th floor of the Monterey Beach Hotel. The lobby bar also shares some of the same offerings as the Lantern Room. The servers we had were super nice and accommodating whenever we dined there. We had oatmeal and a parfait for breakfast. Oatmeal came with brown sugar, candied macadamia nuts, and dried fruit (raisins). I requested a side of whole milk since I like my oatmeal like my cereal. For dinner, the place has a very intimate setting with dim lights and a fireplace. Very romantic with the tabletop lights. The server brings you seaweed chips for the table. Creative concept, but it tasted very bland. We ordered the chicken and steak. The steak did not blow me away, but it was still good. It came with a great serving of salad and fries. The chocolate pot creme dessert however was my favorite dish there. Overall the ambiance and servers were fantastic, but the food was just okay. read more

I've been to The Lantern Room three times now and it never disappoints! The service is amazing and the food is delicious! We usually start at the bar for a cocktail downstairs before our dinner reservations. The view from the bar and restaurant are spectacular! The waiter with the mustache was very rude. I wish I knew his name but they weren't wearing name tags nor did he introduce himself. He asked us what we wanted to drink and when my 6 year old daughter started to order, she began with her meal order but he cut her off and said no, "DRINK ORDER!!!" then he just ignored us and walked away. He did not give her or myself a chance to order at all. The restaurant was 1/3 full so it wasn't even that busy. If AMEX did not provide a breakfast credit, I would have left after that encounter. It wasn't until my husband had to walk up to another waiter and request a different server that someone actually acknowledge and took our order. Come to think of it, the first gentleman was probably only in charge of drinks anyways so I understood if he couldn't take out food order. We went here tonight for a date night and everything was so perfect! Dennis was our server and he had such great customer service and made us feel so welcome. The ambience was amazing, as always, with a cozy fire, and the food was delicious. We had the cioppino and the New York strip. The steak was perfectly cooked and the truffle pomme mashed potato side was amazing! We finished off with the bread pudding, which was the best we've ever had! Mussels appetizer: 10/10 The mussels were freakin HUGE and super fresh. Clean. No grindy sand that can come with unproperly cleaned shell fish. The broth was Thai flavored and very well done. Sooo good. The bread it comes with is the best bread I've ever had period. Perfectly crispy and seasoned. 2 large pieces dips great with the broth. Pork chop: 12/10 The best pork chop I have ever had. Hands down. I never knew a pork chop could taste so damn good. Cooked perfectly. So tender with the perfect meat to fat ratio. The peach topping is the perfect light touch to balance all the heavier flavors. Love. Love. Love. Cod Cioppino: 10/10 The seafood broth is perfectly seafoody and tomatoey. Oysters were really good (meaty, slight brine, neutral finish), Mussels were plump and fresh like they were just harvested, and the Ciopinno with a medley of fresh seafood and fresh local sourdough to provide the perfect complement to accompany the stew. Awful. We were debating whether to brave the dark (6:30 pm) and RAIN and walk over with three kids and a dog from our hotel to eat dinner at The Lantern, but decided "let's go." We got to the restaurant, only to be turned away because "they do not allow dogs." When I informed them that YELP website had specifically said "dogs allowed," PLUS I had indicated that I am bringing my dog to the restaurant on "OpenTable" and that no one had contacted me to inform me that I couldn't do so otherwise. Each morning, we enjoyed breakfast with a beautiful view of the calm waves coming and going. As Bonvoy members, you receive a complimentary continental breakfast each day (coffee, oj, croissant, and fruit). There is also the regular menu to order traditional items - the bacon and lox were delicious. Coffee was a bit bitter for our taste, and adding sugar helps tame it down. The morning crew were all so friendly and helpful. Thank you June for your hospitality, we really appreciate it. For dinner, we experienced the same stellar service with Dennis. Black cod with coconut rice was delicious, and the street corn didn't disappoint. The pasta...eh...we weren't a fan of the macaroni or rigatoni bolgenese. The cheese in the macaroni was really gritty and tasted a bit off (slight sour and salty). The rigatoni pasta didn't have ridges and didn't hold the sauce well (watered down). This restaurant located inside of Monterey Beach hotel checks all the boxes!! We had just checked into our room after a super long drive and the last thing we wanted to do was get in the car again. The Esposo said why don't we just eat on the premises? I took a quick peek at my Yelp app of course and saw an average 4 star rating. Good thing too, as we were all pretty hungry! We were sat immediately without a reservation (but to be fair, it was before 6 on a Wednesday night). We got a table right by the window overlooking the ocean and beach! The service was perfectly friendly without being overly in your face. The food was all scrumptious! Grilled avocado entree and roasted Brussels sprouts for the vegan hubby, flank steak and fries for my teenager, Caesar with grilled shrimp for me, and the most delicious sourdough and butter combo for all of us. Yo top it all off, I noticed the way they situate the seats gives folks who are not right by the window, the opportunity to still see the ocean with a tastefully done stadium seating situation! I'm a local who hadn't eaten here in about 10 years. I really wanted to like it because the view is unbeatable. But unfortunately, that was really the only good thing. My party of 3 arrived at 7pm on a Monday night without reservations. There were lots of empty tables but we still had to wait about 40 minutes for a table (after being told the wait was 25). A nice young man brought us our water and then.... nothing for 15 minutes. No one came by, checked, etc. I finally flagged down the hostess and asked for our server. She said she would get him but returned a few minutes later and said the server was busy and would be a few minutes. Finally, our server arrived (different person than the man who brought water). To his credit he apologized for the wait. He definitely seemed overwhelmed. He took our order but returned several minutes later and said they were out of the rose lemomade we requested. We asked for a different lemonade but then they were out of that too. We just stuck with water after that. Then.... we waited and waited. 30 minutes late the server returns and sees our empty tables. He says, "Oh, they didn't bring your food out?" He returns about 5 minutes later with the food. The food was fine, but nothing special. Our waiter was very kind and apologized several times for all the mishaps. It's too bad they are obviously understaffed. Unfortunately I won't be returning. read more

