I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to Chinese food! I love love love Chinese food but I feel the Chinese food in NC is very different then what I'm used to in California. That being said the gal who greeted me was very friendly and the menu gave me hope. I think I'm going to need to give it another try. There were definitely positives like the roasted pork was what I would expect in my fried rice. I took my food to go but the restaurant seemed inviting and had plenty of room for folks. First time coming here in over a few years for a lunch date with my wife. Was one of our go to spots for awhile, so it was nice coming back. The foods still pretty good. There's other serviceable Chinese food spots in the area, but they've always been consistent with their lunch service and as a sit down option, we prefer them over almost anyone else in the area. My wife got the General Tsos chicken with fried rice and wonton soup. I got the Szechuan beef with fried rice and it was delicious. Their beef is always cooked very well for thin cuts. Not chewy, very tender and flavorful. The veggies that come with it, the sliced celery, green peppers and carrots were cooked a little under to my liking, but it paired well with the beef flavor and the sauce its prepared in. Didn't get the chance to taste any of my wife's food but she was happy with it. Their food is always prepared very well anyways, so it was no surprise. Wasn't much of a lunchtime crowd, so the setting was quiet and we enjoyed it. I wish they'd bring their Sunday buffet back. Pre covid, we would visit them after church often and got to sample most of everything on their menu, which was also very good as well. That's the only complaint I have I suppose. read more

It's always a pleasure to come to this hidden gem. It's off the beaten path in a private strip mall. One of those places that are found by word of mouth. The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxed. They play traditional Chinese music in the background which makes it feel like you are overseas. The fish tank and artwork also transports you back to their homeland. Their food is traditional Schezhuan style. All the dishes are amazing and the best part is how affordable they are. The Mon-Sat lunch menu is the best. Plates are just enough to satisfy you and it comes with a cup of your choice of Hot & Sour, Egg Drop or Wonton soup. All 3 are great. My wife got the garlic shrimp with white rice. Shrimp is perfectly cooked, not rubbery and the green peppers, celery & carrots are also soft with a little crunch. I got the Mongolian beef. Tender beef cooked with scallions and onions accompanied by choice of white or fried rice. Make sure to ask for Chili Oil on the side to get that extra kick. It may look spicy but it is not so bring it on. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. Love this place and one of the few in town that has great food with reasonable prices. They don't hit you with extra unnecessary prices! read more

I visited this place several times recently to see what their food was like now, had been there several times a few years back. The menu here is rather broad - most of the usual Chinese American items (General Tso Chicken, Mongolian Beef, etc.), a few Hunan and Szechuan dishes, several duck choices, a variety of noodle dishes, a number of Indo-Chinese items (Gobi Manchurian, Hakka Noodles, Darjeeling Noodles etc., for example), and several Thai dishes. I tried the Twice Cooked Pork, and 3 Indo-Chinese dishes - Hakka Noodles, Darjeeling Noodles, and Gobi Manchurian. The pork dish was rather nice with a nice heat level, and still crispy chopped vegetables. The pork was tender and flavorful, though it was not especially plentiful. The lunch special comes with soup and rice. The Gobi Manchurian is a favorite dish of mine and I've eaten it at Curry And Noodle in Winston, Noor in Greensboro, and Salt and Pepper in High Point - all great versions. This, unfortunately, was not anywhere near that level, in fact it was God awful. The cauliflower was covered in a gooey, tasteless batter, and smothered in a thick "gravy"! Darjeeling Noodles originated in the city of Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal, a city renowned for its uniquely favored & expensive tea! This is a rather fiery dish flavored primarily by Dalle Chiles, also called wild cherry chilies, and a variety is available in the USA. This dish also contains Sichuan peppercorns, white peppercorns, garlic, soy sauce, and a touch of tomato - there are a lot of variations with some additional items. This was a solid dish and there was plenty of it, but it was a mild version, lacking the usual red color of the sauce. I don't know what Chiles were used, but apparently there was not a lot of them. I wouldn't go with this dish again. This spot is a decent option for a selection of Asian and Indo-Chinese fare. read more

