I saw some reviews that I did not necessarily agree with and wanted to share my opinion. To start off, when you pull up to this restaurant, it is relatively unassuming. Looks like a several times converted restaurant. It's nice and clean, and the staff is very friendly. We got here at lunch time on a Friday and there was a steady stream of people the whole time we were here. We got 4 rolls of sushi. All of them were good (albeit some better than others). 6-8 medium-to-large pieces per roll. Boyfriend finished his, and I did not. In all was exactly was I was looking for! A small business in my area and some pretty good sushi around the corner. I may not recommend anyone drive out to find this restaurant, but I will definitely be returning!

Always great service. Always great food! This place is never packed so service is always quick feels like a hidden gem!

    Interior is kind plain.

The exterior and interior of this place belies the quality of the food. It's a re-purposed chain or steakhouse from the 80'snor 90's. They have added some Asian pictures and painted all the woodwork red, but it's still a Shoney's or Bob's Steakhouse look. You order at the counter, and they bring your food out to you. Be warned, if you're like me and think Bojangles is spicy enough - the hotness scale is a trap. I got a #2 level Pad Thai and could just barely eat it, it was so hot. There are a lot of shrimp, and the food was out in just a few minutes (I was the only customer inside on a quiet Wednesday late afternoon.) When I first moved to this area, I found their sushi to be fast, cheap, and of acceptable quality to make the drive out from my house across the river. Now there are a lot of new places that offer it closer to home. But I happened to be here and wanted to get Pad Thai. But wow, is it hot!!

Food was good, service excellent, and the ambiance the inside of restaurant area very nice.

My new favorite place to get Hibachi! Great food and customer service, portions are large and prices are on point. I can't wait to try the sushi next time.

If you're looking for a sushi restaurant with a good buy one get one deal Koumi definitely is the place in Durham for that. I usually get the $8.99 sushi deal with the crunchy crab roll and dynamite roll. The fillings are generous and the rolls are tight. I've also had the hibachi but it's not my first option for this restaurant because they serve so much more. The veggie lo mein also has many types of vegetables in it, the portion size is also amazing for the price.

    Two rolls from Koumi

A-OK takeaway sushi from Koumi tonight. I got two rolls that were nicely assembled and the fish was good. It was unremarkable. Koumi has sushi, chinese, thai and even vietnamese. Jack of all trades, master of none. As I said, the sushi was good. It's not quite "I'm a fan."

When you arrive the entrance can be a bit hard to find as it's tucked away down a cobblestone road. Look for the "m" logo outside of the door of the restaurant. You'll check in with the host when you arrive, and for this trip we opted to sit at the bar. When you walk into M sushi you'll feel like you've stepped into an underground, relaxed hangout for sushi. To start I ordered the Mizuwari (Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, elderfower liqueur, and tonic) which was perfectly balanced and a great way to start the meal. Following that the omakase service started with miso soup which was hot and fresh, followed by the different pieces of sushi. There was a variety from blue fin tuna, to sea bream, to Norwegian Sea trout. My favorite was a tie between the seared salmon belly and toro blue fin. We also ordered a bottle of Born Gold Junmai Daliginjo (Rich, smooth, fruit and grain forward) which paired excellently with the meal. This was a fun experience as it was my first time trying Omakase and looking forward to my next trip to M Sushi.

We started off with their sodas made in-house, one being green apple and the other being grapefruit. They were okay. The grapefruit one kind of tasted like apple cider vinegar. We tried them because a soda was $6 and there were no free refills. I find that a strange decision but this could be personal preference. We got a mixture of the small plates and rolls including the nigiri (delightful!), tuna crispy rice (my 2nd favorite), dumplings, bao bun (one cut in half), the rainbow roll, and the unagi roll. While I thought the nigiri and tuna crispy rice were amazing - both tasted fresh - overall, the food was just fine. I think our experience could just be based on pure preference. I found the sushi to be good but not the best I have ever had as some other Yelpers have experienced.

The fish overall ranges from OK to not the greatest but for dinner you're only paying $26 or so before taxes and tip. They also do a la carte and takeout. The service here is fairly good as my waiter was checking in on me every 10-15 min or so. My only problem is it's very tiny inside and tables are nestled so close to each other so you're almost within arms reach of another table. Gets very busy so there will definitely be a wait depending upon the time you go so plan for that but you can walk around the Whole Foods around the corner or around Duke East Campus across the street while waiting.

We pre-booked the Omakase menu, a fixed price tasting menu that was honestly a deal regarding price point. We would have been satisfied with the first seven dishes even before we got to the tempura tasting. Standouts included scallop toast, chawanmushi, and scallop tartare. At this point we were more than content with what we already sampled but committed to finish. The tempura featured prawns, lotus root, lobster and more scallop. We finished with a divine ginger ice cream, perfect in size , flavor and consistency. I stopped in at 4:45 on a random Wednesday and was the only customer for a few minutes. It's in an office/medical building near DUMC and the VA hospitals, so students and residents seem to be who they cater to. The high stools at the bar were very comfortable, but I didn't have to think about that for long, because my order came out so quickly. I ordered two rolls from the BOGO menu, and they were out in just a few minutes. The chef prepared it very quickly, right in front of me. She passed it across the bar with a big smile. One roll was the Rainbow roll, traditionally a California roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, and white fish wrapped around it on the outside. The second was a house special, the Blue Devil Roll. It is shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with seared filet mignon, eel sauce and scallions. The seared beef was a surprising flavor, along with the eel sauce. Both were gone rather quickly.
