I stopped by here after doing some shopping at Assi because I wanted to try their halo halo. The man who helped me asked if I wanted the special or the regular. I asked him what the difference was and he said, "the special has more." Um ok, that totally didn't sell it for me so I went with the regular. He rang me up and charged me $4.99. I asked him why he charged me $4.99 when the sign clearly states that it's only $3.99. He explained that it cost more because I got my order to go and the to go cups are apparently bigger than the cups that they use if I were to dine in. If that were the case, they should have a sign up stating that. I would've just cancelled my order but I wanted to try the halo halo. I waited approximately 10 minutes for my dessert which is a really long time considering they weren't busy at all and it's not like you have to cook halo halo. When my order was ready, no one even notified me that it was ready. They just placed it on the counter and said nothing. I walked up to the counter and found a teenage kid playing on his phone and had to ask him if the halo halo was mine. The halo halo was tasty but had way too much ice in my opinion. They cook to order so service is slow--so I was patient. The second time I came, I kept ringing the bell (and you can hear them in the back as well as the fact that there is a camera right there in your face) but after 15 mins, no one came to take my order. I had enough time to arrive, walk away, go order food from another counter, come back, walk away and then go pick up my food. THEN I finally see someone come to the counter and look around. I'm rating this 3 stars because I thought the food I got was good, but it wasn't anything special. Location: The restaurant is located within Assi Plaza which is a large supermarket that sells a significant variety of ethnic foods and ingredients from Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Indian, Spanish, etc. The restaurant itself is in the food court section and does not have any special seating or anything. Service: Unfortunately the service I experienced was not very good. Additionally, the food took a really long time to come out (around 20-25 min), and I was there at lunchtime on a Saturday. Food: The pancit was yummy as well as the lumpia, but I didn't enjoy the chicken adobo that much. Again, the food was decent but it wasn't anything special. I so love lumpia....like I'd eat it right off of the floor if I dropped a piece! So after drooling at pics online at my desk of kuya's food express, I left work and made the trip. I really wanted to love this place as I thought I've found a place to get my fix.....terribly disappointed! Maybe I went at a bad time or who knows but I think the pics will speak for themselves. I ordered the lumpia appetizer and the pork adobo to go, and didn't check the food when it was ready because I was so damn excited to get home and destroy it. Well I got home and opened it up, then had to get back on yelp to look at the pork Adobe sitting in front of me vs the delicious juicy pics online. What I was given didn't look appetizing at all, completely dry and honestly kinda looked old. I gave it a taste anyways but couldn't get past how dry it was and it just looked bad! I was devastated, I really wanted to love this place and was already planning on a weekly lumpia fix! Not anymore, I'll have to find a new place. Seeing that this was the only Filipino restaurant in Atlanta, as a Filipino-American I had to make a visit. My friend and I are recent transplants from areas where Filipino food is more common. I don't think Filipino food has really blown up yet in the food world. But I feel like it's on the brink! My friend and I were a bit...extra that day, haha. I ordered the lechon kawali (fried pork belly), sinigang ( sour tamarind soup--it was an espesyal), and bangsilong (marinated milk fish with garlic rice and egg). While my friend got crispy pata and longsilog. I sort of assumed that I would get everything in take out boxes since it was a lot of food and we were in a food court. But everything came out on plates--so make sure you specify if you want to go. Every meat entree comes with a plate of rice, so you get a lot of food for the price. The fried bangus was very crispy, but the garlic flavor of the rice was too subtle for my liking--but I looooove garlic, so I'm very biased. The lechon kawali was indeed crispy and it was served with the perfect partner: Mang Tomas (pork liver) sauce. I was a little disappointed in the sinigang soup, I feel as if they didn't cook any extra tomatoes and onions in the soup and the tamarind sourness was too mild. I think they shouldn't be afraid to up the flavors of this dish a little bit. While there, I noticed that there were a bunch of other Filipino Americans ordering food. I thought to myself, "So this is where we all hang out...." I gave this place 3 stars because it's good for when you want Filipino food but don't want to make it yourself. Don't expect your mother's cooking ('cause mama's is always best). To summarize, if you haven't had Filipino food before give this place a shot! I had the K9-Chopsuey and A1-Lumpia eggrolls. Absolutely enjoyed it! I've been to the Philippines several times and the food really brought back good memories! Ive eaten at Filipino places out west and in Dubai. Generally they are happy to see you when you walk in and there is no shortage of smiles or help. This place is just the opposite. Most of the time there is nobody tending the front as people wait. I waited good while. There is a sign items made to order so it can take time. Ok..thats good, best to tell it like it is so most people can understand. I ordered something that was not marked OUT but it was also out. It was on the special or daily board. Most of the others were already marked OUT. So I just went for chop suy as it looked like a healthier option. It was $6.99. It was 2 medium shrimp, 2 small pieces of chicken and some vegetables and a plate of rice. It was ok. Not bad but nothing to remember. I counted 10 food places in this Assi food court, and 5 of the 10 were closed. Hard to say if the 5 were just closed temporarily or for good. None of the 5 open seemed to be doing much business and its turned into a very gloomy food court which doesnt spell good fortune for those that still remain. I got a Canadian coin in change which is a minor irritation, but there is one BIG Irritation I have with this place. On their refrigerator in the public area in clear public view is a big round like 13 inch Duterte Campaign sticker. Photo posted. I think it is terrible for a restaurant, a business that has a huge failure rate, to post political support for anyone, let alone one of questionable scruples. I only presume the owners placed it there as how many memebers of the public are running around