I finally got around to trying this place. I like some Japanese dishes like hibachi and street food at Don Express, but I have also had some experiences that were not good at other Japanese restaurants, especially with hibachi, which at most spots is rather pricey. An Hibachi Combo can run from around $17 to just short of $23. Most local locations include either a salad or soup, and some include both. There is 1 that includes neither, and the combo cost is $16 or more at that spot. Here I got the Hibachi Chicken, and there was a nice amount of food. Everything was good, but not great. I doubt I'll return since I consider Rio and Kimono as better options. read more

This is one of the two Japanese places near my home, and it did not disappoint. I had a decent meal; I got the shrimp and steak combination. It came with fried rice and sweet carrots. The portion size was fine. However, the other Japanese joint down the road gives me a bit bigger portion sizes, and I can usually squeeze two meals from one dinner combination. The inside is actually quite nice, with some seating and dated décor. I got my meal to go, and it was piping hot when I got there, and wrapped up nicely in a plastic bag. I was provided soy and duck sauce, even though I did not ask for it, as well as some napkins and a plastic fork. The gentleman behind the counter was pleasant and ensured that I got the correct order by going over my name, number, and order. I tried one of the house specials when I got my takeout; I got cheese steak spring rolls. I thought they were decent, I think they could have been filled a bit more, but the flavor was good, there was just not much in the roll itself, I can say this as one was pictured, but I got two, as I wanted to give it a real good try and see what they were all about. First time I've visited Kotta Japanese. It's in a convenient spot in the Lowes Foods shopping center on Reynolda. First impressions, the inside is a bit cluttered and feels like the usual strip mall Chinese restaurant. Our table wasn't clean. I ordered the Teriyaki Jumble Shimp Kabobs because there was a picture and it looked really good. The plate had a rice base, which was decent. Vegetables :typical, sweet and soft carrots, sautéed zucchini, onion. It came with an orange sauce: creamy and slightly sweet. Pretty normal hibachi style place. The shrimp kabobs were really good. Nine shrimp spread over three skewers. They were crispy on the outside and the teriyaki flavor was pretty nice. Meh. It wasn't *bad* per se, but I just wasn't impressed. I got the steak (not filet) and shrimp with half rice and half noodles. It was over $20 with a 20% tip. It was packaged nicely and a decent portion but everything was lacking flavor. The steak had no seasoning and the shrimp were kind of small and just not great quality. I didn't love the rice or noodles - again, lacking flavor. I also was not a big fan of the shrimp sauce. It was kind of runny and overly sweet. I placed an online order & it was easy and ready in 15-20 minutes. Staff were fine but not overly friendly. For the price point, I unfortunately wouldn't come here again. I came here for the first time this past weekend. Since coming to town 8 years ago, I've been looking for a good, quick, Japanese place and might have found it here. Kotta is nothing fancy, but the food was quick and good. I ordered the hibachi steak. It was cooked perfect. I had a large amount of rice and broccoli and the shrimp sauce was very good. I downgraded a bit because I didn't have much steak in my order (I'd guess less than 3oz). But I'm willing to come back and try again sometime soon. read more

My boyfriend took me here for lunch, neither of us having been here before. I thought the food was delicious! The serving sizes were decent, and I felt full and didn't eat much of the rice. The only reason I am giving four stars instead of five is because I asked for noodles instead of rice, which was one of the options for no extra charge. Visited Kotta with some coworkers in December. It was prime lunch time but we were the only guests. I ordered teriyaki chicken and vegetables. Christmas music was blasting into the restaurant at a volume that made conversation difficult. While a picture of a woman in a bikini and a Santa hat was on the TV screen. Just an odd environment all around. I found the food to be pretty boring and underseasoned. Everything was just kinda blah. There was lots of liquid at the bottom of my plate too which was weird. I only get takeout here- but it's always good! I get the teriyaki chicken with white rice and mixed veggies. Kids get steak- it's always more than enough to fill you up. Went there for lunch with my daughter and 3 grandchildren, the tables were dirty, had to clean one ourselves, no trash bags in the trash can, all the drinks were flat , the shrimp sauce was like pouring water, and my granddaughter's order was wrong, Kotta used to be our favorite for lunch, but the last 3-4 times it's been crazy, not to mention the prices have raised considerably for less food! The new location on Reynolda is open! I chatted with the owner and he seems very friendly. We ordered some take out - there was a special chicken, beef, and shrimp combo, and it was good. The fried rice was a tad salty for me, but hubs didn't mind it. Your order will come with mixed veg, broccoli or mushrooms. Orders will come with the large sauce container of the white stuff, but if you're disgusted with mayo-based sauces like hubs is, make sure to let them know to replace with the mustard sauce (very much wasabi based) or the ginger sauce instead. I was really disappointed in this place. I may have come on a wrong night? I don't know. We got two orders one with chicken, shrimp, fried rice, broccoli, and carrots. The other was filet, shrimp, fried rice, broccoli, and carrots. Now the meat was delicious, but there was barely any meat at all. Their sauce also was very good, and I typically don't like sauces. Now the carrots were awful, it was like they accidentally dumped a pound of sugar on 5 slices of carrots, I could only eat two. Also, the rice was the same situation but instead of sugar they must have dumped pounds of garlic onto the rice. I never waste food, but I just could not eat this. I also love garlic, but that was disgusting, I couldn't even taste the rice, it was just pure garlic. Neither of us were satisfied or could finish our meal. We definitely will NOT be returning. $30 for 6 pieces of small meat, no thanks. read more

This is some seriously good Japanese. It's a small, mainly take out kind of place, but the same quality food as you would get at the big sit down show that's cooked in front of you. We dined in and for the small number of booths they had for seating they were extra long booths (really good for families). We also had the combo special for two which was plenty of food for the both of us and was very reasonably priced. My boyfriend and I have grabbed takeout from here three times. The food is so good. The food doesn't seem overly sauced or greasy at all. We've tried the chicken, steak, and pork, and they've all been really tasty. We weren't crazy about the dumplings, but we both prefer steamed dumplings, so can't say whether they weren't good or just not our preference.
