Was out with Wife doing errands, she mentioned a penchant for a burger. I took a quick reconnoiter on Yelp and saw Kuma's here. If you read my Yelp on the original location, you'll learn I was quite impressed with the unique qualities of the bread and circuses therein. THIS store, however, is not a funky old Chitown corner tavern, repurposed into a brilliant resto as the original is. It has the appearance and feel of a corporate outpost with NONE of the intrinsic vibe and atmosphere of the paternal iteration. It's a big room, with an enclosed "patio" that had even less charm. One of the great things about the original is the non-exclusive yet cordial service, hinting at rough trade, yet somehow I believe this is a manufactured behavior, for fun. Kind of like if Ed Debevic was a hardcore outlaw biker. (IYKYK). The servers here were kind of cheerless, and aloof. I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was yum. A Caesar was next, and that too, was pretty tasty. So I started to think, "Ok this isn't the original Kuma's, but the Schaumburg audience is going to be a bit different than the Northside Hipsters". When you're aware of circumstances, attitudes change. Wife played it safe, eschewing all the ooga-booga burgers of the menu and just going for a regular burger, ketchup, mayo, tomato, onions, no cheese please. Cooked medium. I, however, remembered seeing someone on TeeVee having a "Plague Bringer" supposedly redolent of Garlic and fiercely chilli'ed. Right up my alley! I bid the Waitron to bring it with all speed. The burgers appeared shortly. Wife noticed the tomato on her plate had an unsavory black & grey area in its innards. obviously rotten. How the expediter ever let that get out of the Kitchen, I dont know. It was sent back an returned with an excuse it was a bit of olive that got mixed up with the tomato. I immediately checked the menu to see if they OFFERED anything, anywhere with black olives, and there wasn't anything there. I asked the same of the Waitron, and got the same answer. As wife didn't put the tomato on her burger, it was shuffled to the side. Wife said the burger was nothing special, And neither was my "PlagueBringer". Most of it was buried in Tortilla Strips. Not appetizing at all. The expected Garlic onslaught was nowhere to be found, neither was the anticipated chilli pepper sting. All I could taste were the french fried onions (the same ones you find on greenie beanie casseroles during your Grandmother's Thanksgiving dinner) heaped under the top pretzel bun hood. A segregated bite found the burger patties un-seasoned and not terribly tasty (both mine and Wife's burger). What a bummer. They gave a very small discount on the burger as an apology for the offending tomato slice. We don't go into restos with a defensive attitude. We HATE sending things back, and will only take a discount or comp if the kitchen or service ABSOLUTELY shit the bed. Wife had the queasies for the rest of the day thinking other vegetations on her burger (or the burger itself) had evidence of mishandling. Fortunately, there was no food sickness. Yes, there was heavy metal music playing very loudly throughout our visit, making conversation difficult, but I knew that would prolly be the case on the way in. The whole thing was disappointing. I was hot-to-trot about the original store and how they seemed they were taking a stand against any restaurant taking itself too seriously. It wouldn't surprise me to learn the folks who financed this outpost mandated some marketing fuck to whitewash the "Heavy Metal" concept, as seen in countless corporate restos based on a charming, small joint, and having none of its original DNA. Doug Sohn was so right to never franchise "Hot Doug's", lest the accountants make a pudding of his concept and vibe as they obviously did here with Kuma's I should have known when I walked in the front door and did not see a placard with the "house rules" nearby. Tried a new spot with a heavy metal vibe, which was definitely a first for me, but I didn't mind it at all. The whole place is fully themed and it adds to the experience. Our waiter was super cool and friendly, and he suggested we try the burgers, so we went for it. We ordered the Famous Kuma, cooked medium rare, and it was delicious. The egg on top added a great touch. We also got the Strident Escape, which I believe is new, and that one was really good too. The burgers are huge -- I ended up saving half for later. The Strident Escape has a bit of a kick, but it was still really enjoyable. Fries were solid as well. My only complaint was with the drinks. The ginger ale tasted off, so I switched to a Sprite, but that ended up tasting more like tonic water. Not sure if the machine was working properly. The heavy metal is a good vibe even if it is not your genre. Conversations can be had. There is indoor and outdoor seating and you can make reservations. I ordered the Plague Bringer with an impossible burger patty. It has crushed garlic, hot sauce, pepperjack, fresh jalapeños, tortillas strips and garlic mayo! All of these ingredients were well-balanced. The fries are crispy and fresh cut. They are one of my favorite places to eat fries. There are also house chips which are amazing. The cheese curds were good but I work In Wisconsin and I'm used to getting a huge plate to share, theirs is more like a single serving but maybe it is on purpose so you can enjoy their delicious burgers. The burgers at this place are extremely extravagant, I think one of the comments here claimed it's an assault on your taste buds and I have to agree based off of what the menu looks like. i can't confirm, though, because I got the world's simplest burger ever out of fear, lol their homemade sauce is very delicious, though, and if I'm ever in the area again for work again, I would consider coming back. The burgers are huge, so it is very filling, I couldn't even finish it and I was very hungry. The surface was great and very attentive as well! The one qualm that I do have is that every single one of their burgers is on a pretzel bun, the only alternative option being a gluten-free bun. Reliably good food. If you order from DoorDash they usually do not have the burger of the month