Had no trouble until the recent rains gave us a roof leak. The roofer we had look at it indicated it was under the supports for the PV. Since KOTA is out of business, the mfr Enphase referred us to Homelink, but they do not support the installation warranty. 1 star is the lowest I could give this company but it's an ongoing nightmare. We hesitated on writing a review but like many I like to read reviews from others before I commit to a business. I don't understand how other people had such an amazing experience and we didn't. I'm starting to believe those are not real customers. KOTA HAD US GO THROUGH A NIGHTMARE and still are. Their team is unresponsive, they never followed up with us. We were never guided through the app that we have yet to download so we can check on our solar status. It's been almost 3 years!! Our original plan included a main panel upgrade, due to the fact that our panel was not working. This was needed to be able to get solar put on our house. When looking at the design they had everything tucked on the side of our house where the original panel was. However, when they came to do the actual install they put both boxes, the solar converter and the new main panel, directly on the front of our house. This was never agreed to, so we instantly stopped the work. It then took over a year to get them to work with pg&e to get it moved to the original location. They then left damage on the front of the house and it took us reaching back out to get them to fix it. As soon as they fixed it, we never heard from them again. I have reached out and nobody cares to respond. We had some guy by the name of "Parker" asking us for a rating..ridiculous! Asked us for a rating before confirming if we were even satisfied! I do plan on warning our neighbors through "Nextdoor" about them to notify them to look out for "KOTA SOLAR" and that they are dishonest, unreliable and to not trust them to commit to their job because they can care less about their customer service. We are CURRENTLY struggling, we are being ignored and it's be some stressful because we are still being charged through PG&E. Pictures I provided were of them reaching out and taking days to respond and have YET TO RESPOND. WAITING ON AN ANSWER. PER USUAL, we are being pushed aside. This was the worst solar experience imaginable. These people destroyed a wall and halted our renovation, we told them so many times, they didn't care, I had to hire someone after waiting 2 weeks for them just so we could continue. They damaged the electrical to the house, they tracked dog poop all over my house, they damaged exterior walls and never fixed them, they left us without power for a full day and no heat int he dead of winter, they left a generator in our yard for a month despite pleas to come get it, they installed 4 months late, They lied repeatedly about nearly every aspect of the install, they left giant holes in my walls for 6 months now. They are unethical. They do terrible work. The customer service is catastrophic. They left our house damaged, we have paid over $10,000 in repairs. We demanded they pay for this and only covered $5,000 which took them 6 months to pay. We confronted our manager Nate and his boss John Hard. They lied to our faces about nearly everything. I can get into detail if you want to know. They are also silenced anyone below them who tried to help us. I regret choosing Kota more than I can articulate. I have heard other tales of horror. Roofs being destroyed, rain damage from incompetent installs, damage inside the home. They do not care once they have our money. Some of the worst people to work with, pls avoid at all costs. SO difficult to reach them for support. They have been unreachable by the email address shown on their 'Contact Us' web page: info@kotasolar.com . I've tried several times and no one responds. When I call the system puts me in the queue or I can leave a message. None of my messages have been returned. Yesterday I was on hold for 40 minutes--where the system said I was next in line--and then it said, after 40 minutes, that I had to leave a message--it wouldn't let me stay on hold). Same frustration phone experience today. I even tried messaging a couple of the executives via LinkedIn... no replies. Our panels have stopped working. Google reviews show other unhappy customers. My experience with KOTA was easy. Matan Bostick was engaging and informative from the very first minute. He took the time to understand what my needs were and what I was hoping for with the program. I wasn't sure about the number of panels because I was looking to lease an EV. Matan was patience as I went back and forth, and helped me come to a conclusion without trying to upsell with the higher panel count. Matan's focus was solely on me. His only goal was to make sure I had all the answers I needed without any pressure. I knew this would follow suite with KOTA, and it has. I have a handful of neighbors who already used KOTA for their solar needs, and I'm glad I did, too. I felt very comfortable, supported, and confident that my experience with Matan would lead to an equally satisfy experience with pre-inspections, permits and the actual installation this past week. I am actively trying to recoup losses from KOTA. The crew that put in my solar panels, caused 17,000+ dollars in damage to my property and counting. They broke many roof tiles, and there are large gaps in most all of the