The service is what made this one star. The food is always fine. The young kid working the host stand was incredibly rude. I ordered food to go in the restaurant, paid and tipped over 20% on a takeout order. I then politely asked if their phones weren't working as I tried to call and place my order multiple times and the young boy (15?) told me they do not answer every phone call as they only prioritize the customer in the restaurant. I've eaten at a lot of Japanese places over the years, and seen everything from the very best. . .to the very worst. This is a pretty dang good place. Not the very best, but definitely way up there, and for a Japanese place in rural Nebraska, it definitely exceeds all expectations. The food was outstanding, the sushi was fresh, the service was attentive and friendly, the decor was tasteful, and the prices fairly reasonable. The best Japanese steakhouse and sushi in Kearney area. I had the sushi and sashimi platter and it was excellent. Fresh tuna, salmon, red snapper and shrimp. All well prepared and fresh. They have a wide menu of choices and the grill items looked good as well. I might try that next time I visit. My only complaint is I ordered the fried shrimp appetizer and it only had 2 pieces of shrimp but 7 other vegetables fried with it. Zucchini, onion ring, sweet potatoes etc. They were good, but I really just wanted the shrimp and wasn't expecting all the other fried stuff. read more

Open for dining during Covid, and all servers/employees wore masks, which we appreciated. We visited in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday, and had terrific service. Similar to other hibachi restaurants; this building was previously another restaurant and has been completely renovated. Stopped off here on my road trip from Denver to Chicago. I stuck with appetizers and hot stuff so I can't comment on anything else but their seaweed salad, gyoza, chicken fried rice and steak yaki udon noodles were awesome. If this place were near me in Chicago I'd go there for the fried noodles alone. read more

Service was quick and friendly. They were great to work with us as we chose to split the hibachi meal instead of a full meal each. We did the combination of two meats-the chicken and they sukiyaki steak. The chef was funny, warm and engaging. The yum yum sauce lives up to its name. We enjoyed crab rangoons first. Crispy, full of flavor. The fried rice and vegetables were perfectly cooked. Nice smoky flavor to the fried rice. The steak was so juicy, practically melted in our mouths. This review is for the sushi bar only- My favorite sushi restaurant in the tri cities! As somebody from the coast, I'm a little more picky about restaurants,!especially sushi as it's usually less than great in this area. Kyoto is by far my first choice when it comes to food quality and customer service, they always go above and beyond to give their patrons the best service! They don't have natto (but they do have handrolls which I pleasantly discovered) but all their sushi and sashimi dishes are so beautiful plated and presented! On more than one occasion I've been handed plates with ornate orchids and decorative flowers and led sparkling lights. They don't have a huge overly complicated menu with tons of crazy names rolls which Is actually a bonus for me. Just a normal simple menus that covers all the bases: appetizer, sashimi, nigiri, handrolls, specialty rolls etc. freshest I've had in this area, highly recommended if you're in Kearney! read more

Extremely poor customer service. My girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to order takeout from Kyoto. Unfortunately after calling them a few times. they didn't answer. That didn't deter us, we decided to go into Kyoto and order the food ourselves. A young man took our order, and despite the brief exchange, I tipped the carryout guy 20%. As we were waiting, my girlfriend was curious if we had the correct phone number for Kyoto. So she politely asked the young man who took our order if google had the correct phone number. He then insultingly turned and said, " we turn off our phones once we are busy, we worry about the customer in front of us", as if we weren't just a customer who not only just paid but also just tipped him. It was almost as if we had offended him by even asking. Clearly he was having a rough night, and I've worked in the restaurant business, so i understand what it's like to go through an extremely busy Saturday night. However, the answer was so sharp, and impolite that it left an "awful taste in our mouths". Kyoto is a place of not just good food, but it's also supposed to be an "experience" for the customer. Hopefully an manager, owner or someone with some "pull" at Kyoto can remind their employees that giving the customer a positive experience is also apart of the job as well as providing great food. Pretty disappointed with this place. We went last night (a Thursday) for the first time and were told there was a 5 minute wait for our table for two. 15 minutes later, we were seated in a mostly empty dining room, so the longer wait to be seated was odd. We ordered 2 sushi rolls and an entree, but it took 45 minutes after ordering to receive our food with absolutely zero updates or checking in with us from the waiter. We weren't able to stay and enjoy our food for long because of such an unexpectedly long wait and had to promptly ask for a box and the check since we had other evening arrangements to get to. After all that, I was really unimpressed with the sushi rolls themselves. I gave 2 stars instead of one because the restaurant itself is clean, the low lighting was nice, and the teppanyaki tables looked to be entertaining. We won't be returning anytime soon though, our time and money is better spent elsewhere. read more
