I want you to close your eyes for a minute. Try to imagine the very best Kroger experience you've ever had. Can you picture it? This ain't it. This is a mid-range Kroger in a mid-range area with mid-range selection and a fairly recent upgrade that improved the facade but didn't really improve the overall shopping experience. The food selection? Average. Service? It depends on the day. Ambiance? Do you have to ask? Seriously. While this Kroger has had occasional issues with crime in the area, I've never felt unsafe here and I've never really had that kind of an experience at all around here. This Old Northside location is definitely a little hit-and-miss, however, the parking lot is well-kept (with appropriate accessible parking) and generally I think everything goes as it should here. This Kroger is quite a bit smaller than most of the newer Kroger locations, however, it's solid for what it is - a neighborhood Kroger and an easy quick stop if you're going to or from the downtown area. This will never be my go-to Kroger spot, but when I'm in a pinch I can usually find what I need and will generally experience decent hospitality along the way. There's also no doubt at all that this location has improved dramatically from a few years ago. So, if you had a bad experience ten years ago it might be worth a second chance. This may not be the best Kroger experience you've ever had, but it's a decent enough alternative for those in need. read more

Here you can see Kroger trying to fool customers in to thinking they are buying local then in fact the produce is from Mexico. They say they pledge to dedicate more space on their shelves for local produce and products, yet they just lie about it. This is not just a problem with this Kroger but all Krogers. read more

It's truly hard to believe this store hasn't been torn down and replaced with a new one. It's tiny, dirty, and has such a small selection compared to any other Kroger. When they converted it to all self- check out, that was a big sign that Kroger has completely given up on this location. Even with that change, I have never been there when more than four self check out counters are even open. Self check out line frequently stretches all the way to the back of the store. Terrible layout, doesn't flow well at all. I literally felt like I was in a corn maze. Very little organic produce. Everything I ended up purchasing was not organic because it wasn't available. Everywhere you turn there is a camera in your face recording you, to which I do not consent. I understand cameras up high to oversee the store but screens in my face with a blinking light is overkill. I was very uncomfortable with my experience. I speed-shopped just so I could quickly get out of there. If I didn't get it this trip I'll get it at my usual stores. Food severely overpriced. The price I paid here, I could have had more groceries elsewhere (and that's saying a lot in this day and age). There was only self checkout available and seeing that Kroger will not be sending me a paycheck, I don't feel I should have to work for them and scan and bag my own groceries. This is by far the worst grocery store in history. There were literally 50 groups of people being jammed into the self service checkout and not one manned cash register was open. Placed an order with no issues. However, when delivered it was missing items and was charged twice the amount given. Their excuse bc the sale changed. So you can take my money with my order on one day and the next day you charge double bc the add changed. Not my issue the day you place the order is the day you go by on prices. Over 30 min on the phone wasting time to be told its a me problem and I can not return anything! Who does that I mean when you go in and purchase you can return but not on delivery when it wasn't your mistake to begin with. This is disgusting to do to ppl. Wow is this place tiny. On top of the size the employees had a lot of product needing to go out which made it worse. Not a lot of helping floating around like your typical Kroger either. I bought a lot of produce and there were no produce bags. On the way out, the carts will LOCK if you go too far! Thats a huge inconvenience for those with children or a lot of food. read more

I am at this store so much that there should be a shopping cart with my name on it. I will say that my frequent visits are only because of its extremely convenient location (about 5 minutes each way from where I currently live). This Kroger has just been remodeled but even now, it is crammed and lacking in many areas. There is no deli, fresh fish, or fresh bread. The aisles are difficult to navigate especially near the Coinstar which is terribly located in a high traffic corner. Normally, no matter which day or time I walk in there, they are stocking the shelves and it makes it even more difficult to move shopping carts around. Their produce is fresh, but pretty expensive. The meat section is ok, but don't be expecting a unique cut or even short ribs to be there. The lines to check out are often long; most of the time it is due to customers fiddling around to find a different method of payment or deciding which item to remove from their total in order to reach their budget. So when you finally make it up to the register, they usually seem frustrated or stressed out because they have to deal with drama with almost every person in line. Bottom line is, I shop here consistently. I get what I need and try to leave in an efficient matter. Some days are better than others, but this store still has a lot to improve on. read more

