Nestled on Augusta with what one could describe as little Mexico in Kensington Market. It's the first spot to the right upon walking into this space. SIgnage stating authentic Mayan food. What actually made me stop at this kiosk as opposed to the other ones was watching him put together a Chilaquiles. I had been craving it since my friend said it was one of her favourite dishes. I couldn't find it available at any mexican restaurant I happened to walk by then suddenly there it was!!! It is Mexican dish of fried corn tortilla pieces simmered with salsa or mole and in this version topped with chicken, avocado, feta cheese, onions and green tomato sauce. (You can also opt for the red sauce which is spicy). OMG! Delicious! I inhaled this. Word of advice, be patient. Food is prepared one at a time. Yes, worth waiting for. There is seating at the back if you don't want the take out option. Although they accept debit, cash is much easier and honestly so much faster.

Left (up to down): Enchiladas, cochinita pibil sandwich, poc choc tacos Right (up to down): salbutes, panucha, tamales, chilaquiles

I'm ashamed to say that before I had food from Ko'ox Hana, I was not a huge fan of Mexican food. After having food from here, I've decided that it's not that I dislike Mexican food, I've just never had authentic Mexican food done right! I ordered a little bit of everything from the menu, as they are all very reasonably priced. The portion sizes were also humongous and everything was so good! The people that run the pace are also incredibly friendly and wrote down the names of the dishes on every take out box so that i knew what I was eating. Bottom line is, Ko'ox Hana has changed my view of Mexican food forever; the food here is delicious and will not break the bank!

Another work-in-progress vendor at the front of Gordo's, Ko'ox Haná is a Mayan takeaway kiosk with dishes by Lucy Novelo. I tried their signature dish and it is pulled pork with a tomato sauce with some onions sprinkled on top, along with a black refried bean side to spread on the taco shells they provide. If anyone is a fan of Mexican food, go to Ko'ox Haná and try their hot sauce! Very nice with a sweet afterburner effect. Check it out for something a little different. I'll try something else next time but their signature dish is decent and enough to share between two people for $12.

Quick and friendly service. It was very busy as I was going to order but the server remembered everyone's orders no matter how complicated with such a big crowd. The burrito was juicy and spicy and reasonably priced. Highly recommend!!!

I don't have enough words at this point to describe this joint. If you're looking for a decent sit down with presentation on point this isn't for you. If you're ok with making a conversation and connecting with who's cooking your food, understanding how the ingredients play together, get served in a paper plate, find a table against a wall and inhale it all cause it's sooooo delicious - then this is your meal! One of the many great stalls in this medical food market, definitely will be one of my regular stops as I visit for groceries often!

This food is INCREDIBLE!!!! It strikes the perfect balance between spicy n' sweet - plus Juan (the owner) is a hoot-and-a-half (he's honestly sooo kind and amazing!). I tried five of their dishes right off the bat (hehe - I went overboard, but I couldn't hep myself).. Here's what I found... 1. Chicken Panuchos: the achiote pepper is right from Mexico (he doesn't use the boxed stuff) - which adds a beautiful kick of spice! BUT the red pepper and tomato in the sauce mellows it all out and strikes the perfect slightly-sweet and subtly-spicy flavour. Topped with nothin other than a generous portion of feta cheese, avocado, fresh tomato and onions - it's 10/10 PERFECT! Oh... and did i mention... the tortilla is stuffed with refried beans!?!? Genius. 2. Pork Salbutes. The pork is marinated in a mix of sour orange, achiote and a blend of spices - then it's stewed on a banana leaf to impart yet another level of flavour. Compared to the chicken, this one was a touch spicier - but certainly not overwhelming. 3. Pac Chuc: the BEST pork - marinated in sour orange and garlic! I could have this on anything - literally anything. It was sooo juicy and tender and the sweet n' sour tang was oh-so-addicting 4. Tamales: Not a huge fan of tamales in general, and these were no different. Quite a mild taste - very well cooked and what a tamales is suppose to taste like - i'm just not a huge fan of the single-texture, mild flavour dish. 5. Chilaquiles: topped with a Mayan specialty: Cochinita Pibil (pork marinated with sour orange, achiote, and a blend of spices - just like the one served on the Salbutes earlier). I already knew the pork was delish, but the real star of the show on this plate was his green tomato serano pepper salsa.... I'm not a fan of spice but this one had a subtle sweetness t it that cut through the spice. The salt and acidity brightened up the salsa for the perfect bite. FULL story is here: https://kenzieosborne.com/kensington-market-eats-koox-hana-my-oh-mayan-this-is-delish/ The story behind the restaurant and the owner himself is truly inspiring - and the food speaks for itself and Juan's passion for food and Mayan culture. Definitely a must-eat in the Toronto food scene!

