Well damn, I forgot to check in! Nevertheless, we had dinner at Krung Thep Thai Cuisine on Saturday, December 6th at 5:30. We were the only folks in the place when we arrived. The place is small and I'm sure it gets busy. It was picking up as we were finishing up. I definitely recommend making a reservation. You will need to call to make them. Our server was very sweet. We hadn't seen our friend in Chicago in a while and we spent more time catching up than we did looking at the menu. She gave us our space and didn't rush us. Once we settled in, we were ready for some delicious food and were not disappointed. We started with Crab Rangoon - Crab meat, cream cheese and celery in a crispy wanton served with sweet and sour sauce. These are definitely made in house and delicious. I wasn't thrilled with the presentation, but it didn't negatively impact the wonderful flavor of the tasty and delicately crispy puffs. We also ordered Shumai - Steamed shrimp and pork dumplings served with. special intense medium spicy soy sauce. These immediate flavor was slightly fishy, but the pork flavor quickly mellowed the taste of the shrimp and the result was wonderful. The sauce was also delicious. I'd order these again. I had Massamun Curry with Tofu and steamed brown rice. It was wonderfully flavorful and I highly recommend the brown rice. Mark had Pad Thai with Chicken. He said it was good, but not the best he's ever had. David had Udon Pad Khee Mao Shrimps - stir-fried, thick wheat four noodles with shrimps, carrot bell pepper, tomato, green bean, baby carn, basil, hot chilli pepper. The shrimp were a good size and the meal looked beautiful. He thought it was great. We opted out of dessert. We kinda stumbled on this restaurant on a walk-by. It looks like a hole in the wall from outside, but Mark loves Thai so I looked it up on Yelp. The reviews made it clear that Krung Thep was more than what it appeared. This place is so good and it's been a while I have been here but since my friend who is Thai used to take me the have like a secret Thai menu she would order from. But loved their Thai tea and Panang curry which was filled with so many flavors. The papaya salad was my favorite and it is quite spicy but something I couldn't handle. Consistently, they've done better on their noodles because the curries could take a bit more flavoring, especially the green curry. My all time favorite Thai food, papaya salad, was definitely the best dish. The sauce was well balanced with the spice and vinegary flavors. Everything was well marinated and flavorful. We ordered lots of food and the food was brought out as soon as it was made so we had a steady flow of hot food coming out. Staff was so sweet and accommodating and always checked in on us. I can't bring myself to give a full 5 star, though. The restaurant is pretty cramped and we sat in the back where the door to the kitchen was. The bench seating on the wall leaned forward so I was concerned about it breaking at any point. It is a very nice Thai restaurant! The place is small, basic but pretty decorated inside. All the furniture is in very good condition, and every time I go there, the entire place is very clean. The staff is always sweet and friendly, and the service is consistently fast even when the place is busy. The restaurant's menu is extensive and includes all the major Thai dishes. I have tried multiple meals, but my absolute favorites are the Cucumber Salad, Crab Rangoon, Chicken Satay, Chicken Pad Thai, and Pad Khee Mao (which I also like with chicken). Plus, I often order Thai Iced Tea, which is very delicious here. The prices on the menu are reasonable. My final bill is always around $25 for one appetizer, one main meal, and a drink. Portions are big and filling. Sometimes I am completely full just by ordering one main meal like Pad Thai. I have never had any issues with the food at this place. The only negative thing I can mention is the restaurant's size. It is so small that the tables are very close to each other, making it impossible to have a private romantic conversation if the place is busy; it gets super noisy when the restaurant is crowded. Also, because of how tiny everything is, you have to be careful walking around the restaurant, as there is a high chance of bumping into waiters who move around very fast serving the customers. Additionally, the restroom needs to be remodeled as it is outdated. The restaurant's location is great; it is right in the heart of Boystown, Chicago. Wow. I mean, what can I say. This place was amazing. Everything I ordered was good. I had the pad kana moo krob, Bangkok wrap, and the chicken pad woon sen. The kana moo krob is amazing--roast pork belly sautéed with Chinese broccoli in a savory oyster sauce. It's served