People in the nearby neighborhood have called this the "Ghetto Kroger" since I've known about it (this was evidently in contrast to the former Kroger on 10th--now a school supply place, near Woodruff-- that was known as the "Fellini Kroger"). There is nothing to fear, however. I routinely find great deals on some kind of produce -like the regular little square packs of raspberries you'd normally pay $3+ for on special for $1 each. True, it's not all shiny and new, but if you need to grab something quick and on the usual, you'll probably be ok here. They also sell lottery tickets--I've seen lots of activity around that activity here. They have a red box dvd rental thing outside and staff is friendly. read more

This store isn't the best in the region, but it definitely bridges the gap in the neighborhood. If I've got to do some serious shopping, but don't have the time to leave the general downtown area, I'll usually go here. I have to be prepped and ready, or else I'll get annoyed with some of the store's shortcomings. I appreciate that there is usually plenty of parking, unless you're coming in right after work (5-7pm) or on Friday evenings. Then, be prepared for waiting...at the checkout, at the U-Scan, in the freezer area because the checkout line is running through there. You get the idea. The store has improved immensely in the past year or so. It really does help meet the needs of the community, but the building is just really small and can't expand much more unless they actually expand the building. Patronize this store. This Kroger serves downtown, near-north, and near-east. This makes for a somewhat odd assortment of both shoppers and food products, but I can't say that I mind. Organic and/or vegetarian stuff? They've got it (and way more than Marsh-Malia's on Mass). Pig's feet, chittlins, gizzards, smoked turkey legs? Check, times four. There's a red box out front too. This place isn't as fancy as the ones in the suburbs, but "Kroghetto" has become a bit of a misnomer at this point...more of an affectionate nick-name than something that actually rings true. I shop here all the time, now that I live 4 blocks away, and I've never had anything but a positive experience with the employees. The cashiers have been friendly and conversational with me, and once when I needed to buy broccoli, a stocker actually JOGGED back to get some for me...there was no more in the produce section. Hopefully this store gets a parking-lot makeover soon. My only real complaint are the GINORMOUS pot holes. read more

Frankly, I typically hate grocery shopping. It's an expensive and time-consuming chore. I'd say, more often than not, I'm one of those "disgruntled shoppers." I find most other customers irritating, and I take it as a personal affront if a store is out of an item I'd like to purchase. Certain stores bother me more than others, and the East 16th Street Kroger is one of them. I want you to picture a grocery store, one with a (nearly) full inventory, located directly outside the downtown area of a city with a metropolitan area of two million people. To me, that sounds like a big, popular place. While popular indeed, the East 16th Street Kroger is anything but large. While the store carries most grocery items one would want, it lacks certain types of inventory that other stores have - like a deli or pharmacy. Shopping here is like navigating your way through a trash compactor. The isles are crammed full of merchandise, other customers, and large shopping carts; the lines are long, often causing them to further gridlock the isles. The staff is usually friendly, but are difficult to find in the pell-mell maze that this store is. Let's talk about the parking lot. It is an atrocious mess, and it makes the actual store look as if it functions like a Swiss watch. The parking lot is minuscule. It only has half the parking spaces it needs, and the driving lanes are so narrow that backing out is hazardous. The situation is made worse by customers who are too lazy to walk five extra paces to properly deposit their carts. Pro-tip: Bring a can opener if you plan to park here - your car will be metal-on-metal with other cars. Avoid the East 16th Kroger at all costs. You've been warned. read more

I've lived down the street from this Kroger for a little over six years and it has drastically improved over the years. They recently renovated the facade and interior, which was extremely needed. The food selection has changed quite a bit to cater towards changing demographics in the surrounding neighborhood. Some of the challenges for this site is simply because it is a smaller store. They do not have a bakery or deli counter so if you are in need of either better to go to the Michigan St location. They have tried to accommodate the needs from a bakery standpoint by having some cakes and cupcakes in the freezer area that come from a bakery. Another challenge is simply from a setup standpoint at the checkouts. They redesigned the self check area and in my opinion created a bottleneck in that area because the line has to go up through one of the freezer aisles otherwise it blocks traffic to the other registers. No matter what I'm glad to have a store in walking distance although I mainly use it for quick trips and not for the bulk of my shopping. It's decent enough, but expect all the bells and whistles of a regular store. read more

