To begin, we have been unsure of this place for years for many reasons. Finally decided to give them a try, and boy do we regret it! My husband ordered a Diet Coke that they kept topping off during our time there. Only to find out they were charging us $4/refill! Mind you, the glass was filled to the brim with ice and barely any soda pop. Steak was subpar & dry for $70. Ambience.....2/10. Reminded me of my great grandmothers nursing home (rest her beautiful soul!) bill came out to nearly $200 for 2 steak dinners and 4 glasses of ice with a splash of Diet Coke. Would I recommend? Meh. The reviews and pictures were mixed but we decided we wanted to try something new for my dad's birthday so made a reservation for 6 people. Let me start with the service...while our waiter was friendly she was not attentive to our table after taking the order. We noticed all the other tables had bread and we were sitting for 45 minutes after ordering our meals and did not get bread or even a refill or drinks or water. We got the attention of our server and asked for bread. 20 more minutes and she brought small basket with 5 pieces of bread (for a table of six waiting over an hour now). We asked for more and 10 minutes went by, so we asked again assuming they forgot. We were told it's in the oven. Finally, another small basket of 5 slices shows up in another 10 minutes. After 90 minutes our apps arrived. Seafood chowder was ok at best, raw clams were tasty, salads and dressings were very good. Our meals came soon after, but total wait from when we sat was 2 hours. Steaks were very good, salmon was average at best, seafood pasta was ok, halibut special was decent. Overall, the entrees were forgettable. We ordered desserts which were surprisingly fantastic. The rice pudding, crem brûlée, and their cheesecake/ice cream were all delicious. Now back to the service....by the time we finished dessert, not one water glass was refilled and the table wasn't bussed. We piled our empty appetizers and salad plates at the end of the table and they remained there the entire meal. We just went here for Mother's Day brunch. My parents frequently come here for dinner so we thought it would be an excellent choice for that occasion. The food was delicious! Everyone at the table enjoyed what they ordered. My chicken and waffles were great (it was a little confusing having 3 tenders and 4 waffles though, i think just 3 waffles with it would have been still filling but made more sense). The blueberry pancakes my sister had were excellent and both of my parents enjoyed their eggs along with different breakfast meats. They also served free mini muffins, not sure if that was a Mother's Day special or if they are always served! We had the first reservation of the morning so the staff was attentive and quick during our meal. However once the crowd started to pick up, even though the noise wasn't bad, we waited much longer to see the waitress again. It wasn't really an issue until we had to wait 30+ minutes after we were done our food to get the check and pay. They do have a note on the menu that if you are in a rush to let them know. (we weren't, but it was just strange to get food faster than the check!) Overall it was a nice and tasty brunch. Come with a group usually about 2x a year. The food is pretty good but service can be off at times. We came in for 630 and were finished till almost 930 last time cause it was burger night. I get we had over 20 but we also have a limited menu so that needs work. I'm not a big fish person but they do have a pretty good Thai calamari to start and I'll partake in a few. The seasoning takes the fishy taste of the calamari away. Next is always the homemade fried meatballs. I could probably eat 10 of these they are so good and packed with flavor from the seasonings. We had a surprise luncheon for a friend having her 80th Birthday! The food was delicious, our service and the atmosphere were excellent. We were there for about two hours. No one rushed us and we had a beautiful afternoon. The owner stopped by our table to make sure everything was OK. There wasn't a single scrap of food returned, we ate everything. A memorial luncheon for 26 on a Thursday...we were looking forward to this luncheon as many of us had never been there. Choices looked great for a $20. Fixed price lunch including beverage and a salad. Our table all ordered burgers .....they did say they only offered them med well done with fries. We all ordered and out of 7 people, I person found the burger edible! They were Well done and dry. No salad served. But the bacon was perfectly crisp. And the fries were warm . We won't be back ! I asked a bunch of people how this restaurant was before I tried it. After hearing so many positive reviews I felt I had to give it a go for dinner one night. I think it has some local charm, but I was a little underwhelmed. The place looked and felt old. Maybe when it first opened it was fine dining, but now it just gave me old diner vibes. The servers were really nice and thorough in taking our order and serving our drinks. They seemed like they've worked there for a long time. Our party ordered pasta dishes and steak. The food was very solid. The pasta was flavorful and both my friends finished their plates. I enjoy the steak but I also felt like the sides were very basic