It was so good, we walked out of there with two bottles, their Kooper Family rye (our very favorite) and their Sweetheart if the Rodeo bourbon (90 proof blended bourbon whiskey). Both are quite drinkable neat. But we also had fun making old fashioneds with both, as well. At just $45 a bottle, it's a heck of a deal. So much better than most is the $50 to $80 whiskeys we buy. Plus, as an added bonus, the Kooper family is very hospitable, informative, fun to hang out with at the bar, and they offer nice tastings at a great price ($16 for three pours), which allows you to determine which bottle is your favorite. You can't get that experience or that level of service at any liquor store! If you find yourself within an hour of this place, you need to visit! While you're in town, checkout the big antique store in Giddiness and have lunch or dinner at Los Patrones. Giddings will soon become one of your favorite towns. read more

I've pasted Koopers a few times and this time I thought I would stop. Super nice decor - nice place to hangout. But on to the whisky's. At 11:30 am on a Tuesday, I had the place to myself. The young lady behind the bar was super nice and let me sample a few offerings. I settled in The Prodigal Son. Smooth, not too peppery. Nice sipper. Once I got home, I poured me a bigger taste. Day trip out to Kooper Family Whiskey on a Saturday after eating BBQ at Truth BBQ. Pulled up on a Saturday. They have parking in front of building and on the side. Entering the building you find the it's set up like a bar, as it's dark inside. Several different sitting areas. They have a menu with prices and different options of what to get like drinks, old fashioned, or flights of whiskey. The person working behind the counter was nice and friendly and answered our questions with a smile. We got a variety of drinks and flights along with some samples. We sat and talked and played a game of cards. Yes, they have decks of cards to use while there. I recommend you do a day trip or stop along your way to Austin as this place is a hidden gem. read more

Found nearby my house... The single barrel, bourbon whiskey. It's got a nice bite to it and what I would describe as high notes. I want to use the words "crispy with a kick" to describe it. Very enjoyable. A little higher alcohol proof at 46%, compared to Crown at 40%. Have really enjoyed it as a straight sipper. Will be trying other offering soon. The sales person at the shop where I found. It was very nice and said he's had to restock it multiple times this week. The bottle looks pretty classy from the art ... to the clear bottom contrasting with the honey brown liquid. read more

I cannot believe that I have not written a Kooper review seeing that I have been a fan for years. I was first introduced to Kooper at the old Bert & Ernie's General Store that has unfortunately closed. Kooper bourbon became one of my favorites after just two sips of my Kooper old-fashioned cocktail. How big of a fan, you ask. Well, I time my trips to - from Houston to coincide with their tasing room hours. This is a family-owned distillery and Mr. & Mrs. Kooper have a great family story. That is grandpa Kooper on the label of their Family Rye. Check out their website. The tasting room is located hard off 290 E between Giddings and Carmine, and it is easy to fly right past it. The tasting room is quite comfortable and perfect for enjoying a cocktail or tasting. Service is beyond fantastic, and their Whiskey concierges are extremely knowledgeable and will guide you toward your perfect bourbon or rye. My two favorites are the single barrel and the Sweetheart of the Rodeo bourbons. The single barrel is a tasting room exclusive. At 92 Proof, 46% Alc. by Vol this bourbon will put hair on your chest as it starts leathery strong and has a citrus finish. I usually enjoy it with one small ice cube. No large ice rocks or balls for me! It is also good as a base for your OF. Sweetheart at 90 Proof, 45% Alc. by Vol. is a smooth everyday sipping bourbon. It is sweet on the nose with a bit of a bite to start but the vanilla, caramel, and chocolate round it out for a great finish. I drink this straight and as a base for an OF. The price point for these bourbons is more than reasonable. Pro tip: Our big box liquor stores, like Total, carry a limited selection of their offerings. read more

Update from my previous review. You know how it is...sometimes you might have had a couple whiskeys and then you write a review and after a while you say to yourself "self, was it really that good?" Well, my self told me that yes it was. im here to say that Kooper's is actually better than I remember. If you love whiskey, and especially bourbon...you simply MUST try this place. Filled with good music, chill folks that can hold a good conversation, and best of all...great whiskeys and related cocktails. About 5 minutes in and you will be going through an evaluation of what you like. 10 minutes in you will have found some tasty treat you didn't know about. Drink some and enjoy the great atmosphere. Buy some and text your friends and gloat. Take some home and serve and amaze them. Good, good stuff here. Leave your attitude at the door and prepare for glory! You gonna looooooove! What a gem!!! My better half offered to stop by on our way to Round Top and who am I to turn down a pre-shopping beverage? Atmosphere: I loved it. Great man cave type feel. Very dark and relaxing with barrels displayed and great lounge seating. What I found really cool was that it smelled just like distilleries we visited a few months back in Kentucky. It was awesome. Service: The bartender Destiny needs a promotion. She was quick, friendly and crazy knowledgeable. She chatted with us for quite a while about the whiskey and had so many great recommendations for things to do around Brenham. We visited 4 of them and they did not disappoint. Whiskey: By no means am I an expert, but this was right up there with some of the great pours I had in Kentucky. If you like Ryes, I recommend the Barrel Reserve and for Bourbon we got a bottle of Prodigal Son. Neither will last long in my collection. Simply amazing stuff they are bottling. Keep it up! I encountered some car trouble (read: a large piece of metal encountered my car), rendering it non-drivable today. I pulled over off of highway 290 where I was en route from Austin to Houston to assess the damage & was working on coordinating towing, Uber, etc and was pretty frazzled. A lovely young lady pulled up and asked if I needed help, if I had towing arranged, etc - she let me know that Kooper Family Whiskey was her family establishment and after we chatted for a moment and I told her I had things in the works, she offered to let me use their Wi-Fi, their AC (it was 105° outside!), to grab a coke, and stay as long as I needed until I had help arrive. That type of kindness from someone you don't even know goes a very long way. Now, I ended up stuck on the phone in my car with OnStar for the next half hour, but Tiffany, if you ever read this, thank you so much for your kindness today. This is one of my favorite Texas whiskies but we finally had the opportunity to visit their distillery in Ledbetter and were left more in love with the whole company. Aside from buying several limited edition bottles that we could only get there, we had the honor of enjoying a flight and old fashioned while chatting with Michelle about the company. While we sat at the bar, we had the opportunity to watch regulars and newcomers enjoy the purposeful atmosphere and great drinks. We were on our way home from the antique shows in Round Top, stopped in this place cause we didn't know what it was (we were really wanting food) and we were told it's a like a small whiskey boutique. Ok that's fine so we sat to rest and have a drink but the rude ass young lady said that we were already drunk and had been drinking.... FIRST OF ALL I hadn't had a drink all day, my elderly and handicapped mother hadn't had anything but water and my veteran boyfriend only had 1 drink earlier at one of the shows. SO FOR THIS B***H to tell me and mom we couldn't be served because we been drinking to much today and my bf he could only have a tiny tiny little sip was extremely insulting and rude. That b***h doesn't know what drunk is obviously nor can she tell if anyone's been drinking.