I have unfortunately filed two complaints against this store. I was at the SCO machines when an elderly gentleman who appeared to possibly have vision problems asked me for help understanding how to utilize the machine. The girl working SCO looked busy, I didn't mind. I help him until we get to his bottle of wine, when I told him they would need to check his ID/swipe their badge as it is alcohol. He's very polite and understands, but there are people EVERYWHERE and his machine was not blinking to get an employees attention - which if you've been in this store, getting someone's attention is like trying to get the best lawn spot at a concert. I walk over to a female employee who is standing behind the SCO employee just talking (clearly not busy), and ask her if she wouldn't mind helping the older gentleman. She literally doesn't even acknowledge me with eye contact, she looks straight ahead and raised her brows as if she were stunned I would ask her for such a thing. I say, "oh you aren't working the SCO's?" She again, looks straight ahead purposely not acknowledging me and shakes her head slowly saying no, and goes back to staring at the other employees head. As there are people WAITING for help, an elderly man I helped for them WAITING for help. The behavior of these employees is absolutely astounding. I have never once had a pleasant experience here but it is the closest Kroger to me so I continue giving it chances. Kroger is normally a great company but this particular location is an embarrassment for the company. I've watched employees comb their hair, stand around as there was a spill and broken glass in the SCO area, wrestle with one another while clearly not working, and literally even refuse to acknowledge me on not just this occasion, as a paying customer when I had a question or needed help. At this point I believe that was the final straw. I'll take my business elsewhere from now on and be sure to share my experience with others. read more

I'm a regular here and I've never been disappointed with the service or experience. I usually see the same workers here and have had many nice interactions with the people at check out. The prices here are also great. I got a Kroger card and during a 70$ grocery trip I will save around 6$ each time. Also, for many of the main brands there will usually be a Kroger brand near by it that is 30-50% cheaper. All of the aisles are easy to navigate through and now it only takes me 30-40 minutes to find everything I need to last me the week. Overall good experience here. It is a bit dimly lit and makes it feel a bit gloomy, but the people and savings will keep me coming back. read more

This grocery store has change immensely over the years. Grocery shopping is really not a hobby of mine. I don't enjoy the expense, the time consumption and dealing with people in the way, but we all have to do it. This store used to be a lot smaller and kind of cramped. Unfortunately it still is, but the way they have it laid out is a little better than what it used to be. The building used to be ran down, but they have really put in a lot of work to up their game. I think the fact that it's an older store and of a smaller size, there's not much they can do to totally change the layout, but that is one thing you will have to deal with. It's weird how all of the refrigerated items literally go along the whole perimeter of the store and then the frozen items are literally smack dab in the middle. I think the employees here are generally friendly. I have never had a bad experience of dealing with any of them. If you shop right and look for the deals and pull out that handy dandy Kroger keychain or card, you can really save beaucoup bucks here. One downfall that they have is that this location does not have a specialized deli and bakery area. I think if this were added to the store, it would really set this one up for the greater good. Once again though, I understand that it's probably due to their small size. Over the years, I kept thinking what on earth can they possibly be remodeling now. However, I see now where all the hard work has taken them. I think it's a great grocery store to get all of your basic needs. read more

I write this review having experienced many, many Krogers in my lifetime. This is one of those "don't judge a book by its covers" types of grocery stores. You might think that is hasn't had an update in centuries, but that's quite the opposite. As most Krogers updated throughout the area the past few months, so did this one, adding in the grocery type sections and their assigned aisles, along with new labeling in different areas, showing their natural and organic products. I frequent this Kroger as it's closer to my apartment and much more affordable than other grocers in the downtown area. The parking lot, as many mentioned, can be a bit tricky, but at least it has the parking lot! I like that they have a semi-large produce selection. Things to note: - I recently called to have balloons filled with helium. I was told on the phone that they had helium and could fill up for $0.25 / balloon - HELLA cheap. I got there shortly after the phone call, and they told me that they couldn't fill them up cause they didn't have enough helium. I was a bit bummed cause I was running behind, but they did throw in a $5 gift card for the inconvenience - great service! - They don't have liquor, at least not from what I've seen. - They have everything, but not in vast quantities like many other Krogers. - They don't have the Kroger "we'll bag and get your groceries ahead of time" service like many others in the area. - The service has been very friendly since I've shopped there. - There's a Red Box outside (if people still use those). read more

