I love middle eastern and often do a Mezza table at my Parties. Sanabel is my main source of interesting and delicious middle eastern specialties. They make many kinds of fresh baked breads, so if you have a particular favorite, they likely have it: Pita (white and whole wheat), samoon, Taboun and more. Also Pies (zatar, cheese, spinach and ground beef). the Taboun bread sells out quickly. I also buy romanian and turkish feta here. You will see their Pita bread in local supermarkets. Staff is very friendly and will answer questions and help with selecting items.

Horrible all around rude guy at the register is so busy chatting w his friends making it a hang out . The manager or who ever he is emad is nasty rude and has no idea what he's doing . Horrible run place so dirty inside I don't know how the city lets this place stay open

Sanabel Bakery is a must stop shop if you are in the area and want some fresh baked Middle Eastern goods, sweets, or something to grill. Their pitas are baked daily and shipped to a ton of stores and restaurants in the Chicagoland area. The za'atar bread, spinach and cheese and meat pies, minced lamb breads, homemade hummus and baba ganoush, a variety of baclava are all fresh and made in house. They also have imported olives, oils, chocolate, spices in bulk, cheeses you can't find anywhere else, and a bunch of teas. They even have kitchen equipment, fancy tea sets, hookahs, tobacco, and engraved knives for sale. If you are looking for lunch they have chicken, beef, and lamb kabobs to go and all the freshly baked goods as well. On this strip of Kimball parking is a bitch, but no worries they have their own private parking lot adjacent to the store.

Sanabel, what the hell? Let's ring the bel (s). 12 fresh baked pitas for a buck! Lots of cool Medi treats so what the fck! Well for one thing. I don't know what some of those bitchin treats & spreads are since the employees are lackadaisical at best and there's a language barrier. Not a huge issue but I'd like to be able to know or be directed. Second. The smoking. Yes. The staff openly smokes in the store. That's not cool IMHO. If I'm not allowed have a ciggy at Jewel or even in a ~bar~ why can employees at a grocery/bakery puff away in everyone's faces? Getting back to the language barrier, blasé attitudes, and not giving-giving-a-sht-itis of the place I had been informed by various staff different things regarding bringing my yorkie George inside. From it being ok. To grunting and pointing at the door (does that mean take him outside or tying him to the handle?). The last time an old guy puffing away and a young dude got in a fight over him and where he should be. I don't need the drama, I recap soap operas. I like pitas, I like mom and pop joints, but I don't like PITAs. George already grunts and growls. Maybe I'll teach him to smoke and then he will be welcome and maybe even hired as future "Employee of the Year."

Excellent pita bread. The whole wheat pita is very good for pizza crust. Pete's carries it.

It is within walking distance, which is a plus, though I do watch the prices and go to Mariano's or Jewel when they offer more for less. EVERYONE at the meat/cheese counter is great, and friendly. They really do know their stuff, though at times, I wish they had a ticketed numbered system. It would prevent me from going off on some of the older Eastern Euro clientele when they try to butt in line. NOT happening! The cashiers are efficient, though there is a tall male one that is new to me. Feels like his name should be Draco. Would almost pass for AI, due to his height an personality, though AI can be programmed to be charming and efficient. He literally saw me put down items on the belt and looked like he was confused as to what his role was, then asked me if I wanted a bag for all my purchases, despite it being obvious that I had none with me. I had to get snippy, because, well, I had to get snippy. Oprah did mention them in one of her shows, so they got "trendy" afterwards, but as other reviewers have said, they do carry items that you would find more at a Treasure Island than a Jewel, Aldi, or Mariano's. They are good for that. Now, if they would only work on their AI cashiers and make them more personable, then I would give them a five star rating. Especially since peeps in the hood voted down Amazon from taking over and planting seeds on the corner of Western and Lawrence, to take over the grocery store market.

It's a pretty standard small grocery store, with a few things that may be hard to find elsewhere. They have some international brands, although the Mexican grocery store farther west on Lawrence (Lindo Michigan) is a better bet for Central American things. They sell some local brands, including freshly-roasted coffee from Brü Coffeeworks, also on Lawrence. Prices are a smidge higher than you might find elsewhere, but at least they're consistent and don't require you to download an app or join a frequent shopper club or whatever. I do wish they would stay open a little later. The staff are helpful, and they have a good selection of spices and seasonings. I wasn't able to find caraway seed elsewhere, for some reason, but when I asked a staff member if they had any, he immediately took me to the exact spot on the shelf where they had it in two different container sizes.

After reviewing Google, we found out they have sashimi platter deals Wednesdays and Fridays for just $30. Given that sushi prices in Chicago are at a premium, we opted to go for this deal and make our own sushi at home. It was awesome: salmon, tuna, and around three other types of fish served on top of julienned radish. They gave pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce as well but only one of each. (I would pick up more in store, along with nori and rice vinegar if you want to make rolls). I imagine using this fish for a poke bowl would be fantastic. The platters are a first come first serve item, so be aware of this should you want to get it like we did. We honestly didn't have any issues purchasing on a Friday.

The tiny store is packed, but the produce and seafood are as fresh as they can be. We stopped by the snack corner in the back for a quick lunch on our way to the airport. For only $12 I got a massive bowl of sullongtang packed with cuts of beef that never seemed to end. At its price point I was expecting to get a bowl of just broth, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was packed with protein. The side dishes were crunchy and tasty. Even though I was devouring my food, I ended up not being able to finish the mountain of rice they gave me. I highly recommend coming to do your shopping on an empty stomach so you can fill up on a delicious and affordable meal in the back first! Even though we were very full, we still wanted to try the mandu stand in the front of the store. We picked up some steamed pork buns and red bean buns on our way out. The pork buns had a milder/lighter seasoning so they would go really well with a spicy or salty sauce. I liked how the red bean buns were not too sweet. Both buns were hefty and could be a meal on their own.

The grocery store is huge and has a variety of Middle Eastern and Turkish goods. I bought several cheeses, from Kashkaval to Halloumi and most importantly my Labne! The meat looked extremely fresh, but I wasn't going to risk dragging it on the train with me all the way back to downtown, but I'll definitely keep that in mind if I drive back there. The isles are organized and neat. There's also a mini bakery in the store and it has delicious sweets and lots and lots of fresh bread. They also have the famous Middle Eastern Mankushe (thyme and cheese flavors)! I wanted to buy so many more things but there's only so much I can carry with me. The employees were super helpful and helped find a few things I needed. The only reason why I am giving 4 stars is because there were some expired items in the fridge, but nothing that drastic!
