Always great service. Always great food! This place is never packed so service is always quick feels like a hidden gem!

    Interior is kind plain.

The exterior and interior of this place belies the quality of the food. It's a re-purposed chain or steakhouse from the 80'snor 90's. They have added some Asian pictures and painted all the woodwork red, but it's still a Shoney's or Bob's Steakhouse look. You order at the counter, and they bring your food out to you. Be warned, if you're like me and think Bojangles is spicy enough - the hotness scale is a trap. I got a #2 level Pad Thai and could just barely eat it, it was so hot. There are a lot of shrimp, and the food was out in just a few minutes (I was the only customer inside on a quiet Wednesday late afternoon.) When I first moved to this area, I found their sushi to be fast, cheap, and of acceptable quality to make the drive out from my house across the river. Now there are a lot of new places that offer it closer to home. But I happened to be here and wanted to get Pad Thai. But wow, is it hot!!

Food was good, service excellent, and the ambiance the inside of restaurant area very nice.

My new favorite place to get Hibachi! Great food and customer service, portions are large and prices are on point. I can't wait to try the sushi next time.

If you're looking for a sushi restaurant with a good buy one get one deal Koumi definitely is the place in Durham for that. I usually get the $8.99 sushi deal with the crunchy crab roll and dynamite roll. The fillings are generous and the rolls are tight. I've also had the hibachi but it's not my first option for this restaurant because they serve so much more. The veggie lo mein also has many types of vegetables in it, the portion size is also amazing for the price.

A-OK takeaway sushi from Koumi tonight. I got two rolls that were nicely assembled and the fish was good. It was unremarkable. Koumi has sushi, chinese, thai and even vietnamese. Jack of all trades, master of none. As I said, the sushi was good. It's not quite "I'm a fan."

"Good Japanese-American 'fast-food' and basic sushi" Let me start by saying what this place is "not"-- this is not a fancy date-night or impress-the-guest restaurant. If you want that setting, or higher-end Japanese cuisine/ sushi, then go to Kurama or someplace like that. This is a place to go with the kids to get a decent dinner at a lower price. Along the side of Roxboro St stands this restaurant that looks much more like a renovated fast food joint than a Japanese restaurant, complete with drive-thru on the backside. The setting is somewhat dark inside-- almost like the lights weren't turned all the way on rather than mood lighting. You walk up to a cash register in the front, order what you want, sit down, and they bring your order in a few minutes. Positives: + Price/ portion-size/ value. I got a hibachi chicken/ sushi combo for roughly $9 before tax and tip. Came with a rather large plate of hibachi chicken and vegetables (carrots, broccoli, onions, zucchini) over fried rice, one sushi roll (I picked the salmon roll), and a fountain drink. It was a quite satisfying quantity of food, and that price was excellent. Two kids split a two-sushi-roll combo (also ~$9), and it was pretty big (see picture). Both were full by the end. + Service. All the staff were clearly trying very hard to make us happy and comfortable-- we were checked on several times (with drink refills) while we awaited our dish, and several people came to ask if it was our first time and if we were happy with the food. Presentation of the food was also surprisingly good. Neutral: +/- Quality. Solid-- better than Japan Express by a lot, and they clearly made the sushi fresh. None of the dishes were quite as amazing as what I'd get someplace higher-end like Kurama, but they were below half the price here compared to Kurama, so again, value was high for good quality. Hibachi and rice were quite tasty. The dragon roll was pretty good, philly and salmon rolls were serviceable (though I'd probably not order them again next time). Negatives: - Setting. Again, dark (not in an "intimate" way), and slightly distracting with TV playing football. Synopsis: Good place if you're craving some good Japanese-American food or basic sushi and don't want to break the bank. Definitely a better option than fast-food or places like Japan Express. Likely a good option for take-out, too. Solid 3-stars (maybe 3.5): A-OK.

Fish sauce wings - very good, definitely recommend

The rolls looked pretty nice when they came out -- colorful with different toppings, sauces drizzled on top, and some green onions. The fish tasted fresh enough and the rice was okay, not too hard or mushy. But honestly, the flavors were just average. Some rolls were a bit too sweet from the sauce, others a little salty from the roe. It was creative, but nothing that really blew me away. The place has a nice warm wooden table vibe and the lighting is good for photos. Service was quick, no long wait. Price-wise, it felt a little expensive for Durham -- four rolls and we weren't super impressed with the value. It was fine for a casual meal, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back just for the sushi. Might try something else next time or their omakase to see if it's better.

Heck, I had my doubts when I pulled in and saw a plywood sign with spray paint directing me to the pickup window. Man, if this isn't a lesson in "don't judge a book by its cover," then I don't know what is! When I pulled into the drive thru, there was one car ahead of me, so I had a second to glance at the menu, although I wish I had more time as it has way more options than I would have expected! I decided to try the teriyaki steak (no onions) and the Diablo roll. The woman who took my order was cheerful and kind, and even offered me a free sweet tea. I'm not usually a sweet tea person, but then again, I previously would have said I wasn't a drive thru sushi girl, either, so I decided to try it. After placing my order, I drove around to the second window to pick it up. There was another couple there ordering for outside seating, so I waited maybe 2-4 minutes. By the time I got to the window, everything was ready! This piqued my suspicions until I saw just how quickly one of the chefs was rolling sushi--he was so fast! In the time it took to pass me my food and my sweet tea through the window, he assembled, rolled, decorated, AND packaged a sushi roll. Seriously impressive! As I pulled away, I stuck my straw in my tea, and wow! It was really good! We are talking Bojangles level of delicious tea. At a drive thru sushi/hibachi place?! I got home and opened up my food and was impressed yet again! My roll came with seaweed salad (my fave!) and edamame in addition to the usual ginger and wasabi. The spicy Mayo was just hot enough without being overpowering and the shrimp tempura wasn't overly-breaded. Win! My hibachi was filled with fresh veggies and was a larger portion than I expected. The steak was good, but not great, but dang, for this speed and price, I'm definitely not complaining! I also got a very sizable container of the white sauce, which was awesome! It's probably 4oz or so? It's the same size as a cup of Queso at Moe's if that reference helps anyone. All in all, I had a great experience and will definitely be back to try more! I've heard wonders about their tofu hibachi, so that's on my list. If you're in the area and craving some good takeout hibachi, definitely give Tokyo Express a try!

Had a date night here (sat at the bar- which you can reserve online), and did the "Kaiseki"…read more(Japanese tasting) menu. It's about 10 courses for $130- and I felt it was well worth the price. The quality of the fish was great, the flavor combinations were unique, and each course was different from each other (I appreciated only one course- with 4 items- was tempura/fried). You can add on additional tempura items at one point in the meal, and you can add on a wine and sake tasting. My favorite courses of the meal were the FIRST "seabass sammie" and the brie tempura (get the add on if it's not included in your menu!!!!) Some of the courses were interactive (I.e. cooking lobster in butter) and made for a cool, fun, and unique experiences. The restaurant is small and cozy (limited seating, so make a reservation far in advance), and both the waiters and the chefs were extremely friendly and engaging (sit at the bar counter). Really enjoyed all of the food, and an opportunity to wear something nice, and to eat something different (than what you're used to in Durham). I appreciated they had 2 other tasting menus, for cheaper prices (one was only $38), and that every tasting menu was VERY different from each other (makes it easy to come back multiple times). Would highly recommend M Tempura, and will definitely be back!

They also do a la carte and takeout. The service here is fairly good as my waiter was checking in on me every 10-15 min or so. My only problem is it's very tiny inside and tables are nestled so close to each other so you're almost within arms reach of another table.