Kro-ghetto, I have lived next to you off and on for the last 10 years! You've been a fixture in my life, my eyes swell to see how you've really moved up in the world. You used to be a place to get Orange Drink. Now you have Simply Orange Juice. I always smile when I see the pigs feet and pickled eggs on the shelf, they are such a part of you that it'd be a shame to see them go in lieu of fancier things like organic olives or sugared ginger. And what you've done with your staff! Just two years ago I was sure all of the cashier hated their jobs and hated me for being there. I was pretty sure their eyes were going to pop right out of their heads and pummel me to death with their squishy wrath. Now they sometimes even say hi or low and behold I might get a smile, though I understand it's hard to smile when you have to walk to the cigarette safe every 2 minutes and search out that one certain box. A box who's description the previous patron managed to cough out to you in a reasonable facsimile of the colors and lettering that actually appear on it. Oh, the children standing in your isles fingering fireworks and shrieking 'DYNOMITE! DYNAMITE!", as their parents ignore them perusing your frozen vegetable selection. (PS the microwavable 2 serving boxes are very convenient for small families or one person with a dog). They make me happy... those children... Your Turkey Hill and 'Signature' ice creams are alone worth the trip, a 2 block walk from my current house. And if I ever really make the wife mad you're in stomping distance for either of us. If you could stay open a bit later that would be very convenient. We should probably get together and chat sometime about that one lane entrance and exit on 16th street, I'm not sure quite what you were thinking... but it needs some attention. This is my go-to grocery as a Chatham Arch resident. It's not fancy but it has the basics and the staff is generally pretty great. I don't understand the lack of investment in this store. The surrounding area is really nice and I bet a lot of the people in the area travel pretty far for a nicer grocery store. read more

I'm not a fan of this Kroger, as there are nicer in the city for sure - but it could be a lot worse! The produce selection is lacking and the parking lot has its issues for sure. There's an extremely limited selection of organics and yogurt/dairy products. There is a wide selection of random pig parts which is kind of nice when you don't want to go to Saraga and while the selection is small it really caters to the patrons. I also appreciate that I can run in and grab what I need for the few things I might be out of at home. It's also MUCH cheaper than the Marsh/O'Malias downtown! read more

I've lived downtown for a few months now, and it's still a toss-up for me and the "Kroghetto". As earlier stated by Yelpers, I really only go there when I have to (and it's still light outside). I once went after 9PM and kind of felt creeped out but unfortunately it was the closest place open. The employees are nice, the food selection & store layouts are ok, but both exterior AND interior desperately NEED a facelift, especially with the nice new apartments next door. I visit this Kroger often due to it's proximity to my workplace, but I would not otherwise choose to stop by here. Let's start with the difficulty of navigating their parking lot. It is often full of abandoned shopping carts that take up multiple spaces. This is partly (largely) the fault of rude patrons that are too lazy to put their carts away, and partly due to the fact that I have never seen an employee gather the carts. If you can make it past the parking lot, you're doing well. This store is smaller than a lot of other Krogers, but is well stocked. It is rarely out of items, and has always had what I wanted/needed. Their size doesn't seem to really limit their selection, which I am happy about. Staff is somewhat friendly, and I have never had a bad experience while checking out. It just gets so crowded in here, often after 5pm and people stop by after work, that there aren't enough cashiers or people available to help you find items. Adding more staff would really help this location. read more

