If you're craving good sashimi, Kuni's is a good option! The inside of the place has a bar area and about 7-8 tables that might seat about 20 people. It's a relatively smaller restaurant, but I loved the vibe! The sashimi was very fresh, but the cuts were not as clean as I would have wanted them to be. I ordered chirashi, and the octopus was a little bit too tough and the lotus root pickle was a but too sour. The salmon and tuna were really good. The portion of the chirashi is smaller than most Japanese places, so if you're ordering the chirashi, make sure you have other small plates to munch on. If you're ordering anything, it should be the seafood tempura. The mussels and calamari are VERY tender and delicious!!!! They open at 5pm, and you should get there AS SOON AS THEY OPEN. My husband and I got there around 5:10, but right after we were seated, a line started to form (where the wait was 45 minutes ~ 1 hour). We were so looking forward to splurging on a birthday dinner for my husband at Kuni's. They do not take reservations, so we had to awkwardly wait in a small area by the door until a spot opened up at the sushi bar. The server was rather perfunctory and abrupt. Hubby ordered the small sashimi dinner and I had an appetizer order of aged tofu with a shrimp tempura roll for my entree. The tofu was essentially 3 pieces swimming in a dipping sauce. Good, but not worth the price. My roll was just ok. Hubby's sashimi plate was delicate to say the least. Very thinly sliced fish--nicely arranged, but not a lot of food for the price. Best sushi spot in the Elmwood Village. Yesterday evening I was on a rather lengthy walk around town and found myself walking down Lexington Avenue. I thought to myself, jeez, the Tender Salad at Kuni's is amazing... I wonder if I can get it to go. And, alas, I popped in and ordered the Tender Salad (tuna, tofu, and avocado topped with a balsamic dressing) and a tuna roll to go. These are my go-to options on the Kuni's menu (plus some hot sake) and I wouldn't have it any other way. Kuni's is a rather small establishment on Lexington Avenue but it gets the job done. It's nice, cozy, quaint, complete with a few tables, sushi bar, and actual bar. Yesterday's to go order was my fifth visit to Kuni's and I haven't been disappointed. Whether it's with my mom, brother, aunt, cousin, or friend (all of whom I've dined with here), we all loved it. Although I don't recall the specifics of what each person ordered, everyone enjoyed what they ordered. In the summer months, there are a few tables outside as well which helps since it is pretty tiny in the restaurant. Note that this restaurant is closed both Sundays and Mondays and can get busy around dinner time. Even so, stop by Kuni's if you're in the mood for some fresh delicious sushi. Get the sushi, but nothing else. My wife and I had heard about Kuni's for years and having just moved to the neighborhood thought we'd give it a try. Her tuna roll was fine, just fine, a slight cut above what you'd get at Wegmans. I made the mistake of getting a Japanese fish fry with Japanese slaw and each was about as "Japanese" as I am (I'm Scottish). The fish fry was about one third the size as you'd get at a dive bar, with absolutely none of the flavor. It was bland and tasteless. The "Japanese cole slaw" was shredded cabbage - that's it, no flavor at all let alone Japanese flavor. The waitress brought our main courses and then our appetizers about 15 minutes later - the apps included soba noodles that tasted like nothing, and we also had two cocktails that tasted like nothing. After dropping close to $200 for bland, uninspired food and pretty poor service we crossed the street for chocolate martinis at The Place (go there!). Small, intimate and full of warm energy. We stumbled in for the first time. There was a bit of a wait (first come - first serve and the pandemic has their seating cut in half), but I am so glad we stuck around. We sat front row at the sushi counter and watched the magic unfold. The staff was kind and quick. The sushi was fresh and wonderful and the prices were not intimidating one bit. This is the perfect date spot. Small groups and couples will enjoy a menu that is not difficult to navigate for the novice while still offering very unique and more exotic items for the experienced sushi enthusiast. Green mussels were delicious, the broth was good and chunky with garlic. Spicy tuna, Yellow jack n scallion, Mackerel n ginger were OK, it seemed that there were no ingredients that stood out enough to outshine the seaweed wrapping and rice. If you like sushi, real raw fish sushi (not Americanized rolls full of everything but raw fish) then this is THE place for you! Kuni's is a small restaurant with limited seating. There is often a long wait even for the bar which only seats about 6. They do not take reservations so prepare to wait. They will take your cell and call you when a table is tray so you can go across the street for a drink or have a drink at their bar (wine, sake, beer or a couple of mixed drinks are on the menu). As for the food, it's spectacular! They offer the regulars like salmon, tuna, yellowfin, scallop, octopus, etc. what sets them apart is the quality