This humble market offers a ton of interesting Eastern European goods at insanely low price points. As a disclaimer, I am not ethnically Polish nor have I ever been to Poland. However, it seems like it offers a lot of traditional goods that I have never seen in American grocery stores (and staples too). In a neighborhood that is rapidly becoming more expensive, Kurowski's is a community institution that gives a peek into the historically large, working-class Polish immigrant community in Avondale. Disappointed by my last visit here. The kielbasa and kalbanosa tasted like old thawed meat. Was not tasty at all. Very disappointed as a new person in town. Missed my Patak deli in the Atlanta area that had much better meat than what I purchased here. Surprised as I thought Chicago should have good Polish sausage. Oh well, I'll have to look for another place. Too bad because this place is so close to where I'm staying. However the imported Polish food, the kraut & 'shroom pierogis were available, and the close proximity added a star to the disappointment I had in the meat I purchased. read more

When I make a trip back to see my family in the suburbs, i always like to bring some goodies back home to CA. When I search for one of my favorites, Kiszka, here on Yelp, Kurowski's shows up #1 so imagine my disappointment when I finally got to stop by last week...and no kiszka. I did pick up some fantastic looking fresh polish sausage (surprisingly bland tasting) and some really good bread. A little disappointed, but I understand places can be hit and miss. Delicious sandwich meats, and great grocery products. Sadly, I went last week, asked to buy a sandwich, and they insisted they don't sell people sandwiches. Granted, the staff member who told me this is one of the same staff members who used to serve me back in 2012. I used to see them make people sandwiches all the time. Today, I went in, and a woman in line said, "Oh, you go ahead, I'm waiting for some sandwiches." Apparently, you need to be an angry old white woman to get their sandwiches, otherwise, they will lie to you and say they don't make them. As I said, great food, but it sucks being discriminated against, at an establishment you've been frequenting for over a decade. read more

I don't go to Chicago without stopping by this place. Its like popcorn and deep dish pizza to me. Last time I stopped by was a few weeks before Christmas. I always get the Piwna smoked polish sausage. There is a few hundred dollars of this sausage in my freezer now. It lasts a long time frozen and is always delicious. I put it in beans and rice, jambalaya and often throw a bunch in fried cabbage. Because I buy so much I always call ahead. They will shrink wrap it for you if you ask. Its a little extra but worth it. Communication is some times difficult but always worth the effort. read more

This will always be my favorite Polidh Deli. I went her years ago with my mom. I think they've been there forever. Do try the Kielbasa, I like the only closest to the front of the store, smoked salmon, pierogi, lunch meat. The ham varieties are really excellent. There is a nice selection of soups. Grab a E. We decided to stop in after reading about the history of this store. Plus my father is 100% Polish so thought it would be fun to deliver him some foods he grew up with. This place was so much fun! This was a full blown Polish grocery store, not just sausage by any means. We had so much fun exploring all the fun foods. Most people (customers included) were speaking Polish or had thick accents. I felt like I was transformed into another world and I loved it. The staff was so incredibly kind and helpful. We cooked up a Polish feast that evening for dinner and it was delicious. And my dad was so excited to receive such nostalgic foods. Sausage, cabbage rolls, real rye bread, etc... It made his week. Thank you Kurowski's!! read more

I'd love to support this local business but the people working at the deli counter were not wearing masks at all. The food is at the same height as their mouths so they're breathing directly on the food. I find this unsanitary, dangerous and disrespectful. They weren't enforcing customers distancing or wear masks so everyone in the deli line was on top of each other. I had to leave without buying anything. read more

Kurowski's is the best thing to come out of Poland since the Solidarity movement. Before discovering this place, I almost paid $6 for a loaf of rye bread. After waking up from the mild heart attack I suffered, I did an Internet search for a deli that has good rye bread. All praise to Mr. Google and his splendid finding machine as I was directed to Kurowski's. The rye bread is fresh, delicious, and as big as Cocker Spaniel for less than $2. I was also hoping for a similar deal on rye whiskey but was not as lucky. Kurowski's also has one of the most impressive mustard selections I have seen in Chicago (most costing around $1) and more candy and tea than they do sausage. The deli is about a ten minute walk from the Logan Square blue line station during which you will pass about 50 places to buy plastic shoes, Paris Drapes, and Crown Liquors which is a bar/liquor store/currency exchange. read more