First time coming here. Came with a few co-workers. First impression was that it's a cute restaurant with a nice atmosphere. I have been driving pst this restaurant for years and didn't know it since you can't see it too well from Healy Drive. It was fairly empty for it being noon on a Friday afternoon. Was seated right away and our drink order was taken. The waitress was very nice and patient and great to answer questions and brought our drinks out ASAP. Very friendly service and a nice atmosphere. The food was solid but nothing stood out as spectacular. We enjoyed the wonton soup and dumpling to start. My son loved the soup. I had the Peking duck. The sauce was good and the skin on the duck was crispy but I was not a fan of the mushu pancakes as wrappers. I prefer a steamed bun. The prices are reasonable too. Delivery was quick via a delivery service but the food was not really great. I ordered chicken lo mien and it tasted as if someone either used liquid smoke in it or someone was smoking nearby while it was prepared. The chicken egg foo yung was a little blackened. They appeared to have deep fried it? And the gravy for it was really kind of tasteless and it was broken. (Lumpy non-smooth texture.) My spring rolls were greasy and it soaked through the bag. Now I really dislike leaving a negative review anywhere and perhaps I'm spoiled because I am originally from a city with a TON authentic Chinese restaurants. But this one I can't just let go and say nothing. I'm hoping it was an off night for them. in all honestly I'm feeling a little bad as well because the order was so expensive. Yes part of that was due to the delivery service but the food was really kind of overpriced for the quality. I don't generally mind paying for quality. The vegetable bean curd didn't come with any rice or anything and the sauce was bland and soupy and made me feel sick a few bites in and felt sick the morning after as well. I have this place bookmarked for a while now and decided to try after hearing they have an exclusive Indo Chinese Section in the Menu . Today we stuck to ordering only from the Indo Chinese Menu and got Manchu Chicken Soup and Chicken Manchurian Gravy. The food was alright , although they tried to replicate the taste of Indo Chinese dishes pretty closely they didnt quite nail it . I wanted to try schezuan chicken but the waitress Insisted that I go for Chicken Manchurian instead as she thought we might like the spicy stuff . I just left this place and can say this place was DISGUSTING. The food was horrible & don't know how anyone can give it any kind of rating. I got a shrimp lo mein and it was DROWNED in soy sauce. It was SO salty I got a headache. I wanted to try shrimp chow mein & decided after tasting it that it was, gross. It had no color, no taste & although the waitress explained it, I don't think she knew it would come out as a gob of gelatinous celery/cabbage. I kindly asked for them to remove it from the tab because it looked like a gob of blended mess stuck together with either flour or maybe gelatin. The waitress asked and I was told no, because it was explained. Again, not the waitresses fault she said it was a celery, cabbage mix so I'm thinking it's a mixed vegetable type dish. The roll was gray inside, no flavor & even though I ate the other stuff it was not anything I will be returning for. The right thing to do in this case was to have taken it off my ticket. We have chosen Szechuan Palace as our favorite Chinese restaurant in the Winston Salem area and have been eating there approximately once a week for the past 5 years. We love their entire menu and we tried virtually everything. Their entire staff has grown to know us over the years and they are very welcoming, efficient, helpful & thankful in their efforts every time. The ambiance is somewhat sparse but the quality of the food and the way they treat us every time outweighs any lack of dining glamour. Overview: Szechuan Palace is a sit-down, medium to large sized Chinese restaurant close to Stratford Dr on the south-west side of Winston Salem, slightly west of the Hanes Mall and close to the car dealerships. Situated in a strip mall with plenty of parking. The Establishment: Slightly dim but non-romatic, all-indoor, Chinese decorated but not overly gaudy or distracting. Not very crowded whenever I go. Has an aquarium near the entrance to look at if your lunch conversations run sour. The Service: Attentive, quick, polite. The Food: 1) Twice cooked pork - Meh. Small pieces that are not as flavorful as I would like. Smaller portion than the chicken. Drier than I was hoping. 2) Kung Pao chicken - Amazing. Crispy outside, great mix of sweet, sour, and savory, good portion. 3) Mongolian Beef - Amazing. Soft, savory, well marinaded. Conclusions: Szechuan Palace is a nice, sit-down Chinese restaurant that serves delicious and flavorful kung pao chicken and mongolian beef and mediocre twice-cooked pork. It's clean, the prices are moderate, especially if you come for the lunch specials, and the servers speak English well. I personally think it's the best Chinese-specific food restaurant in Winston Salem but I have only tried about 4 or 5 so take my opinion with a grain of salt. read more