with big round Duterte stickers??? After all any Dollar Tree has a razor blade scraper kit for $1. Had I seen that before I ordered I would have turned around. I went to wikipedia to read more about him, and it said that 80% of the Filipino people support him. So maybe that brings him business but I want NO part of it. The slogan on the sticker means REAL CHANGE. You might want to google or wikipedia President Duterte yourself and make your own conclusion. "Better than Mom used to make." I used to envy friends who could make those sorts of comparisons. We'd go to some meat and three or some Chinese place or some Eye-talian joint and invariably someone would compare the food to Mommy Dearest. Me? All I could do was shrug. You see, Mom is an honest to Yaweh FOB (fresh off the boat) Filipino. (Though in this case, "fresh" means about 50 years ago and "boat" means an old DC-9 aeroplane.) Still, you know what I mean. She didn't grow up making, say, spaghetti and only learned about it when she got here in the States...in the 60s....pre-Internet. She did relatively OK over the years, despite her immigrant habit of repurposing leftover food that wasn't meant to be repurposed--ergo the "chili" made from last night's spaghetti sauce. So, in most cases, "better than Mom's" wasn't really that high a bar to set. Except now, we were in MY house. Here I was eating Filipino food from one of two Filipino eateries in Atlanta. I've been to the other (Fil-Am Star) and while I thought FAS was fine, it....um, didn't taste like my mom's. I wasn't sure why not. It wasn't until Kuya's that I figured it out. I don't think the Fil-Am Star folks come from my mom's province. That doesn't mean that what they cook is wrong. It just means it's not what I was used to. Kuya's, on the other hand, yeah, these guys could've been neighbors to my lola's hut. ("Lola," for the record, is tagalog for "Grandma." "Hut" is, well, probably a horribly racist and condescending assumption on my part since I think they actually had a house, but, hell, I also still make fun of my mom's accent too.) Lechon, pancit...they had all the greatest hits, all kind of plopped onto a plate, visuals be damned. (Yep, that's Filipino food for you.) It really did taste like my mom and aunties called me over into the kitchen and made me eat. All they needed to do was berate me for not going to med school and I would've felt right at home. Yeah, it's a food stall in a food court. It ain't fancy. But it ain't expensive either. You can try multiple dishes and find the answers to such questions as "What exactly is Filipino food?" and "Is lechon really the best roast pig on Earth?" and "Wait, is this peanut butter I taste in this Kare Kare dish?" Thanks for the memories, Kuya. If you weren't 80 bazillion miles from my house, I'd be back more often. Four and a half stars. But no, for the last time, I am NOT going to med school. read more

Pretty bad service-- the owner of the shop is totally apathetic and unfriendly, and it seems like you're bothering him by placing an order. The food seems fairly average-- it is well priced and cheap for the most part, but not very top quality. Perhaps their more authentic daily specials would be better, but I couldn't tell anything significant or outstanding about their dishes, although I am not the most well-versed in Filipino cuisine. Do not use their pictures as a reference-- their images are totally taken from somewhere else, and the actual food in no way resembles the images. Treat it like a low-end chinese restaurant for filipino food. Their halo halo was pretty disappointing considering that the image pictured something well put together with a scoop of what looked like black sesame ice cream. Disclosure: Haven't had a real meal here. I stopped by last weekend for a piece of cassava cake on the recommendation of a Filipino friend. Very good and reasonable at $2 a square, the cassava cake reminded me very much of Vietnamese banh khoai mi nuong. My qualm is with the service that I received. The cashier or whoever he was not welcoming whatsoever. But since there is a dearth of Filipino eateries, I will suck up the meanness to try the fare soon. Showing some love and support to my kababayan (countryman) This is the one and only Filipino restaurant I go to if I feel like eating my favorite Filipino food which is Kare-kare (ox meat in peanut sauce) and Lechon Kawali (crispy fried pork). They cook Filipino dishes so well and it makes me feel like home. If you haven't been here, don't be afraid to try their food. Everything is flavorful and they serve fresh. You should try their adobo (national food) and I believe you should eat every dishes with rice, except for the noodles. For dessert, try their halo-halo (mixed fruit in shaved ice) So yummy and refreshing! This is a great place for meat and rice lovers. hahaha. (Neutral) The restaurant location is inside ASSI's grocery store on the far left side entrance. The restaurant was amongst others to what appeared to be a food court. Half of the restaurants were out of business in an almost empty food court. The area, however, appeared to be very clean but worn out. (Positive +) The food selection is small but really all of the meals were a great deal ranging from $4.99 to $6.99. My date and I ordered the Pork Adobo, Pork Blood, and Filipino noodles that I cannot recall the name. (It wasn't pancit. ha) (Positive +) The food came out in a fast time, when to wash my hands at the restroom and when I came back, the food starting coming out! I loved the pork adobo that I picked but wasn't fond of the Filipino noodles and I thought the pork blood was extremely salty. My date, who is Filipino, thought the food was great though, it was like home cooking for her. This place will hit the spot if you're craving Filipino food or just home sick. The dishes available are basic dishes, but their place is a good alternative if you can't/don't feel like cooking it yourself. I ordered Menudo, Crispy Pata, and Palabok. Considering it was at a Cafeteria + the shorter time frame it had to be cooked in, I was not expecting it to be this good. For example, their Palabok was way better than Jollibee's, for a fast food comparison. Then, granted, their Crispy pata looked more on the browner than its supposed golden orange color. BUT the flavors and juiciness/fattiness were intact, to the point that it just melted in my mouth. While their closest "cafeteria" flavored dish to me would be the Menudo. However, the cafeteria I'm referring to are the ones back in the Philippines. It tasted like home. Sure they CAN up the notch when it comes to flavors. And I'm sure the chef knows it themselves. But this is catered to Georgia's majority population's taste preferences. They also in general taste better than other renowned Filipino restaurants I've been to in California.