The place is a bit small so it can be a bit tight so I would highly recommend having reservations if you have a large group. Tacos: The soft and the crispy tacos were both delicious. The tinga chicken and the beef barbacoa were juicy and full of flavour. The portions was fair, the quality was a standout and tasted quite authentic. Overall, I really had a great experience at Playa Cabana, totally would come here again to try out their other dishes.

Parking was a challenge, but there is a Green P that is about 5-8 minutes away that isn't too bad if the weather is good. The atmosphere is quite intimate and I did find myself bumping into other people / staff when going to and from the washroom, etc. The food was pretty good - the tacos were full of flavour and I got to try a variety by sharing with the group. I think my favourite was the beef barbacoa. The prices are definitely a bit up there for a Mexican restaurant, I believe the tacos were around $7 each. The quality made it worth it, but there's definitely other places in Toronto that serve up a great taco for nearly half the price. We also tried a couple of appetizers, including the nachos, guac and ceviche. The nachos were something special - it was a bit of a nacho pizza. I didn't expect that from Playa Cabana, given everything else was very authentic. The taste was good, but it was a bit of a challenge to share! The highlight of the night was definitely the desserts - we ordered the tres leches cake, and the churros. Definitely the best churro I've ever had.

We got lucky and they were able to squeeze us into seats at the bar area, which ended up being the best possible spot because we had a front-row view of the live fire cooking the entire night. The ambiance was lively and hip, with a great energy that made the whole experience feel exciting. This was my first time watching each main courses get cooked over live fire in real time, which added to our amazement given that all the dishes came out cooked to the right doneness. Every bite of meat and seafood was perfectly kissed with flame -- the char, the subtle smoke, the texture. Beyond the fire element, you can really taste how fresh everything is. Nothing felt heavy or muddled. Each dish was well thought out with balanced flavors, but the ingredients and that fire/smoke magic were always the main event. Service was also superb. All the staff were attentive and high-energy. Different servers checked up on us throughout the meal, our water was always kept full, and dishes were cleared in a timely manner. Only drawback: the heat. Sitting by the fire is incredible for the show, but it definitely started to feel like a sauna at times. Still, I'd do it again and choose to sit at the bar without hesitation. If you're in Toronto and you love a tasting menu, this is a must. Just make sure you book at least a month in advance - it's popular for a reason.

Every dish was amazingly flavoured and presentation was on point. Atmosphere was lovely too, laid back but chic. Comfortable yet elevated. Highlight was the scallops, we asked for it to be included on our set menu, and they delivered. Can't wait to go back!

The inside was nice, it was dark with ambient lighting and decorated with a modern and Mexican theme. The waitress was super nice, and the staff were fairly attentive. We got the chips and guac to start. I do wish they gave a little bit more walk because it came in this really small cup so we had to go light on the guac to chip ratio. But overall the guac was yummy and the chips were very crunchy with a nice seasoning. They have a special every day of the week and Thursdays are there crunch tacos, which are hard shell tacos, wrapped in a soft shell taco with some sauce in between, and you can choose between their chorizo or chicken. We got one of each. I liked the chicken more but my partner liked the Chorizo. And all the toppings the perfect Fixin's. You enter the restaurant from a set of stairs outside and the restaurant doesn't look too appealing from outside. Also, the restaurant always seems busy and/or small, so it's always loud and service is slow. With the negatives out of the way, let me explain why I love La Carnita! The food is amazing! Their tacos are on point, and with so many to choose from I can go back multiple times can never get bored. Each of their tacos has something different to offer and each has relatively good balance to them. The balance of freshness and savory (and sometimes sweet) toppings is well done, making me come back for more. The one item that pushes La Carnita over the top is their nachos! Homemade nacho chips with gooey cheese and a generous amount of toppings makes them my favorite nachos in Toronto! One last observation is that the service is always friendly. They may be (very) slow at times but they seem like they always try their best and are always quite pleasant. Overall, I love La Carnita and when I get a craving for tacos and nachos, I'm heading straight here!

Because the packaging indicated it was the vegetarian item I ordered, I ate the food, only to realize too late that I had been given beef. This error is not just a minor order mix-up; it is a serious violation of my religious dietary restrictions that has caused me significant personal distress. As a food establishment, accurate labelling and order verification are critical responsibilities, especially when customers trust your menu to align with their religious and dietary needs.I request that management investigates how this cross-contamination or mislabelling occurred to ensure it does not happen to anyone else. I expect a prompt response regarding how you plan to handle this error and prevent it from recurring.
