Folklore is a great locally owned Argentinan spot offers authentic dishes from empanadas, exstensive meat selection, pasta and seafood options. A great dim candlelight vibe this is a great romantic spot for a date. The food was delicious with great flavor and the service was great. They also have a great cocktail and wine list.

My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday and had great service, food and drinks. Jose, our server was very attentive and friendly. The place is very romantic, I highly recommend for date night. We found parking right in the front on a Wednesday evening.

We used to love Folklore a few years ago and preCOVID. However our recent experiences have been more mixed especially when it came to the steak offerings. Service is always excellent and the interior has a dark, cozy energy despite being very large. The patio is pleasant on nice days. On multiple occasions, we've received meat that was very well done and very tough despite requesting otherwise. The sweetbreads were also tough to the point of being inedible, with a lot of sinew across the cuts. Overall a great place for wine, tapas, and lounging but the core meat offerings have declined substantially in quality.

We got here and was led to the back window area where our hostess let us choose which table we wanted to be seated at. It felt a little bit more private for us to celebrate my husband's birthday dinner. I started with the beef empanada and it was really well done with the sauce. It was also very filling and probably prevented me from eating more of my main dish. This Elche steak was the star of the show for sure it was so flavorful and tender it was cooked perfectly. I loved that it came with grilled vegetables of red pepper, asparagus and mushrooms. I did order the spinach mashed potatoes additionally and everything was just the right combination, so well balanced. Plus the glass of red wine and then I had my husband's Rogel torta birthday cake, and it was such a sweet ending. Our server was fantastic and it was such a memorable evening and meal.

Having just returned from Argentina, I can honestly say this place is the real deal. From food to decor, the experience was authentic and impeccable. I loved the rustic atmosphere and the service was very attentive and fun to talk with. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed their work. Now for the food. My spinach and cheese empanada was too good! You could tell it was homemade from the delicious dough to the savory filling. I had salmon as a main course and it wad a parmesan crust - unexpected and absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and tasty, it was like eating dessert. We were so stuffed from the meal that we didn't order dessert - but plan to be back!

Massively underrated restaurant in Chicago. Warm and cozy ambience with vintage charm. Great cocktails and delicious bread. We shared empanadas for the app and thought the beef was the highlight. The Berenjena and El Filet were standouts, and steak was cooked to perfection. We were too full for dessert, but they looked amazing. Amazing service topped off a wonderful evening!

    Menu

The online menu does not match the real menu, and the pricing was about 27% more in person than on the website. Food was very good, great flavors. Service was great. Ambiance was nice, almost too dark.

Hands down: the Best Argentinian grilled meat restaurant in the city, and I've tried a few. Came in right when they opened up. We were sat immediately by a very friendly host. Loved the decor of the place, not pretentious and very cozy. Loved the fire place in the main dining area. Loved the long stick candle on the table. Our waiter was kind and gave us ample time to read the menu. We ordered a beef empanada which was huge and full of spicy delicious beef mince. The crust was flaky and buttery: really good. We then split the Parrillada Mixta (for two) and all of the meats were cooked perfectly: the Short Rib stood out for its flavor. Honestly a great overall experience here: service was friendly & prompt, the food was plentiful & delicious, and the quality of the meat was unmatched. I will definitely be back.

First time here was in 2017/2018, loved everything about it! The drinks, the food, the vibes! But man did things take a turn after 2020. We use to visit a few times a year but once Covid hit we didn't return until in 2021 and everything was different. Our return visit we were disappointed. Went back 2023, disappointed. Now in 2025 disappointed. What made me mad back in 2021 was the removal of the el solitario dish, it was steak (I forgot what cut) topped with Gorgonzola cheese and served with broccolini. It was so good!! An item we did see that stayed and is still on the menu is El filet. It's ok. Seems to be getting blander. Now drinks. The sangria here was the best sangria everrrrrr. It had wine, vanilla, cognac, and it warmed your soul. It paired so beautifully with the steak (don't come for me lol). Welp they must of gotten tired of making it that day or something cause look at the new sangria. WHY IS THERE A CHERRY AT THE BOTTOM. Why is the wine floating. Geeze. What happened????? Also it took almost 35mins to get two drinks and we arrived an hour after opening on a Thursday, not many people. We ordered a second drink once our entrees arrived and cancelled them because we were done with our entrees and just disappointed overall. At least the bread is still good....

    Unexpected amazing dinner!

A neighbor gem! We have tried Tango Sur, El Cheand this place in Chicago, and Folklore clearly stands out as the best. It is the most specious one providing my own personal space and very relaxed vibe. The server was very attentive. We got parrillada for two and berenjena en escabeche (eggplant with various herbs). Berenjena was a big surprise for us, and it was so good on its own but was better with different meat types. Meat platter was awesome; and my wife loved the blood sausage while my favorite was sweetbread. Portion was so big for both dishes, and it can definitely feed more than 2 (likely 4 for the regular eaters like my wife and me). Thoroughly enjoyed Folklore. Will definitely come again!