and freshness. Also, they have rotating specials (for example, when we were there last week, they had giant cooked sardines on special). I highly recommend getting the Large Sushi sampler plate which is well worth the $33 price tag as you get ten pieces of sushi (chef's choice) and a roll. I also recommend the 21 appetizer which has a healthy selection of raw fish with a delicious sauce, avocado and capers. They do offer rolls (both standard and some "fancy") but it's the sashimi that's the bigger draw. Don't waste your time with cream cheese or spicy sauce, go raw and enjoy the fish quality! Parking isn't easy, you may need to walk a block or two especially on a Friday or Saturday night. The sake mixed cocktail (only one on the menu) is light and refreshing. The restaurant is so cozy and romantic (it's tiny, so I wouldn't recommend going with a big group). It just makes me feel so warm and happy inside! There aren't many crazy, over-the-top rolls - just fresh, simple, quality fish. I always order the Sashimi 21, a unique dish of four types of thinly sliced fish with red onions, capers, jalapeños, and a yuzu sauce. I've never had anything like it anywhere else. When it comes to eating seafood several hundred miles inland, I often feel conflicted at best, and disappointed at worst. I've been laid low by bad karma after eating oysters flown to the heartland. I've had shellfish that tasted dry as a bone after their long journey from the water. And I'm plumb terrified by reports that our country's ravenous appetite for tuna might soon wipe my favorite fish from the ocean's memory. For this reason, even the cleanest of sushi joints makes me feel kinda dirty. Like, in a metaphysical way. Even though I'm not religious in the least. I admit that this is not the happiest mindset to be in when approaching Kuni's, a charming little sushi joint in my neighborhood. Especially since it happens to be an excellent restaurant, one that balances all of its elements perfectly. Its dishes are simple, but inventive. The ingredients are luxurious and interesting, but the overall price of the dishes makes it competitive against its lesser sushi siblings. And while the minimalist design makes it an elegant and relaxing place to take a special guest or two (as I did on my last visit), the friendly service makes it as homey as a diner. From the miso to the wasabi pork dumplings, the balance continued throughout our meal, between flavors of umami, salt, sweetness, and even a little spice, in the form of our friends' tuna rolls. It tasted extra delicious when washed down with a little sweet sake -- or a lot of it, as the boys at our table, as my gay best friend would say, "had their drinky pants on." This was totally fine with our server, who happily brought them as much as they could swig. Gotta love Buffalo. The pièce de résistance of the meal came at the end, when everyone was full but me. (This often happens, as I get so caught up in talking to my friends that I forget to eat.) The waitress suggested an off-menu roll: the avocado scallop. My sushi neurosis, which had been held at bay so far by the beautiful food and the lovely company, came sneaking back. Scallops? In Buffalo? Could they be any good? And even if they were good, was it ...right? My apologies to the ocean and the sky, but the scallop rolls were SO good. I've been wanting to dine at Kuni's for quite some time now, but being that Sunday and Monday are my only nights off and the fact that they are closed both those nights, I haven't had an opportunity....til now! There are things I really loved about Kunis and then things I really disliked. Parking is tough. Street parking only, it's in a residential neighborhood while also surrounded by two other bars and restaurants. A Tuesday evening didn't allow for parking so I can't imagine what it's like on a weekend night. We ended up finding a spot down Elmwood, but again, a location surrounded by bars and restaurants, spots are extremely limited come the end of the week. The restaurant is small, really small. Cramped upon walking in the door, hostess stand immediately to the left and the bar right in front of you when opening the door. There is a small seating area with a couch to wait for a table, but no coat rack that I could see anywhere. The bar is tiny and dining area is tiny and the tables were very poorly arranged in my opinion. They had a few high top tables along the wall, one table in the window and then a few tables haphazardly scattered in the center. There were two tables available for two when we came in, but the tables were LITERALLY touching each other. The chairs from both tables were touching, we could have eaten off the person's plate at the table next to us, had it been occupied. I like intimate settings, not that intimate. We were given an option to sit at the sushi bar too but that took away from date night a little, we wanted to sit at a table you know? We asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar and have a drink while we waited for a better table to become available and she told us no problem it would be about five minutes or so. Like I said, the bar is quite small, but there was one seat towards the end so I