My best friend and I used to frequently eat at Genji, which is what used to occupy the building Kyoto now occupies. We came here today hoping that the quality of service and food had not changed, and we were pleasantly surprised. We were met with a somewhat awkward greeting by the host, but he got us seated quickly and allowed us some space between the other people at the table (who ended up being very polite and friendly also). The atmosphere has not fundamentally changed. They have created a space where people can sit and eat privately instead of around the hibachi grills, which is nice for being able to have a private conversation, or simply be able to focus on the person you're with. Our drink order was taken, and brought to us, quickly. The server was very friendly, as well as the chef. The chef was incredibly entertaining and personable; made jokes and held our attention with the humorous things he was doing and saying while cooking the food (he lightheartedly joked with me because I wanted my filet well-done). The quality of the food was excellent, it was delicious, and cooked to perfection. Overall, I was not in the least bit disappointed with the changes the new owner has made, and would recommend giving it a shot if you were on the fence. read more

First and foremost, currently Kyoto is on Groupon. I HIGHLY suggest buying a groupon and utilizing it to visit Kyoto! Now, on with the review!! We visited last night, Friday night, it was fairly quiet. We arrived a little after 6pm. There were three or four full hibachi tables seated. Our server came to take our drink and meal orders. After our drinks arrived about three more guests were seated at our table, she then took their orders. The first 5 of us that had been seated were given our souls/salads. Some were forgotten and she had returned with those after a few minutes. Between our soups and salads it was probably between 20-30 minutes before our hibachi chef had arrived. I'm a fairly patient person, it was date night, toddler free- so I was okay with that. I also understand they've recently reopened so I'm allowing a little grace period for any and all kinks to be worked out! The hibachi chef was amazing! Funny, excited, skilled and kept the table entertained during the service. Everything was cooked to perfection! I'm happy to say that it was one of the best hibachi meals I have had! I ordered chicken, steak & lobster. My husband ordered chicken, scallops and lobster. The FOOD and the CHEF definitely receive 5 stars from me! We will absolutely be returning. Like some other reviewers, I had a Groupon for this restaurant. Really good deal on there too, so check it out. I live near this area, and restaurants in this building come and go, but I really hope this one stays. We came here last night (Friday evening) for dinner. We sat at a hibachi table, but they also offer private tables/booths if you aren't into sitting with strangers. They offer soup AND salad, so that's nice. Most hibachi just offer one or the other, and I like feeling like I'm getting more bang outta my buck, ya feel me? The wait time from apps to getting the chef to our table was a little long, like a half hour. Felt a little drawn out. I get new business and everything, I was just hungry. The chef, though, was great. Entertaining, friendly, funny. And the food was GREAT! My boyfriend got steak, and he was super impressed, and that's really saying something. My chicken was awesome as well. The manager came over a few times to personally check up on all the tables and guests and that to me just showed character. We made reservations for my birthday. The service was great. After they took our drink order she gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. The soup and salad came out quickly. The waitress even brought some ice to cool the soup down for a small child. The chef was funny and they had some new tricks that made us laugh. We were excited that fried rice was included as a choice and not an extra charge. The variety of vegetables in the side was great and tasty. We had filet, scallops, shrimp and chicken. This used to be Genji Japanese steakhouse. I decided to give this place a try for lunch. We didn't wait at all for a seat. The decor is pretty much the same as Genji. You have the option to either be seated in one of those half booth half table situations or to be seated at a hibachi grill. We sat at the hibachi. The menu is pretty much what you'd expect. Shrimp/steak/chicken combos with rice and veggies. They've also added an option to "order from the kitchen." The "kitchen" menu was interesting, but we went with the traditional hibachi stuff. I had the filet and shrimp lunch combo. The steak was perfect. The shrimp was cooked well and the rice and veggies were good. The veggies were a mixture of onions, carrots, broccoli, and zucchini. They serve a "Yum Yum" sauce similar to Genji. It was a bit runnier and a lot sweeter than the Genji stuff. Chef Toni was awesome. He was very entertaining. Our server was very attentive. Lunch entrees were about $10 cheaper than their dinner counterparts. Solid lunch at a reasonable price. read more