I've lived in the neighborhood for 30+ years, and I can't believe it took me that long to visit Folklore. I'm so mad at myself! First of all, it should be a crime for how delicious that bread basket was. Soft, perfect chew and crunch, warm-- I had to stop myself. Empanadas are all delicious. The provoleta was okay. But man oh man, this steak. I ordered the El Filet. Beautifully and perfectly cooked filet mignon with a red wine sauce... and the potatoes. Someone give me my fat pants right now. Mashed potatoes with spinach for the most buttery win. Food coma as our dessert

    Do they have Dessert?? Alfajores?

Their dessert menu is a plate of different types of cakes which they bring to your table. I don't believe I have seen alfajores.

    Is this byob?

No. Tango Sur (their sister restaurant in Lakeview) is BYOB. Folklore has a full bar and affordable bottles of wine

Does the spinach mash also include potatoes or just purely spinach?

Puréed spinach with mashed potatoes. It's amazing!

Overall the dark ambience and the service gives you the fine dining feel without having to shell the money or the effort to be at a fine dining restaurant. The food pricing is on the higher end but in terms of value for money perhaps lives a bit more on the hype and its location over everything else. I think the steak was decent and delicious but wouldn't amaze you enough to feel like you'd have to come here a second time or have this be your go to steakhouse in Chicago. I think the actual star of the show were the mushrooms, that dish was a fan favorite among our table. I also think the bacon they use in their salad was also phenomenal and delicious. Overall a nice, premium experience, but moreso as a one time treat rather than a consistent go to place.

I considered telling our waiter but he never appeared at our table to ask about how our food was. He showed up half an hour later to ask if we wanted dessert. I didn't eat my ny strip because it was so dry and my husband had a few bites. Service- as mentioned above, the server barely showed up. Also our food arrived later than everyone next to us. The couple next to us got sat down after we put in our entree order and get they received their entree before we did. No apologies or context given on the delay. Also, I know they offer half orders for certain dishes like salad for takeouts and deliveries and saw older TikTok videos that mentioned getting half portions too. We asked if they do half portions so we can try more items in the menu, we simply got a "NO" without any kindness or explanation given. It was said as if we were asking them something stupid. Ambiance- I think the bar area is nice looking, but we were sat in the basement. It was crammed, the tables were small, and because it was a small room, you can really hear other tables conversations. For casual restaurants I don't mind that type of ambiance but if we are dropping more than $300 for 2 of us, I am going to compare it to comparable places in that price range: Bavettes, Gibsons, maple and ash, swift and sons, Alston, etc. this is significantly lacking compared to all of those "nice steakhouses". Theres not even a coat check. Also our leftover was packed in a cheap black plastic bag. Once again, not matching with the price point. We are locals and were very excited to try this place not far from us, but sadly, it was a truly disappointing experience and if anyone asked me if I'd recommend this place, I would say look elsewhere.

For starters, we ordered the kimchi pork dumplings and grilled octopus, which both tasted great, but the kimchi flavoring did overpower everything. However, my experience at Perilla Steakhouse was hands down frustrating. Upon arrival, things were off to a rough start when I could barely hear the server over the music. At times, I felt like our server was rushing us through our meal based on how much less attention he gave us versus the other tables. I'm not someone who needs my glass refilled every minute either to be clear, but things did feel off with how slow our meal was paced out and the general disinterest the server had in us. For reference, we arrived early to a nearly empty restaurant that hadn't started peak dining time yet. I recognize the steakhouse is an upscale, chic take on traditional Korean dishes and I admire the chef for sharing his culture with the city. I also understand restaurants are going to be more expensive, the closer you are located in relation to downtown. Even so, in comparison to other nearby high-end restaurants, the price to portion ratio for our meal felt off. For example, our $16 dumplings included 3 dumplings on a plate. Yes, there's an argument for inflation and the cost of quality ingredients, but I argue that at this price point we shouldn't have left hungry either.

I LOVED my Filet with the green peppercorn cream sauce! It was delicious and my husband was surprised I ate so much of it. It was cooked exactly as I asked, the meat had good flavor, and the sauce was delicious and well balanced + the right consistency. Lastly, the banana and coconut dessert was a pleasant surprise. The banana flavor was fresh (not artificial) and had the right balance of coconut. It was creamy, not too sweet, and had the right balance of textures with the outer coating and the crumble underneath - if you like banana or coconut at all I'd say it's a must order! The creme brulee was just okay. My issue was the service - the table next to ours LIT ON FIRE because a menu was over the top of a candle. After burning half the menu and the fire was getting larger, our partners ran over and put it out with their napkins. They yelled and there was NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT from the staff at all - at least 2 staff saw and one waiters eyes got big for a minute and she turned away. Not even a thank you from anyone to our partners for putting it out, and they had to ask for new napkins because theirs had black char on them. We were in the middle of enjoying our appetizers and my friend was just digging into her French onion soup from our first round and the staff kept trying to take our plates away. My friend had to tell them 3 times to please leave the soup at the table, and overall made us feel very rushed. We weren't taking a long time to eat at all so felt very weird? When the entrees were dropped on the table, my friend got a steak and they kept trying to give her a butter knife. It took multiple attempts to get the correct knife. Then once we were done eating it took a while to get our plates and old glasses cleared away. Overall service timing was off and their aggressiveness in the beginning of trying to take our plates away + the lack of response to A FIRE in the restaurant was pretty alarming. While I enjoyed the food there, the service was pretty bad and I feel unsafe with the lack of response to a fire in the restaurant so I don't think we'll return.
