The resturant itself was nice, and the staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming! The problem is the food. I come from a japanese family and this seemed like a poor imitation rather than what I was used to. If you want good japanese food i'd reccomend somewhere else. Maybe there's something on the menu I missed, but what I ordered was unacceptable. The staff are wonderful, though, so I really don't want them to be hurt by this review. read more

The sliding glass doors that housed the chilled sushi meat and stuff were opened the entire time.I was there. One of the cooks came out of the back and her hat was disgustingly dirty.She's obviously touching the brim of the hat that was awful. The menus that they had were covered in leftover food drips and I didn't even want to touch it. The gal that was making the sushi had plastic gloves on, but she's also touching meat and fish and knives and dishe's.I would not recommend at all !! read more

This is my go to place for sushi. The fish is fresh and great quality especially given how far we are from the coast. I always get the nigiri sushi and a handful of different kinds. The service is friendly and everything is made to order. I highly recommend the sushi. I haven't had anything else like the teriyaki but I am sure it's great too. read more

The food is very good. It's fresh and there is a nice selection of sushi rolls. The service is very good. They forgot an item for a grubhub order and an employee jumped in his car and delivered it. The ambiance was horrible. Whoever was is charge screamed repeatedly at the employee that delivered the forgotten item and then continued to complain, loudly, after he left. Hope she was upset that someone was going to write a poor review, unfortunately it wasn't about her employee. We all forget, the manager made the entire restaurant uncomfortable. Server wrongfully and knowingly charged me for drinks that we didn't order nor receive. She made no mention and charged my card. Only after I asked for a copy of my receipt did she admit that we were charged for drinks we didn't receive and awkwardly refunded my card and reprocessed for the correct amount. read more

Yelp gives a platform for every moron (including my moron self) to express their opinion, but once again we have yet another YELP "review" about MSG. Well about MSG, soy sauce, walnuts, peas, Campbells soups, to almost every fast food franchise and chain restaurant uses MSG, yet a Yelper and her cat think fresh food doesn't have MSG... she needs a fresh bowl of peas and tomatoes, topped off with parmesan (they all produce glutamates naturally). This is one of the few family owned Japanese restaurants in Colorado, but on Yelp we have angry cat lady who will never be able to appreciate a small business like this. Luckily on sites like TripAdvisor they know what's up because they gave 4 stars, and on Google with 90 reviews they scored a 4.5. So, Yelp is the platform for misguided angry whiners who might need a dog and a jar of peanut butter. read more

We were amazed!! Didn't know what to expect, we were extremely pleased. Had 2 sushi rolls, the fire shrimp, and kunikos teriyaki. Impressive

It's hard for me to write a negative review right now given what's going on. However, this restaurant seemed very busy and doing well so I'll speak my truth. The $97 worth of sushi was terrible. Probably the worst spider roll I've ever had (we love them and ordered two). It tasted old and stale and over fried. The seaweed salad had no sauce and was just a container of strange colored seaweed leaves. The portion of edamame was teeny tiny and the $13 roll with fish on top had old tempura shrimp in it. Also the Tako a top the two pieces of sushi I ordered were a bit larger than a quarter. I asked for extra ginger which wasn't there either. I would stick with a no-nonsense spicy tuna at this place, or go with teriyaki. read more

This was the first time trying a Japanese restaurant in a small town. My wife and I were not disappointed initially the Japanese salad and miso soap was as close to the genuine thing. Atmosphere is simple with their decor. It feels clean too. Both my wife and I both ordered the bento. Her with the chicken katsu and I had the salmon bento. We finished both. The daughter I assume runs the show in the front and she is definitely a character listening to her talk with a GJ local. I would stop by this place again and you should if you have not read more

I really wanted to give them at least four stars, but missing on some pretty big details with the sushi gives them three. I was a little concerned about the place as I was the only person there. Service was very good. The sushi tasted good. I even took a gamble on the octopus, in spite of another review saying it was awful. I will say this: it tasted good, but could have been dried more. The two orders of nigiri sushi were lacking on the rice. It only covered about half of the fish. The rice was also not packed tightly making it very difficult to eat in one bite. The rolls were sadly not uniform. The knife cuts were all over the place. And the rice was not wrapped tightly enough as it easily lost its already disfigures form. I feel for the old Japanese lady making this. She had to have my server next to her every step of the way. They really should consider bringing in someone that is better with the making of the sushi. read more