with rice, which is 100% necessary. The Bangkok wrap is lettuce cups filled with vermicelli noodles, basil, and crispy fried mackerel. These were pretty good, but I would probably not order them again. The chicken pad woon sen (stir fried glass noodle) was also very tasty. The glass noodles absorb the sauce and have a pleasant delicate yet chewy texture. One thing I do want to mention, is that I ordered to-go, which I did through the Yelp app. The in-app timing of the order was not accurate--actually, when I called the restaurant, the order was already ready, even though the app said it would take an additional 20 minutes. Takeaway: Best Thai restaurant in Chicago at an incredibly reasonable price (and free BYOB!) Context: Two of my international Thai friends brought me here for dinner claiming it was an incredible and authentic restaurant - claiming it would be a "good restaurant in Bangkok". They ordered family style for a group of ~8 of us to share. I've eaten a lot of Thai food (although likely from mostly Americanized spots) in my life and this is definitely one of the best. What I Got: Papaya Salad (9/10) Best papaya salad I've had in my life. We got it with salted eggs, which created a perfect complement to the perfectly balanced papaya salad. The papaya was crispy, cold and refreshing - all of which was further accentuated by the tomatoes, green beans, & other various spices. The shrimp and garlic definitely came through to create an overall savory experience (although my friends commented that it was still on the sweeter end of "authentic" papaya salad). Awesome dish. Laab Moo (9.5/10) Ground pork "salad" - which basically consisted of 90% ground pork tossed with onions, lime, mint and I'm sure a million spices I couldn't identify. Once again, the best laab (larb?) I've ever had. A great aromatic blend of sour and spicy that I couldn't get enough of. I was basically licking the plate at the end. It was definitely spicy - so watch out here! Liver Larb (7.5/10) Basically the same as above, but with liver instead of ground pork. I like liver around 2 points less than ground pork I guess so there you go. Moo Ping (8/10) Grilled BBQ pork with a tamarind paste sauce. They do a great job here and the pork is cooked near-perfectly, but you can ultimately probably imagine exactly what this tastes like if you've had grilled pork skewers before. Definitely good and the sauce is a winner that I prefer over the peanut sauce that most Thai places here would serve, but nothing revolutionary. Crab Fried Rice (8/10) This is a solid crab fried rice. In a worse meal, this might be a 7/10, but I felt like it didn't stand out too much and didn't really need to. It went perfectly with the million other brilliant, aggressive flavors that came with the other dishes while still being a solid dish in its own right. This was a highlight with my Thai friends - I'd trust them over me! Kra Proa Moo Krob (8/10) (Very) Crispy pork belly tossed with basil, green beans, mushrooms, bell peppers, and more in a savory and spicy sauce. I really enjoyed this dish, but I'm a sucker for pork belly, especially if it's crispy and on the thicker end. I thought it was great, but didn't stand out too much amongst all the other winners here and didn't get a ton of play at the table actually. Khao Soy (9.5/10) Wow! Egg noodle soup in a thick, yellow curry-based broth topped with crispy noodles and an absolutely perfect chicken drumstick. This thing was immaculate - the egg noodles had the perfect amount of bite to them and didn't really get soggy as the meal went on. The soup was more delicate than I expected - I thought it'd be an overpowering yellow curry-like flavor, but it was actually relative subtle and it was just the right amount of salty / savory. The highlight is the fall-off-the-bone-tender drumstick. After the noodles were done you can bet I went to town on the drumstick - absolutely delicious. Boat Noodles (9.5/10) Unfortunately couldn't get a picture here, but this was probably the highlight of the meal for me. Thin rice noodles in a thick brown (?) broth. I'm not completely sure what's in the broth (other than blood), but it was a salty, savory masterpiece . I unfortunately can't really find the language to truly describe what I loved about this - but I guess it reminded me of the best meaty noodle soups (e.g., Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, pho, etc.) I've had with its multiple layers of savory complexity. Coconut Thai Pudding (9/10) Exactly what it sounds like - served (very) hot. It looks very unassuming and is pure white from the outside. Loved ending the meal on a warm dessert - not too sweet, a soft eggy-like texture, and very strong coconut flavor. Would definitely get this again. read more
