I'm super fussy about glasses. I buy them every 5 years or so and wear them constantly. Being in marketing it's important that I pick the right pair. Something fashionable that doesn't look like it's trying to hard. Glasses that fit me, and I don't mean size. LA Eyeworks just seems to always have what I'm looking for. I am a glasses whore. I wear them like I wear my jewelry. I have a pair to match every outfit. I can get my glasses fix at LA Eyeworks. I buy about 4-8 pair a year from them. They have the best and most funky style. Their service is the best as well. I have been known to marathon 15 min before close and they still can find me a pair of glasses that are perfect. When it comes to glasses, they can make or brake a style. As for hairdresser, I am always sceptical when it comes to choosing a new pair of glasses. Diana, one of the sales girls, had a vision. She only had to show me two pair of glasses, before she showed me the ONE. She was extremely helpful and I feel great about myself ! The upside here is that for the unlimited wallet, they have some unique styles of eyeglasses. If you like their frames, I would strongly suggest having the lenses made somewhere else. They never got my prescription right - after two months the lenses were still wrong. They refused to give me my money back, offering to give me cheaper lenses for the premium price I'd paid for "thinnest" lenses! They are very nice until you've paid up (nonrefundable!), then they really don't give a crap about making sure your frames and prescription are correct. read more

l.a. eyeworks was the first indie store in los angeles of the 1980s to spearhead the new wave (pun intended) of well-designed & unusual glasses frames. even oliver peoples was founded by someone previously employed by l.a. eyeworks. l.a.e. still produces fines frames, but since the '80s, when you could buy a pair of hep glasses for $85.00, the price has more than tripled, although most of the materials are the same. i would understand if these were all, say, titanium frames. but for metal and plastic, i think the average $280.00 price tag is outlandish. that said, i haven't purchased frames here since the early '90s because of this. [see westside opticians, on fairfax, for extraordinarily fair prices on haute glasses frames.] i had gone into l.a.e. to continue fundraising for homeboy, which is in dire financial straits, with even the staff at half-salary right now. i happened to notice a somewhat wizened female being helped by the girl who asked if i needed anything, and to whom i gave the homeboy-as-annual-charitable-donation spiel. the woman, with scraggly blonde hair and almost no make up (i think) resembled elayne boozler, who had performed at an amanda foundation (dog rescue) benefit at paramount a few years ago. so i said, 'are you elayne?' and the venomous look she shot me in the table mirror where she met my eyes snapped me right back to said fundraiser. i had been helping with the set-up and doggie organization, and greeted her when she arrived to do the show. now this happened probably nine years ago, and i STILL remember the hate-filled look she gave me then. so today, after a second look, that if eyes could shoot bile, hers would have, i am certain it was she, so familiar was the look, and the absence of context for such extreme poison. what i want to know is, is she the unhappiest comic on earth?, thereby making her so very nasty at no provocation whatsoever. is the fact that she does, in fact, look like a witch from the grimmest grimm's fairytale make her behave thusly? i have known not traditionally "beautiful" people who nevertheless project personalities and behavior that make them beautiful. elayne boozler does not. it's like that twighlight zone, where the greedy heirs who vulture around the rich old man, are made to wear masks that reflect their inner greed and spoiledness, upon the clock striking midnight, the old man dying, and the removal of the masks, find their faces have molded to conform to their inner ugliness. boozler's piss & vinegar attitude appears to be reflected on her visage in much the same way. nuff said about that. i just think it/she's weird for her obvious venom. and the fact that it has been directed at me twice without apparent reason... i guess she needs dark glasses to hide her glowering stares... i'd have told her to go to hell, but obviously she's already there. read more

