Rising Sun Motors USED to be a great place, very efficient and competent, until the new ownership in 2024. Now they are the bottom of the heap. Stay away. They had my car ALL DAY (8am - 5pm) and couldn't even get around to looking at it to diagnose anything -- so it had to stay overnight. I thought this was a fluke when it happened a few months ago; I gave them the benefit of the doubt -- but it happened AGAIN today. So, purely because of their poor workflow management, I'm having to rearrange my family's transportation for an extra day -- or perhaps a THIRD day, if [heaven forbid] they have to order any replacement parts once they actually look at the car. read more

Unprofessional and dishonest! I went to rising run motors to have 2 tires mounted. They mounted one of them inside out, and I only found about that 2 months later when I took them off because I decided to sell the wheels. I took the wheel with the inside out tire to rising sun motors, and they agreed to fix that. However, they left a lot of nasty chips, dents, and scratches on the rim. As soon as my car's warranty expired (no, I did not answer the 2,500 messages in my phone and mail about "we want to talk to you about an extended warranty"! haha).. I needed to find a spot that was closeby and DID NOT CHARGE MUCH FOR EXCELLENT WORK. The dealership told me that they would "gladly" do X,Y and Z but that "it would have to come at a larger price now". So, I told them to hold that thought and I would let them know. Well, I did let them know I found a place I decided to stick with, Rising Sun Motors. There was a time period where I LEGIT had to fix like 3 things in a row. Would have cost me well over 1,800 (close to 2 grand) at the dealership... here, everything for $850/900 max. For ALL of it. On top of this, they gave me gift cards for a free oil change and other discounts for future work. NO other place takes care of their customers like this. Mind you, they also provide customers with a FREE uber home and back (within reasonable area of closeness to the shop. I am 3 minutes away (via car).. but, it still means a lot that they think about their customers and their time constraints (for instance, I work from home some days and I was easily able to get the car in and have the uber get me back home by sign on time.. never any issues with that, either). I have a 2017 Buick Verano (for those wondering what genre of cars they work on) but, they work on a LARGE array of cars, years, etc. They treat everyone like a PERSON and not a number. Also, there is a cute shop dog who loves everyone. :) If you need a place to go that will get you honesty, good work and will not break the bank... look no further than Rising Sun!! :) read more

Overpriced and tried to up-sell me on maintenance work that I didn't need or request. I took my car in to repair a clogged sunroof drain. They charged me $151 for diagnostic testing that I did not request and then suggested that I pay $855 for 30,000 mile maintenance and pay another $151 to pinpoint the source of a suspected oil leak. I declined all of the up-sell items and paid the $151 which was a high price to pay for about 1/2 hour of service. They also left a rubber cylinder cover on top of my engine rather then reinstalling it. read more

Giving 5-stars for my review of Rising Sun Motors. My client's 1983 280zx was at their shop for about 6 months getting mechanically restored. Their communication was great, the work great, and I enjoyed working with Jeff the service advisor. How you know they're a great trustworthy shop besides what I already said is they gave us an initial estimate, then told us later it wasn't needed and we could skip a particular service because it wasn't needed. We've been using Rising Sun for the last 5 years or so. They have helped us out with everything from routine maintenance to weird electrical bugs to installing a catalytic converter shield. Jeff and the whole team are always super friendly and helpful. They communicate clearly what they find, what it will costs, and what needs to be done now versus what can wait. I went to this place with a check engine light on and noise coming out of my engine bay. I asked for an appointment online and waited for about a week without an answer until I received a text message asking me to bring the car the next day to the shop. After they gave it a look, they called back to tell me that a sensor wiring next to the radiator was broken and it would cost $350, including diagnostics and fees. As for the noise, they were not sure and wanted to keep the car overnight. The next day, they called back and offered a list of "possible" fixes that summed to about $2500. As a side note, my car has a trade-in value of about $4000. I declined the extra services and picked my car up a few hours later. The very same evening, immediately after leaving the shop, I went directly to my workplace. A few hours later, I am going to the garage to leave to see a pretty big puddle of reddish fluid coming out of my car! I open the hood to see the coolant reservoir being almost empty! The next morning, I called them to report the issue and they responded that it is "probably not related to the work done" and "you can drop off the vehicle but we might not be able to look at it until Wednesday" (it was Friday afternoon!). Honestly, I know this might just be bad luck, but I don't appreciate the fact that they refused to give a quick 10-minute check to the work that they did the other day promptly. A true professional can't expect that a customer who paid a premium will be happy to drop off their car for a week, especially when other competing places are offering appointments early morning that Monday. For me, that place is a no. I don't see a reason to pay the dealership-level prices when you don't get a premium treatment. I would rather go to my car dealer for that cost. Pros: - They offer free rides. - Their online system for quotes is nice. Cons: - Their online system for appointment booking is horrible. - Prices are as high as it gets. Expect to pay dealership-level prices. - The service is not comparable to your dealership. - If anything is wrong with the work done, then good luck. Expect to be carless for a week. read more

