    Well, howdy there, folks, Bastrop ! Where the steers are tougher than a two-dollar steak and the sun's hotter than a jalapeño's armpit. I've been slingin' saddles in this dusty ol' town for five years now, and let me tell ya, the Bastrop vibe 'round these parts has gone plumb downhill faster than a greased pig at the county fair. It's about as vibrant as a fresh cowboy boot squelchin' through a fresh hog pie--y'know, that kinda mess that sticks to your soul and stinks up the whole dang ranch. So, I moseyed on into copper the other evenin', hankerin' for a proper drink to wash away the woes of wranglin' wayward longhorns all day. I bellied up to the bar and ordered me an old-fashioned, shellin' out an extra two bucks for that fancy whiskey upgrade, thinkin' it'd hit the spot like a cold beer on a scorcher. Lo and behold, right there on the bar top, they got these itty-bitty, teensy-weensy chocolate nibbles--smaller than a JFK half-dollar coin, I swear on my mama's biscuits. And get this: they're labeled with a big ol' sign sayin' "SAMPLE" in letters bold as a bull's bellow, but tucked away is this sneaky lil' "$3" whisper. Now, I ain't no greenhorn; I've sampled more freebies in my life than a coyote's sampled trash cans. Sample means "try this on the house, pardner," right? Like, here's a taste to whet your whistle, no strings attached! Well, I reckoned it was complimentary, so I popped that puny morsel in my mouth--whiskey-infused, sure, but barely enough to satisfy a field mouse. Tasted fine, nothin' to write home about. Then comes the bill, and holy rodeo, there's a $3 charge starin' back at me like a rattlesnake in my boot! I hollered at the bartender, "Hey now, hoss, why in tarnation didn't ya pipe up and say these ain't free? You let me chomp it down without so much as a 'howdy-do' warnin'?" She just shrugged like I was complainin' 'bout the weather. $3 Sample ! This is an Oxymoron ! This here's a full-blown Texas-sized contradiction! If you're gonna hawk chocolates for three bucks a bite in 2025--when inflation's already got us payin' $10 for a loaf of bread--then slap a sign sayin' "$3 WHISKEY CHOCOLATES, CASH OR CATTLE" and be done with it. Don't lure a fella in with "SAMPLE" and then bushwhack him on the tab. That's sneakier than a fox in a henhouse! Y'all, over this piddlin' three-dollar dust-up, you've lost yerself a loyal, local boot-stompin' customer for life. I've been comin' here regular last 5 years tippin' like an oil well gusher, but no more! I left a tip so subpar after my two drinks, it wouldn't buy a gumball. And let me set the record straight: your whiskey? Sub as a flat tire on a monster truck. I've sampled every drop y'all got--hell, I've got bottles at home I'm fixin' to return faster than you can say "yeehaw." This joint ain't nothin' but a dressed up tourist trap looking like a high-falutin' distillery, preying on folks who don't know better. I won't darken your door ever again, not if the cows come home ridin' unicycles. Never, ever, EVER steppin' foot in here no more! You've rustled up the wrong cowboy, and now I'm takin' my business to a real saloon where samples mean samples and honesty flows freer than the Rio Grande. Adios, amigos--thanks for nothin'!

    Best blackberry margaritas I have ever drank. I have been there several times now and they are always delicious and refreshing!!!! Bartenders a nice. They had live music today and the ambience was great!! If you looking for a neat place to have a drink .....check it out!!!

    This place is great! We happened to go on a live music night which was a blast. The band was a great bonus for entertainment. This place has a unique set up. The music was playing in the back part so if we needed a little more quiet we could go back up front which is a nice design. The drinks were delicious! We were told that all liquor is made in house. We ended up purchasing a Texas honey whiskey after having it in a drink. The bartenders were friendly and very Knowledgeable about their product. Not sure if they serve food. We will definitely be back!

    Service with a smile! Open a tab and try out the moonshines they offers! Stop in and try the pecan and also the sweet potato shots!! You won't regret the cigar shack! Wowwwwww!!! Did I mention the music is ALWAYS wonderful and the place to be any day of the week??

    Adding two stars to my earlier review because I get this place now. Between the Copper Shot bar, the cigar bar (which also has its own liquor bar), the music venue in between, and the amazing bands they book here (several of which have absolutely blown me away, as the Gary Cain band did tonight), you can have the time of your life here, and then be blown away by the fact that you're one of less than 50 people sharing the experience. Is the food good? No. There is no food. Is the service here good? Well... actually, even though there is no wait staff... yes. It is good. Is the vibe good? No. It's not good; it's perfect!

    Effing cool. Retro chic. This spot adds sophistication to moonshine. I used to drink moonshine illegally out of Ball jars from a mystery supplier outta Appalachia. My oh my - how the times have changed. Anyway, I had the honey infused Bastropian, and walked around the joint taking in the art. Tip: do go outside in the back and see the humongous pecan tree that's easily over 100 years old. Check out the photos!

    Our friends took us to this local distillery for some afternoon drinks. We had a fabulous time! The array of shine and local brews were awesome. My friend suggested I get the blackberry margarita. I absolutely loved it- the alcohol wasn't too strong or too light, with the perfect amount of sweetness. My friend ordered the Vader- went down smooth- pecan shine and amaretto coffee liqueur. A must try! Cool decor and plenty of outdoor seating. Looks like they have a stage set up outdoors for local bands Can't wait to come back!

