Erik was great from start to finish. I contacted him to rekey 6 locks due to a management change at my commercial property and his follow up is impeccable. He spent time to confirm the appointments late last week and even earlier today. To be honest I forgot about the appointment and was happy that he reminded me. I went in for a new key-less remote, a couple car key copies, and a basic house key copy. They took care of everything. There were three staff members working with different customers, nobody needed to wait, but regardless, I would have waited 30 min because this is an old-school shop where they do things right the first time and the atmosphere is great. We'd tried another locksmith who couldn't fix our old front door lock, claiming the spindle couldn't be replaced. Erik with Kwik-key had no such problem. He came within a day, took apart our "original Baldwin lock," probably from the 1930s, admired it like a watchmaker might, then with meticulous attention to detail repaired and reconditioned it. Kwik-Key Locksmiths is a real neighborhood gem. I recently lost the key to my 1984 Mercedes station wagon. After a long search, I finally bit the bullet and called Kwik-Key to see what they could do to help. I spoke with Erik, who said the process should be pretty straightforward and gave me weekday and weekend lockout rates. With an older car, unfortunately, nothing is straightforward. Erik was gracious enough to come out to help on a weekend (presumably his day off) in the freezing cold and fight with the locks on my finicky old car. Not only did my upholstery snag and break one of his tools, but there was no code on the inside of the door lock to tell him what key to cut. He ended up having to MANUALLY create a key by looking down the lock cylinder, examining the grooves, and filing away at a blank key. He was knowledgeable and friendly during this whole process and mentioned that this "old fashioned" way of cutting a key is something many new locksmiths don't know how to do. Thirty years of experience really paid off. Though this process obviously took much longer than expected, he still only charged us his original quote. I now have TWO copies of my car key, and I will be back at Kwik-Key to make 1,000 more--so I'll never be in this pickle again! read more

We just moved in to our new house in Catonsville and wanted to have a single key for the multiple doors in the house. Kwik-Key was recommended to us and they were everything promised. Made an appointment for when we were available, were there on time and had solid recommendations for revising the locks to improve our security while being able to stay with a single key. The new locks were a bit more expensive than the box stores, but a 25 yr guarantee is something the others won't offer. I called and asked if they could make a duplicate of a broken key if I had both pieces and even had my own blank. He said "bring it in and we'll see". Walking into the place, being greeted by the older gentleman working, I expected to have a very simple conversation and he'd either be able to do it or not. When he tried to explain the problem why he couldn't do it, but his son could do an impression. I said "oh I think I understand, it's like where you cut the key out of like a soft blank and..." (apparently I was wrong). He VERY rudely interrupts me talking and in an extremely condescending and rude manner proceeds to say "No. No no no you DONT understand what I'm talking about. Just stop and listen to me blah blah blah blah". I just said "look you don't have to be rude. Give me my broken key pieces and my blank and I'll take it somewhere else and get it done. There is just no reason you had to get so incredibly rude". I will never set foot in that place nor recommend it ever and I hope it gets flooded. What an extremely rude man. read more

Emailed Kwik-Key on the 11th, through Yelp, to inquire about having a home rekeyed. Erik replied and asked for a phone call to consult and give an estimate. My wife called Erik and got an estimate and we spent the day comparing different offers. I called Kwik-Key at 9am on Sunday the 12th. When I spoke to Erik he offered to rekey the home today, the 12th, or tomorrow. He was upfront that having it done today would be double his service cost because it was a weekend call. I agreed that I needed the work today and would be glad to pay. Erik said he'd be at the house by 3:00pm and was there 15 minutes early. Erik rekeyed three different entry doors, a storage shed, two storm doors, and an interior room as well as made about a dozen keys in about two hours. He offered tips on securing the home while he was there, fixed small issues he found along the way like missing or improperly installed strikes, and offered advice on some of the locks he didn't agree with. One in particular he was candid that he "does not sell, nor does he recommend." He at no time tried to use this tidbit to upsell me; he actually advised me where I could go to purchase and install my own replacement, but I asked him to handle it while he was there. He was punctual, professional and courteous the entire time ... even answering the random and odd questions my three year old daughter threw his way with a smile. I can't recommend Erik and Kwik-Key enough. Service was fast, friendly, thorough, professional, and went above what I initially requested. read more