Avoid at all costs !!! This was the third time we've had our car in there - the first two times were without issue, good work, fair price. This 3rd time they tried to tack on incredible amounts of needless repairs and when they took the test drive they it seemed they were trying to break my son's car on purpose !!! Driving it VERY erratically and jamming on the brakes...insane !!! He watched it all helplessly. WHAT AN ASS !!!! I called to schedule a time to bring my car by to deal with some issues. I wasn't able to find a time the week of, but was able to get in the following week. The whole experience is how I wish all experiences at auto repair shops would go. Rising Sun Motors has a system in place where they text you with a detailed summary of what needs to be addressed, a breakdown of the projected costs, and a request for you to approve/deny the work that needs to be done. I was thrilled that the team worked quickly and got my car back to me with all issues resolved. Not only can you rely on quality service, the team is also incredibly responsive. Jeff texted me directly with updates and followed up after I got my car back to make sure everything was in order. Yet another great perk of Rising Sun Motors is their coded lockbox system where they give you a private code to an external lockbox and you can pick up your keys 24/7. Which is great for folks who have to come after work or at odd hours. Overall, I was impressed and I think you can't go wrong bringing your vehicle here. This place use to be good, but something has changed. I took my car there to fix the AC and a shake in the suspension while breaking. They didn't fix the suspension (they said they didn't notice it but didn't allow me to show them when I offered). And the AC blew up a couple days later, causing smoke, smell, and a huge mess. When I took it back to have them fix it, they tried to charge me $170+. When I asked why there is a charge, the manager Jeff started cussing at me, calling my question "bullshit." I started taking my car to Rising Sun years ago when they were in an industrial park well hidden from the public view and specialized in Japanese cars. Now, they're on the main drag and take care of anything with wheels and a motor. A couple of people have been there a long time and even remembered me after I had been away for a long time. They're friendly and they have a shuttle service to take you to nearby places if your car needs to stay. My only beef is that they tend to be a little pricey. However, they do a good job and stand behind their work. They also have this thing where they "overestimate" your costs so that when it comes time to pick up your car and the actual price is less than the estimate, you're pleasantly surprised. All in all, their a good place to have your car serviced and you don't have to worry (too much) about a lot of add-ons or up-sells. read more

My rating is purely for a vehicle inspection and small repairs. I brought my vehicle at 8am for a vehicle inspection and was out by 10a.m. they have snacks, coffee, a TV, and good wireless internet. They were very friendly, quick, and didn't try to make me repair anything that didn't need it. Also, inspection was only 65$ which was a few bucks cheaper than other places. read more

