Squared away course! Paul's course was great, on time, straightforward and on point. Broke up the learning with fun and engaging sections.

Unfortunately, I got terrible experience, because I decided to pay via Groupon. The information on the website was initially incomplete (meaning it was false). done within an hour, as soon as I found out, after paying for the reservation, that I had to pay extra. I didn't like it , because I think it's a scam and dishonest , and decided to cancel right away. cancellation was done within an hour, as soon as I found out, after paying for the reservation, that I had to pay extra. Everything happened within an hour. He didn't return all my money. He may be a good shooter, but the institution is slippery . yes, and I lost $37.25 on cancellation!!! * unfortunately I can't comment on the statement from this organization below, but from the message below it is clear that the person does not take responsibility for what happened. and this is a fake apology! It will be on his conscience. again confirmation, I am glad that I cancelled and did not deal with a dishonest organization.

Needing to get certified to obtain a CCW permit, I found Sentri Institute on the Orange County Sheriff's Department's certified CCW trainers page and simply chose this company due its close proximity. As a former primary marksmanship instructor for the United States Marine Corps and a California POST-certified rangemaster, I was a bit apprehensive about training with Sentri Institute, especially after my neighbor told me about his experience with another school/instructor (NOT Sentri Institute), who was very dogmatic with firearms/accessories selection and wouldn't let his students qualify with pistol-mounted optics (PMOs), citing that shooters have a tendency to become overly reliant on their PMOs (using that argument, does that mean shooters without PMOs shouldn't be reliant on their iron sights?). The only things that should be dogmatically preached are the four firearms safety rules and the fundamentals of marksmanship; everything else (equipment and tactics) is just opinion and should be left to the student to decide on what to use. Call it a lucky pick: I found the owner and president of Sentri Institute, Paul Peng, to be very friendly and helpful over the phone when I signed up for a class, which was a great start. On the day of the class a few weeks later, Paul was very informative regarding laws of defense as well as defensive shooting, which consisted of the five-count draw, tactical and speed reloads, one-handed shooting (both strong and support hands), flashlight deployment, and retention shooting (techniques often taught at larger shooting schools like Thunder Ranch and International Tactical Training Seminars). Paul was humble, very articulate when giving instruction and encouraged dialogue from the class. My only complaint is the compressed time schedule, but that just means Paul tries to load his students up with as much knowledge as he can within the one day of instruction. The techniques mentioned earlier were taught more for familiarization than for proficiency, which is why it is important to practice what you learn in class on your own, especially since shooting is a perishable skill. Also, keep in mind that the class I am reviewing is the CCW class, which is NOT a beginner's class. Students should have a grasp on basic marksmanship, handgun manipulation techniques, and proper mindset before attending this class. I would definitely recommend Sentri Institute for CCW certifications and even further firearms instruction.

They have classroom spaces upstairs, which is where my instructor provided a lot of useful, practical information on my firearm: I assembled my AR on my own and learned quite a bit during that process, but he further showed me how to disassemble it completely (I purchased a complete upper so didn't know how the BCG fully operated) and best practices for using and cleaning it. Then we went down to lane 18 for hands-on training. Shot about 100 rounds -- my instructor helped me zero in both my iron sights and a red dot with magnifier I installed on my AR. Everyone there seemed to be expert firearms owners, which is a good thing vs. people who are unsafe and not following safe usage guidelines (I've heard other ranges in L.A. County allow newbies on the range without instruction -- not a good idea for obvious safety reasons). I also like that they have a lounge area where people who are not shooting can still look through thick glass/plexiglass and be safe doing it. Also, they provide a sink and soap so you can wash your hands afterwards (hint: you don't want gunpowder or other after-effects of shooting on your hands should law enforcement pull you over for another reason). You can rent a lane by the hour ($25/hour). No reservations so first come, first served. Will definitely be going back here for more practice. Recommended!

My partner inherited a gun from grandpa several years ago and recently purchased a Glock for protection. I was involuntarily enrolled in a class by said partner. We met with Jesse from ShootSocal and just finished our class earlier this evening. I can confidently say I am much more comfortable with handling firearms after today. I'm still not going to run off and buy a gun of any sort. The class equipped me with the knowledge and understanding of responsible gun handling I never saw myself reach. After the education portion and handling of our unloaded Glock for 2 hours, we headed downstairs to put theory into practice. While obviously *very* loud, Jesse was really great at reassuring us at what we were doing, congratulating us at our success, and clearly putting a nice spin on our failures. Very important to add: our class was supposed to only be two hours. But after a slow-moving education period (we asked a lot of questions) Jesse still made it a point to help us at the actual gun range for almost a full extra hour. If you're new to firearms and want to learn, I cannot recommend this place any more.

The staff were welcoming and friendly. It sounded like they made special accommodations for myself and some other shooters, by opening up the "tactical" range, since there were no members shooting at that time. That was awesome, because it got me on the range sooner. I also brought with me a new firearm - Canik Mete MC9LS with a new optic. I forgot my regular range bag with my tools; however, the range staff allowed me to use one of their tools to adjust my new optic. I don't know how the targets move on the regular range, but on the tactical range, you can push buttons to automatically set the targets at a specified distance, move the targets manually back and forth, and automatically have the target return. Best of all, the prices were very reasonable. $20 per lane and $0.50 targets - WAAAAAY better than prices in the Bay Area. If I were a resident of the area, I'd definitely become a member. Kevin signed me up for a lane, let me rent a couple of handgun models I researched previously, and critiqued my targets, giving some general feedback and advice. He also pointed me toward a couple other models that are known to be more friendly to left-handed shooters that I can test out in the future. Great place; a little on the older and smaller sides, but staff was extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. I recently completed my first class with them, and to say the bar has been set high for any future training would be an understatement. The Coaching The instruction from Ernie and Josh is truly superior. They strike the perfect balance between being encouraging and providing the kind of necessary, corrective criticism you need when handling a firearm. They don't just watch you shoot; they coach you through every movement. Their ability to spot a mechanical flaw and help you fix it in real-time is impressive. Professionalism & Environment CEO Ernie has built an incredible team. From start to finish, the entire staff was professional, helpful, and clearly dedicated to the craft. As a first-time student, I felt welcomed but also respected as a serious trainee. The Standard This class is designed to prepare you for the real world. They ask you to push yourself for perfection, which is exactly the mindset demanded by CCW criteria. They don't settle for "good enough," and they make sure you don't either. Final Verdict I strongly recommend this class to everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced shooters. You will leave more confident, more capable, and with a much deeper understanding of what it means to carry responsibly. Also, shop at costco.
