I've been wanting to try this place foreverrrr. Unassuming store front. Beautiful art on display. On a Sunday afternoon it was empty. 2 patrons at the bar and 1 table with 2 ppl were already there. The bartender was also the waitress. She was a kind lady but veryyy delayed. It took 20-25 minutes for our drinks. She apologized but they (Yar and Kookoo G&T) were not good or worth the wait. The owner introduced himself to us and was very kind. The complimentary bread was delicious. The appetizers (Kashk Bademjan and lentil soup) were scrumptious!! We scraped the dishes clean. I absolutely enjoyed the Khoresh Fesenjoon!!! My friend who's Persian wanted a different consistency and more nuts. The Bakhtiari was cooked to perfection. I will be back for the food!

Had a friend in from out of town (a smaller city) who wanted to try new cuisine he'd never had before- so we scoped out this spot for Persian. It was a fantastic introduction to some new flavors and the staff was really kind in explaining the dishes and offering recommendations as well. We've had the grilled items before--but really wanted to dive into the stews. Smaller portions but definitely enough to try, especially if you get a few things. We got the kashk bademjan eggplant dish (great with bread and so flavorful), tahdig with khoresh gheymeh, khoresh Fesenjoon (the table favorite for being sweet, sour, tart and a new flavors for us), and ghormeh sabzi. We hung out for a long time to chat and didn't feel rushed to leave, a great spot to take it easy and enjoy a nice meal and chat.

Lamb entree, kashkebademjan (eggplant), zeitoon parvarde (olive, walnut, herb & pomegranate appetizer), azizam cocktail.

Iranian here and went to KooKoo tonight for the first time. Really enjoyed everything we tried. Great neighborhood spot with Iranian stew options (not just kabob). Comfort food that tastes homemade. Staff are super friendly and the owner is incredibly kind. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.

I think what made me love this place is that it has heart and soul. You can tell from the workers and food that they love what they do and take pride in it. I came here randomly on a Monday and can't believe that Ive been living near here for so long. It's Persian cuisine and it's authentic, all whilst being at a reasonable price point. My highlights were the Kashk Bademjan. Perfectly tender eggplant with fresh ingredients throughout. My other standouts were the lamb (friend described it as the most tender lamb she's ever had) and the beef chinjeh which was also tender and flavorful. The rice was such a highlight for us, as there was flavor in both the saffron rice and the baghali polo. Our server was one of the owners and he really just made our experience unforgettable. You could just tell this was his passion and it just made me even happier to support them.

Every thing was great. Food was amazing. Service was great. The owner came out and asked how everything was.

A Persian labor of love by very dedicated owners. We went because our daughter is in Farsi class at college and the professor encouraged the class to find Iranian/Persian places. This is a lovely space just by the Columbia Heights plaza and farmers market. Beautiful paintings and nice music on a Saturday early afternoon. We got there just after they opened and a few more people came in while we were there. The tea is great of course but the food is just exquisite, meticulous, authentic, and delicious. I had a stunning beef and fava bean stew, served in a small ceramic pot and loaded to the gills with fresh dill. Daughter got a super delicate Persian frittata, wife and son both got huge skewer and rice platters. Just tremendous.

It's one of the my favorite Persian restaurants in DC. It offers authentic dishes slow roasted lamb to smoked egg plants with amazing bread. Sabzi is one of my favorites. We were in a group of 8. The service was slightly slower than usual. We believe they had just hired a new server. Every time we had a question about the menu he had to call the owner or the manager. We finally got some good recommendations. We ordered a bunch of stuff as you can in my pictures. It's not as pricey as compared to Rumi's kitchen while delivering the same quality of food. Ambiance is alright. Not too fancy to mention. Highly recommend all their deserts. That was the highlight of our dinner. We ordered a bunch of the desserts twice.

Stopped in alone for lunch as I was in the area and had a gift card. The place was empty, but I was still warmly greeted and seated by a nice Persian man. The place was clean and elegantly decorated with Iranian and French motifs, though not at all gaudy. Ordered the Lamb Gigot (lamb shank) which I was told was a house speciality, and was pleasantly surprised to receive a complimentary platter of pita crisps, bread and sabzi khordan, which included fresh leafy greens, scallions, radishes, walnuts and a couple cubes of feta. The appetizer was light but super refreshing and plenty tasty. The lamb itself was quite impressive. Melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the flavor and moisture of the meat was quite robust, though it may have benefited from marinading in the tomato sauce and spices a little more. On the side, the roasted veggies were also solid, though I would have liked a few more, and the baghali polo was a well-seasoned base. All-and-all, I was very impressed and will be back in the future.