I live only .7 miles away from this place. I walk past it on the way to my bus stop. I called because I had a flat tire sitting in my driveway and a broken jack. I was told "We don't do road side assistance." I tried to explain that I live a stones throw away, and at best just needed help getting my car to them -- but was interrupted and told to "Call AAA." Which, of course I would have done if I had AAA. I just moved here from out of state. Before that this car had never seen another mechanic -- guess I'll take my lifelong business to someone who cares. Was going to get a new tire, an oil change and ask about fixing a strut. My experience here has been nothing short of TERRIBLE. Took my car to get inspected, $800 to change my front head light assembly (my boyfriend and I ordered headlights online for $100 and he installed them hisself), $95 for changing my front bulbs and $60 for windshield wiper blades (which we bought at an auto shop for $20 and did ourself). If we took care of everything ourself and brought the car back for re-inspection, I was told it will be an additional $45. The ultimate b.s. was when I get to MVA. Rising Son Motors had the incorrect VIN/Title number on their records and the document I needed to get my MD registration. I had to leave MVA and go back to this shitty shop, all while it took 20 minutes for him to write out a new inspection certificate....WITH AN ATTITUDE. *I ONLY GAVE THIS ONE STAR BECAUSE I HAD TO CHOOSE ATLEAST ONE IN ORDER FOR ME TO SUBMIT THIS POST* I will NEVER take my car here again. Very good service, but as Ken M. says (and their website is very defensive about this) you definitely pay higher prices than typical places. However, the mechanics are definitely more knowledgeable than average. I would say "you get what you pay for," but I don't think that's entirely true here. For specialty work, you should go to a place like this if you have a JAPANESE-made car (this is their specialty). For other typical services, I would advise against going there. They charge $40 for an oil change and something like $150-200 to replace a battery. Those things can be done cheaper elsewhere or at home, for sure. read more

Being new to the area, I pretty much only had verbal recommendations to go off of. This one absolutely did not disappoint. The staff were friendly, courteous, honest, fair, and I didn't get the impression at all that they were hoping to take advantage of me as someone who knows next to nothing about cars. I've taken my car here for 4 different repairs over 2 years, and it keeps getting worse and worse. I must say that the guys here are nice, and not pushy. But sadly, that doesn't mean they aren't totally ripping you off. The main problem is this: I have had several experiences with poor work that required me to take the car in for additional repairs, some of which they charged me for (!!) and some of which they didn't -- but either way, I don't have time to be taking my car in multiple times for a repair. I'm a busy person and I expect it to be done right the first time. Especially for what they're charging here. The prices are completely outrageous. For example, I was quoted $55 to replace a headlight bulb, which Jiffy Lube replaced for $25. (and the bulb only costs $10 retail if you DIY). Everything else I've been quoted here has been absurdly overpriced - tires, oil change, headlight cleaning, you name it. They wanted $700+ to replace my tires - I had it done elsewhere for $400 with top of the line tires. They charge between $60 and $200 to diagnose check engine lights. News flash: you can take your car to Autozone and they will read your diagnostic codes FOR FREE. They also have gimmicky $20 coupons that they give you to entice you to come back, and to refer new customers. But you'll notice they also tack on a mysterious "supplies" surcharge to every bill, which roughly equals the number of coupons they give you. Hmmm...... They really push referrals, and pay you if you refer new customers. It seems to me that if they did good enough work for a decent price, that wouldn't be necessary. Recommendations are powerful - I was referred this way and it took me a long time to realize what was going on, because I really trusted my friends' recommendation. I think a lot of other people are probably in the same boat, just blindly trusting on the word of a friend, and not able to see what's going on. read more

So, here goes: Now, I may be wrong, but $100 just to remove a door panel and peek inside (without doing any actual work) is ridiculous and immoral. Price gouging at best. Yet that's the price I was recently quoted at this place when I came in because my window was stuck. Mind you, the $100 is in addition to whatever it would cost to get it fixed. SMH. Needless to say, I was outta there like a baby born yesterday and ventured to a more ethical repair shop where fairness outweighs greed if only by a little. As I'm accustomed to giving folks the benefit of the doubt, I've come up with a few reasons why this person quoted me 100 DOLLARS to look at a door: 1) Perhaps the gentleman at Rising Sun was joking when he quoted me that insane price, and I walked out before he could yell, "SIKE!" 2) Perhaps their lights were about to go off due to bill non payment and I was the hapless shmuck they chose to provide the last Benjamin they would need to avoid impending darkness. 3) Perhaps $100 is a fair price and I am La Cheapa. I must say I doubt this last theory because I've never got charged more than $60 for any type of diagnostic. And even then, they comped it when I got my car repaired there (I'd only have to pay the $60 if I got it repaired elsewhere). This was just my experience. Hope yours goes A LOT better. read more

