I'm a big fan of Konomi's. If you've ever been to a Japanese hibachi style restaurant, they are all pretty similar. Konomi's is in the same mold. You're served soup & salad, and then the chef comes out and cooks on the tabletop grill in front of you. You can also order appetizers and sushi during this time as well. We ordered the crab angels as an appetizer, which were really good. After the soup & salad, fried rice, fried vegetables, and fried noodles are given. You can get extra, or asked for them to be taken off, without issue. While the chef is cooking these, he is usually trying to entertain the guests at the table with different tricks or games. Kids especially love these, as well as first time guests. Repeat attendees may or may not enjoy them as much, especially depending on the personality & creativity of your chef (ours was not as good this past visit, which is why I docked a star from the review). The main courses - usually consisting of some combination of steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, and a few other items - are finishing cooking around this time. They are almost always a great treat. There is also ginger (brown sauce) and yum-yum sauce (pink sauce) at the tables. I love ginger, so a lot of my meal was dipped into it. Afterward the meal, we weren't rushed out and had time to talk with friends. We also discussed the fortune cookie which was provided to everyone and had fun comparing them. Spent approximately $60 on food. Asked for the sashimi to be sliced thin; meaning instead of slicing it once... slice it twice. One wouldn't think this is a big ask. However, my friend was rudely told "we don't do that" and they refused. Refused to slice the pieces one more time. Hard to believe customer service could be that bad, but it is. This review only covers the sushi bar, since I have only been to the teppan side once. The sushi here is excellent. I've never been disappointed with the food or service. The only time I visited the teppan side, I found the quality of the food and show to be equal to many Japanese steakhouses I have visited in the past. This place was ok, but the sushi wasn't the best and the rolls seemed too big. The sushi rolls were so loosely rolled that each bite fell apart as soon as I picked them up with my chopsticks. Was excited to try another sushi place closer to where we moved to, but 'll just go back to Sushi Village next time I am craving sushi. read more

This is simply the best Japanese in the Birmingham area. Sushi is always fresh and grill is delicious too. Amanda is absolutely the best server around. We drive forty-five minutes to eat here a few times each month. My standard is the scallops which are huge, juicy, and fresh. The soup and salad are always tasty too. Ehhh...when we arrived at the restaurant we immediately noticed how sticky the floors were! We decided to ignore that and order a few different dishes. We had sushi, hibachi chicken, fried veggie appetizer and noodle dish. The food was good, but not great. The food arrived piping hot too which was nice. We probably won't be returning. read more

Thursday is a good day to come so it's not too busy. I had the octopus salad, salmon and cream cheese roll, and shared a teriyaki chicken dinner. Their sushi is always good. The teppanyaki chef was fun and entertaining, even though I did not catch the scrimp thrown at me. I always recommend this place. Not too expensive and you get a lot of food for the money. You can also just sit in a separate section and eat without having to go to the chef tables. Plus they also have lunch specials. read more

If you are truly a Japanese food lover, you will agree with the following. If you are not an avid sushi consumer this review will not affect you. The sticky rice on the night was falling apart when I picked it up with the chopsticks, and the sake on top was...not melting in my mouth. My wife had the udon and shrimp tempura that she claimed had "no flavor" but it was alright tasting. This is my very favorite Hibachi grill! I've tried several in Birmingham and Atlanta. Konomi is where I always return. The soup and dressing on the salad is just right here - I guess they set my standard and usually I don't care for it other places. I currently live away from the area but I back often to see family and friends. Konomi is also one of our go to birthday treats! We love to celebrate here. The owner or manager that comes out to talk with us is such a helpful person and also always interacts with us. Makes you feel like he is glad you are there. That is so important to me when going with a small business - to feel like you are wanted there. Also we have a family member with food allergies. She care a card with them listed out. Konomi staff have always been receptive of the dietary needs, prepares her food separately in the back. We appreciate that all of our family can enjoy a meal together in a great spot for families. My nieces and nephew are older now. (when they were very young, they sometimes needed to go outside during the cooking part) as they got older it was a great fun to interact while they saw the meal prepared. My meal yesterday, a special treat just to spend time with my oldest niece, was as terrific as my first there. Thank you Konomi for a great job as always. read more

I've been here several times and it's probably the best spot in Trussville, heck maybe even all of north Birmingham to get some Japanese cuisine. The filet mignon is always delicious. Super tender. I also like the drinks, underrated in house bar. Cosmo was delicious. No tap, but it's not full service bar so understandable. Still, sushi is also great. LOVE the super crunch and lobster. Great service, and who doesn't like those chefs cooking in front of you. They're skilled and friendly here, which I feel like is always a hit or miss at these places, so it is refreshing. Good family atmosphere and a cool place to go for birthdays too. Though I give it 5 stars for the food and service, there is some bad. Can get pretty crowded, and if you have to wait for seating, add like 20 minutes to whatever they tell you the wait is. It's worth the wait, but they don't move the customers along well. Very clean, but bathrooms were suspect when I was there last. All in all, great food, friendly service, and (for Japanese cuisine) pretty quick too. You'll leave full and happy. :) read more

Stopped in for lunch. Was disappointed on a couple of things. First the people next to us had kids and their portions as they paid for a childs fried rice was the same portion as a full paying adult. The food was ok at best but then they put some kind of tomato salsa on the shrimp and then the vegetables that ruined both entrees. $40+ for lunch probably want go back. We decided on sushi takeout for a dark and rainy Sunday evening. I had the Konomi Roll and Vegetable Tempura. The sushi was supposed to feature "spicy tuna" but I detected no hint of spicy that I am used to tasting from sushi I've had at other sushi restaurants in town. The tempura batter lacked seasoning and was very bland. I suppose if you are stuck in Trussville and must have sushi, this will do, but if you have the option to trek down the interstate, then by all means, do so. Excellent. The food here is consistently very good and service is always very good. You get good portion size for your money and the food is high quality. The Sushi chef provides consistent, high quality Sushi, Sashimi and rolls. The owner is generally at the restaurant checking on service and guests. The only thing I would say detracts from the experience is there is not much space between the front door and some of the dining room tables and if people are waiting for tables, the patrons in the entry area can encroach on the seated diners. read more
