Well. I haven't been here since the height of this place's glory days it seems. It's mostly the skeletal remains of what it used to be. And maybe rightly so. We went for sushi but the prices are so elevated now we didn't get sushi. I used to love their udon but that wasn't an option. We were not greeted nor welcomed in upon entry despite 2 hosts and there was an ominous figure on the right glaring at customers. We got a poke bowl and the miso ramen. They were - ok... the soup was luke warm with a tangled mat of noodles. The broth was ok but didn't taste much like traditional miso. The poke bowl was the best thing we ordered. Still a great place for groups, still casually elegant. I arrived around 5 on a rainy Tuesday, and set at the bar. Service is immediate and friendly, even after the velocity picked up. Silent TVs above the bar (not huge, but not tiny) had everything from sports news to a Bob Ross episode. The background music is not immediately slamming, but I didn't hear anything that wasn't released while I was in high school. Sly Stone, Temptations, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin - it was a Motown minute for sure!! Loved it all! There a section of the menu with 6- and 8- piece rolls that are BOGO if you buy a drink. That's my go-to, and it didn't disappoint. Rainbow roll and a Shiki Crunch (shrimp tempura, avocado, topped with eel sauce and crunchies - yum!!) The one thing missing from the cocktail menu is a gin-based drink. So, I decided to treat myself to a birthday lunch at this lovely restaurant I found on the AA site, thinking, "Why not indulge in some culinary magic?" Sauce is additional cost of 50c which kinda sucks. The bagels are OK but I guess the tempura really throws it off. Next time I probably wouldn't ask for it to be dipped in tempura. This is one of their only options for cooked salmon sushi from what I understand. I liked the sushi. I really liked the orange peel chicken. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and the vegetables seems fresh. However, I hated the fried rice. My colleague and I ordered this for our testing break. we ordered ahead and had it scheduled for pickup 1.5hrs later, because we knew we had limited time to eat. If I wanted sauce on it I had to request it. I stated, it was good to know that this was how they cooked hibachi, because I have never had dry hibachi before. So, if you like dry, sauce less chicken and veggies with rice, then this is your place. If not, then try somewhere else. Pleasantly Surprised! Stopped here while on the road between Wilmington and Greensboro, we make the trip frequently and Will keep trying places hoping will find a good "halfway" food stop that is healthy! Outside it is not super impressive, almost looks like a Chinese buffet from the outside... But when you go inside it is shockingly different! There are probably 100 tables, plenty of seating for busy nights! The bar area is huge and I can imagine that this place on a Friday or Saturday night is probably a hotspot. During our Thursday afternoon drive though, it was relatively quiet. Food service was extremely fast. Wait staff is in short supply and there are signs everywhere that let you know this, so it can be a few minutes before someone gets to you or in between drink service and ordering. Paul was our server and he was absolutely amazing, worth well over the 20% standard tip! Not only is he apologetic about any wait, he is extremely knowledgeable about the food they serve and ingredients. He knows what to recommend depending on your taste as well. We had the chicken lettuce wraps, fabulous... The pork and chicken Gyoza deep-fried... Again, fabulous... And hubby had to sushi rolls and said they were fresh and delicious! Usually not an important factor but I will say that the hot tea here is stupendous, they do looseleaf traditional style in a tea pot, and the ginger peach was divine! The restaurant is clean, and walking past the prep area everything looked clean as well. Bathrooms decently clean. Starting with the wontons, they where flavorful and the sauce boosted it tenfold. Next, the crab rolls. They had nice simple crab flavor, iconic. And finally, the ramen. It wasn't as much of a hit as the others, with a same-ey ramen taste, every other sitdown restaurant ramen tasted like this. **high yield alert** After hitting up some of the other sushi buffets in the area, I was skeptical of the yield of a non-buffet sushi spot. But don't get me wrong, this place is high yield. Especially if you consider that some of the other sushi buffets have jacked up their prices recently. First off, if you order a drink, the sushi is BOGO. And I am not talking about the crappy rolls. The rolls here are premium. We got a bunch, including those with tuna, toro, salmon, avocado, etc. We also hit up the poke bowls. We ended up getting 2 poke bowls and 6 rolls for 4 people and the amount of food we got was unreal. It actually felt like we were in a buffet. The poke bowls were MONSTER. I am not sure if they portioned for 1 human because it felt more like a poke platter. Fish was fresh, especially the toro which is my fav. Veggies were fresh too. So yummy. This is a huge restaurant. It seems fancy but it's really casual. My family of 4 with two kids dined in for dinner on a Friday night around 9pm. We were seated in the bar area. I thought it was weird but realized the bartender was running the bar and several tables including ours. I believe his name is Paul. He was a brunette Caucasian man with his hair pulled back in a pony tail. His service was phenomenal. He kept making sure to check on us, fill our waters and get our food out timely. Even though he had like 4 tables and the bar to run. This place has a lot of potential to be a 5 star restaurant. Food was ok not bad, but it could be better. They need more front of the house staff. There were three teens at the entrance as hostess and they were not friendly. They seem to have a ton of people in the back cooking. However, only one bartending manning the bar and serving. However, we've been waiting more than 15 minutes and still not have a table while the restaurant was quite slow and many empty