stanchions for the panels frame. One was literally 45 degrees in the air. This means that every rain since the install, damaged my underlayment, plywood, insulation, living room ceiling and walls drywall, and paint (yes I had to put out buckets). I have had two solar certified roofing companies inspect their work, and both have given bids that 15,000 dollars of work needs to be performed to completely reinstall the panels, and replace the underlayment because they were not installed correctly / professionally. This cost is likely to rise once the tiles come off and the plywood and insulation are inspected. I have estimates that the interior damage is 2,000 dollars currently. I have contacted the company for 2 months well over a dozen times, spending countless time on hold, and nothing. I was told by their project managers they fired every install crew they had except one for incompetence, and then the entire Bay Area office was fired. I reached out directly to their CEO and Director who promised to fix my roof "with all urgency" but nothing happened except more damage every time it rains for weeks. Moreover, these are just the current issues. My system failed inspection multiple times. The crew failed to show up multiple times during the install. I called them and told them the were planning to install incompatible microinvertors in the plans, and they completely ignored me, delaying the installation for months when they showed up with the ones (I told them) wouldn't work. The company failed to install the panels where we agreed. Their crew installed the cut-off switch in the middle of my wood storage and lied they could not move it. My entire system stopped working last year, and after four months, I had 3,000+ in charges to pay for before they replaced every microinvertor (after trying to claim it was an "act of god" not their absolutely amateur installation). The only good thing about this company is the salesman. KOTA is a dumpster fire, point blank, full stop. If you had an installation done by them in the Bay Area, PLEASE have it inspected (a roofer / solar company will likely do this for free). Your roof is likely being damaged every time it rains. The longer you wait, the more damage there will be. There is no question this is KOTAs fault. I had zero leaks, and my entire roof inspected, and all aging materials replaced a year prior to KOTAs installation. It has now been 5 months since I posted a review on 9/22/23. There is still no resolution. After my previous post and multiple phone calls, Kota finally sent out a technician to review. The technician arrived and immediately said that the system was installed incorrectly. They did not take into account the fact that we have two units and did not set up for energy transfer between units. The technician said that they would need to literally start over. He also said he was leaving the company because these mistakes keep happening and he sick of dealing with it. Of course, Kota has not suggested updating or changing anything in the system. They recommended an adjustment through PGE. Despite this, we are still not exporting any energy and our electricity bill continues to rise. The adjustment did not work. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. We are now looking into legal recourse as nothing has changed. read more

Our experience with the solar panels has been excellent, with nearly a year since installation, everything is functioning exactly as expected. We had a great experience with Rae from Kota. He was recommended by a friend and did what we wanted: gave us clear information, answered our questions clearly, honestly, and without pressure, and let us move the project forward at our own pace. In the end we wound up financing the entire thing including a new roof (through the company the Rae recommended). The entire process took a bit of time given that we first had to get the roofing done and then schedule the installation, but Kota was pretty quick to do their part of things. The slowest part was waiting for the city inspections and for PG&E. Kota wasn't the cheapest quote we got, but it seemed like they had a good process and I felt best about moving forward with Rae compared to the several other salespeople with whom I spoke. I will admit that people from Kota still knock on my door now and ask me why I don't have solar, but I imagine that they'll update that system and stop fairly soon? 5 stars for Rae in particular; Kota in general was fine but I can't really compare the install or other parts of the process with other companies. In the end our system is cranking out the predicted amount of electrical and we have negative usage so feeling pretty good about that, and will feel even better when the tax credit kicks in! read more

