The day I brought my car to him, it was raining so he suggested we not try top speeds in the rain and asked if I could leave the car with him. The next day he text me immediately to update me on the condition of the car and what needed to be done. One issue was the front tires needed replacing (they don't do tires) so he gave me recommendations on where to get cost effective replacements and advised me on other possible replacements. When I inquired around what could wait vs. immediate needs he was transparent and told me what was a now fix even if it didn't put money in his pocket (like the tires). I'd definitely trust him with any future work. He seems to care more about your safety than just making a buck. Never tried to upsell me on anything and explained each step. Transparent. Ethical. Fair pricing.

HOWEVER - last week, I brought the car in because we had driven over a massive pothole and a) had some weird front-end alignment/rattling issue and b) the check engine light had come on (codes indicated cat converter and/or O2 sensor). They cleared the code and assured me everything would be fine for the 2-week trip to upstate NY I had planned next week. A few days later, I was stopped by a concerned auto mechanic who had noticed my front passanger wheel was "wobbling". We took a look and determined that the front lower control arm bushing was damaged/loose. He tightened things up (temp fix I presume) and declared that "Ray Charles could've spotted that problem. How had my mechanic missed it!!" I have the same question. Fast forward to last night and I'm on the beltway and can't accelerate over about 40mph... check engine light is back on with a code for the cat. Clearly NOT ok as Lains had stated. I went back to Lains to confront them about these things they appear to have missed and was told - "sorry - we don't have any time to fit you in before the holiday". Needless to say, I took the car somewhere else to get properly repaired before my trip. I hope Lains continues to be "busy" with their other customers who they haven't p*ssed off... I personally plan to take some of the burden off them by no longer being one of those customers. Caveat emptor! --a disappointed former customer p.s. I will add that Brian has always been great. I was told he was "out of the country" so I couldn't speak to him about this issue. There appeared to be a lack of internal communication, which created confusion and unnecessary complications during a time-sensitive situation. We initially brought in our vehicle and received guidance from one of the mechanics on how to proceed. When we returned at a later time to pick up the vehicle, we encountered a different staff member who was unprofessional and released the vehicle without providing a quote for the recommended services. Subsequently, another staff member took an approach that directly contradicted the original plan discussed, which ultimately made things more expensive and confusing. When we returned once again, we were given a paper quote that was significantly higher--by several thousand dollars--than what was originally communicated via text. Due to the inconsistency, poor communication, and overall frustration, we chose not to move forward with their services. It was a costly and stressful experience, and we would not recommend this shop to others.

I just get routine maintenance and checkups. What I will say is they *do not* overcharge or invent unnecessary work. Even when I specifically ask for something (e.g. changing the brake pads) they will often look at it, call me, and tell me the work's not necessary. That's integrity for you!