I heard about this place and some yearly sale that they have. I have to say that selection is good, but customer service not so good. While attempting to pay I encountered the most incompetent associate working there, as I was persistently asked, "How will you pay?" And I answered, "By credit card. Do you accept American Express?" Again, I was asked, "How will you pay?" It's ridiculous, like a broken record. I answered the question and maybe she could answer the question, too. I asked if she didn't understand, as I surely did, but she persistently asked and I said that perhaps I'll pay with another sales associate. She finally said that it's fine to pay with such a credit card, and she grabbed it from me, then said to let her see my prescription. I said, "I wasn't asking for a prescription, but now that you mention that they're performed here, I'll be happy to see the person who is in charge of that." She rang me up, I signed, and again said, "Give me your prescription." I don't like being spoken to in this manner, so I said no. I asked where is this person who is in charge of such a thing and she said, "Outside." I said, "Really? Outside? Are they on a break? What does outside mean?" She began assisting another customer and I never got a straight answer. Really, you should consider hiring people who are both competent and can communicate much better. I also own a small business, but would never accept any sort of associate who behaved in this manner, even if they worked for free. It's totally ridiculous and unprofessional. read more

I am vain. There, I've said it. I looked over hell's half acre to find glasses I liked in a place that took my insurance and found nothing. Then I went to LA Eyeworks, and voila! Lovely glasses at a not so lovely price. But for something I will be wearing on my nose every single day, I am willing to pay whatever it takes to satisfy my vanity. I bought the Echo Park (in Naughty Gold Pearl) with assistance from the lovely Diana. I love my glasses and have received many compliments, music to my vain ears. read more

i only wear plastic frames and la eyeworks has the best selection i have ever seen. i found out rupaul is a fan and went into the store a bit ago for the first time. i have since bought numerous glasses and sunglasses from here. i really love the selection and the annual sale. the frames themselves are great quality and they have excellent lenses, especially for those of us with terrible eyesight. i find the staff to be really helpful, honest and kind. i use the free glasses cleaning as a reason to go in far too often and try on new frames from the constantly growing as well as diverse selection. i love going into a store with a beautiful and gentle akita and getting sparkling clean lenses too. read more

My semi-frame glasses (Litebox 827/tortoise) are titanium. In July, the right arm broke off completely at the hinge while watching a movie. After purchasing a new arm, a month later, the left arm broke at the hinge while washing dishes. I have NEVER had a pair of glasses to break in my life. I have purchased a Kazuo Kawasaki frame every two years dating back to 1996 and the frames are still in excellent shape. Durability is everything in a pair of glasses when one has very bad eyesight. read more

walked in today looking for glasses. 2 employees (1 female/1 male). Noonne else in the store but a family. I walked in and was greeted by both salespeople. The guy was sitting at the desk and the female was walking around. I asked which way were the male glasses or were they all unisex. They both said they were unisex and all mixed in together with various sizes. The female said that some were more geared toward women. That made sense to me. I looked around a bit and the female employee went back to help the family. The male employee sat at the desk and didn't say anything. it looked like he was working on some paperwork or something. I picked up a few frames near the male employee but he didn't say anything. Didn't ask me anything about what i was looking for or what frames i was looking for, etc. so after walking around for a bit i decided to leave. when i left noone said anything. Maybe this is a trend at eyeglass places on Melrose, but i find this very unacceptable to have a customer in a store and not lift a finger to help them shop for your very expensive looking glasses. Yes, they are artsy and zany frames and that's nice but they are very expensive so a customer wants to not "self serve". This is not a drive through window at In and Out. People shopping for glasses need help to determine what frames are good for their face. Even if the guy was busy with paperwork, i doubt very seriously it would have shut down the business operations for him to wait 5 minutes and see what frames I was looking for. Also, noone said goodbye as i left. It was as it noone cared i was in the store. I know there are a lot of "lookie lous" on Melrose who look but do not buy, so maybe that is the mentality of the salespeople where they do not care since most people are just tourist. However, i have an appointment with Century City Optometry at Century City Mall to discuss frames and I would have definitely appreciated the consultation i never received at this store. read more
