I have been here a few times, and they do not disappoint. From their sandwiches to their desserts it is all filling and made fresh. A Swedish Bakery in Anoka might make you assume a place steeped in third-generation nostalgia with baked goods that all go "squish" when poked. No assumption could be more wrong in this case. Strib called them a "best kept secret" and they wear the moniker with pride. And frankly, they back it up with some excellent baking. This is a European bakery. Things that should go "squish" (Cardamom Bread) do. Things that should be rustic and heavy of crust - are. (Bread.) Things that should be pretty as a picture, fragrant and filled with fresh butter - are. (Lingonberry cupcakes. Lavender cookies. Pastries.) I got two fragrant and fantastic items - doughy, heavily spiced, sweet and perfect cardamom bread (pretty decent at 4.99) and an amazing Lavender cookie - basically one of the best pieces of shortbread you've ever had perfumed with lavender, liberally. (A buck.) Now - would I drive out here ALLL the way from the other end of the universe if I were fiending for anything other than Cardamom bread, which is incredibly good here? Honest answer, probably not, but consider this very much on even footing with Baker's Wife, Margo, even Salty Tart or Turtle when it comes to the lavender cookie. I got talked into a loaf of sourdough when I was picking up a bunch of goodies. It was great. I picked up an artisan loaf from Target for convenience sake this week and Krown's is way better. I got a lavender cookie and it was to die for. Very crumbly, delicate, and so tasty. A few of the desserts are pretty meh, like the lingonberry bar, but others are really good! I am not one to pursue bakeries, but I have kids that love sweets. I thought I would stop and pick up dessert after picking up dinner as a treat. I chose a chocolate, caramel sea salt éclair...wow. Amazing. I shared this with my 10 year old whom gave me back her half. Yay! Why did she give it back? Because we also were supposed to share a Beehive Tosca filled with Bavarian cream. Tons of it. I will start with the good. The staff here are wonderful. The Swedish Limpa bread and Cardamon bread are great. I would not return though unless you want to go out of your way to get these two breads. I then got 4 pastries: Love note-way too much pastry. Loved the custard filling but if you are going to go to the trouble of making your own raspberry filling-strain out the seeds Winter roll-OMG the spice balance was all wrong-too much cinnamon and cloves...you need nutmeg, cardamon, a touch of cinnamon and a hint of cloves Lemon Mustache-Again so much pastry but only a dazzle of lemon-I could hardly taste the lemon Orange Twist-this one had the pastry amount right. One end of the pastry was rich with orange flavor but the opposite end had none-inconsistency. It seemed they used 1 white sweet bread recipe for the pastries and it was okay, but not my favorite esp. if they are going to be inconsistent with how they use it. For the cost and inconsistencies, I would not return. read more

This is perhaps one of my favorite places in the world. I grew up in Anoka and when my parents told me about a new Swedish bakery in this old strip mall next to the DMV and the cemetery on Main Street in Anoka I was skeptical. How pleasantly surprised I was to find one of THE best and most authentic European bakeries that I have found in the the state. And it's Scandinavian, too. Everything here is wonderful their breads look divine and every pastry I have ever had here has been phenomenal. All the ingredients or natural and organic. They like to liberally use Scandinavian flavors like cardamom and lingonberry in their pastries. I love the seasonal pastries they come out with for holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day (homemade truffles!!). Around the Scandinavian Christmas holiday season (St. Lucia's) they had their own Saffron buns traditional for the holiday and saffron cardamom biscotti! Definitely remember them for special holidays and occasions! They have a fair number of European imports from Scandinavia, Germany, Austria and the British Isles to take a look at. The owners are from Sweden and very friendly, they can even speak some German or Swedish if you want to practice your language skills! You can find their lunch specials and pastries at the Co-op in downtown Anoka, too. Hope this place stays open for a long time! read more

So I dropped by today bc I was en route to picking up a child from summer activities, but realized I was famished- Just saw the sign and thought I would grab a sandwich, which by the way was delicious- fresh sesame seed bread w turkey and cheese and crisp lettuce, mmm, oh, and slices of sweet yellow bell pepper, mmmm But items behind the other glass beckoned-- For what to my beholden eyes did I see? An amazing selection of pastries, not exactly a dollar a piece, a bit more, yet with names from another world, and flavors to boot. I love baked goods and my daughter just whipped up a batch of darned good cream puffs the other day, but by golly, I gobbled up the orange twist in the car, totally, right after yesterday I had vowed to start a 21-day fix diet( of about 1 cup carb per day). Was it ever worth it!!! What a way to celebrate the start of my diet so that I can also end it w another heavenly blessed pastry... You must come to this place. It is THE ABsOLUTE BEST bakery I have ever met in my life!!! Come and bring yourself to this little plaza by the drivers licensing center in Anoka and thank your lucky stars that a place like this exists this side of heaven. What an awesome find was this little shop! Their panini sandwiches were delicious. Then we tried Three of the baked treat options because we couldn't narrow it down. The pastry called beehive that was the best of all, though each one was delicious. What I love most about this place is that Everything is from scratch - even the Bavarian cream. And many of the ingredients they use are organic, which isn't touted or advertised (that we saw) but we found out by asking lots of questions about all of the bakery options. I stumbled upon this place while killing time before a business meeting. I ordered a coffee and a pastry, forget which, but it had cardamom and Apple spice. It was excellent. I've never tasted anything like that in the Twin Cities, where it has more of the bread taste and a slight sweet flavor, rather than the sugar bomb you get at many bakeries. You can tell they care about what they are doing here, and the breads and everything in the display booth looked incredible. read more

Swedish Crown is a gem, I believe it may just be one of the best bakeries in the metro and I consider myself lucky to have it as my local bakery - i.e. it's my Saturday morning guilty pleasure ! I guess it is time for me to spread the word, because I believe that other Yelpers in the area deserve to check it out. The shop is tucked into a small strip mall right off Hwy 10 Southbound on Main Street, so it can be easy to miss. Everything I have tried, and I have to admit I have tried quite a few, were excellent. They use organic ingredients and you can appreciate the lack of preservatives. A few of my favorites, their custard filled items-- you can tell the custard is homemade YEAH . Please don't miss their lavender sugar cookies, they melt in your mouth. I also love their fresh baked bread, they make several varieties daily. I have tried their Dill Bread - and thought I was eating some of my mom's homemade bread. I just bought myself a loaf of their sourdough bread with garlic, and just snuck a slice - another winner, crusty outside and soft inside, the garlic is great, but does not overwhelm the flavor of the bread. They also have a small charming seating area so you can enjoy your treat right there. Finally, I must say that the owners and staff are very friendly, they patiently answer my questions and provide suggestions. So the next time you are driving through Anoka, check them out ! read more
