Wrench master! When my engine started shuddering, I checked Yelp for nearby repairs. I put in a request on their website and got an appointment the next morning. Hoffmaster's is a bit of a hidden gem, there's a sign on Tech Road ,but you have to go around to the lower level on the left. Although I had chosen partly on the basis of proximity, they combined the road test with dropping me at home, about a mile away. My guess about a misfiring cylinder was correct, but the cause was unusual. Seems a mouse had made a nest on my warm engine and gnawed through the wires! So they picked me up a few hours later, all done. Quick, right, and reasonably priced. I really felt like I was treated like a person rather than a source of funds. Satisfied new customer. I am a retired auto parts regional sales manager. I've been in over 1,400 auto repair shops in my career. There's a huge difference in quality of repair shops. I met Steve Hoffmaster when he owned Colesville Amoco over 30 years ago. He was a great customer, but I never used him personally and took my car to a different shop further away. Recently, after that shop installed new tires on my SUV, I still noticed a vibration at highway speeds. Since I had already replaced a lower control arm years ago, and the problem felt the same, I figured I needed another one. Rather than take the journey to my normal shop, I decided to give Steve a try. After inspecting my suspension, Steve discovered that my control arm was good, but my normal shop had mis-balanced 3 out of the 4 new tires they installed. Instead of the expected $400 - $500 repair, Steve was able to balance and rotate all four tires and my SUV is driving vibration free again at a fraction of the expected cost. Due to my experience, I get many requests from friends and family on where to take their vehicles for repair. I tell them to judge shops based on three criteria: 1 - must be competent - with correct tools and equipment. 2 - must have high ethics - must trust that they will not rip you off. - 3 - must be reasonably priced - not the lowest guy in town - but reasonable. A shop that puts customers first. I wound up here from a quick google search, since I was near the MVA. The prior owner of the vehicle I was driving had decided to snap the head of the license plate bolt off to take off the license plate, resulting in a bolt shaft that needed to be drilled out. I wound up coming here, and was greeted by the owner of the shop, Steve, with a friendly face and a willingness to help. He quickly took care of the issue, and was incredibly professional throughout the whole process. While he was working, I went inside and had a great conversation with Mike about other issues with the vehicle. I asked for a quote to have front struts done on the car, and he gave a great price. Steve and his guys are the best! Unfortunately my 2016 Suburban needed a transmission and a compressor for the rear shocks. Clearly not what I wanted to hear at 60K miles. However, they had me back on the road in one week and everything is perfect. They were the third shop that had looked at the problem, but the only one that provided a proper diagnosis. Short update - Shortly after the oil and transmission fluid change (about a week), my car decided to start having issues suddenly - check engine light on and all. It was also driving oddly, which is a huge problem as I commute from Silver Spring to Baltimore daily. We called them and they said they would give it a look. The diagnostics said it was an issue with an ignition coil - two of them in fact. I hadn't planned to be back at the shop so soon and was scared both for cost and time - as this is our only vehicle at the moment. I even told them so much on the phone. They had the coils replaced within a few hours for under $500. I cannot believe it! I am definitely happy with the service. They also let me keep the broken ignition coil... which is in two pieces (but shouldn't be). read more

Wow, I'm shocked I haven't reviewed this place yet. They're a family auto mechanic shop semi-hidden off of Tech Rd. I'm here for everything from oil changes, battery replacements, brakes, etc. Steve, the owner, is the bomb. I love that they're locally owned (36 years!!!), very professional, very efficient, and reasonably priced. They also do a great job of getting you in quickly for maintenance repairs and their turnaround for even emergencies are fast. Always dependable. Thanks, Hoffmaster team!! They're walking distance from my house so if I'm going for a longer repair, i can visit the potbelly & panera down the street. Their waiting area is also very comfy, clean, and has wifi so I usually end up just doing work there. Tips: on left hand side off tech road (see pics). I had got my front brake pads and rotors replaced here, then had to come back because I had the same issue and they replaced them again (for free) in 2018. It was free because they said they just happened to have gotten bad rotors last time. I started having the same issues earlier this year and decided to go to another shop. They told me my front pads and rotors were in bad condition and needed to be replaced. So in two years, I had to get them replaced. Mind you I averaged about 8,000 miles per year at the time and you'll have to take my word that I am not an aggressive driver. This place simply does bad work. They are very kind and had wonderful reviews and that is why i recommended my sister to come here too but she ended up having similar issues. Neither of us will ever return. It is unfortunate that Murray's Auto Clinic nearby had to close due to Covid, otherwise I would recommend them. read more

I cant speak to the quality of their actual repairs, but do not take your car here for your initial safety inspection if you bought a car out of state or recently moved to Maryland. While some of the issues they flagged with my car were legitimate, others were dishonest. They went out of their way to identify tons of "defects", many of which were either cosmetic, and not required by the state of Maryland, or "defects" that they simply lied about in order to then jack up the quote to repair my vehicle. My battery was rundown by my hazard lights running all night. Why they were turned on is too long a story. In any event I took the battery to Hoffmaster's and asked them to charge it up. They had it fully charged in 4 hours and would not take a penny from me for the service. I first started coming to hodfmastera in 2013. I have always dealt with steve up until the last couple of years. I have always had an inexpensive car until recently. I purchased a used cadillac and the power ateering went out. I dropped it off and was told that it was wet under the hood so that had to dry it out tp see where it was leaking They also told me that it was making a noise and that they thought it was the transmission.. They called me back and told me the problem and estimate. They said it would take them 4 hours to fix replace the hose and i said that i would have to bring back to get it fixed He asked me if i just wantwd to leave it there sitting for a couple of days. I said no i need my car. He said that they would have to put it back together and it takes about a half of an hour so he will charge me for that and when i bring it back they would just charge me for 3 and a half hours We picked up the car and it sounds horrible It was reletively quiet when i dropped ir off. This noise can be heard over the radio. Big difference. I callwd back when i got home and he denied telliing me that they did any labor on it. I am not one to argue so i just told him he just lost a customer. So do not believe anything that they tell you. I called around and foundout that it is a two hour job read more