Clean and the ginger dressing is excellent. I had sushi and it was good, I have extremely high standards so I cannot say "great" but it was alright. I did not have a chance to try to hibachi, which is their specialty. I didn't like a piece of the sashimi, it did not taste right, and I think they were offended, unfortunately. we passed by this place several times and never realized it's a Japanese steakhouse until the put their sign on recently. It was a great hibachi restaurant! Staff were great and our server was nice! Really like their yum yum sauce and clear soup (however, it's not real "clear" since they put mushrooms, onions and crunchy flakes on it. Love IT). Also, my favorite part is that they don't charge you for fried rice like other steakhouses do! If you have a groupon please read the fine print since it is not accepted during the lunch time, but the price on their regular menu is reasonable. Great place, a hidden gem! I brought 2 young boys here and they enjoyed the performance of our Chef. The Chef assigned to us here did a better job entertaining us, compare to the 5 other Japanese Steakhouse I have been to in Columbus. He still had a lot of energy even if the time we came was 40 minutes before closing time. The food tasted great! It was not too salty, he did not drenched it with soy sauce, the way I liked it. I like how the fried rice was cooked crispy (not burnt). Their birthday greeting consist of a dessert with a firecracker candle on it. The servers came singing while playing on the bong. read more

Our family always celebrates our Birthdays by having dinner at our "go to" Japanese Steakhouse. Unfortunately they are now closed on Mondays, which left us making a reservation at a similar restaurant. We originally made a decision to try Benihana's, but the reviews quickly changed our minds, and reviews are one thing - but it appears by the Managements response was even more concerning. So last night we tried Kyoto's Japanese Steakhouse. Salad was really small, Shrimp Appetizer consisted of 2 shrimp. Fried Rice had very little flavor, and after getting our drinks and placing our order we never saw our server again, until he dropped off our checks. Aside from this, we were seated at a table where a party of 3 was already seated. Nice folks, so with our party of 5 - there were 8 and we were ready to order. But then they seated another party with us that consisted of a family of 4. I felt so bad that this family sat facing the back of the Hibachi Chef, just absolutely rude. What's also amazing is comparing reviews on Google, and Yelp....so different; why? Lesson, everyone has opinions, stick with what you like. If your go to restaurant is closed on the day you want to celebrate, the following day would work just as well and going where you know what to expect makes the event just as special. read more

