This class was honestly amazing. Tom and his two other instructors were very nice, very calm and very patient with everyone. They were very clear on explanations and took their time to make sure everybody understood each step. They were very knowledgeable and honestly made the entire group feel very safe. Me and my husband went and we were both very very entry-level. But we both left extremely confident and just blown away at how much we ended up learning and just one 4 hour intro class.

Tom is an amazing instructor. I took his pistol 101 and 101B Courses. I have shot a gun numerous times, but it was always with friend sharing 'how to, so no formal training. After finding Tom online, I went to his 101 course "safety and fundamentals". It was an eye opener for sure. He has a strong base for safety with real life examples as to why safety should always be a priority. During the firing practice, he has great attention to detail and truly helps with having you understand the basics. A great experience for anyone looking into formal training, or introduction into firearms.

Outdoor training with smaller group sizes for personalized training within a safe training environment.

I went to Tom to train for my CCW and I highly recommend his courses. He does outdoor training so you avoid inhaling lead or being crammed into loud indoor spaces. He offers smaller class sizes, so you get personalized support, and works with right or left handed shooters. Tom focuses on safety because safety is paramount! I spent the majority of the class training in handling my weapon, and not sitting behind a desk. If you're going to be carrying or handling weapons, you want an instructor that will teach you realistically what you need to know to handle your weapon safely, swiftly and accurately. Tom will help you learn up to date weapons training and how to identify, abandon and correct outdated techniques. I was surprised by how much I improved my shooting proficiency, accuracy, and confidence after just 16 hours of training. Train with Tom!

Great training! Thanks Tom. This was my second class with Tom and I really needed a refresher. Felt a lot more comfortable the second time around.

1(.22lr) and 4(9mm) were my first time shooting. With Toms guidance I was able to group my shots closer!

Tom is an AMAZING instructor. It was my first time ever shooting a handgun. He prioritizes Safety above all else. He has such a keen eye for details that he knew when I rushed one of the steps which led to one of my shots being away from the previous shots. He teaches that ego and pride have to be out the window. I can say now i am more confident in using a handgun after this one lesson. will be booking the next class! Tom, thank you so much!

The improvements in my shooting were immediate and measurable!

I had already taken a training course prior to the one Tom Nguyen provides and signed up for his home defense 101 course. What he did next speaks to the genuine, conscientious, and serious care with which Tom takes with his training. He sent me message to talk to me directly over the phone to ensure I had the fundamentals needed to take an involved course like the home defense using a firearm, and immediately I could tell he was a different kind of instructor. Most just take your fee, sign you up and run you through a course. Not Tom, as he is very adamant that your level is suited for a course and that not only you, but others in group's course will be as safe as possible and that it will be a very productive experience. Because of this, I decided to take his private one-on-one fundamental marksmanship course and man did it ever exceed my expectations! It is billed as a three-hour course with the first two hours being lecture and review of safe firearm handling and fundamentals. Don't think the lecture is too long as it is worth every second! You will review the four tenants of safe gun handling, the seven fundamentals of marksmanship, but unlike the course I took earlier at another provider, Tom goes into details to the point where you get best practices from your toes to the top of your head and most importantly, in your brain where you will really learn the "mental" aspect of handling and shooting a firearm which is the most important. I knew there were gaps in the initial training course I took and my session with Tom filled them and then some. I can't recommend Tom enough and especially those who would find the typical firearm instruction that is bit aggressive (and macho, let's be honest) and mostly focused on shooting, rather than the intellectual mindset and I would even go so far as to say the "Zen" of firearm marksmanship (and I don't mean it with typical platitudes this entails), so you must hire Tom immediately to be your first instructor! And again, to speak to Tom's integrity, he will recommend you take other courses with other instructors to compare and expand your knowledge. For me, Tom IS the baseline to which I will compare other instructors to. A big thanks to Tom for his great course and the firearm community needs more people like him!

It was a pleasure being in Toms Pistol 101 Safety and Fundamentals class. He made it highly relatable and demystified the stereotypes of firearms. I can tell he has a passion for firearm safety and wants to share his knowledge with others. It was my first time shooting a handgun and I think I did great. Highly recommend his course to anyone trying to learn firearm safety or anyone who is looking to purchase one.

I took the L.A Progressive Shooters - Pistol 101 course in May 2022. The experience exceeded my expectations and was worth the travel time, coming up from Los Angeles. The instructors Tom, Robbie and Melissa are very professional, safe and friendly. I felt welcome and in good hands.

I didn't expect to shoot this accurately.

Do you provide lessons for children, if so is there an age requirement?

We have taught children as young as 11. There is no specific age requirement, as long as the parent/legal guardian also attends with the child, and they can answer these 2 questions:…

I recently purchased a new rifle and would like instruction for it's use and maintenance; could this be covered in the standard private lesson (such as, this gun or one like it would be used as the demonstration/practice weapon)?

We plan to offer Rifle 101 lessons starting summer 2023.

What's the cost for the firearm training? Also, how long is the training for? Since you provide the training at the range, if I sign up for myself, will I still be able to shoot there? Thank you.

Depending on the type of lesson and experience level, the cost starts at $75 for 2 hour Friendly Intro to Firearms, up to $250 private one on one lessons that are 3-4 hours.…

Does your range rent out guns for newer shooters to use?

Burro Canyon Shooting Park outdoor range where we teach our lessons does not have gun rentals.…

Natalie especially was super helpful, educational, and easy to talk to. They have classroom spaces upstairs, which is where my instructor provided a lot of useful, practical information on my firearm: I assembled my AR on my own and learned quite a bit during that process, but he further showed me how to disassemble it completely (I purchased a complete upper so didn't know how the BCG fully operated) and best practices for using and cleaning it. Then we went down to lane 18 for hands-on training. Shot about 100 rounds -- my instructor helped me zero in both my iron sights and a red dot with magnifier I installed on my AR. Everyone there seemed to be expert firearms owners, which is a good thing vs. people who are unsafe and not following safe usage guidelines (I've heard other ranges in L.A. County allow newbies on the range without instruction -- not a good idea for obvious safety reasons). I also like that they have a lounge area where people who are not shooting can still look through thick glass/plexiglass and be safe doing it. Also, they provide a sink and soap so you can wash your hands afterwards (hint: you don't want gunpowder or other after-effects of shooting on your hands should law enforcement pull you over for another reason). Lockers were provided for our range gear, large enough to accommodate almost any size of bag. The shooting range is small (only four lanes at present, but they are moving to a larger location), but it was well lit and temperature controlled. They scheduled CCW range time efficiently, and I was easily able to qualify my firearm during the lunch break. (Pizza was provided!) As for the actual course content, it too was far superior to the other courses I've attended. Real-world cases were used often, which made the lessons more effective.
