Landed in Kona drove to Hilo when the day turned to night looking for some grindz and L&L did the trick. Had the Moco Loco and a Gravy Beef plate to go to eat back at our Vrbo. Both were delicious. Prices very reasonable with friendly service. Mahalo.

Combo L&L and Chinese Fast food! Super nice service, local joint in downtown Hilo. I like it.

Coming back from Hawaii after a perfect vacation made my fam and I crave Hawaiian food something awful! We missed the mac salad, the rice, saisan noodle, the POG! I was leery about this L&L from some of the reviews, but as a veteran yelper I know to read between the lines. I knew where it was, but when I drove up it looked closed! Tip: drive INTO the shopping center, enter on the side facing the park lot, not the street. A large aquarium will greet you. It made me want to rescue whatever was living in it. Order at the cluttered counter, and in a few minutes, your food is ready. I have to say the kitchen made delicious, fresh food. Chicken Katsu with curry sauce over rice, mixed bbq plate, saisan noodles, fried crispy won-tons, and the uniqitous mac salad- they are all here. So comforting, filling, simple food freshly prepared. The kitchen clearly cares about the food they put out. This is a solid L&L!

Small mochiko chicken, Hawaiian Plate (Lau Lau & Kalua Pork), curry Chicken Katsu, side curry sauce

We came here on vacation for a sampling of local favorites despite the mixed Yelp ratings and are so glad. Mostly wanted to try the Lau Lau which was tender and juicy, mochiko chicken from the pre made foods- admittedly was not super hot but so so flavorful we weren't bothered, everything else was hot and fresh. Kalua pork and cabbage was very flavorful and smokey, katsu was crisp and plentiful. Portions were generous, best food quantity and quality for an affordable price point (~35) we've had all trip! The employees must have changed since the other reviewers left negative comments about the service, we experienced friendly service and even overhead the front of house make sure the cooks got another customers egg preference right they really cared about getting people what they ordered AND in a timely fashion as they noted to cooks if customers were actively waiting for something to be made to ensure they had a speedy service. The staff was all joking with each other and seemed to like working together. Ambiance was very local, plenty of folks were ordering takeout, some were dining in- give this place a chance despite the Yelp rating which doesn't seem fitting for the current management and quality!

Located downtown Hilo, has its own parking, but you can also easily find street parking around there. It was fairly busy while we were there and a lot of locals come to grab lunch. The lady working at the register was super nice and pleasant to talk to. We ordered a chick katsu bowl and a seafood platter combo, the food was ready quickly and tasted good as expected. You can sit and eat at the tables there or take the food to go. There are no bathrooms for customers though. There menu is so busy with so many options so if you're new it might take you a moment to figure out what to get. There is premade options that you can select from or order something else from the menu. This location has more options and better prices compared to the one at the mall near Walmart.

Not bad all considering your options for actual local food on the big island and don't be trying to hunt any down on the Kilo side. That good local food like that one would find on Oahu or the California in Vegas I got the BBQ chicken, keeping it simple, thinking they can't possibly mess that up. And they managed not to lol I was thankful b/c the 2 star collective review on here had us worried. The mac salad was acceptable. Not the best but would do. The rice was decent as well. Could've been a tad stickier but all in all they went well with the chicken. The wife got chicken katsu. We thought she offers a mini but dang did she pack the chicken into the container. I believe we did end up paying extra for the sauce that one would think came with the order but whatever. The chicken was perfectly fried and breaded. It was super Krispy and tasty...

BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo.

Located on the University of Hilo's campus, this seemingly farm to table restaurant has a lot to offer. We ordered the House Salad, Fried Kalo, Fresh catch (Opah/moonfish) over noodles, and fish over Bolognese. We went extra on the fish as we've been eating a bit heavy and some lighter seafood was in order during our Hilo trip. We also got the pickled mango martini and sangria. Everything was very fresh, with local produce making up the crisp salad and delicious pan fried fish over yakisoba style noodles. The fried kalo is definitely different, as it's hard to describe not being a potato, with a different texture being crispy, yet fluffy and starchy on the inside. If you like fried potatoes, its worth trying. The fish over Bolognese had some conflicting flavors, but the fish was again tasty and fresh. Both drinks were quite citrusy, with the mango martini being a bit too tart for me. Staff was polite and efficient. Live music also happens, but it adds to the atmosphere rather than taking over. Reservations can made online and there's plenty of parking.