grabbed that one and my dinner date stood next to me. Their red wine list consisted of one cabernet, one pinot, one malbec and one rioja, I can't recall their whites. Stemless wine glasses, (personal preference, but I've never been a fan.) After ten minutes or so, the hostess came over and told us she was going to seat us at one of the tables we didn't want because it didn't seem like the other tables were getting up soon. We weren't thrilled about this and the temperature in the restaurant was piping hot, I was quite uncomfortable in my sweater and the heat just added to the claustrophobic feel of the tables being so close. It was slightly agitating that just ten minutes after being seated, a high top table became available and a couple that walked in shortly after us was seated there. We would have waited the additional 10-15, heck 20 more minutes to have a good table. Those are my only negatives about the place, phew, onto the good stuff. The service was fantastic. Attentive, opinionated and fast (maybe a little too fast, for people who want to space their courses out.) We had no problem with the quick flow of courses as we were starving and also came in to dine later in the night so didn't plan on being those people who need to sit and talk for an hour after signing their credit card bill. Never be those people. Anyways, I say opinionated because when I asked about a roll and whether or not it would be paired well with a vegetable, she offered a different pairing that she enjoyed and I loved that. We went with two rolls; spicy tuna and yellowtail with jalapeño (our server's recommendation.) Both rolls were phenomenal. Now, usually I have a problem with places that don't serve brown rice and usually when I ask why I never get an answer. This time, when I asked why, our server told us that the chef is very particular about his rice and about the ingredients he brings into the restaurant in general. I respect that. You don't do brown rice, you don't do brown rice, at least someone gave me a legitimate answer this time. Another thing I loved about the chef is that he doesn't use dairy in his food. HUGE plus for me and I'm sure many others out there. No butter in any of the dishes, I'm in love. I hate having to ask for no butter in my food when I dine out and here I don't have to worry about that. Healthy, fresh food, so awesome. We started with their appetizer special which was salmon tartare topped with avocado, absolutely delicious. Two salads for the table; a house with radishes, cucumber and carrots in ginger dressing and the sea vegetable salad for me. I love seaweed but I also like house salads so it was a great combination. Greens topped with three different kinds of seaweed with your choice of ginger dressing or miso dressing. I went with ginger and it was perfect. The cajun tuna was another item we chose, sashimi style with a ponzu sauce. I wasn't crazy about this dish because of the sauce, but the actual tuna was tasty. Spicy Tuna, Roll 2. Shrimp Roll 3. Yellowtail. My guest ordered; the TOFU salad to start and the Shrimp Dumplings. My seaweed salad and Miso soup was the normal you would find at any Sushi bar. My three different rolls were great! They all were fresh and packed nicely, with a very very slight fishy taste, but made perfectly that is just melted in my mouth. I have never had shrimp dumplings before was hesitant to try them but not anymore. The shrimp dumplings were out of this world. They were cooked perfectly, outside was so tender and packed with fresh tasting shrimp. I made a mistake that night and should have order that instead my sushi rolls. The TOFU salad had daikon, alfalfa and radish sprouts, served with a sesame-soy dressing. Dressing really made the salad tasty and made your taste buds go a little wild. Salad had fresh everything and was presented well. Kuni's is small inside but has a cozy and intimate feel to it, great for a date night with your other half. During the warm months you can dine outside in front of the restaurant. Prices are more then reasonable for some fantastic sushi, and the place has a small little sushi bar you can sit at and a nice cocktail bar. read more

Sake- they have various kinds so experiment. Service- attentive. Very friendly. The restaurant is clean and has a very casual elegance to it just like their food. Two words: salmon sashimi. I'm definitely no stranger to sushi or sashimi and I frequent Japanese restaurants often. But the salmon sashimi from Kuni's is the best I've ever had, and in Buffalo NY of all places! Melt in your mouth delicious. I had a tasty pisatchio ice cream there for desert (although was disappointed they were out of green tea ice cream) but after dessert I had to have more salmon sashimi! I've been dreaming of that raw fish ever since... Also tried the grilled mackeral, and the fish was grilled to perfection. I'm typically not a huge fan of mackeral because in the past I've experienced this particular fish to be a little too fishy for my taste, but this mackerel was superb. Another mouth-watering delight from Kuni's. So if you ever find yourself in Buffalo (which to my surprise I kind of love), make sure you visit Kuni's and make absolutely positively