asparagus and mashed potatoes. No flare or excitement to it. Overall, I just felt like this place was well past it's hay day. Not overly great, not overly poor.. just a very basic and old town steakhouse. A nice local restaurant with a wide variety of options on their menu. Tonight they were serving their crabcake special, full of crab meat. Red snapper was fresh and delicious with delicious sauce. I've driven by this place several times and never stopped in because the reviews are all over the place. I was torn on making a decision. I love steak and I love seafood so going to this place should have been a no brainer. I felt like I was playing the lottery before going in. Would I get the five star experience or the single star? Well I got the two star and that's only because the server was very nice. Where to begin.... Ordered mussels fra diablo and they were hit or miss. Some were perfectly cooked, others were sandy/gritty and fishy. The sauce did have a kick but no consistency. It was like spicy tomato soup. We ordered 2 New York strips medium rare which come with chef's vegetables and mashed potatoes or wedges. I subbed the potatoes for asparagus and my wife picked mashed potatoes. My mouth began to water as the entrees were near. I was prepared for a thick cut NY strip, seasoned beautifully, and a seared to perfection. What was placed in front of me was none of those. The picture tells the story. Also some of the chef's vegetables were raw. Anyway on to some highlights of the night. The bread was warm and the salads were nice and fresh. My wife subbed the house salad for the Caesar which for some reason is $5 more however it was money well spent since she enjoyed it the most. Mussels were $9 which was right but there was a $.50 additional charge for the sauce. Steak prices are all "market price" and seem completely made up. I felt like this was the Spirit airlines of restaurants. The owner/manager was pretty interesting to say the least and blamed the server for the mishaps of the night. We were looking on Grubhub for a good burger, and even though we've had a less than stellar meal at Kunkel's before, when they came up on Grubhub as Kunkel's Burger Joint, we thought it was a good opportunity for redemption. We were wrong. They claim the burgers are made from the leftovers of their cut steaks - the ends or pieces too small to sell, so we were hopeful for at least some flavor from the fattiness. We ordered two different burgers - the Steakhouse Burger and the Brown Sugar bacon burger. We also ordered a wedge salad, which has Johnny 5 dressing - yeah, we don't know what Johnny 5 sauce is either. We got a call almost immediately after placing the order asking how we wanted our burgers cooked, since there wasn't a way to indicate it. We asked for medium. The burgers came pretty close to well done. The steak house burger was okay, dry, no bold flavors. The brown sugar bacon burger was super sticky on the bottom - we ended up using a fork to eat it. It was supposed to have tomato - it did not - and there were no condiments. We added ketchup ourselves because it was so dry. The burgers came with four fries each - yes, friend, 4 fries. The fries were over cooked but had some seasoning - maybe a taste of salt. But some were so overcooked that they were tough and chewy to eat. The wedge was huge - loaded with bleu cheese - thank goodness. It was literally the only taste. The Johnny 5 dressing pooled in the bottom - it was mostly watery and flavorless. Overall, the pop up burger joint suffers the same issues the restaurant itself suffers from - a real lack of flavor. And a $15 burger with nothing more than an anemic piece of bacon and some lettuce isn't a value by any stretch. Throwing four fries next to it is sort of an insult. We said last time that this was a never again for us. We wish we had listened. read more

My husband and I went into Kunkels (BYOB) during restaurant week on a Sunday night. The menu was $35 for a 4 course meal. One starter, 2nd course (same size as a starter for one person), 3rd course (entree) and dessert. It was easy to be excited since Kunkel's regular menu is on the pricey side and since I don't eat much steak it's been on my list of places to try. One course I really enjoyed was the lobster chowder soup as my starter. It was the soup of the day and very enjoyable. Another dish was the dessert called death by chocolate. It was devoured quickly! Death by chocolate was rich overall with a lite icing topping. We both agreed that there were a few hiccups with the other entrees as far as overall taste. To be fair, the entrees were more of a 3 star and I was kinda thinking Kunkel's fell a bit flat. The service was very nice and friendly. This is the third time in the past 8 years that we have tried Kunkel's and the results have been pretty consistent. The 3 star is an average of ratings all over the place. We wanted things to be better and they really could have been with a little effort, but sadly I doubt they will improve, so I don't think we'll return. Service - 2 stars, at most. The hostess (owner?) was an odd mix of friendly, brusque, helpful and smarmy. I think they overdo the 'family friendly' aspect, assuming we all want to be their besties. They act like a family run diner, friendly but not very professional. Our server started by