The club along with friends from Dallas and San Antonio headed east after the Texas Independence Day Parade. Libation education started at Derelict Airship AKA Violet Crown Spirits just west of Bastrop. You've hear of strip mall chic? Think business park chic! Quite similar to my friends over at Desert Door in Driftwood. Matt was an excellent host explaining the history behind each of their offerings. Let's start with Absinthe. Banned for many years in the US and parts of Europe, small batch distilleries have been popping up in the US since 2007. The anise flavor is quite strong and it's recommended you cut it with water. I've heard sugar cubes are common as well. Other in house offerings include an Elderflower and Jasmine Liqueur. Girlfriend and I's personal favorite was the Jasmine and we took home a bottle to pair up with other local spirits. A top notch experience from start to finish. Our group is excited to see this company grow. See y'all soon!

Both are quite drinkable neat. But we also had fun making old fashioneds with both, as well. At just $45 a bottle, it's a heck of a deal. So much better than most is the $50 to $80 whiskeys we buy. Plus, as an added bonus, the Kooper family is very hospitable, informative, fun to hang out with at the bar, and they offer nice tastings at a great price ($16 for three pours), which allows you to determine which bottle is your favorite. You can't get that experience or that level of service at any liquor store! If you find yourself within an hour of this place, you need to visit! While you're in town, checkout the big antique store in Giddiness and have lunch or dinner at Los Patrones. Giddings will soon become one of your favorite towns.

    What started as an accidental phone call to a distillery in Luling, Texas, led me to discover a…read moreremarkable hidden gem. KC Cantwell, the self-proclaimed "Chief Bottle Washer," introduced me to Edelbrand--a European-style fruit brandy with over 6,000 years of Austrian mountain tradition. The Austrian Connection In the Alpine slopes, Edelbrand production is strictly regulated by local government. Distillers receive low taxes but can only use water, yeast, and fruit--absolutely no sugar or added flavors. Violators face license revocation, heavy fines, or imprisonment, echoing Germany's Beer Purity Law philosophy. Founder Alexandra Cantwell traveled to Austria's Alpine region, where she discovered that in the town of Stanz alone, 52 distilleries operate--each guarding family secret recipes passed down through generations. These craft producers make only about 62 gallons annually, too limited for chain stores and typically served only in local restaurants. The Austrian tax system is fascinating: officials visit each distillery during fruit season to assess harvest volume and estimate liquor yield. Since taxes are based on fruit input rather than sales, producers are incentivized to optimize their processes for maximum yield. Just before Alexandra's departure, a local master discovered her true mission--bringing Edelbrand to Texas. Intrigued, he arranged for her to be interviewed by seven masters from another village. They believed Edelbrand-making is a cultivated ability, not merely a learned skill. After passing their tests, she trained intensively for two weeks, leaving not as an apprentice but as a certified master. The Texas Operation KC and Alexandra launched their Luling distillery in 2016, sourcing only pristine fruit from across the United States--no rot, bruises, or windfalls accepted. Their fermentation process occurs in temperature-controlled rooms around 65°F. While standard fermentation lasts 3-10 days, theirs extends 3-4 weeks using temperature-sensitive Austrian yeast with multiple monitoring alarms. Distillation happens in two German-built Schmidt stills with two runs: the stripping run quickly removes alcohol and water, while the spirit run precisely separates heads, hearts, and tails to capture the purest spirit. The chemistry is complex. The fermented mash contains water, alcohols, ethers, esters, acids, sugars, tannins, and sulfur compounds. The critical second distillation has three temperature phases. The "heads" contain toxic methanol that must be removed, but this temperature range also includes desirable esters and aldehydes contributing fruity and floral aromas. Masters taste the product constantly--every hour, then every 30 minutes, then every 5 minutes, finally every 30 seconds--to capture the "heart" that's methanol-free but retains aromatic compounds. The second cut separates "heart" from "tail," which contains heavier problematic compounds like higher alcohols, fatty acids, and sulfur compounds with rubbery or rotten-egg odors. Cutting too early loses flavor compounds that provide sweetness and fruity notes. Aging Innovation After distillation, the liquor ages 7-18 months depending on batch conditions. Here's where they innovate: traditional bourbon aging can lose 20% to "angel's share," unacceptable for high-end Edelbrand. Instead of barrels, they age in stainless steel tanks with lightly toasted American white oak spiral strips soaked in the liquor. The oak amount is carefully controlled to avoid overpowering the delicate fruit aromas. The Tasting Experience I sampled six varieties: clear apple, pear, and cherry, plus their oaked versions. The apple's aroma was so pronounced I could smell it three feet away when KC opened the half-empty bottle. The clear pear showed layered complexity, while the cherry didn't initially smell like cherry but revealed its flavor after a moment in the mouth. Among the oaked versions, the apple oak opens with oak and finishes with apple; the pear oak reverses this--pear first, then oak. The cherry oak achieves beautiful balance with both flavors present throughout. Worth the Investment I spent nearly $85 that afternoon--significant for a graduate student--but felt completely satisfied. The $22 tasting, $44 clear apple bottle, taxes, and $10 tip were well worth it. KC generously spent two hours with me, a single customer, sharing his knowledge and passion. This distillery represents something special: authentic European tradition transplanted to Texas soil, where Austrian mountain craft meets American innovation. If I return, I'm definitely bringing friends for the full tasting experience.

The drinks are spectacular. If you are into good Brandy, check this place out. It's cheap and you will learn a lot. Alexandra's ability as a master distiller is beyond amazing and you'll learn that.
