This is our favorite Chinese take out restaurant in Winston-Salem! It's bot unlike thousands of Chinese take out places across America. But, the food is amazing! The restaurant is named for Kowloon island, across the bay from the city of Hong Kong. Like most, the menu is extensive with dozens of chicken, beef, and pork dishes. Each is accompanied by fried rice, white rice, or a variety of noodle sides. We like General Tso's chicken, a sweet and spicy sauce over bitesized chunks of fried chicken breasts. At Kowloon, this dish (and others) is cooked to order in a giant, very hot wok. The dinner portion is certainly enough chicken for two. We order a side of pork fried rice and share it. The dish includes some small broccoli florets. The dish also comes with an egg roll. We order an extra one. To start our meal, we ordered a quart of Hot & Sour soup. Just the right kick, fresh mushrooms, bamboo shoots, chunks of tofu, and chicken broth. Served with crispy Chinese noodles. It is really good. I've been eating at Kowloon for 30 years. Mixed feelings about this establishment. Pros: food tastes good and is prepared quickly... Cons: while food tastes good they use excessive oil to keep food from sticking to wok! If you ask for less oil they say they can't use less and suggest you get steamed selections. I believe this is not true and rather lazy of their chefs. Also, the prices on their menus is not the correct price, many items cost more. Evidently they ordered too many menus and are trying to use them up before ordering new menus with correct prices. Prices are off by 10/15/or 20+%... They don't mention it before you order. read more

This place has a dozen or so laminated booths, but this is primarily a take out spot. They offer the standard Chinese American dishes, and they list 27 lunch special with either fried or white rice included. I went with Mongolian Beef and Spicy Beef along with an Egg Roll. The egg roll was quite nice, especially when a liberal amount of hot mustard is applied. The Spicy Beef was nice and spicy, though there were more vegetables than beef by a large amount. The Mongolian Beef was not at all bad, though a bit more heat would have been nice. All in all, this was average Chinese American fare - there are better choices out there. If I could do zero stars I would.. The lady cook, owner was rude as all get out.. I first asked if the lobster sauce was white or brown. Born and raised up north it's brown not white snot, she was rude answering that question. Also I asked if the crab egg foo young was real crab meat or imitation . She lied and said real, I ordered and later discovered it was imitation.. now to my order ... I placed a large order for my party of 6.. about $80 worth. I literally ordered on the fly, just scrolling down the menu. Once my order was done the guy at the register who was nice told me to come get my bag. He handed it me the bag and the lady snatched it out of my hand and yelled "what did you order?! " I said I can't remember all because it was a large order. I said a couple items and she kept yelling "what you order ?!" I then said maybe you should have given me a copy of my receipt or an order number so that YOU could keep track of what people ordered. I typically get chinese food to go, which is what I did today. Prices are affordable and make sure to ask for extra sauce! The staff has always been friendly in my experience. I actually stopped in spur of the moment... I had to run into Harris Teeter and on my way out, this little Chinese restaurant caught my eye and I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered a lunch special of Sesame Chicken and fried rice and then added a Qt. of wanton soup. The wait time was under 10 minutes! The food was excellent and the portion size was HUGE! I ate as much as I could of the chicken and rice and it looked like I barely touched it! The santons were good though, the broth completely lacked flavor. It was almost like plain water. Consistently one of the best Americanized Chinese take-out places in the city. Get their kung pao chicken and thank me later. It's different from other places with lightly fried chicken and this sweet/savory/spicy sauce with vegetables. This place is nasty. The cashier/ cook was making some type of Raw beef Wonton on the counter. When I came in she was trying to take my order and my cash without washing her hands. I told her to wash her hand because that's how disease spread. She got offended and wash her hand in a bucket of water that was disgusting. Ah yes, my local haunt for greasy Chinese goodness. Look, it's American Chinese food. Nothing fancy, nothing particularly healthy, but it IS tasty. And FAST! My only complaint is that they don't deliver except to the Medical Center nearby, but my lazy butt can use the exercise to go pick it up anyway. If you're in the area (or even just shopping at the Harris Teeter next door) and you're hankering for some good Chinese, drop in and place an order. It'll be done in 10 minutes. During the month of August 2010, They received a high 70's inspection. One of the major notes was that the restuarant was using a piece of wood with nails in it to turn the chicken. Also bugs were found in the restaurant. I cant verify the food quality, After I read that, I will never eat there again. Even if you clean it up and stop using the homemade chicken turner, that is just common sense. read more

Perfect Americanized, Greasy Chinese food. Family owned and run by the same friendly family for many years. The sanitation scores are a little concering, especially the review from Jonathan A. about the homemade chicken tuner. A quick glimpse at ther sanitation scores show that they have indeed improved their scores, but consistently fail to properly sanitize and protect food from contamination. Caveat emptor. This is your basic take-out group, so anticipate greasy and unhealthy fast food, but if you're into that sort of thing, it's quite good. This place is not worth your time or money. First of all the service leaves something to be desired. When I started giving my order, the cashier cut me off to say "I can't hear you. What do you want to order?" There was no measure of courtesy. Words like please and I'm sorry were not part of her vocabulary. I was wearing a mask so I understand she might need me to repeat but the manner she expressed it was rude. After I gave my order and sat down the only other customer waiting had overheard and volunteered that his experience with her was not good either. Ate there today (7/14/18) and noticed the new people working there. Haven't been there as often in the past 3 months, and asked if they had changed ownership and lady said yes, a few months ago. I got egg drop soup, which I had ordered thru the years, and within 10 minutes of leaving, I had a VERY upset stomach in Harris Teeter while grocery shopping. I am home with continuing upset stomach. Let me just be up front, there is NO good Chinese restaurants in Winston-Salem. This place deserves a 3 star for many reasons. I will attempt to list them below as I have gotten to known the owner pretty well: 1. I come here mainly for their vegetable chow fun. I like them because the owners are a Cantonese family, they also cook their food themselves, and they tend to capture the essence of authentic Cantonese flavor quite well. I would say as far as authenticity goes, this restaurant and Malay are the only two that even comes close in Winston. 2. I have been going to this restaurant for 2.5 years, it seems like for the past year or so, their portion has drastically cut back. This is a disappointment. 3. The first time I came here, my rice noodle was served in a plastic container with a cracked lid, this made me pretty angry. I don't recall but there could have also been a piece of debris in my food. 4. They never bothered to fix the sign of their restaurant, half of the lighting was off for the past year. read more

I've only been to three Chinese places here in Winston, but they're pretty difficult to compare. I ordered the beef and broccoli and felt that there was a bit too much broccoli and not enough beef. It was quite greasy, but it was prepared quite quickly and was very affordable. Dinner for two for $9! There are also places to sit, and is located in a great plaza with a Harris Teeter and Dollar Tree. The rice's texture is a bit mushy but it wasn't bad... just different. The food I ordered from doordash tastes so bad. I ordered 4 things from this restaurant and none of them tastes the way I thought they would have tasted. The bean curd is the worst. It tastes so weird and has no "sour and spicy" flavor as it was described. It's just a bunch of bland tofu cubes soaked in hoisin sauce. The vegetable soup is also a fail, why would it have green bell pepper in it? What kind of Asian soup is that? The soup is so so so bland with a sad little amount of carrots, broccoli and cabbage in it. The worst is probably the fried rice. It has so many little onions that just make it taste so odd. I the mushroom that they put in the rice also tastes like they're not fully cooked. The rice doesn't have the smoky fried rice flavor that you would find in other places. All I can say is this place doesn't know how to cook, they think they can sell bland food and other people will just be happy paying for them. read more
