It's very hard to beat Kozy's Cyclery. I have an OLD Schwinn Airdyne exercise bicycle. I need to add some foot straps to the pedals. My husband is having lower leg and foot problems that make it difficult to keep his foot on the pedals while riding. I tried to replace the pedals myself with some pedals with toe clips I bought from a near bike store. I couldn't get the old pedals off. I said this thing is OLD, 40+ years, and hasn't been in production for decades. I took the old beast in to the bike shop that sold me the pedals (Not Kozy's). They got the pedals off, but didn't have pedals with straps / toe clips that could be attached, and no idea where to get them. They told me to contact Schwinn. I took the bike to Kozy's on Halstead Street. I told George in the service department what was going on. George took a look, understood my problem, and ordered some that would fit. That's experience. I've previously written a very positive review of Kozy's... until I recently found out their service membership is sort of a scam. My sales rep really pushed the service plan when I purchased my bike. Besides pre-paying for service, she emphasized the speed. From their brochure (see photo): "Bring your bike in for service by 12pm on a weekday and we'll have your bike ready to go by the same day by 5pm." After nearly two years of not using the service contract, I took my bike in for the first time on Thursday(7/18) to the Halsted store. I was surprised to be told my bike would not be ready until next Wednesday (7/24.) That's 6 days! Making matters worse, it seems like people without club memberships get higher priority. Two instances: with no service contract, my son took his bike in for a medium size repair last week and it was completed within two hours. And the man in front of me on Thursday was promised his repair the same day also (again no membership.) Seems like pre-paying for club membership delivers the exact opposite of "preferred service." Just to be give Kozy's a chance to honor their contract, I even emailed both my original sales rep and the general Kozy's email box about my concern. Three days later, still radio silence. I bought a fairly expensive and brand new foldable bike from them, and it broke within a few weeks. Every time I brought it to them, they gave the bike back with a poor repair that only lasted a few days or even a few minutes. I felt like they scammed me, as they did not inform me before I bought the bike that its gear does not allow for any sort of pressure applied when pedaling, and they never offered me my money back or a new bike when I called them out on that. read more

I bought a Specialized Rockhopper from Kozy's back in 2007. After 13 years, sadly it was stolen at the height of COVID summer. Due to ongoing supply chain issues, bikes continue to be scarce so I started looking in February. I placed a pre-order on Kozy's website for a Rockhopper Comp and promptly received a reply: the manufacturer was already sold out and Kozy's wait list was packed, but they had a base model Rockhopper at the Milwaukee Ave location. These people are incredibly condescending and unhelpful. I came to buy new brake pads. It was winter and I wasn't sure what kind I needed. I asked if could flip my bike over and take the wheel off so they could see of they had them in stock. The moron that I talked to said "that's going to be too big of an operation" but if I wanted to I could go outside into the alcove around the corner and check. I did just that, went back inside asked if they had them in stock and ordered them from REI. This is not the first experience I've had like this with Kozys. Just had the best experience here! Went to get a quick tune up for my bike. I got right in without an appointment. They oiled my chain, did a few adjustments and got me in my way. I was so pleasantly surprised when I asked what I owed and they said no charge! Wow, made my day! They are enforcing social distancing and manage capacity by locking the door and letting people in/out as capacity allows. I felt very safe. Thank you Kozy's! I cannot stress more that these people will rip you off... I took my bike in to these people for a few missing parts and a tune up. I did get all the missing parts put tryon but that's it, I'm still unable to use some of my gears. And you would think that a time up would include air in the tires. Not for these guys, didn't even get air.. it's like they didn't even do a tune up, gears don't work and flat ass tires. I'm never go back to this con job business again. read more

Ahh, there's a good reason why so many people have been rating Kozy's so high over the last few years -- service is absolutely top notch. I appreciate how honest they are and explaining that they're struggling with supply due to a global bike shortage, but they still try with their in-store inventory and have things shipped around if they do have inventory. I came in here looking for an e-bike, and first left with a Charge City. That bike was fine, but after a week, I realized that it just wasn't working for me, so I came back and asked for an exchange -- and everyone was super chill and comfortable with it. Kozy's even took on the cost on a broken part on the bike I returned even though all they had to go on was my word that it was like that when I got it. That's the kind of delightful customer service that makes me want to bring everyone here. There's a good supply of bike seats, helmets, bells and such available too, and I like the honest advice -- and that staff aren't uncomfortable suggesting going elsewhere or online to get what you need. I even saw the staff suggesting alternative repair stores in the area to another customer when they knew they couldn't perform the repair needed. Just awesome all around. read more