The ambience is amazing! Overlooking the ocean with all the twinkling lights at night of the little town. The staff was really nice not only my waiter Dennis, (who was the best! So kind and attentive) But the rest of the team around him just really went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable. I had the beet salad, which I loved, and the tomato leek soup. Nice staff, but service was awkward and we kept having different servers who checked on us constantly at the beginning. Prices are set as if a very high end restaurant and the menu looks high end. The food was a major disappointment. One dish was so painfully over salted that it made me pucker and it was the only thing you tasted. Then the replacement dish had spinach that was also over salted. The squid ink pasta was ok, but kinda boring. I've had way better squid ink pasta for way less in Monterey. I am so pleased with how our meal went tonight ! And not just that, but the host Dennis is so great and so lovely to chat with ! We started our meal with a dirty martini and old fashion, had the ceviche for the appetizer and got the branzino and flank steak. Everything was soooo flavorful and tasty ! I think the star rating is pretty spot on. I booked this for the vibes and view but not really for the [brunch] food. It was a cold weekend in October so I wanted to see the ocean without dealing with the elements and it worked out really nicely for us. Pancakes, french toast, baked goods.. they were all okay. The coffee was really yummy and while the service was well intentioned.. there were several "regulars" that were dining at the same time and the conversation with the staff was really noisy. We had a late dinner here around 8pm and was so surprised how empty it was on a Saturday night. We waited for the host to seat us but no one was there. About 10 mins pass and I had to go inside to track down a waiter. We finally get seated and ordered our meal. We started off with oysters which were probably the only things edible. I did not like how they did not loosen them for you. I order the Monterey grandier which is like fried fish and a little gem Cesar salad while my husband got the dry aged steak t bone. The fish was awful --salty, over cooked, and sat on tartar sauce. The tartar sauce made me want to gag and made the fish soggy. The Cesar salad (how the heck do you mess up a Cesar salad???) was inedible. It tasted stale and had an awful taste. They put a ton of pepita seeds that tastes stale. I forced it down because I was so hungry but felt queasy when we left. My carnivorous husband ate a quarter of his steak that was overpriced and over cooked. It was about $90 for a t bone steak!!! Not even a NY or anything. It was such a cheap cut for such a hefty price tag. I was so disappointed. The saving grace was the waiters. They were pleasant. We didn't have views as it was already dark but that was fine. We paid almost $300 for the meal and probably would not come back. read more

It's really good. Expensive. But REALLY good. And don't go by the price when you order because we found that more doesn't mean more. Follow your "gut". For example, the Ora King Salmon is $10 more than the local cod. GET. THE. COD. Someone complained that it was "like a soup" and "didn't get a spoon". ASK FOR A SPOON, DOOFUS! It's a miso soup base! The menu changes often, so study it! When we were there, they had a roasted brussel sprout puree with rice, pomegranate seeds, etc. as a side to a couple of the dishes that I would have paid $20 for just a bowl of to take back to my room. The drinks were cleverly crafted and with a kick. Not watered down. Not for amateurs. Service was super friendly too. Very personable staff here. And, lastly, there isn't a bad view in the house. It's surprising that it doesn't get more crowded. You can get reservations using OpenTable, but odds are you can walk in and get a great seat. read more

The service was excellent, servers were knowledgeable and helpful. I took a gamble and ordered the pork with polenta and apples. Pork is always a bit of a gamble as it gets dry very easily. However is was pleasantly surprised and the pork was absolutely amazing. The entire dish flavors melded together perfectly. The steak tartare was wonderful as well, plated beautifully and wonderful taste.