sure you have the salmon sashimi. And the grilled mackerel. The place is charming and the food (at least the two aforementioned items) truly can't be beat. I have had plenty of sub par sushi before. I admit I have often hit up Wegmans sushi after a late night serving shift- but now I am aware of top notch sushi. My brother has moved back "home" from Raleigh, NC where for the last few years he has been continuously bragging about his culinary feats- and declared he was determined to find A+ sushi in Buffalo. That being said we walked the couple blocks from his apartment to Kuni's after many recommendations to celebrate his birthday. After a short wait we were seated in front of the sushi bar getting a front row seat to the magic happening. I allowed my brother to dictate our choices and gave in to his push for me to finally try Sake. We started my new sushi experience with Miso, Grilled Octopus and Wasabi Shumai. EVERYTHING was amazing. Next we moved on to a small sushi combo, large sashimi combo and asked for off the menu spicy tuna hand roll. I tried so many different types of fish I have never had before. The raw scallops were buttery, rich and delicious, Fluke also stood out to me along with the heat of the spicy tuna roll. We finished with traditional Tamago- which was heavenly. Overall I am sooo pleased with Kuni's and will most certainly keep coming back. I'm amazed out how much authentic sushi and sashimi I was missing out on. With great expectations they still blew my taste buds out if this world! Things I expected were fresh fish and seafood, but I was not expecting the delicious dessert. Kuni is a genius for putting pumpkin crème brûlée on their menu. I love Crème brûlée and it's simplicity but never have I ever had something so delicious to end my meal. I was bold and tried new things, nothing disappointed. The fish liver was probably my least favorite but now I can kick that off the bucket list. It was very smooth, but I'm just not a fan of liver. I also tried Toro, which is fish belly!!! First of all I'm not sure if that's the technical term because I no idea fish even had bellies, but I digress. It was amazing the smoothest piece of fish that I've ever eaten before and it melted in my mouth. I loved my spicy tuna roll and scallop and avocado roll. I tried saki for the first time in a long time. I was lost in the drink menu I recognized, nothing. The bartender was very helpful in guiding me to my choice. RAWRRRR poor dental students should not be eating here!! But I ate here anyway and went super poor. So I came here with Lisa W., who obviously didn't enjoy it too much, but I am no sashimi connoisseur like her so I thought the food was pretty decent. Their food is definitely not up to par with Seabar, but it's a super cute place and doesn't have super bright lights that make you dizzy. I had the I love shellfish dish and it was pretty good. I loveeee scallops so that was plump and delicious! The crab legs tasted good too, but they didn't crack when I bent them - they kinda like...just bent and didn't break so that was kinda weird. Anyway, I was feeling fat so I had the large sushi combo too. The fish probably wasn't all that fresh, but still edible. I don't think I'll be back here, but it was a good experience to have for sure. read more

Kunis is my favorite Japanese seafood restaurant. They have the best sushi in Buffalo hands down. I love that the rice is inside and not outside. The seafood is all fresh and delicious. Their sashimi is impeccable as well as their house Green tea, Seaweed Salad, and their scrumptious refreshing Green Tea gelato. The service is five star and they have an outdoor seating area as well. This restaurant is cozy, clean, and modern on the inside. I will always be back and excited to eat at Kunis, you feel so great in every aspect during and after eating at this restaurant. read more

Some of the best sushi in the area for excellent prices. You really can't go wrong with Kuni's if you're looking for great seafood, particularly their sushi. I had been hearing great things about this place for quite a while but never had the opportunity to check it out until recently, and I was not disappointed. We had their soft shelled crab special and 5 different rolls of sushi, and everything was absolutely delicious. The sushi is served at room temperature (as it should be) and was really excellent. I was and still am blown away at the prices as well for how delicious each roll was. Highlights for me were the eel & cucumber as well as the spicy tuna - I almost always get spicy tuna, and they knocked it out of the park. They have quite a few other menu options too if you're not in a sushi mood, and though we didn't try any, the ones I saw from glancing around the restaurant did look appealing. Seating is an issue, especially if you go on the weekend. The place is very tiny and if you're not going at an off time, there will likely be a wait. We were able to fit in at the sushi bar which was fine, and the chefs were very friendly, as was the service staff. They also have specials, but if you see anything about tuna and yams, DO NOT get it. Our mistake but man, that almost ruined what was an excellent meal. read more