I really have nothing against locksmiths, but damn changing locks is very expensive stuff. This particular locksmith was knowledgeable, did his work correctly and explained everything that he was doing to me in layman's terms. Quick and responsive! I needed three locks to be re-keyed and contacted Erik over the weekend for a quote and timing to get the service completed. I needed service fairly quickly but didn't need immediate service, none-the-less Erick was able to make room the following Monday morning to assist. The work was done quickly and efficiently. Erik was awesome! He came and changed out all our deadbolts and handles. He also discovered that the construction crew hadn't installed the plates in the door correctly. The door could have been kicked in easily before Erik installed a thick back plate and drilled 4 inch screws deep into the wall stud. He also installed a peep hole in our basement door. I hired Kwik-Key to rekey the locks on 2 doors to the house. The technician showed up on time and was polite-hence the 2 stars- but was not very competent. He changed the lock cylinders but then was not able to reinstall the lock onto the door. Rather than stop, he tried to force it and stripped both screws completely, then leaving a loose and non functioning lock in the door. At this point, he wanted to charge me for a new lock, rekeying the cylinders into the new lock, and additional labor to fix his mistake, in addition to the lock cylinders that were correctly done. I ended up buying a screw extractor kit and removing the ruined screws myself, then had to purchase a new lock from the hardware store to get the right length screws to seat the deadbolt myself. After this experience, I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere for locksmith services! Edit: Review updated to 4 stars. Erik (the owner?) called the next day, came over after hours, and fixed the problem at no charge, installing the rekeyed original lock correctly and replacing the screws. He also looked at another door issue and tried to resolve it. While it's a shame that my first experience happened at all, and I'm still out $60 for a screw extractor kit and lock from the hardware store, it's refreshing to see a local company go above and beyond to make things right. Based on those actions, I'd recommend them as an honest locksmith to work with. read more

Dropped by to have copies of house keys made. It was fast, cheap, and I got to choose some unique keys from their large collection. Best of all the keys fit my locks better than the keys I had the guy at Lowe's make --- a few of those didn't even fit into the locks and the keys I had made at Kwik Key fit into the locks very smoothly. I recently chose Kwik-Key to re-key locks on a couple doors, re-program a digital door lock, and cut an unused real estate lock box attached to a handrail. Also, a week later, I had them come back out to re-key my mailbox. During both requests for service, it was Erik that came to the rescue. A good locksmith is hard to find. Eric is a pro. He learned everything from his dad who started the shop. We use him exclusively for all our locks and door issues at my business. His work is quality, and he stands behind it. Our lock broke 2 months after he fixed it, Eric came out and determined that the problem was a different spring on the other side of the lock and fixed it as part of his warranty. Amazing! If you live in the neighborhood, store his number in your phone just in case. A far better choice than googling locksmith and getting ripped off. read more

I called around 1030 this morning and someone was at my Grandmother's house before 1130. It took the guy an hr and a half but he was able to remove a rusty old lock with a key stuck in it. He did everything he could to NOT have to remove the door since that would have been double what we paid, which saved my Grandmother money. Kwik Keys came out for service call to repair the deadbolt on my front door. The technician, Erik, was very professional, explained the issue with the lock and replaced it quickly and keyed the new lock so that we could use our exiting keys. I have never used a locksmith for a home lock repair, so I don't know how prices compare, but they were able to quickly schedule me for a non emergency appointment and quickly repair my lock. SUMMARY: Fantastic service and reasonable prices Erik helped fix a sliding door lock which was giving us trouble. He went the extra mile to extensively troubleshoot the problem when I'm sure others would have given up much sooner. He was not hesitant to take things apart and re-align the door using a number of different tools. You can quickly appreciate that he knows what he is doing and wants to make sure that the job is done correctly. Not only did he fix the problem, the lock is now working better than ever.