A great Sunday afternoon for me is strolling down N. Milwaukee Avenue and stopping into the Polish deli's, restaurants, and retail shops. And Kurowski's is not to be missed! Not only is there a deli full of smoked meats, cheeses, and prepared Polish specialties such as stuffed cabbage (golabki) and pierogies, but also Rich's Bakery attached next door. This place is fantastic. For all the 1 star reviews...probably Americans who have never travelled abroad. I patiently waited my turn at the meat counter (what a concept), and then was able to get my polish sausage. My polish is limited to "hello" and "thank you", but the woman spoke excellent English and I had no issues. This place is packed with every type of polish food you could ever want, and the bread is amazing. I got out right as the after church rush was staring, so I didn't have to wait too long. If you go on Sunday, try to get out before 10 am, it fills up fast! I can't wait to go back! read more

Another Asian reviewing for Kurowski here, ha. I come to Kurowski with my boyfriend every other week. He's pretty Polski. I've also acquired a taste for polish cuisine after he introduced me to some tasty edibles. The meat is really affordable here. They have a large selection of kielbasa. I don't exactly what they are/were but the ones I've eaten were always delicious. I'm actually a fan of the blood sausage. I am Filipino and my culture has its own version of a blood dish known as dinuguan (sp.), so I am open to different types of food. The raw meat has always been much more affordable than what you find at the chain groceries in Chicago. I always get their ground beef. How can you beat $1.99/lb? They also have a great selection of pre-prepared and pre-cooked foods. They have also been really good. The amazing gem to Kurowski, in my opinion, is it's giant soup selection and their cakes and pastries. I am a huge Tripe Stew fan. It's absolutely delicious and great during the arctic winter we had recently. They are pretty affordable too. The cakes are soooo delicious. I normally have my boyfriend pick them out since he is more aware of the best ones. I love their apple cakes, tiramisu-like cakes, and the poppy seed/ cheesecake ones. I've come to realize that Polish cakes tend to be heavy. They aren't exactly angel cakes that kind of rise high and are light. You definitely get your money's worth here. As a warning, if you don't speak Polish you might feel intimidated when you try to order something from the deli counter. There are people that work there, especially the younger ones, that do speak English. Fortunately for me, my kochanie orders :) read more

When I first moved to Chicago and saw prices for deli meats at Jewel and Dominicks, I almost cried. Luckily I found this place. Full of surly Polish women manning the deli counter, it is by far one of the largest selections of hams, sausages, and cheeses you can find in Chicago. Most of their selection is about $3-4.00/lb. for the finest in meats. Then there is the rye bread which is intensely amazing. Bakers take note, you can also get live yeast here for cheap. It'll give your bread anything else you bake that needs rising a robust flavor. If decide to come here on a weekend, learn Polish numbers because their call system isn't as fast as the ladies calling out numbers. The Polish patrons will help you out should you ask them and translate for you should you be helped by someone who can't speak English. Try to come here on a weekday morning or late evening when it's slow so you can sample their meats. They'll also explain to you about the more obscure meats unique to Polish food like the veal/mushroom meatloaf or the why there are over 20 cuts of cured pork. If you're an anti-social fiend that might feel the urge to kill just by walking up to the counter, take heart because in the back there are prepackaged cuts of meat. Read the labels because they look similar but a lot of them are different. Fish, and some sausages are also in the back. Good Polish chicken noodle soup too. Also they have a selection of Polish imported groceries like chocolates, soda, and juice. You may recognize some labeling, but keep in mind that food manufacturers change recipes to adjust for regional preferences so chocolates are richer, sodas are spicier, and the juice more creative while everything also has less sugar. I highly recommend the carrot apple juice with the little bear on it. FREE SOUP BONES. I'm not a fan of Purdue or most supermarket butchered meats and still opt for an actual butcher. They offer up the bones from their butchered meats for free should you purchase any meat at their counter. They have some of the best chicken and cuts of pork in the city. I can only think of a few other butchers with better tasting meat or non-yellow chicken. They have one of the LARGEST selection of jellies should be the type that refuses to eat anything without jelly. Everything from rose hips to strawberry. The currant flavored jellies are fantastic on scones. read more