While I wanted solar for obvious environmental reasons, I was concerned that it might not actually save money to go with solar. The rep at Kota was very helpful. We looked at the last 2 years of my PG&E bills and determined my monthly average. We then figured out how many solar panels I would need for my house. I said we needed to extra panels to accommodate the charging for the Tesla we recently purchased. Once we figured out how many panels we needed, the rep showed me how much it would cost to buy it outright, and also gave me the option of a 15-year and a 30-year loan. My understanding is that the panels will last a good 25 years. The monthly payment on the 15-yr loan was cheaper than my current monthly PG&E bill. So once 15 years goes by, I'll get "free energy" for years to come! Plus, I got a good tax-deduction on my 1040 for going solar. So if you take the total cost of the loan (or outright payment of the solar panels) minus the tax credit, and compare it to 25 years of PG&E, you'll see it's a no brainer. Oh, and don't forget: the loan payments are fixed, but PG&E rates go up every year, so if you factor in how much electricity will cost in the future, going solar makes even more sense. It's a NO BRAINER, folks. Also, I highly recommend you ask for Skylar Sheriar. His number is 925-330-3328. He made sure every step of the way went well. He even stopped by on the installation day to make sure everything went smoothly. What a great guy. I also got texts from the Kota team letting know when things were going to happen. The communication and professionalism was really good. Honestly, I'm not sure how the experience could have been improved. Also, Skylar was not salesy or weird. He was no pressure and just factual about costs, the loans, installation process etc. Also, if you look into it, they are using some of the best solar panels out there. read more

Absolutely terrible solar company. Do yourself a favor and don't trust this company. Paid over $20k for solar panels, only to find out their poor installation caused roof damage and a roof leak. Attempted to allow Kota to fix the issue and follow through with their written contract and warranty but they now have stonewalled us. We're having to seek legal counsel. This company should be ashamed of itself. One of the managers that came to do the final inspection of the issue before they ghosted us took full responsibility, even saying he was concerned about mold because the leak is right above our son's room. read more

The equipment was installed in early 2021 but did not pass final inspection with the City due to lack of roof attachments, Kota kept assuring us it would get approved but in 2023 dropped us like a rock. We then tracked down 2021 engineer plans to cure the attachment problem but which were never submitted to the City by Kota or anyone else they were monitoring to finish the project., After delay after delay and frustrations for over three years we tracked down these plans which led to the City issuing a final permit. We barely squeaked under the NEM2 deadline. Here's an admission by Kota: "It seems like we have not met the expectations that we promised from the onset of this project and I will see to personally that we get this resolved." We've had our solar panels installed for about 8 months now and are very happy that we went with Koda, our rep, Jake, was wonderful to work with, easy to reach, answered ALL our questions and made the whole process so smooth and even enjoyable and exciting. He pretty much held our hands through the whole process and even after installation has continued to be reachable. We love the app feature to check our daily production! The original install was good a few years back. BUT I needed a new roof so had to remove the panels. Took forever with multiple calls and complaints to get the panels removed. Finally got roof installed and now I have been trying for 3 weeks to get a project Manager to call and schedule. I understand they are likely busy I just want to get on the calendar. FYI I have already paid for the reinstall as they would not remove them without full payment. Is an attorney next? Update: KOTA responded and sent a crew out today to reinstall the solar system. I had a great experience using KOTA for a solar purchase and install in 2019 in Oakland. We're now four years out and are still happy with our installation, production quality, and solar loan servicing. We are consistently in the green with our True Up bill and our solar loan monthly cost is lower than our old PG&E bill. We heard about KOTA through a door-to-door sales rep, Pablo Avila (510-414-6588) who was really great to work with, from initial consult to followups after installation. After hearing his pitch and talking through details, we ended up shopping around to compare offers and ended up coming back to KOTA specifically because of the care and professionalism of Pablo throughout the process. Solar City, for example, was a little bit cheaper for a comparable system, but their sales rep was hassle to deal with, so we ended up going back to Pablo. Funnily enough, my parents ended up getting sold on a solar system by Pablo a few months later, without any of us knowing the connection until we both had installed our systems. My parents agreed that it was Pablo's work that sold them as well. If you're in the East Bay, I strongly suggest reaching out directly. read more