Chelow and ghormeh sabzi in foreground, Jujeh kabob with zereshk polo in background + noon paneer sabzi for the table.

Food - delicious, soulful, hearty, large portions; all the flavor profiles I'd expect from a lovingly prepared Persian meal. Rice was perfect pearl texture. Cocktail - the Azizam was -stun-ning- seriously, elixir of the gods! Service - warm and professional (bonus: server was kheili khosh-ghiyafeh!) Ambiance - upscale casual. clean, cool, collected and not ostentatious Edit: forgot to mention my friends made room for dessert, had the baklava and were blown away. So chuffed I got to share this special cuisine with new people

They do a nice takeout business. I've never actually been to the restaurant. It gets delivered. It's good food and we'll prepared. Chicken and beef kabobs, saffron rice eggplant stew. The menu is great because it not the typical Persian food, they have several items that are unknown to me. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Tucked in a busy corner of downtown, This Culinary gem that effortlessly combines warm hospitality, inspired cuisine, and elegant presentation. From the moment you walk in, the rustic-chic ambiance sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. The menu is a seasonal celebration of locally sourced ingredients, crafted with traditional and authentic ingredients that bring you home. Whether you're planning a romantic evening or a special occasion dinner Five stars, without hesitation. The owner, Yahya is an amazing host and me feel that you are welcome into his home for an authentic Persian experience. Thank you so much!

Great atmosphere, vibes, and hospitality! We had the Mirza Ghasemi, Mast O Laboo, Tehrani, Baghlava, Kookoo Sangria and the Kookoorita - all were delicious and would recommend. The staff were very attentive and friendly, will definitely be coming back!

French/Mediterranean style, the food was pretty good and service was great--our server Julio was helpful recommending us dishes to try and was attentive all night. Escargots was a great start, wasn't a huge fan of the Mini Tartelettes Crab & Caviar overall taste. For entrees, would recommend Loup de Mer au Fenouil (whole branzino) and La Paella de Cassoulet (confit duck leg)--both wonderful dishes, flavorful and huge portions, but note, it's more on the salty side so if you're a savory person like myself, it was delicious! For cocktails, we enjoyed the Nina Rose & Dirty Vodka Martini. The bartender also made really good White Tea shots too! Birthday girl got a complimentary birthday balloon cake with a candle which was sweet. Later in the night, they have a live DJ playing music so it gets popping here!

Upon being seated in a gorgeous booth- we realized we couldn't hear each other as a bday party of 12 people were set up in the center of the restaurant... and they were LOUD... it was so unpleasant I had to ask for a manager. Come to learn - multiple other tables had complained as well.... They offered us another table but it was not conducive for an intimate feeling... so we risked staying hoping they'd wrap it up. The manager was lovely and poured us 4 glasses of prosecco as an apology. The food is spectacular- lots of incredible seafood options included in the 3 course $65 RW menu and not one smell of fishy-ness. The sauces and execution are truly delicious- I've lived in the Mediterranean and in France and this is the real deal. Tons of gluten free dairy options which is so amazing. Service was nice and pleasant - not mind blowing. The manager also comped an additional incredible desert and I appreciated that. By the time we got our check at 9:45, another table of 10 was seated at the center of restaurant... and the noise level started to ratchet up. I looked at our check and realized the extra desert that was comped was actually charged to us ... and it was a $22 desert... obviously asked for a refund which they obliged. The establishment is a year old and I think it's having a small identity crisis still - it's stunning inside with an elegant feel and some people dressed in an impeccably classy manner ... and others ... dressed as though they're headed to the club or a pop concert... by no means should a restaurant with such elevated dining where apps are $20 plus and entrees $40 plus feel like you're having to yell at your dinner companions at 7:30pm. Perhaps they need two seatings & advertise that from 9:30pm onwards large parties and noise levels will exponentially increase .. We may still go back since it meets a lot of our dietary needs with upscale flavors- but I hope they figure out with the ambiance !