admitting she was working "both sides" and seemed unprepared. (The restaurant did not seem to be very crowded, just a normal Saturday evening.) Her knowledge of the menu was limited to her notes which she had to refer to constantly. (The pork chop special was described as "stuffed." umm with what? She had to check her notes...) While things weren't really 'bad' with service, it was just very inconsistent and uncoordinated, and needs lots of polish. One example - As we were eating our shared appetizer of Killer Shrimp, the hostess asked if we wanted some bread for dipping in the sauce and we agreed that would be great. The server then stopped by and asked to clear the plate before we received the bread, and was surprised, saying she was told we didn't want any bread. (huh?) Probably the worst service involved my wife's order. She asked if items on the salads on the menu could be altered to remove things she either was allergic to (mushrooms) or just didn't like (onions). When told that was not an option, she ordered a simple garden salad with grilled chicken added, an extra listed for the other salads. 5 minutes later she returned to say the chef refused to serve that as it wasn't on the menu. Seriously? He couldn't add a side of grilled chicken? That is unacceptable service from the chef (who I suspect is also an owner). The last negative comment I have about service was about an inconsiderate episode at the end of our meal. While waiting for our check, the hostess had an extended and loud conversation with people leaving from the next table, who were apparently regular customers, about their recent illnesses and all the associated symptoms... Yeah no I don't need to hear about all of your gross symptoms in a restaurant setting. The other runners and staff were unassuming and cordial, just doing their job in a professional manner. (Probably not family, so their jobs weren't as secure.) Food - Averaged out to 3.5 stars but also a very mixed bag. High points were the start and finish -- The soup of the day, butternut squash and carrot, was tasty, though maybe a tad salty. The Killer Shrimp appetizer was a surprise. The shrimp was grilled perfectly and the sauce was exactly as described. Spicy and flavorful, but not the kind that makes you sweat, just flavorful with a slow build of heat. The bread for dipping didn't go to waste! To finish our meal, we split a bowl of what the restaurant called Cheesecake Freeze. It was delicious, exactly as described, ice cream with cheesecake blended in. A hit! The Johnny Wedge salad I had was OK, though I have to wonder why the Johnny 5 sauce is so "famous" as it was pretty unmemorable. Middle of the road salad, fresh and crispy iceberg lettuce, OK dressing with some bacon bits, but not a lot of blue cheese crumbles. The not so great parts included the chef's ignorant response to asking for adding chicken to a salad. The substituted Caesar Salad was large though not unique, but with plenty of chicken. The dressing was oddly over the top creamy and wasn't used much by my wife. My pork chop special dish was challenging. When the server read her notes about what it was stuffed with, there was a loooong list of ingredients that sounded appealing including bacon and cheese, that I felt it was worth a try. Unfortunately the end result lacked any distinctive taste, just a salty mush. The chop was cooked nicely but overall it was underwhelming. In the end, we both felt the restaurant was too self-congratulatory. (Why are there so many dishes described as "famous" on their menu? Famous to who?) There obviously is a reasonably strong following of repeat customers who like this sort of family run diner atmosphere. But our experiences haven't been good enough to get us to go back more than every couple of years, just hoping for improvements. read more

Went here last night. They were fairly busy. Big party celebrating a birthday. They kept our drinks filled for the most part. We ordered. Got our salads quickly. I kept mine bc I wanted to eat it with my meal. ONE hour later and 4 people (one server asked me twice) asking me if my salad was done to which I replied "I'm eating it with my meal" our food came, we asked for our checks and boxes as we got them. The owner maybe or the manager, lady in a non staff outfit, came up at the end asked how everything was and said hope we didn't have to wait too long. One person said "we waited over an hour to get our food after we ordered." She replied "that's not too long, you think that's long?" We politely said yes and just went on our way. So if you want okay food, waiting an eternity, and unapologetic or maybe I'd even go as far as ignorant (at least the lady we spoke with) staff, THIS is your place! read more

Our first excited Erie cruise there was a Friday night in Sept. had a lovely atmosphere, low noice and ALL the staff was delightful even though they were short handed. We order one Filet and one Ravioli and when I say what a treat. It truly was a phenomenal! The steak was excellent. One of us being a Chef and the other being a master griller we have struggled going out anywhere since after the pandemic because the quality of food and the lack of cooks has really deteriorated this fabulous industry. In last few months we have eating about in every steak house in AC, Philly and everywhere in between. We have paid grim$160 at the Hard Rock from a Bone in Rib-eye to boneless Filet at $65. The food was so amazing we are heading back tonight with a party of 7 so that we can introduce our children to this fabulous place. read more