We have had a very bad overall experience with this company. We installed our solar with them a year ago (Sept '22) and have had problems ever since. The sales team, customer service, and technicians are all really nice, but the following issues prevent me from giving them a positive review. 1. After installing the panels in September, 50% of them were not wired correctly. It took another month to get KOTA to install them correctly. They kept directing us to Solar Edge (who makes the inverters) and Solar Edge kept sending us back to KOTA. In the end KOTA got all panels working, but it took a month and many visits and calls. 2. The panels produced 20% less than their estimated production for the first year. The sales team boasted "scary accurate models" that would meet our needs for an annual 9,000 kwh, and we produced closer to 7,000 this year. 3. It took many months to get us hooked up to use the Solar Edge app to track production. KOTA installed a cellular kit so the data can be uploaded to the app and tracked. This kit has never worked for us. Today (10/11/2023) we still show last updated as 9/22/2023 in the app. The customer service team has said that a ethernet connection is required, but that is not something KOTA provides. They told me to call a AV company. I was able to put an ethernet cable on the outside of the house myself and we have been waiting for them for over a week to hook it up. TBD if this even fixes the problem. It's not important to us to check production daily, but it regularly fails to update for weeks and then a tech has to come manually update the app. I hate to write these types of reviews as everyone has been nothing but friendly along the way, but I think these are important considerations as you consider which solar company to use for your installation. read more

We are on MONTH 6 of no functional solar and nearly the whole reason besides a month install delay from covid, is due to extraordinarily poor project management and accountability. I advise you to look elsewhere unless you have the time and energy to oversee all the steps and make sure that things are getting done. We had a good experience with Kota. They were recommended to us by a few different friends and neighbors. Isaac was our sales rep and he was attentive and communicative throughout. The whole process was pretty fast - I think we started the process October 2022 and panels were up and running (after install, city inspection, etc) by January 2023. Kota positioned the panels to maximize production given a big redwood tree that shades part of our roof. We also talked about the number of panels that would accommodate future electrical needs (e.g., EV charging port, A/C install). We have had a few issues since then, including the panels not connecting to the Enphase app that tracks solar production, and a small roof leak from the panel installation. The Kota team was generally responsive with these issues and sent someone out to fix/repair quite quickly. All issues have resolved and we are happy with the panels and our much lower PGE bills. read more

Like many of you, we had someone to come our door. We had always wanted to do solar and Nate was very helpful answering questions and communicating. Since signing out contract, it has been a nightmare. I hate to talk negatively about a business but unfortunately our issues have not been solved so maybe this will help. We started this solar journey a few weeks after finding out we were expecting our first child...this child is now due tomorrow and still no working solar. Here is a little timeline: July 8th - contract signed September 8th- Solar Panels Installed on Roof (but not hooked up to PGE). During October and November- Kota Solar Co keeps telling us that PGE is back logged on "main panel upgrade" work and they are still trying to schedule a time for them to come to our house to make the solar electrical live November 4th- Kota confirms that even though our system is not up and running and loan payments are about to start for the solar panels they will reimburse us for any payments made while the system is not live - November 10th- Loan payments for the Solar start (the purchase of the panels and system) December 8th- After no communication, I call the help line with Kota and had someone actually look into the problem. Kota Solar Co says that the electrical panel now needs to be moved (was never discussed in any initial drawings or plans). I reach out to Nate and am told they are working on it. January 20th- We were given the phone number for the project manager at Kota associated with our home installation from the sales rep. We called the project manager Jeff Ryan and spoke to him and the Operation lead Maxwell Marzolf to discuss what was holding us back from install. We were informed that PGE required us to run conduit differently and our weather head needed to be adjusted as well which required their head electrician to sign off on some updated plans before they attempted the fix. We were told that the electrician was very busy and we wouldn't know for certain that the plans Maxwell presented to us would get approved. January 21st- Following that call we requested via email drawings and permits provided by PGE that would show what work they were planning to do and what was already permitted. We also asked to be reimbursed for all payments made to date because we had not received any funds that were promised while the system was still not live. January 25th- Maxwell responded to our email with essentially an iPhone edited photo where he drew a red line indicating a new run of conduit and the weather head adjustment that they planned to make as well as PGE contact information and permit and offered a date for the next available install time. Maxwell is unable to comment on the process for how we would be reimbursed and asks Jeff Ryan to confirm that process. January 29th- Again we ask how/when we can expect reimbursement now out close to $500 with no benefit. February 3rd- No response to email asking for update on reimbursement so we sent another note February 7th- Maxwell responds