I've taken my car to Rising Sun just the one time so far. Very friendly, professional, and helpful staff. Clear communication regarding recommended repair. They offer some of the perks of a dealership (coffee in the waiting room with plenty of seating, free shuttle drop off and pickup), but without the inflated prices and double talk. I'm from Florida had some major issues with my car and was told to bring it to Rising Sun by my brother who's had his car repaired here several times and been happy. Went to rising Sun to install tires I bought from tire rack, the installation was slightly more expensive due to the tpms system our vehicle had. Prices that tire rack reported were fair, but the service was excellent. Greg was very helpful calling and giving me updates about the car, they did a free inspection for our car. They replaced tpms bad sensors, I myself noticed they were bad but was hoping they didn't have an issue. They replaced them with oem sensors that cost a total of 175, looked online saw them much cheaper. I called them out on it, they said not to trust them. Looked online, and see that they were right. Cars drives feast now with the new tires and alignment. Would recommend them! read more

Since I cannot edit my original review and reply to the Owner of Rising Sun Motors, I am putting there comment on the bottom of this and I will add my comment. Michael I had done so much more work to the car before this girl called, I would have had to up the cost anyway. I bought this car to replace a 2003 Forester and not to FLIP like you may think. I even told her this and that I had the fender replaced and had both sides repaired and painted and if I sold it I would need time to find a new car and also that I was taking it to Florida for Christmas the following week. Also because of your Eek assessment, I took it back to the inspection station to have what you said was an issue and they nor me herd a bearing noise anywhere and as I said, I used to rebuild automatic Transmissions years ago and I think I am qualified to hear a bearing noise in a drive train. I cant say the same for you. Than you told her water damage because of the smell. That was New Sheep Skin seat covers I put on the day before. They had a strong Oder and I thought our dog was going to eat them when still in the package because they smelled like dog chews. The front R fender was buckled which was in the add, but had not changed the add but told the girl. It had a lot of dings along each side, so I had both sides repaired and painted which I told you and her. I added the trailer hitch, better lighting and many other items no one would add if "FLIPPING" the car. If you really looked at the car you would have noticed the hitch was NEW, but I pull a trailer and had it put on because I was fixing the car up for me but after putting so much in the car, I figured if I can get most of my money back, I may as well buy a new one. I actually put the 2003 and this one up for sale. The 2003 had less miles than this one, and my wife bought it new, but it sold first. I did not care which one I sold first, I figured I would sell one and either keep the other or buy a new one. I would not sell a car with an issue which is why I had the 03 Check engine light issue repaired before I sold it. I had it at the dealer twice for that but they could never find the issue, so I took it to the same inspection station. He figured it out in less than an hour and I paid 600.00 for that issue. As for the clutch, I had a heavy duty clutch system put in this because of the trailer and it is hard to get used to. At least I have the receipts that prove the new clutch was installed and the rest. Well I put 2500 plus hard miles on it going to Florida, so I guess you should change profession as a physic. No issues and doing 80 MPH down and back. As far as Subaru goes, I actually hate the damn thing, but it is the only one left with a stick and that HP that I can find and I need the space in the back for the dog and the hp for the trailer. Knowing transmissions, I would not buy a Variable automatic. I also put the Vin# in the add and carfax was clean. To you the NEW trailer hitch was your give away I was FLIPPING the car. What an idiot. I see what your reputation is and it's not good. Michael W.