What a delicious surprise! The restaurant is family run, and they make sure everything is top-notch. The food is good! Some of their specials and appetizers and the frozen cheesecake dessert are so unique and delicious. They have a selection of fresh oysters that those at the table ate them were blown away. So fresh and so good. The kunkel spicy shrimp was delicious. As it's described on the menu is exactly how it tastes. Not too hot when you eat it but that lingering heat just grows. And not in a bad way. The steaks were all done to perfection, the fra Diablo sauce on the pasta was delicious, the table was silent when the food was delivered because everyone was eating lol. The desserts were all delicious as well, especially their frozen cheesecake ice cream dessert. They had numerous flavors of cheesecake and it's like they put it in an ice cream machine and serve it to you. So velvety smooth and delicious. Make sure you save room after dinner. Steaks were cooked to order and cooked perfectly the way we like our steaks - medium rare leaning towards rare. Plenty of food and can't beat the prices given that it's the ONLY steakhouse in the area that is BYOB. Where can you go locally and get great food, bring your own wine to pair with your meal, receive great service and delicious food? (waiting for your answer.....) LOL. The restaurant sits back off of Kings Highway so it is not immediately visible when trying to find it.However i was glad I did.I found it to be immaculate and pleasantly upscale . The menu included a variety of selections that everyone would appreciate. It is a BYOB place which was not a problem for either of us . I was told that they served the best burgers in the area so we anxiously gave them a try. They were huge and cooked to perfection. I might add that our server was efficient and very pleasant which only added to our dining experience . My only regret is not trying this little gem of an establishment sooner! read more

We went with a party of 9 on 5/13 for Mother's Day dinner. I ordered the braised beef, my partner the chicken marsala, and mother the scallops. The food was cold. The beef and chicken were completely dried out and inedible. The scallops were cold. My brother ordered the steak wrapped in bacon and he said it was really good. Saturday night 4 of us decided to try Kunkel's restaurant in Haddon Heights, NJ. It wasn't busy except for an anniversary party in an attached room. While the restaurant knew about this party they did not have enough help ( or chefs) to handle the dining room. A very nice waitress asked for our drink order and delivered about 15 minutes later. At that time we ordered appetizers and dinner. This was 6:30 pm. Our appetizers arrived 8:15. No one placed bread on our table, we had to ask. Around 8:30 Carol Kunkel passed our table and I politely told her we had to wait 2 hours for our appetizer. She got extremely angry and defensive and said this was the norm for any fine restaurant !!!! Having my own restaurant and catering company for 30 years I ( very nicely) explained this was not the case from my experience. She then gave us all a dirty look and walked off disgusted. Food: Grilled oysters way too peppery, small and no grill marks. One of us ordered the wedge with bleu cheese dressing on the side and it was served with a lot of French dressing all over it. No bleu cheese dressing. Entrees come with a small salad but New York strip was good. Beef Bordelaise was good. Crab cakes way too much filler. The waitress asked if we wanted dessert but by 9:15 we declined as we were so disappointed in how we were treated we couldn't wait to leave. We were seated by the owner who obviously loves her job and is proud of her beautiful restaurant. Our server, Denise, was beyond excellent. She was informative, professional, low key and gave her recommendations. She recited all of the "market prices" smoothly from memory which was a feat! Now onto the meal....the menu is slightly confusing. Both salad, mixed veggies and your choice of mashed or potato wedges is included in the entree price. The online and in person menu doesn't make that clear. We glanced at it online so we all kind of knew what we were ordering. That being said there were some additions. Denise was able to describe the intricate specials with ease. Two of us had steak and two had surf and turf. Denise raved about the mashed and she wasn't wrong! The steaks were excellent and the lobster was good. The salad dressings are something to write home about. All are homemade and beyond delicious. The desserts were epic! Omg. The concoctions that they created should be patented and sold around the world. They created a life changing dessert called "Cheese Cake Freeze". Heaven in a waffle bowl! If nothing else, save room for this bowl of deliciousness! The atmosphere was quiet, clean and perfect for a date or elegant evening out. I'd turn the music up a bit because we are quiet conversationalist but our friends, who we fully intend to bring with us in the future, are loud and sometimes having music cancels out our noisy group!