listed. Also customizations are limited on some food items I. DoorDash as well. I wanted to order the chili, but it wouldn't let me remove the cheese. Generally there is a decent amount of parking. Inside there is music, but not loud enough to need to yell to be heard. Well, turns out there is a QR code menu aka a hidden menu. I had planned to have the charity burger which at the time of my visit was to benefit a victim of (ignored) school bullying. Worthwhile indeed. And another plus for this place, that your food has that potential to give back directly to someone in need. My fiance and I were in and out within an hour and 15 mins. Service throughout our experience was great - our server was attentive however didn't hover. He also explained a new beer on tap and gave us a sample, without even asking for it! The atmosphere is definitely heavy metal everything. Music is blaring loud and songs are not clean versions. If you are bringing kids and don't want them hearing profanity, this might not be the spot for you. The burger selection is what keeps us coming back. I've basically had the entire menu and my favorites are the Metallica and Iron Maiden. I love that they use pretzel buns for their burgers, it's real goooooooooood. When I walked in I was immediately hit by a wall of noise. The restaurant was two-thirds full, when I arrived but the music was cranked I to eleven. Because of this i had trouble hearing my friend two feet away. Based on the suggestion of a fellow Yelp Elite, Sherwin C., i tried the macaroni and cheese with pulled pork. We decided to try Kuma's after seeing how great their menu items looked on their web site. Very bad idea. My wife and I ordered a W.A.S.P. hamburger, medium well, with a side of Frizzled Onions and we ordered a side of French Fries too. At home, the burger looked great, but when we cut it in half, it was obviously medium rare, and it was much thinner on one side than the other. There were NO Frizzled Onions, but there were TWO orders of French Fries. Bad enough, but that night I had diarrhea and the only thing I ate that was different from normal was their food. If they had been busy when I ordered it, I might have understood their mistakes, but they were slow at 5:21 on a Wednesday. Only two other customers at the restaurant, and four employees that I could see. That should have warned me not to take a chance. I've learned my lesson. read more

We started with cheese curds as an appetizer. My boyfriend is a vegetarian and ate the Iron Maiden burger with an Impossible patty with fries and really enjoyed it. Fun place to grab a fresh unique burger and listen to some hard core tunes! I have had this place on my list to visit for about a year on the recommendation from my sister's boyfriend whose band has a burger named after them and finally made it in to this location. Super friendly staff, and the ambiance is right up my alley with a casual super edgy vibe. We had great service from Carlos who shared his burger faves but I had to go with the Goatsnake burger since it was how I even know about this place all the way from AZ. Now as someone who can't stand the goat cheese, I flipped it out for some cheddar and the burger was still delish with the pretzel bun, corn relish and onion straws. Tons of fries on the side to boot. Sure you pay close to $20 for a burger but between the burger and fries I could have shared this with someone. All of their burgers are named after genuine bands, and they serve a variety of beers, commonly from the local region, as well as seasonal items such as the burger of the month. I wasn't bold. So, I got The Famous Kuma. It turned out to be good. The patty is juicy and covered with melted cheddar, crispy smoky bacon, fresh lettuce, tomato, red onion, fried sunny side-up egg and served on soft pretzel buns. The meal is filling. I believe the patty is underseasoned; it felt bland. The hand cut fries are warm rather than hot. The music might become overbearing over time. I appreciate this restaurant since the concept is unique and they know how to prepare gourmet burgers. It gives me confidence to try the rest of their menu. read more

My son is absolutely obsessed with burners, it is his favorite meal. We were in the area to check out Legoland for his birthday. Kuma's popped up as a nearby burger place so it was a great fit. I liked the idea of the restaurant and the rock vibes. There were a lot of different burger choices so I was pumped for lunch. It was however a terrible choice for us with two kids. Despite being on the patio the music was cranked to 10 and really loud, unnecessarily so. It was noon on a weekday, let people just talk to one another. I do want to preface that I have also been to the OG Kuma's corner and naturally, you can't help but compare the two, so I'll get that out of the way. The ambiance is not the same, the one here in Schaumburg is a more diluted and muted sister store. Not a necessarily a bad thing but if you want the real deal, you'd have to go into the city. *The only real gripe I had about sitting outside in their patio was that their music was too loud to have any meaningful conversations with your friend. This was only exacerbated when lunch was on a Tuesday afternoon with not much else going on.* Fortunately, our server was fine; not overbearing but would've been nice to have more water refills along the way. But onto the food! I ordered myself the Iron Maiden burger (med-rare) while my friend got himself Kuma's buffalo chicken Mac and cheese. I'd say I'm a fairly easy guy to please when it comes to burgers, as long as it's cooked correctly and I have my sauces. This burger was just that but I'd say the only downside is that, as a whole, it's missing more seasoning on the beef. It was a fine burger but when you have to add extra chipotle mayo for more flavor, then the patty itself is lacking in that Flavor Department. As for the fries? They weren't anything to write home about either. Although, if you were to opt for the buffalo Mac and cheese, that one was packed with much more flavor from their buffalo sauce! The chicken was nice and tender, not dry. And the cheese on the Mac was just right. I believe my friend chose the better out of us two that day.
