Came here on Monday since the weather finally decided to warm up, and this was one of the best decisions. The food is delicious, the staff friendly, and the front windows open up for a gentle breeze. I ordered the Peeyowtini (sp?) and my husband tried their mango mojito. Mine was fruity delicious and tasted a lot like a mai tai, though it uses a common Philipino fruit, Calamansi, instead of any citrus. The mango mojito was wonderful, according to my husband. We ordered a few appetizers and an entree to share, and took our time. The small plate pork ribs adobo were so tender and well-seasoned. I'm normally not a fan of adobo but these were so succulent and flavorful, I'd definitely get them again next time. We also tried the tuna ceviche, one of the specials (these are listed on a chalkboard by the entrance). The ceviche itself was amazing. The tortilla chips it came with were crispy and perfectly fried--I just wish there were more of them. Finally we had the Pancit, a traditional Philipino dish. Again, this was wonderfully seasoned and had a great balance between the starch, vegetables, and sauce. Definitely bookmarking this place for next time! read more

Great owner, friendly staff and a crowd that will help you forget your problems. Sorry Chicago but this spot belong in NYC. The selection of alcohol in the full bar is phenomenal. The cocktails are a must, a true Filipino American cocktail drink that will make you want to keep having more! There is no flavor to the food and the service is extremely slow. We were seated at the corner and no one gave us any attention and the service was extremely slow. When we were finally excited that the food arrived, we were disappointed at the taste. The truffle fries have little to no truffle taste to it and the noodles looked like we ordered stir fry with a little amount of noodles. Was so excited when I discovered there was a Filipino restaurant in Lakeview, and it doesn't disappoint! We came for Sunday brunch and ordered the "skinny" egg rolls ($5) as an appetizer, and the bangsilog ($14) and tocilog ($11) as our entrees. In addition to the Filipino options on the menu, they also had your typical American breakfast. However if you're at a Filipino restaurant, definitely get the Filipino breakfast. The skinny egg rolls are really good! Never had them cooked that way, but glad they did something different with it. The entrees were equally good and made me feel at home. They both came with fried eggs, garlic rice, and sliced tomatoes, It was the perfect portion size, and our server even offered more garlic rice and tomatoes if we wanted. Our waiter was so nice and personable. I don't remember ever feeling this welcomed at a restaurant. They certainly care about their customers here while serving delicious and authentic Filipino food. The reviews are right. For the love of God, try the pork ribs adobo. They are spectacular!! My husband got the ribs and I ordered the longinisa burger. The burger was delicious, but it is a bit messy to eat due to the egg. I think the ribs were the star of the show. Also, the Filipino beer we had was delightful. Five stars for both the food and service. Convenient location very walkable from the Belmont train stop if you don't want to look for parking. I am not good at ordering drinks but the waitress made a very good recommendation after I told her what I liked. We had a party of 3 and ordered the big size ribs with other three small plates, good enough to feed three. Over the size is slightly bigger than many of the tapa places I have tried. Absolutely amazing. I live in the neighborhood and decided to try. Staff is amazing. The food is great. I am a foodie and a bit of a food snob. They have the best ribs I have ever had in my life. I don't even like ribs. The remind me of a succulent pork roast falling off the bone in a subtle marinade. Crab cakes, ceviche, skinny egg rolls and noodle dish amazing. You must try. If you want to have real, good, and cheap Filipino food in the city, save your time and money and go to Isla Pilipina in Lincoln Square, Ruby's Fast Food, or Seafood City. This menu is all over the place with stuff like guacamole to penne pasta to NY Strip Steak. In what's supposed to be a Filipino Fusion type restaurant, there weren't any dishes that really fused with Filipino cuisine. Though the restaurant was essentially empty, we were seated right behind the hostess station by the door so we kept our coats on to keep warm from the draft. They said they were expecting a large party so that's why we had to sit at a high top table. That "large party" never actually showed up. We ordered the ribs, pancit, lechon kawali, and halo-halo for dessert. The ribs were pretty tasty though my table mates complained about their fattiness and they didn't really have any hint of adobo flavor. The pancit didn't use the right noodles and we're cut much too short. Pancit noodles are used to symbolize long life and, well, life seemed pretty short. The lechon was almost 70% fat and felt like a precut, deep fried, porkchop. The halo-halo looked great asthetically, however was a disappointment to our taste buds. We didn't even finish ours which, for 3 Filipinos, is very rare. Our waiter, who seemed to be the owner, was kind and attentive. However, he was not familiar with a common Filipino drink, of which the restaurant didn't even offer, and tried to wow us by saying he could make any cocktail using calamansi juice. Though I want to support a newly opened Filipino restaurant right by my house, I just can't justify the cost and quality of Kubo and would rather travel to Isla, Ruby's, or Seafood City to get my Filipino food. read more