We have eaten here several times the food has generally been good but tonight sadly the entire experience was horrible. First, to the address issue - Kuniko's website gives the address as: 2695 Patterson Rd #11 Grand Junction, CO 81506. Facebook shows it as 1133 Patterson Rd #11, Grand Junction, CO 81506. Oddly, Google maps shows either address takes you to the same place, Village Fair Plaza. So - don't stress about the address too much. It is at the corner of 12th and Patterson. I worried when Kuniko's re-opened after the long post-fire renovations. But, I shouldn't have. It is still a charming, home-style Japanese restaurant. They increased the size of the sushi bar and have a new sushi chef. He has experience, having worked at another place in town and does an admirable job. This is not a place to go for over-worked sushi, this is traditional stuff and I like that! Soups are very good - soba and ramen (again, without those over wrought touches too many place use). I love the bento boxes - you get a little of many things and they are all good. You get some teriyaki (which they do very well), some tempura, some sushi and pickles. I do miss the grilled salmon and mackerel options, but I am happy with the increased sushi. Some of the dishes, like ginger pork, are ones my husband remembers from the neighborhood spots he frequented in Japan. Service is always sweet and gentle It isn't fast, but you know the food is cooked to order. Service, service, service! Always exceptional at Kunikos. This is an updated review and overall better eating experience today. The food was quite good today. Stopped into Kunikos for because they always offer a nice lunch special of some kind. They change every day and are generally a good deal! The Tempura/Avacado roll had good flavor but otherwise unevenly cut,making some of the pieces fall apart upon handling them. There was not the usual sushi chef, as my server was the one to make my roll. Perhaps that was the difference? Good flavor though. The Ten Don was a generous helping of Tempura shrimp (4 pieces) with mixed Tempura vegetables on a bed of rice, dressed wth Tempura sauce. The Tempura batter was wonderfully fried and good. I was short on assortment of veggies, only having a clump of onion, a carrot coin, and a slice of Sweet potato. The strips of dried seaweed were a nice touch. Pretty dish. The service here is always friendly and kind. If you're in a hurry, this may not be the place for you. But you'll always be greeted with a smile and appreciation for coming to eat here. I decided to try this place on a whim when my two favorite places had a wait list of over an hour. The staff was overwhelmed with takeout orders but they did not even acknowledge our arrival. I'm not sure if 2 stars should be given. We ordered Togo, pork miso ramen, vegetarian ramen, tuna tataki, and the Kuniko roll. Got home and the broth wasn't miso ramen broth more like the base broth that was so salty it was inedible. Besides the fact our tuna tataki was microwaved which was ignored when we saw it, it still was frozen together In some parts, I'd say the roll was the most decent part besides the tiniest portion of wasabi and ginger(enough for 1 piece of the maki roll. Disappointed due to the lack of ramen and sushi in GJ, if we give it another try I really hope it will be a more quality experience. read more

The rice had very little flavor and the hamachi, salmon, and tuna all tasted poorly (old). The only piece from my sushi combo "A" that I liked was the Tomiko (egg). I love to take my friends who love Japanese food here. When I first visited this location, several things really impressed me. First, the salads offered with meals definitely surprised and impressed me. Back in Tucson, where I'm originally from, salads at most Asian restaurants consists of iceberg lettuce in such large pieces as to be impossible to eat with anything but a fork. Here, their salad is made with shredded napa cabbage, which in my opinion has far more flavor, better nutrition, and complements the miso ginger dressing on the salad. The waitress also works as the sushi chef, so she's often super busy. Despite this, she does an awesome job making sure you are happy and well served. read more

The pork dumplings were watery and tasteless. The spider roll was just the soft shell crab which was burnt and overcooked. Nothing else was in it. This is not a fancy place, and that's a good thing. This is about good food, not a fancy BS atmosphere. The staple is a simple teriyaki that they mix with chicken, salmon, beef, and pork with a few added changed based on the protein. This food is the closest GJ will ever get to a normal restaurant in downtown Japan. They have sushi, as well. Want a bento box presentation? There's that, too. Japanese curry? Yep. Real ramen? Yep. Been enjoying this little unknown secret for years now. They treat everyone like family and friends. Had dinner the other night and was pleased to see a fresh look with a complete remodel. They added a traditional sushi bar and sushi chef. But don't stress they still have Kuniko lol n the kitchen. Kuniko emigrated here with her daughter to open this restaurant and brought with her a true Japanese tradition of cooking. They start you with a small side-salad that is shredded white cabbage with a peanut sauce. Perfect before a meal. Delicious! I was in town for a conference, and ended up eating at a couple of Japanese places (dietary restrictions make that a go-to for me). This was definitely a winner, for Grand Junction and in general. I got a salmon roll and an unagi/tamago roll. The latter was tasty, though the tamago got drowned out by the bold eel sauce. It was a good sauce though - not super-sweet the way Americans often like it. The salmon was just delicious. Both were generous portions - larger than traditional-style rolls, and inside out (rice outside). My husband got ramen, and said that while it wasn't a multi-day broth like you get in Japan, it was still quite good. We had absolutely no problem with the service. The waitress was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu, and we were served quickly. My one quibble was that she didn't come back after we had finished our food. I would've liked a tea refill while we relaxed. But, that certainly wasn't a big deal. Another note - prices here were very reasonable, unlike another highly-rated place I'd found in town. The plain-style rolls were I think about $6-7, which is exactly what I'd expect, especially for a larger-than-normal roll. read more

Kuniko's doesn't get enough love and attention when it comes to sushi options in GJ. Kuniko's has a very authentic feel and all of the food I have had here is excellent. This is an excellent option for japanese food, especially sushi. Since it is fairly new place it is not full and food comes out fast, fresh, and delicious. Location is next to college liquors.