So I came to this location in 2020 to build my custom bike which I had been carefully collecting parts for over a year during the lockdown. They gave me a call saying that they couldn't do it because they needed a very common wrench to tighten the bottom bracket. Unbelievable. Fast forward to 2022 and I caught a flat on the lakefront and stopped at this location to have them install a new tube. While waiting I heard the mechanic say " I wonder who this belongs to ". Ok, whatever, maybe I don't look like a guy who rides a 5 thousand dollar custom. I asked them to check for anything sharp inside the rim and install new rim tape if needed. I pay my $28 and went outside to check the work. Immediately I detected a rub in the disc brake, I got my ratchet out and adjust. So today I decided to pull my rims off to tune the spokes and install new panaracer slicks. What I found was a complete joke. They removed the very nice factory rim tape and installed tape that was too narrow leaving sharp edges inside. Now I have to order new tape and redo both. If you want to be judged and called a thief and receive the WORST service at the highest price then go here. These guys were charging over msrp during the lockdown gouging people during the bike shortage. Not a good shop. read more

Great local bike shop with friendly service. I come here every once in a while to get replacement parts for my bike, like break pads and tubes. Things are pretty reasonably priced, and I always like buying from a local shop anyway instead of amazon. A few months back I noticed one of my bikes was missing a screw to hold the front wheel in place, and they not only gave me the missing part free of charge, but also gave me another small piece I didn't even notice was missing. The good: Everyone from the cashier to the service guys were friendly and helpful. Went in with the purpose of looking for a U-lock mount, and not only did I find one in 2 minutes (thanks to help) but also they installed it free of charge. I was in the shop for a total of 10-15 minutes with a mission accomplished. The not-so-good: Place is definitely old and has seen some days, so it's weathered inside compared to some newer bike shops. Kind of a grimy feel. Just made my first purchase of a bike from Kozy's and my experience couldn't have been better. Met a great gent named Benjamin there that took me from being super intimidated to even go in a nice bike store and walked me through the process. He was so patient and let me try several different options several times until I arrived at my bike. I ended up with a high quality bike that looks like it'd be at home on the streets of Amsterdam. Kozy's also has a great after purchase policy including two free tune ups during the winter months so your bike will be ready for the spring. I've had to return a couple retail items - different reasons, things happen - and they treated me like a top patron. They have pumps outside while they're open. Very disappointing. I ride year round and depend on my bike about as much as people depend on their cars. I actually purchased my first and second bike form this place. Sadly, I will be shopping elsewhere. My first disappointment fell when attempting to purchase new riding shoes. To no surprise to me, they were out of my size. Nothing they had there was in my size actually. Not too uncommon as I have a common size. Regardless, they were shipping them to me from another location. The shoes never arrived. The order was never fulfilled and they were never shipped. I had to inconveniently stop back and pick them up on another day. Good thing I did not have to pay for shipping. Strike one..... A week later I dropped off my fancy bike to have serviced. I am getting ready for a long distance ride and I want it to be ready. The man I left my bike with seemed SUPER stoned, He was also really rude too. Strike 2.... Shitty service.... I received a call my bike was ready. GREAT! My mom wanted to take care of the charge and gave me her card number to charge it. It was her way of donating to the charity I am cycling for. They refused to let me pay for it over the phone "for my protection". Apparently my business to them means nothing. As a consistent spender, you would think that you be enough. WHATEVER... ANOTHER inconvenience. Strike 3.... Now I am pissed.... I went to go pick up my bike. Handed the guy my credit card and went to change into my riding gear. I came out to sign for my card and was handed a receipt. Apparently he signed my card for me. What ever happened to the whole "my protection" thing? He handed me a ticket and I went to the service counter to pick up my bike. Again, the SAME rude ass guy was there and he was a punk yet again. On my way out the guy at the counter didn't even say "have a nice day" or acknowledge me. He was too busy texting on his phone. Strike 4,5,&6! I rode my bike 2 blocks and started hearing a noise. Looks like the service job I had done SUCKED! STRIKE 7! DAMIT! UGH! That rude jerk face! I should have gone else where, lesson learned! We live in a cycling city. There are TONS of great places to go. Turnin in Lincoln Square, Johnny Sprockets, to name a few. I find no reason to continue to support this location. As a cyclist, and an instructor at 2 gyms, of a minimum of 5 classes a week, I will encourage my riders to go elsewhere. read more

