This is my second time here, so I like the food but it's nothing special. It's just good for a quick lunch ( 7 days a week lunch special) that isn't pricey. It's quiet, definitely a hole in the wall type of Chinese restaurants. The waiter is polite & helpful. My only complaint is that it's 86 degrees outside and they have the ac on 78 w a SMALL fan blowing - so it's fairly warm. Other than that it's good & I will return again lol read more

1st time trying this spot, running the normal lunch specials, one entree with fried or steamed rice. fried spring roll and soup. I opted for the Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, sauce was tangy, slightly sweet with ground chillis. Very tasty sauce and the veggies had great snap to them. Ordered a side of pork egg rolls, came with sweet n sour sauce, which you don't see much anymore. Very good filling, fried perfectly. Very inexpensive, will be back to try other dishes. read more

I wanted to grab a quick lunch. Ordered online from the parking lot. The order was ready in 10 minutes. The place was empty which was fine because I was taking it to go. I ordered black pepper chicken, good portion size. The chicken was good and flavored but a little dry. I might try something else next time. Eggrolls were good, hot and crispy. Shrimp fried rice was decent, small shrimp but it's ok as a side order. I have leftovers for another day. Portion sizes good for lunch. I didn't get a lunch special because I didn't want to waste the soup and it's too hot for it today. read more

I also ordered crab/ cheese puffs the elegant colors of the vegetables and chicken breast thinly slice and melted in my mouth, the tenderness of the chicken was amazingly a different texture then the dry portions I'm accustomed too at other places. The medley of Chinese cuisine veggies compliments the whole meal. Snow peas, water chestnuts, green pepper shallots or onions were sliced perfect for each forkful of greenery the broccoli was so tender and not over cooked the baby snow pea was tender which is usually not the case. I've been here multiple times and the food is always good. Sometimes service can be hit or miss, but I've never had a real issue. The portions are generous for the price. I always start with the fried pork dumplings. They're always good and the dipping sauce is one of my favorites. The crab puffs aren't bad either. My go-to dish is the kung pao chicken lunch plate with fried rice and hot and sour soup. I've had the wonton and egg drop soups as well, they're also good. The fried rice doesn't come with vegetables or anything in it like fried rice usually does, but it has a good flavor and it's not oily. My aunt gets the mushu pork. It's pretty tasty, plenty of veggies. Today I tried something different and got the shredded pork and garlic sauce. It was also good. Menu said it was spicy, but I didn't think so. First time through the door. I got the Won Ton Soup and Fried Pork Dumplings. I have to say the restaurant is cozy, it's small, with dark woods and with a good AC system, something critical in a Houston summer. The service was attentive, but not overly so. But we're here about the food, right. Well, I have to say this is good, typical Chinese food. The Won Ton soup was a nice, light broth, with three large won tons in it and green onion. Very, very NORMAL. The Dumplings were light, airy, well steamed, then well fried. I do not make the dumpling skins as well, can't tell if these were made in house or if they were commercial - if you put a gun to my head, I'd guess commercial. I thought the filling could have used a kick as my filling is better by a long shot (the secret is ginger and fish sauce!) BUT, that's not to say they were bad, just nothing that the Food Channel is going to do a special on any time soon. Overall, they were o.k. I am not sure if it is new management or what but you all are losing business because of the decrease in quality and portions of food offered for the price. This place is closest to home, so there is a huge convenience factor for me. I do think the food is decent. Not excellent, but good. Portions are a little smaller than you would expect from a Chinese restaurant, but it is enough. The sauces are flavorful, but not as rich as most places. My go-to choices are the Happy Family meal and the Shrimp and Walnuts (best). Be careful if you order the wings. They take quite a while and can come at the end of your meal. The staff is not overly friendly, but they get the order right and try to get refills out on time. Prices are good - in line with most Chinese restaurants. It is usually quiet and not very packed during the week. They do take a lot of walk-in to go orders. They also deliver to the neighborhoods nearby, big plus for our severely lacking restaurant delivery options. read more

I have gone to Kung Food Cafe twice this week. I am a big fan of Singapore Mei Fun. Theirs lacked spice and flavor. And then today I ordered a lunch special. I was extremely disappointed in the food. First off the lunch special runs you 8 dollars. When I got back to the office, I realized the portion size is super small. I ordered the Tangy Spicy Shrimp with egg drop soup and fried rice. The entree came with 6 shrimp, and really did not taste good at all. The "Fried Rice" is just one ice cream scoop of white rice that was coated in a little soy sauce. There was no vegetables or flavor to it to. The spring roll tasted freezer burnt. The highlight of the meal was the soup. It was actually good. I know lunch specials are going to be small, but this one did not even fill up the plastic lunch box it came in. For being the highest price lunch place around, you get the least amount of food. Over all, I do not plan on going back to Kung Food Cafe. There are other places to eat so close that this one does not make the cut. Don't feel bad if you skip over this place. Sorry. read more

