I asked a friend for a sushi recommendation a step from grocery store options and he pointed me here. Solid choice! I stopped in at 4:45 on a random Wednesday and was the only customer for a few minutes. It's in an office/medical building near DUMC and the VA hospitals, so students and residents seem to be who they cater to. It's not overly decorated, but it is a little nicer than the offices in other parts of the building. The high stools at the bar were very comfortable, but I didn't have to think about that for long, because my order came out so quickly. I ordered two rolls from the BOGO menu, and they were out in just a few minutes. The chef prepared it very quickly, right in front of me. She passed it across the bar with a big smile. One roll was the Rainbow roll, traditionally a California roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, and white fish wrapped around it on the outside. The second was a house special, the Blue Devil Roll. It is shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with seared filet mignon, eel sauce and scallions. The seared beef was a surprising flavor, along with the eel sauce. Both were gone rather quickly. Came back here after a few years and had a good experience. Came for dinner and was seated immediately. We got edamame and seaweed salad as apps along with the firecracker (sushi app). Those all came out and were delicious. We really enjoyed the crispy tuna app (firecracker)! I would definitely get this again. Our server was great and checked on us frequently and mad sure to refill our drinks. We order a few sushi rolls and it was all 10/10! We came on a Tuesday night so it was 50% off rolls as a daily special. Would highly recommend this place for sushi. I came here with my two kids after a doctors appointment, and had a terrible experience. We were standing at the small front desk waiting patiently when two white women walked in and stood next to us. They were greeted immediately, while the staff completely ignored me and my children. When I spoke up and said we were here first, the service person looked at us but stayed silent. That was the moment I decided to take my kids to leave immediately. I will not return to this restaurant for the following reasons: 1. The food is not good. We ordered a pad see-ew and a drunken noodle. They both tasted the same - very basic non-descriptive sauce indistinguishable from the other. Super boring no flavor and nothing interesting. 2. They have a cleanliness rating of only 90.5. Even though the diviest fast food restaurants in Durham can manage mid 90s and even 98 or 99. 3. They charge to use a debit card. The whole world uses debit cards and they don't get charged for debit card fees. They only get charged for credit card fees. So it feels like they're just skimming more money from us. 4. I specially asked at pick up if there were utensils in the bag. I was assured they were. There were no utensils in the bag. A small thing. But along with numbers 1. 2 and 3 this restaurant is a big no for me Plus, it's expensive. read more

Listen, if you need edible sushi while you're stuck at Big Duke, this is certainly better than cafeteria sushi and perhaps one step above Harris Teeter sushi. You can definitely tell that fish has been previously frozen, but I've never gotten sick here, so if you're willing to drown yours in sauces, you probably wouldn't even notice. Service is usually friendly, I've definitely found it to be better when I'm dining with others than when I'm alone, but that's the case at a lot of places. Several things stand out: the thinnest miso soup I've ever had - barely any miso flavor; "Asian" salad uses ranch dressing; and worst of all: outrageous fish-to-rice ratio in their nigiri sushi (see picture). People were constantly picking up orders. It had to be good right? Sushi Love definitely seems like a quick stop sushi shop for college students. The menu is overwhelming with lots of sushi options to choose. The menu was beautiful with colorful photos but too many choices, similar sushi rolls, and options. I ordered two rolls, the fish tasted a bit off on one and the other one was quite chewy. I was unable to finish my rolls. Overall, customer service was great but the sushi was below average in my honest opinion. This is definitely our go-to sushi place in Durham. There is free lot and garage parking, with several other food and beer spots in the same plaza. They have BOGO sushi and loads of options. You really can't beat the price, service and taste. Our absolute definite sushi-order is the Blue Devil (seared filet on top!). Tonight we tried 3 new ones for us: Green Wave (was a little oddly sweet, but still yet good), the Sweet Dragon (really tasty, with eel and avocado slices), and the Tornado Roll (fried, with paperthin shoestring potatoes on top!) ---All were unique and tasty. We also got the salt and pepper calamari and our other absolute definite order -- the Ika Sansei appetizer.