I will add prices are so reasonable and there is free parking in lot just west of the shop. So glad I still have some use of my Polish, I understand more than I can speak, however if I shop here I'm sure I can pick more of it up in no time. Not only does the staff speak to you in Polish, the customer's are a friendly bunch and we were conversing while waiting or our turn at the counter. You want authentic, this is it! I have to admit - when it comes to pierogi, this is the place to get them. I enjoy a good pierogi and unfortunately if I want to purchase some to cook at home, the selection at most places is very limited. Jewel offers some low-quality frozen boxes of Mrs. T's, but even on sale it's not a great deal. Some places carry Kasia's pierogis, but the higher quality still results in much-higher prices than I prefer. Enter the Kurowski. The variety of frozen handmade pierogis is astonishing. I was discovering pierogi fillings I never knew existed. Luckily, the descriptions are in Polish and English, but even if I didn't know which contained meat, potato, cheese or fruit - they'd still be delicious. My favorites are the sweet cheese because they're as close as you can get to blintzes without actually eating a blintze. (Small warning: if you get the sweet cheese, they have liquid inside and a tendency to squirt when biting. Same applies for blueberry, but add staining power.) I wasn't in the mood for sausage, but I did pick up some bigos (hunter's stew) for my girl. It looked as though they were going for $1.99/lb on the signs, but almost all the labels read $2.99/lb. Luckily, I found a couple containers with the proper $1.99/lb label and price because I don't speak Polish and wouldn't have been able to explain that the sign said one thing and the container said another. One of the problems with language barriers and preferring to be non-confrontational, I suppose. Also, the rye bread is excellent. Picked up a loaf and I think it's the first time I've ever bought a loaf of bread and none of it was sacrificed due to moldiness because it takes so long to eat a loaf of bread. This stuff was gone pretty quickly, almost all in the form of delicious toast. If you enjoy pierogi like I do, but want a good variety and good price at the same time - I highly recommend this place! read more

I moved to Logan Square within walking distance of this gem of a Polish Grocer in Chicago. All I have to say is YOU MUST GO HERE ONCE. Even if you don't live in or near Logan Square, you have to experience Kurowski's for yourself. Even if you don't speak Polish, you have to experience Kurowski's for yourself. If you have even a light love or desire for any amazing Polish foods in Chicago, GO TO KUROWSKI's! When I first moved in, I spent 20 bucks and walked out with 4 bags of groceries, fresh produce, meats, a pierogi/dumpling assortments, and some AMAZING sausage. All my friends did that entire weekend was bust out a pocket knife and took hunks. I also suggest asking for "POLISH DELIGHT" cheese. It's the Polish equivalent of that Mexican Queso cheese but with a little more creaminess and not as salty. Don't forget to get a FRESH LOAF of rye while yer at it. This place is as good as it gets for your Chicago-dollar. Oh hey, you want to have some secret BBQ that will melt faces? Take some time to learn a little bit of Polish online or find somebody to help you. Get some of the straight polish sausage and char-grill that shit up. Serve on a kaiser bun with caramelized onions brewed in beer. I grilled the remainder of my sausage (mid winter YEAH-a-YEAH) and had a feast and a half. JUST OUTSTANDING flavor. REMEMBER: Their sausages have a shelf life of only so many days so make sure you only buy what you are going to eat. Don't go that frozen route either, that's just bad form. read more