I was already a skeptic about this place the first time I came in with a flat tire on my bike and they asked for $22 to fix it. Right there and then I walked my bike half a mile up the street to my trusted shop where I knew I could swap it out for $10. Being the only bike shop within a few blocks of itself, Kozy's prices are way above industry standard. This leads me to believe they are taking advantage of the average American casual cyclist simply because they don't know what they should expect. The staff there all are friendly, but seemed more interested in making a sale than helping me find exactly what I knew I needed. But I wanted to give them a chance before I drew any conclusions. A few months later I bought a Groupon for a bicycle tune-up there since I was overdue for one. They claimed and tried to convince me that my bike was in such bad shape that they wouldn't be able to perform a tune-up, and they tried to sell me some of their bikes. I got my bike fixed at my trusted shop and rode it for another year before I decided to sell it in order to upgrade. Fast forward another year or so and I go back to Kozy's (this time to the Megastore on Milwaukee) because I read that they deal Surly road and Cyclocross bikes. They didn't have a model in my size but I tried one out at another store and decided I liked it. I wasn't quite ready to cough up $1400 at Kozy's on the spot, so I slept on it. I then bought that bicycle from my trusted bike guy for about $300 less. Long story short I get the vibe that they exist to take your money. If you are in the area and need some work done on your bike, check out a Nearly New Shop in Uptown just a few blocks north of Kozy's. read more

These guys are the bomb. My bike is basically my car. I use it to get to work, get groceries, everything. So those two wheels are pretty important to me; and I've been to this shop a lot. Every single time I've had maintenance done, they've thrown in some kind of freebie. That's never an expectation on my part. So it is always a pleasant surprise. The space really feels like a Mom and Pop operation. Instead of hurling money at the Koch Brothers through some elaborate portfolio of synergistic business intersections, you can come to this place and feel a direct connection to the local community. When it comes to equipment / parts, you'll pay a bit more than you would through Amazon, but to me it's worth it to support a knowledgable, friendly staff and fellow cyclers. read more

I love bike shops. Today I went in with a very specific beed for a bike for my 4 yr old who has very mild cerebral palsy and has outgrown her tricycle they were so kind and attentive to me. No one tried to hard sell me anything. They listened to all my needs as a concerned Mom and answered all my questions. If you purchase a bike here they even throw in a free tune up twice a yr. Horrible experience with Kozy's on Halstead. The mechanic informed me after performing a tuneup that he was unable to fix the rear disc brake and had no idea when the part would be available. He should have contacted me before starting the work to ask how to proceed. Bottom line is that I was stuck with a 99 buck bill for my unsafe bike. The store manager offered me a 16 buck refund for my trouble. What a joke! And I have purchased several bike from Kozy's in the past. Never again. read more

I brought my bike in here so many times, getting a new tire, gears, after my seat was stolen, etc. The people who run the place are great, and taught me how to do minor fixes myself. I love the staff here. Always do a great job on my bike. The people in the front have always been very helpful , the people in the back fix my bike to perfection. I come here fairly frequently , though not a big spender. Felt obligated to review today after I witnessed a manager making a scene during business hours. After the doors opened I walked in to get my bike serviced. As I walked around the shop , the manager ( woman ) loudly ripped the employees working the shop to shreds. Yelling at them very loudly and for probably 15 min. There was no regard to the fact that the store was open and this was a public display. Even more concerning for me is that I don't want to shop for a bike or contribute to a store that hosts negative vibes like that. Not my scene. Get it together. Treat your employees well. Went in expecting to have to buy something - but.............. I have a carbon fiber seat post for my 29" hardtail that started slipping and the post clamp bolt was not holding it anymore. So I brought the seat post in as the carbon fiber has some scarring from the slippage and the post clamp. I asked their opinion on health of the post and if I could get a replacement bolt and/or seat clamp. The service department guys were fantastic -they called over the carbon fiber expert and he gave thumbs down on the post. This was great as a broken post could be disaster! Also they found me a replacement bolt and sent me on my way at no charge! I got home put my old aluminum post on with the same clamp with new bolt and I am good to go! I definitely will be bring my bike back for a tuneup next season! read more