Just to set the record straight, Hoffmasters eventually refunded my money for the second clutch repair, and as per my review update below I never paid for the third clutch. So, I only ended up paying for one clutch, even though they installed three. Since my car is a very old VW and has since had an engine replacement by another mechanic which in itself had problems, I can believe that the entire clutch issue may have been due to the fact that they used an aftermarket clutch the first two times and my VW was more particular than usual. At any rate, since they eventually did stand behind thier work, I am raising my rating to four stars. read more

This is my first review, just got off the phone with someone who's tone, I felt was somewhat rude, and because of the great reviews, I had wanted to take my shot at this experience but, unfortunately, I could not get beyond the phone conversation. I asked the person who answered if they could check my car out to ensure it was running good because my lady drives it. He asked me "what's wrong with it?" I don't understand how I would know that but, I tried my best to describe what I may think is wrong however, it still works and I figured they would tell me the recommendations. I asked if I had to make an appointment. I was told by him that I needed to drop the vehicle off. I then tried my chances at the possibility of him looking at the vehicle today and his reply was" it's 330 on a Tuesday, and you would have to drop the vehicle off so we can look at it and, I will not be able to look at it until Thursday". I thought it would make sense to pick a time on Thursday, I asked for a good time for him to look at it. His response was classic he went on to say "you need to drop it off today" I politely hung up afterwards refraining from saying anything rude and disrespectful to him because I was amazed at the poor customer service. I'm leaving a one star because first impressions are important to me and at least the phone number worked. Yuck! I'll try my luck at one of the other highly reviewed Yelp peer reviewed companies. read more

great service, I have gone to them for oil changes and then had them letting me know things like I had a turn signal out?! i guess they checked over it which I hadnt asked for but really appreciated it, and they only charged me for the bulb no "labor" charges, thanks! The guy at the front desk is quite knowledgeable if not a bit talkative and they are happy to recommend someone else if its something they dont/cant do which is also appreciated. I also used them for my DMV checkup thingy, the turn around was like an hour, nice. will be going there again when my car needs anything. read more

I was a customer of Steve's, way back in the late 80's and early 90's, when he was at Colesville Amoco. His cousin was my next door neighbor. I moved away in 96; otherwise I'd still be a customer. I really liked working with him - he did good work, was reasonably priced, but most of all, I didn't have to worry about him being dishonest and ripping me off, which was especially important since I came to Maryland not knowing anyone. I needed a headlight bulb to be replaced. It was tricky with my car, but they still did it and didn't charge me extra, and was still about $30 cheaper than every place around. They also cleaned my windows while at it! The place is hidden in the lane, but the staff is super nice and welcoming and they did a great job as well! Definitely my go to car stop now! read more

Absolutely agree with the other reviews. They've treated us (myself and my wife) very well the times we've had need of their services, and we've never felt jerked around or pushed to pay for extra work. They've always carefully explained what needed to happen, what the options were, and what costs would be, and we've always had good results from going with them. Most recent example: I got a quote for nearly a thousand dollars worth of "oh, we noticed that..." work from a place I was getting an oil change from; took the car here and while there was some work that needed to happen, they were able to get isolate it to just one part of the system and saved me close to $500. It is a bit strange to find the first time, but basically the building is built into sort of a hill and Hoffmaster's is the bottom level. You have to enter the parking area and go left and down; it makes more sense once you see it in person than in writing probably. If I remember right the top level of the building is a printing shop or something of that nature. read more

So my mom's car is not acting right well in this case not indicating a right directional turn signal when activated by the user interface. There's no right blinker. Not the bulb something else hidden within. She found a coupon for this place in the mail or paper. I never had heard of them. So early in the morning through traffic I went and got mom's car and took it to the shop for her, like any good son would do. This place is a little hard to find at first, sort of to the side in an industrial park full of repair shops warehouses and other industrial businesses. Right across the street from Dar Cars Collision building. down a steep hill at a weird angle and you're in. This place is way bigger inside they what is visible on the outside. We greeted one of the people there yeah I had my brother with me anticipating the need to leave it for several days. Right away they got to looking at it and in no time flat the mechanic had identify the problem and knew exactly what was needed to fix the problem. Only thing is mom's car is Old with a capital O. A 1989 pristine condition Chrysler New Yorker yeah I know I keep trying to encourage her to get a new car. I'll buy a new one for you mom! But she loves that car. Anyway it needs a part that they don't make anymore. That is the real challenge if they can't find the electrical part for it they can rig one up. Wow! and the cost for all of this isn't that bad. Double wow! Not trying to rip me off, a good sign. Another thing is that these guys are real car people with a enthusiastic passion for automobiles. The couple of them that I was dealing with have old antique cars and they love talking about buying them, restoring them, driving them and collecting them or selling them. I took my 2002 Volkswagen here to get a burnt-out headlight replaced. The clerk was dour but efficient, the lounge clean and comfortable, and the coffee was good. Mr. Hoffmaster was personable and polite, fixed the headlight with no charge for labor, and I was out of there twenty minutes after pulling in. He even lubed up my door free of charge because it squeaked when I opened it. read more