Definitely a must try! As a person who's gone around the world, the Philippines and its cuisine is something I fell in love with. I'm glad I came across this restaurant, while deciding where to eat. The staff is quite friendly and very attentive, it almost seems that they work as a team. We had more than one server constantly checking on us to ensure we had everything we needed. I ordered the Chicken Adobo, and my partner ordered one of their meat stews, both dishes quite delicious! There's something for everyone in their menu, and come hungry! Portions are big (see photo attached). We also tried the calamari and the ceviche, which was recommended by our server. Ceviche is quite fresh, and tasty! I've come across other restaurants that overpower their ceviches with lime, but that wasn't the case here. The ceviche is quite well balanced. Its minus one star only because of the limited menu and because this area needs something like a Cooper's more. I loved trying the calamari and the mushroom soup was very comforting. They have decent portions too. The other item that I tried was the crab cakes. It was hard for me to find something to eat that wasn't over $25 because I don't eat pork or beef. I miss the pizzas! I LOVE KUBO! I've been a regular patron of this great Filipino restaurant since it opened six years ago. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly, professional and fun to chat with. There are options of sitting at the bar, a table inside, or enjoying fresh air on the open outdoor patio when weather permits. It's my go-to restaurant before and/or after performances at Theater Wit directly across the street on Belmont Avenue. Kubo offers a diverse menu of both American and Filipino dishes. My favorite items are Adobe Ribs that melt in your mouth, Crab Cakes that are perfectly seasoned and Pacit, a traditional noodle and vegetable dish that you can add chicken, shrimp or beef to. It also has an extensive bar collection to satisfy whatever adult beverage you have a taste for. The atmosphere is upbeat and energetic. Not only have I introduced local friends to Kubo, but it's a "must" for my out-out-town visitors. After a delicious meal and theater, be sure to stop back in for a fabulous chocolate martini or their new crème brûlée for dessert. I highly recommend enjoying your next meal at Kubo. read more

The whole experience was HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING! We made this choice in advance by looking at the menu, but they must have paid a hefty price for their marketing because the menu DOES NOT describe the actual food and is NOT AT ALL worth the marked price. It is mediocre at best. The seafood balls are flavorless, rubbery, and ambiguously non-fishy. Tasted like calamari by-product. Lumpias and ribs were good but underwhelming. The price point on those were fair. We ordered the crab crusted salmon entree and were shocked at how small the servings were for a $30 plate. It was beyond simple and while the salmon was cooked well, it was a small portion with an ice cream sized scoop of garlic rice. They knew we were splitting the entree because we were seeing a show across the street. We asked for more rice and they charged us for a double side. First key of an ethnic food place, if the staff or servers or cooks do not match the food, you're in for an underwhelming experience. Our tab was over $100 for two glasses of wine, three small apps, and an entree. To top it off, we were tortured with JLO and Rihanna club mixes that were left on repeat the entire time we were there. we mentioned it. We planned a dinner celebrating my boyfriends parents' anniversary and the staff at Kubo was phenomenal. We did the Kamayan family style where you eat with your hands on banana leaves and it was such a fun and unique experience! Everything was prepared right when we arrived and they were able to accommodate my boyfriends' shellfish allergy. The designated a seat for him and he was able to partake with everyone without worrying about his allergy :) I will say, it is a bit pricy, I think it was $40 a person, but you are definitely paying for an experience. read more

Yum! We tried Kubo before a play. Service was spectacular. Food was great, although I was expecting spicier. My bad, I guess. Cocktails (martinis) were wonderful and reasonably priced. We enjoyed the covered patio, where we could watch some other tables enjoying the meal, where all the food is spread on banana leaves on the table. Will try that next time. We had the pancit and the chicken adobo. Both we enjoyed a lot.