asking for Jeff Ryan to confirm. Maxwell also confirms the install for Feb 8th. We follow up again since there has been no response from Jeff Ryan on when payment will come. February 8th- Maxwell responds that he has spoken to Jeff Ryan and that he will call us today. He does not. We call him. Leave a voicemail. February 8th- Phase 1 of the relocation work was performed. Not discussed was removing a down spout gutter which left a hole in our roof line gutter to just pour water straight down around our air conditioner and other electrical components and running an exposed grounding wire down from the panel about 5' up from ground level to the concrete bed below our side yard gravel. The grounding wire was burried about a finger nail below the top layer of gravel. The installers said through out the day "there is no way this install gets approved by PGE". They say PGE might show but probably won't so they will schedule another time to do the final step of the work at a time that PGE can come out. We also call and email Jeff and Maxwell...still no response. I know this is a lot but this is showing how 7 months after signing a contract, we have NO IDEA WHEN WE WILL HAVE SOLAR HOOKED UP AND THEY WON'T CALL US BACK. read more

I waited an entire year to write this review on KOTA. In short, I would NEVER recommend this company to someone looking for solar. I would actually advise against it. I got my solar panels installed and ready to go in June of 2022. To start off, the sales rep, Tyler, that came to my door was great. He was nice and friendly and explained every step of the way to me. That's where they got me and why I decided to proceed and get solar with KOTA. Fast forward to appx, August, i'm seeing that the panels are not producing hardly any energy based on the estimated True Up bill I was receiving from PGE . I reached out to Tyler, he said they were working properly and that they fluctuate throughout the year. Eventually by the end of the year, the amount of energy produced evens out and i'll be fine. I dont know ANYTHING about solar or energy or the measurements of energy or whats high or low or how to even read my energy bill if i'm being honest. I took his word for it. I received the following month's True Up bill and and it had doubled. I almost had a heart attack. The estimated true up bill was as if I didnt have ANY solar. I might as well just keep paying PGE myself. I reached out to Tyler yet again. After sending him screenshots of my app and showing him how much energy I was producing, he confirmed they were not working properly and it took a while but eventually he send someone to fix it. great. now theyre up and running like they should. WELLLLLL..... I advised Tyler when I agreed to purchase solar panels, that I would be getting an EV and will be charging it at home. I wanted to make sure they added enough panels to account for that extra energy I will be needing. Tyler assured me they included it in our purchase and that the amount of panels would be enough for the amount of energy we currently use (based on 12 months worth of PGE statements) as well as the EV charging we anticipated doing. One year later, I get my official PGE True Up bill and I owe $4K!!!! What . The..... I am so upset that I decided to go with this company. I reached out numerous times, spoke with different reps. I demanded to speak with a manager, I never got a call back. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE YOU RECEIVE FROM THIS BUSINESS AFTER YOU'VE ALREADY BECOME A CUSTOMER IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Solar install: Almost perfect if not for the redo of inspections KOTA was already a buzzing name in our locality with their outreach and many installs. Luckily my trusted real estate agent had just used KOTA to install his solar, this along with working with a wonderful person called Issac made me sign up for solar install with KOTA. The initial process was such a smooth ride. Issac was patient and did not push for a sale the first 3-6 months I was still trying to see the best fit for our house. Once we signed up, the installs and initial approvals were done within 2-3 weeks and then we had to wait for over a month for the inspection. This is when the process slowed down a bit from small things like dangling wires, a small clamp missing.. all I can say I was impressed with the thoroughness of the official. We did the inspection 2-3 times and always it was a small thing, luckily KOTA was up to the task and provided all the information/pictures etc. Once the final inspection was done we got the final approval in 2-3 days instead of the weeks of waiting as throughout the process KOTA kept uploading the completed work documents and that moved the process along. We finally got connected a few days back and very thankful and appreciative of the folks at KOTA. From their install team to the engineers and reps all have been throughly professional. Thank you! I came into the whole solar process pretty skeptically because I had some incorrect assumptions about how net metering worked and the potential benefits to my house. We hadn't planned to get solar, but our neighbors were doing so, and Pablo walked us through what had changed since we last considered it ~5 years ago (financing, IRA incentives, panel technology, relationship with PG&E.) We installed November 2022, and since then, our loan cost is lower than the previous PG&E bills.