My family and I went to eat here yesterday April 23, 2016 for the first and last time. How this restaurant is still open, amazes me. The food was horrid. My son ordered the General Tso Chicken, it was the nastiest plate ever, no taste. My husband ordered orange chicken and it had a weird taste to it. Our drinks were another story. I ordered water and don't know what water that was from, but I would've been better off drinking tap water from my house. My sons and husbands coke was not even fountain, they brought out 2 litters of coke from the back and brought to the table and pour the drinks in front of us. The coke must have been sitting there for centuries, it was so flat. I could go on, but I think enough was said. You would be better off eating Chinese food at the mall. No kidding read more

We were pretty excited when the menu showed up. There isn't much chinese food around here, so we took a shot at it tonight. The steamed dumplings were mushy and cold. The hot and sour soup was flavorless and WAY too spicy. The orange chicken was average, but again WAY too spicy. My wife had the same complaint about the General Tso's. the eggrolls were chewy and cold in the center. the fried rice was just that. Rice, fried with alittle soy sauce. no egg, no veggies, just rice. We won't be ordering from them again. I'm highly dissapointed. I should have listened to the other reviewers here. I will say this, the delivery was VERY prompt and the delivery dude was really nice. As someone on the neighborhood discussion board said--the only thing good about this place is that it's super close. We've tried it several times, flavorless at best, horrible at worst. My husband said the lo mein isn't bad---probably because it's hard to mess it up. So in a pinch, I will order this for him.... And I'll make myself a PBJ sandwich. This was my first time coming here ... I started with the pork fried dumplings and they were delicious. I ordered the dinner meal that comes with egg roll, choice of soup and rice for approx $9. I decided to try the egg drop soup. I've tried it at other places and I wasn't a fan... it was delicious here . The food came .... I ordered shrimp in garlic sauce and shrimp ... it was delicious as well. The temp was great and it had so much flavor. The food overall was a hit and I think I found my new favorite place . The only downfall was the service . It wasn't that bad but it could have been better. 2 pieces of hair found in my sons Rice and my Dish (across the table opposite sides) I brought it to her attention after having waited 20 min. To get the check. Yet we were the only table, extremely slow people. She had the nerve to bring the hairs to my table and say it's not black so it's not hers. Hmmm, never seen something so tacky in my life. Who does that? I don't care whose hair it was, I was not eating food with hair coming out of your kitchen along with the stale dark brown hard noodles. And I still paid for it, without even asking you to remove it from my bill or even remake the food. Which I probably should have done after paying my bill. Since walking out you said something rude to me, Shame on you. It's no surprise your so-called Chinese "cafe" had NOT 1 table besides my family at 5/6pm yet took 20 min to come to the table, You couldn't ask the lady or the guy to refill the water cups, bring mustard or sauce because it took them literally 10 min to do anything. We moved in to the area last week and after a long day of unpacking, we were starving without a fridge and all. My husband wanted to pop into this place to give the Chinese food a try since I'm chinese and I want to say it was pretty decent for the price and amount of food you get. We got lunch specials for less than $9 an entree and the food wasn't as greasy or salty as some of the Chinese restaurants you run into it. I'm usually really picky about my hot and sour soup but it was actually ok here! The happy family isn't in a white sauce like I'm accustomed to but still good. I wanted to try a new Chinese take out place other than china star and found this place. The food was decent and the prices were competitive. I ordered the tangy/spicy chicken and boy was it spicy. So spicy it's still sitting in my fridge. My husband ordered the Mongolian beef and was a little displeased because it didn't come with veggies only scallions and onions. I too was a bit unhappy with the taste of the chicken. My husband said that it was "pounded" chicken. Well, I don't like pounded chicken. As you can tell by the amount of check-ins I have here, I come here quite often, and with good reason. For starters, it's very close to my house. I walk there more often then not. Second, the prices are very reasonable. I don't really know how to elaborate on that; they just are. Third, the portions are relatively large. I only manage to finish half of the chicken fried rice every visit, and I eat the other half for lunch the next morning. Fourth, the food is just plain good, and healthy. The won ton soup stands out, it's just perfect. Lastly, for people planning to dine in, the restaurant is cozy, it's well cooled, and the staff is friendly and efficient. All of my 39 and counting visits here have been pleasant, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anybody who even remotely likes Chinese food, as this place does it with finesse and class. read more