It feels upscale without feeling stuffy, which I loved. The service was just as good as the space. Everyone was attentive, friendly, and made sure we were taken care of the entire night. Now the food... We started with the Fehleq and it was delicious. Then came the Batata Hara, which was technically for my cousin because I do NOT like white potatoes but that harissa and toum had me reaching back over to their side of the table. The Brussels sprouts were another win, but the Za'atar pide was absolutely my favorite. I could have eaten the whole thing by myself and probably should have ordered another one. And because apparently we were not done eating, we moved on to the regular menu and ordered the tuna tartare. So good. Fresh, flavorful, and definitely not your basic tuna tartare. The drinks were great too. Everything felt well balanced, creative, and matched the food perfectly. By the end of the night, I was already looking at the menu trying to figure out what I am ordering when I come back. And yes, I am definitely coming back. That said... the mosquitoes were absolutely relentless I got eaten alive. Our server actually offered us bug spray, which I appreciated, but eventually we admitted defeat and moved inside. We ordered off the happy hour menu and basically worked our way through every appetizer, along with the pandora cocktail. The Brussels were SO good, but my absolute favorite was the burger. Honestly, it was substantial enough to feel like an entree. The bread was also really good. Our server could not have been better. He brought my daughter a little cake at the end since her birthday was coming up, which was such a sweet touch and made the whole experience feel extra special. Inside, the decor is super modern and the music was definitely vibing, but not obnoxiously loud. We were able to have a full conversation without yelling across the table, which honestly can be surprisingly hard to find at a trendy DC restaurant. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Ala. Great location, fun atmosphere, really good happy hour food, and excellent service. Just maybe bring your own bug spray if you're sitting outside.

We were seated immediately and had outstanding service from start to finish. We all shared the pikilia (sampler of all five spreads), all of which were delicious with special kudos for the labne and the muhamarra. I got the Adana for my main dish, which was outstanding. The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the sumac onions provided delicious crunch and flavor, the rice was well-done, and the lavash was the perfect accompaniment for the lamb. I also got the Turkish coffee which was solid, and split the coffee cake with a friend. While the coffee cake was fine, it tasted more like a honey or spice cake instead of a coffee cake. I look forward to my next visit to Namak! July 2024: A great addition to the Adams Morgan dining scene! My friend and I recently went here for a weekend dinner and were seated immediately at our reservation time. It was extremely busy when we initially arrived; however, after an initial service snafu (which our server apologized for), we received outstanding service with our dishes coming out in a timely manner. Namak's ambiance is lovely, with blue-and-white tiling, lots of natural light, wood tables, and Greek, Turkish, and Persian decorations. Namak automatically includes a 20 percent service charge and clearly indicates this charge on their menu and receipt, which I appreciated. Namak also has plenty of vegetarian options. My friend and I split the four dishes listed below: Kuru Patlican Dolmasi: An OK dish with well-cooked rice but there was too much salt and there was minimal flavor other than the sauce (there needed to be more sauce). Ahtapot: A phenomenal dish, Michelin-star caliber in presentation and execution, and one of my five favorite dishes I have had at a restaurant this year. The octopus was prepared and grilled perfectly-the best octopus I have ever had. The carrot puree was aesthetically stunning and provided excellent sweetness and freshness, with the pickled onions adding acidity and crunch. The greens on top added further brightness and flavor to the dish. Finally, the blue tilework on the plate below capped off a beautiful array of colors for the dish. It is worth coming to Namak just for the Ahtapot-it was that good. Ispanakli Pide-Another delicious plate, with the pide excellently baked, the right amount of fresh spinach and dill, and the perfect amount of feta to complement the other ingredients. Roasted Cauliflower-While the cauliflower was perfectly cooked, it needed a bit less salt and far more tahini, za'atar, and pomegranate seeds. I would have paid $2-3 more for the dish to make it outstanding if there had been substantial tahini and pomegranate seeds at the bottom. My friend and I split the Anatolian cheesecake for dessert. While the sour cherry compote was delicious, I was disappointed that I couldn't taste the Turkish yogurt and Greek feta. I look forward to my next visit to Namak!
