When we bought our house twenty years ago, one name kept coming up whenever I asked people about an electrician. Krantz. Unfortunately, my old house has knob and tube and for any new fixtures etc we've had to call people out since it's against code (and just plain unsafe) to mess with knob and tube. Knob and tube doesn't work like newer wiring and there's no rhyme or reason why it goes where it does. THAT would be why the guy was banging on Sally's walls. He was trying to figure out the run pattern and where the wiring actually was. They are the only electrician I have used and they have also been great with my clients I recommended them too (I'm a realtor and know many tradespeople). As with anything on here, ymmv, but I don't think it's fair to hit a small family-owned business (at least two generations, maybe three) for something just because you don't understand the specifics of what they are doing. They treat their people well, do great work, and I'm having them back to my house in a few days to give me a quote for removing all of the knob and tube. Isn't that what's supposed to matter? How they actually are doing their job? It's also a Union shop which is important to me, although I've found their prices to be closer to the non-union shops in town. I would like to thank Krantz Electric for the exceptional work done on a livingroom renovation project for us. Your electrician did an excellent job installing the wiring, switch and box for our daughter's ceiling fan.  And wow, she got here ahead of schedule and completed the job in a relatively short amount of time.  She even gave me a few tips on how to set up the remote control receiver for the ceiling fan, which was greatly appreciated. Especially since my instruction manual was a bit vague on that part of the project. Thanks for working us into your schedule and also for being willing to work with less than perfect weather!  Our project wasn't the largest, but I would recommend Krantz Electric for anyone in the Madison and surrounding area who needs high quality work done by professional electricians. We called Krantz to have them take a look at some lights and outlets in our home that haven't been working for some time. The tech informed us that we had some knob-and-tube wiring, and that it would be super expensive to repair; he then spent quite a bit of time walking through the house pounding on the walls in an effort to get things working again. At about an hour, I told him that it would probably make more sense to just call it a day and find another time to get an estimate. We got billed $170 for this visit, which seemed excessive. (Beforehand we were told they charge $108 for trip out and first hour of work). Wish the guy had stopped at an hour, filled us in on the diagnosis, and then asked if we wanted him to continue before pushing forth into an additional hour -- felt like a deliberate effort to rack up additional fees... read more

We needed to replace/expand our service panel, including moving the meter outside. Their estimate was where I expected it to be, their communication was good, and it needed to be, because of timing with a roofer, and including MG&E. The work was done well, the work was efficiently done, and the bill came in several hundred dollars under the estimate. The guys doing the work were polite and considerate. read more

A few years ago we purchased an older home. Our place is now 99 years old and our family has been in it for the last 80-ish years. I have always loved old houses and we are so happy to take over this property, but what we couldn't love was the knob-and-tube wiring we found when we looked inside the walls. Eep! My father-in-law suggested we go with Krantz Electric, being a local business run by a family that has lived in and served the area for over 30 years. We spoke with Joe Krantz and worked directly with Jeff in their Residential Services department; he was friendly and extremely detail oriented. We learned that most, if not all, of the wiring needed to be replaced, some outlets updated, we needed a second circuit and fuse box, with updates needed on the existing box as well. The entire team that came into our home for a few weeks was fantastic. Jeff kept us appraised of where we were in the project and we were easily able to live around the work they were doing; with two very friendly dogs and three cats that could have been a disaster under the wrong circumstances. The electricians were efficient and respectful of us and our space. Despite having to cut into the ceilings and walls (lath and plaster), and the attic floorboards, they left things clean with minimal finish work to be done on our end (we opted to repair the plaster ourselves). They were informative and gave us great advice on the choices we needed to make along the way. In addition to re-wiring the house they added additional outlets (some rooms previously had only one!), installed some ceiling fans that we already had on hand, wired in a house-wide fire alarm/carbon monoxide system, and added ventilation to our sorely outdated bathroom, which previously had none. We're were so happy with the work done that we would, and do, recommend Krantz Electric for any job - large or small. Beyond residential, they provide emergency service, commercial services and solar panel installation. We hope to have them come out again for the latter in coming years. It's great to work with such a well organized and sincere company. Jeff stops us to say hello whenever we bump into him in the community, and as any small-business supporter would agree, that connection combined with stellar service is part of what will bring us back for any future electrical needs. read more

After having some complications running electric to our post light, we got a bill for $945 instead of the $595 we were quoted. They claimed to have spent 6.5 additional hours determining there was concrete in the pipe and they couldn't run the wire. In addition, they charged us for travel. After questioning it the response we got was that $945 was discounted since they didn't find the solution right away. We were told we only had to pay for half of the 3 1/2 hours we were charges for the day they incorrectly told us there was ice in the pipe. I would never use them again. read more

Beware of this business! We had a simple job done with them recently. My wife and I are new to the area and these folks looked reliable. We were quoted $89/hour for the job plus the cost of supplies. They sent two techs because their next job was complicated. I thought nothing of it because we were told only one tech was necessary. They were there for 1.5 hours conducting the job. However, our bill comes a week later and we were billed for 4 hours worth of work! When I called in we were told that we were billed for both techs for two hours! Why?!? We didn't ask for two techs, we were told only one tech would be sent. We were also not told that it would be $89/hr/tech that they send. They lowered it to 3.25 hours worth of labor which is still billing us more than 2x the work that was provided. They even acknowledged that they never told us 2 techs would be coming and admitted that they were only there for and hour and a half. I get that if the job spills into the next hour most places bill you for the next hour but billing for more than 2 hours worth of work is dishonest. The techs were great, only one of them was necessary, but they were great. The group doing the billing are the ones this review is aimed at and the girl that answers the customer service line has quite the attitude as well. read more