spaces. Then, we ordered plenty of sushi and some Thai foods. The Thai's food was great, however, the sushi was really terrible. The salmon was super smells and stinky. The tuna was horrible. We've never been thru this terrible fish like this before. Our daughters are sushi lovers, they ordered a lot of sushi and they all gave up. We had complained and someone told us that's their best fish. I was " Oh Yeah ...". This place used to be a go to for me and my boyfriend,however the last few trips we took were no longer the same and we've stopped going altogether. I'm disappointed because this place was special to us as we frequented it when we were only dating. The prices are high considering the portions of food that you receive. The servers are not always the best,but I typically have had a positive experience with the managers. I also enjoy the ambiance because it makes me feel like I'm in a restaurant that would exist in a Y2K television drama. Inflation affects everyone understandably but by essentially doubling the price per piece they are now competing with higher end sushi places. Shiki Sushi was recommended to me by some friends and unfortunately, my wife and I were disappointed with this place and cannot recommend it. The sushi we got from here wasn't good. Simply put, what you get here is cheap-quality, Americanized Pan-Asian fare. Our expectations were lowered when a customer walked in after us and ordered pad Thai and chow fun while we were waiting on our sushi order. That's not to say you can't have good sushi at a place that also serves pad Thai, but more often than not, the sushi at these types of restaurants are run-of-the-mill and average at best. If you're looking for "authentic" high-quality sushi just even solid mid-level sushi, look elsewhere. Another thing that turned us off about Shiki Sushi was their total lack of enforcement of their own posted COVID-19 safety measures. During our visit, the front door had a sign that read: "We are following the mayor's executive order regarding face coverings. Face coverings are required while waiting in the lobby area." Inside, there were two pay stations, each with signs that read: "No face covering. No service." While we waited in the lobby for about 25 minutes for our takeout order, we watched as maskless customer after maskless customer entered the restaurant and the employees didn't bat an eye. There was zero enforcement of their own rules. At the time of our visit and currently, masks are required in the city and county of Durham where Shiki Sushi is located. I understand it's not really the employees' jobs to enforce masks and I don't envy being put in their position. They're trying to make a living and hard-hit restaurants are trying to make money, but what's the point of posting all these signs if you're going to blatantly ignore them? Also, each pay station was only partially covered by plexiglass. They almost might as well not had any plexiglass at all because when employees interacted with customers at these counters, they spoke over the non-plexiglass-covered portions. So, there was no protection for the employees from the maskless customers (in case you didn't know, you wear masks to protect others, not the other way around). I'm sorry, but what a joke. The partial plexiglass and signs with no enforcement are a half-assed attempt which really don't increase the safety of Shiki employees nor their guests. We ordered four items to-go: * Chirashi-Don ($17.95) - 12 pieces of sashimi (3 each of tuna, salmon, red snapper, and white tuna a.k.a escolar), imitation crab, egg (tamago), served over sushi rice * Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe ($25.95) - 5 pieces of nigiri (smoked salmon, eel, albacore, shrimp, and sweet shrimp), and 9 pieces of sashimi (3 each of tuna, salmon, and red snapper), and a Dynamite Spicy roll (tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, scallion, spicy mayo and smelt roe inside; tempura-fried outside; topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds) * Bagel Roll ($12.95) - salmon, cream cheese, and avocado inside; tempura-fried outside; topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds * Scallop Bonsai roll ($14.95) - scallop, salmon, eel and avocado inside; nori (seaweed) outside; topped with eel sauce The roll menu says, "Buy one, get one free sushi available with beverage purchase," but our server offered the BOGO deal to us anyway, which was nice of him. The lesser value of the two rolls is the one that is free (so the Bagel Roll above was free). On all three rolls we received - the Dynamite Spicy, Bagel, and Scallop Bonsai rolls - there was no eel sauce nor sesame seeds as described on the menu. What a letdown. I'm generally not a fan of Americanized sushi rolls that are stuffed with all sorts of ingredients like cream cheese and then fried, but I was willing to give the Bagel Roll a chance since my friend liked it so much. I hate to say I disagree with her. I ate one piece and knew it wasn't for me. The salmon was cooked dry and the roll, as a whole, was dense and bland. I ate another piece, hoping it would taste better, but it didn't. The Dynamite Spicy roll fared better. It wasn't as dry. The Scallop Bonsai roll was decent, but not great. The ingredient quality in the latter was A-OK. I love chirashizushi and Shiki's chirashi-don was quite underwhelming for me. The sushi rice was entirely too warm (hot even), not flavored/seasoned enough, and its texture was off (soggy, mushy). Strangely, a layer of iceberg lettuce separated the sashimi from the rice. The types of fish were very basic (bottom of the barrel), the selection was limited, and the quality was ehh... Also the cuts of fish seemed quite rough (large slabs, instead of more thoughtful slices) and presentation was lacking. The "Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe" was OK at best. There was a bit too much rice on each piece of nigiri and the rice suffered the same problems as the rice in the chirashi-don described above. Also, the piece of snapper was low grade, stringy, and unappetizingly chewy. Yikes. Shiki Sushi has its place, but it's not the type of restaurant for us. read more