Yesterday evening, I treated my family to dinner at Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse. We were celebrating my son's 50th birthday but I hadn't mentioned it when making the reservation because I knew any hoopla would embarrass him. I did mention it to the host (who may have been the manager) in passing when I arrived so as to let him know that some of our party might be late due to traffic. They had a table reserved for us (there were eleven in the group) and when everyone was there, we were seated promptly. Drink orders were taken and delivered as soon as we were settled and extra attention was paid to the children (8, 2, and 1). Our food orders were then taken, soup and salads delivered, and as we were eating the chef came to the grill to prepare the meal. He asked who was celebrating an occasion which was the first I knew that my son's birthday had been passed on. The kids loved the show especially the 2-year old but all were enthralled. All that is well and good but how was the food, you ask? It was delicious! Steak meals were cooked as requested, one of my granddaughters commented several times about the variety of vegetables (more variety than just zucchini) and how much better the chicken was than under the former owners. Everyone else, again including the children, were too busy chowing down to comment. Finally, and again I had not asked for a birthday celebration, staff came out with a drum and an ice cream stuffed cream puff with a sparkler and had us sing happy birthday. We tried two sushi rolls, a california and a christmas roll and both were very good. She was running ragged and every thing took so long (getting our orders, getting our food, getting utensils, getting the bill, etc). The food was just okay but not that good compared to the price. I have to admit up front, that this is my first experience with this kind of cooked right at your table hibachi eatery. A more seasoned visitor might be less impressed. That being said I found every part of my lunch time visit increased my level of happiness and pleasure at having chosen to step out and treat to this slightly pricey meal. We started with the vegetable tempura appetizer, which was a fresh up, just a little sweet, warm and crisp selection of asparagus (only one piece sadly), broccoli, cucumber and sweet potato. Quickly followed with a hot rich fulfilling to the core miso soup that actually made me wish it was colder outside so I could fully appreciate the glowing feel it gave me. We had our salads with the yum yum sauce, which had a creamy tang that made the side seem like coleslaw... and yet it worked surprisingly well without derailing the Japanese theme. And lastly among the starters & sides, a spicy salmon roll. Likely the least remarkable part of the entire meal, but a solidly made roll that I had as usual (for me) as a quasi dessert item after the entree. For our main items we each had a lunch special with a plate filling serving of fried rice, bean sprouts (our cook asked if we'd pass on the option before he added them the the grilling), mixed vegetables and meat. The process zipped along and we had our Filet Mignon and shrimp plated and ready to go well before any other of our courses had been emptied. Each of the meats had a complex seasoning that added to the dish without overwhelming. Far more food on this single serving than either of us could have finished even alone, so we took home leftover portions of everything but the tempura which we did finish. Loved ever part of the meal including the music playing in the background, the Japanese decor and the alert and attentive staff. I will return, and likely bring even more family and friends with me next time. read more

I went to this restaurant with my wife and I walked away not thoroughly impressed but not dissatisfied. I had the sobu noodles and my wife had three different sushi rolls. The sushi rolls were pretty good but the noodles were a bit lacking in taste for the price. The inside/outside decoration is really, really nice and you can tell they spent lots of time and money decorating the restaurant. With so many options to eat in Columbus I'm not sure I'll be back for quite a while. If so, I'll try the hibachi and update the review then. read more

I've had the best sushi in Columbus here at Kyoto Japanese steakhouse! And is on my top 5 sushi places nationwide. I came across Kyoto through Groupons and decided to give it try from other positive reviews. I was greeted and seated immediately by the host. My server Louis promptly retrieved my order and offered suggestions. I sat at the sushi bar because I only ordered sushi. The sushi bar was clean and food was stored properly. The naruto was amazing, raw salmon, raw tuna and avocado wrapped in cucumber with a ponzu wasabi infused sauce. So delicious!! Usually when I order cucumber wrapped items, when I go and pick up to eat, it becomes undone. But the way this sushi chef prepared this dish, I picked it up in one bite and was able to enjoy each piece as whole. It was perfect!! Then the spicy Kani salad looked too pretty to eat but I did lol. And it was good. Some places put too much spicy mayo and all you taste is mayo but the sushi chef puts just enough sauce where you still taste the kani. Then the sushi. I ordered an eel avocado roll, spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll. Yummy in my tummy. Good rice to content portion ratio. The texture of the rice was sticky and not mushy. The flavor of the rice was good too. The tuna was fresh and I love the tempura crunch they put in it. The avocado was fresh and the eel was roasted just right. The shrimp tempura roll was my favorite!! The shrimp was fried just perfectly and the roe on the outside was fresh. You can tell the sushi chef takes his time and picks out the best ingredients as well as prepares it. The manager had to take my Groupon and he was super easy to talk to. Friendly staff. I sat at the sushi bar and 2 other servers asked if I was ok. Awesome!!! That shows their team of servers care about your dining experience. Can't wait to go back and try the habachi!! read more

This Japanese steakhouse exceeded my expectations! Less expensive than a lot of Japanese steakhouses but the quality of food was better in my opinion! The service was great, everyone very friendly, and the chef was entertaining! My boyfriend and I started with a fresh sushi roll which delicious and then got the Kyoto dinner for 2 which came with 3 choices of meat and everything else you would expect with a Japanese steakhouse full course meal. They did not short you on anything even with it being a meal deal!