I went to use the u scan, and had to wait for the cashier to come clear my screen. She was standing at her kiosk on her phone. Then the machines didn't have cash to give back. She went to get money from customer service so I moved to another one. She then told me I wasn't allowed to get the amount I was requesting. The kiosk gives you the option to pick other. Then she went to proceeded to other workers that work there at the kiosk didn't have any money. She was very unfriendly and customer service was very horrible. This is very sad the fact that this is the only grocery store that's close by, but I'm fine with driving further away to another store have better customer service . You never see employees smiling, or even just say hello to you. read more

I thought to myself as I entered this Kroger, "Is there a bus stop right outside of this place and these are people waiting for a bus or are they just loitering?" Well, I'm still not sure. :/ Well, the location is great and I didn't see as many potholes in the parking lot that previous yelpers mentioned. But, you'd think Kroger, as this huge grocery chain located all around the continental U.S., would put some money into revamping this poor dilapidated building. Overall, I would maybe come here to get essentials that I have forgotten on my usual runs to the grocery store as it does carry the staples, but this probably won't be my go-to grocery store. read more

You know the old saying, "Any port in a storm"? That's about how I feel about this store. Compared to other Krogers I've been to, such as the one down in Greenwood where my brother lives, this one is pretty minimal in terms of selection. It can actually be kind of funny, in a way. They had a sign advertising a big sale on "wines and liquors"...but they don't have any liquors! They do have bloody mary and margarita mixes...but they don't have anything to mix them with! They have a reasonable enough selection of beers and wines for their size, I suppose; if I had to, I expect I could find something drinkable there. They don't have many housewares, either. Certainly no dishpans. They do at least have enough ethnic foods to have Sriracha available, which is something I guess. And they have all the basic staple foods and supplies that you can find at such a store. Their prices aren't the best but aren't the worst either. The most you can say about it is that it isn't really a HORRIBLE place, but it doesn't have enough to recommend it that you would go out of your way to shop there, either. In all honesty, if it weren't that this is the only grocery store close enough that I can walk there and back with my folding cart for hauling groceries home, I probably wouldn't find much reason to shop here. But being without a car...well, as I said, any port in a storm. read more

This specific Kroger is small, but it has things you need on the go. It's not the place to go for your grocery shopping, more of a place to drop in and grab that forgotten item. The staff is always nice. The downside, they never get Kroger cards, the cashier said that they keep putting in requests. Though this may be the only large scale grocery in the downtown area (besides Marsh, which I would consider more of an upscale grocery), it definitely is a place I would try to avoid if it all possible. A lot of homeless people hanging around, the cars are all over the parking lot....just feels a bit dirty in my opinion. Only reason why I gave it 2 stars? They are in a rather difficult retail position of having to meet the demands of a wide economic spectrum of shoppers for whom this is the closest store; wealthy, blue-collar and the less fortunate. This store is small, with a very limited stock but that is not the worst of it.. Other people have called this location Kroghetto and stated that they believe that Black people get preferential treatment... I had been in and out for several small trips with no real issues save the busy/dirty lot and the occasional beggar outside. Today on Easter, I stopped there needing ONE item for our dinner and also grabbed a few extra items. They questioned my printed coupons from smartsource.com and then they wasted almost five minutes of my time to come and tell me they would "try to scan one to see if it worked but that they could only use ONE like coupon as the coupon states one per purchase"... I was already annoyed but pointed out this meant per item not per shopping trip. They then tried to pretend that they have a different coupon policy than the corporate one that applies to Super Krogers. i told them to take the entire order and deal with it themselves and the MGR on duty said "You be safe" which I think we can all take as a veiled threat. I will NEVER, under any circumstances stop or shop here again. I am A Minister and do not appreciate being treated like I am trying to scam someone for using a few coupons. I am also an Army war vet who grew up in Detroit and has lived in NYC and Boston and have never in my life imagined that an employee of a store I shop at might make any sort of threat against my person. read more

Cashier Grace is god awful. Besides just being unpleasant, she didn't double bag my chicken, so I got home to chicken juice all over everything, put my hotdog buns at the bottom of a bag, so I came home to completely smushed buns, and literally threw a tomato into a bag that didn't have anything else in it yet, so it hit the counter and I came home to tomato guts all my groceries.
