Open late, great walkable location, dining inside or out. The food was spot on- pasta and steak, a Negroni. Service was helpful and friendly, even took the time to talk to us about the country, people and politics. Will return!

First day in Rome and we stumbled upon this restaurant. We picked it because all the tables outside were full and it was a busy place inside. It was about a 10 minute wait for a table. The staff was friendly with limited English but we were able to order and have a little bit of conversation with our server. Complimentary olives (with the pits) are served. What we ordered: - Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe - great flavor was not heavily seasoned with pepper and noodles were al dente - Rigatoni alla carbonara - this is not like the American style but still had great flavor mostly from the guanciale, noodles also cooked al dente - Spaghetti con vongole veraci e carciofi Thin slices of artichoke with clams over spaghetti, really didn't have much flavor With so many restaurants in Rome to try, I probably would not return but it was a nice place to stumble upon

Phenomenal Italian restaurant with amazing food and a cozy, intimate ambiance. I visited La Matriciana dal 1870 for dinner immediately after my plane landed in Rome, and it was such a delightful introduction to the city. The staff was incredibly inviting and friendly; there was a group of five or six servers standing by the front door as we entered, and they all gave us a hearty, warm "buonasera" before guiding us to a cute little side room with six small tables. The full restaurant is quite large, but I love that it was divided into several smaller spaces to create a more intimate dining experience. My friend and I both ordered a pasta dish (of course), and they were both phenomenal. The pasta was perfectly al dente and had absorbed so much flavor from our respective sauces. My friend ordered their rigatoni alla carbonara, and I got their linguini con spigola di mare e limone. The deep grooves and large hole in the center made the rigatoni the perfect shape to soak up all the rich, velvety carbonara sauce. It was super creamy and flavorful from the guanciale and egg yolks, and the black pepper and salty, slightly funky pecorino romano gave it a great bite. I loved my linguine; the pasta itself was perfectly cooked, and I loved the little chunks of sea bass. The fish gave the pasta a great umami, savory flavor, but the lemon kept the dish bright and from tasting fishy. We finished our meal with the semifreddo al pistachio, which was rich, slightly sweet, and so creamy. The pistachios gave the ice cream a delightful nutty flavor and crunch, and the ice cream was perfectly fluffy and airy.

Absolutely amazing. Definitely need reservations but it's a beautiful restaurant with great service. The food & wine was perfectly portioned & presentation is nicely done. Simple yet inviting.

This is the food I expected from Italy. Now that I have learned that the first course is pasta, and the second course is meat, I am good. The service here was the best. My wife only wanted the Sea Bass & Potato's (second course), but I wanted Spaghetti (first course) and Lamb (second course). They were good enough to bring her fish with my spaghetti. Her Sea Bass was fillet, and they removed the skin of the bottom in front of her. She didn't have to eat any fish skin. I, had cheese on my spaghetti. when my server noticed that I had eaten through the layer with cheese, he brought me more cheese. He put the additional on the spaghetti, and left more for later. Top notch. The lamb came last, and it was the best. I called before they were open to see if I could get a seat at 7. They said come at 7:15. They still didn't have any seats, but they gave us a seat outside. Fortunately, it did not rain. Everything was magnificent. They offered me wine, but I requested a beer. It was their normal Italian beer. It tasted like my favorite beer home in the states. Here for my 4th day, and I finally find a dinner restaurant to rave about. One block off the main road, near the opera.

During our trip to Rome, there were so many restaurants to choose from to dine in. We walked past this restaurant and wanted to go in but we were told there was no availability. We ended up having to make a reservation for the following night. When we arrived the service was quick and good. The pasta was cooked perfectly and was yummy and filling. The drinks were also delicious (I'm a huge fan of Aperol spritz now). The dessert was EVERYTHING. And the restaurant had a nice fancy ambiance inside although many were dressed casually. I would recommend this restaurant if you're looking to have a great dinner and don't skip the gelato!

The best mozzarella I've ever had in my life and the best carbonara (maybe best pasta) I've had in my life. The service was outstanding. One of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. When i return to Rome i will go straight here! Thank you again La Matriciana family.

Sea bass. Skin is removed by the waiter just before it is served.

Really an excellent experience here. We went because they had interesting local seafood, and loved the place for the excellent service and cooking. The grilled octopus I had was excellent, and the sea bass my wife had was great also. We added a side of spinach which was good, until you started tasting the different flavors layered on it. Then it too was excellent! Really elegant atmosphere but without feeling like I was underdressed in shorts and a polo. Great place in Rome for seafood and definitely recommended.

    Truffle anti pasta, olives, bread

Visited again on my last trip to Roma, and this is still my absolute favorite restaurant in all of Italy. If you like truffles, you will find excellent truffle dishes here. Service is outstanding and the ambiance is top tier. I would advise calling at least a day ahead to make sure they will be open, and also to make a reservation. They take plenty of holidays off for their staff apparently - they are that good that business will come to them when they are open no matter what.

    Truffle pasta, all'amatriciana pasta

This was recommended by a coworker, but I can't say I'd return. The service was okay - they were friendly enough and efficient, but they didn't seem particularly happy that we (tourists) were there. At first we didn't think anything of it (we recognize Americans are overly friendly), but when we saw how the waitstaff interacted with the locals/regulars it was a pretty stark comparison. They also reacted a big negatively when we decided not to order a dessert (after ordering a bottle of wine, several starters, entrees, etc). More importantly though, the food was just okay. We were excited for the pasta dishes (they are well known for them) and they weren't bad, but after nearly a week in Rome.... We definitely had better.

We have been here a couple of times and food and service is always excellent. The staff is super nice and can recommend the best wines to pair with the food. We had their Matriciana pasta, caccio e pepe and Cheesecake with wild strawberries. Will continue to go back when in Rome.

    The spinach ravioli was perfection!!

Just ask for Luigi and let him take you to the land of goodness! From the veal to pasta to the steaks this restaurant has it covered. We started with the house red and white, both perfect and tasty. The ravioli was spot on and we shared the veal limone with roasted peppers. Wow!! A sexy, intimate place you should not miss in Rome!!

Octopus appetizer was amazing. I'm a lover of actions and have had it at many different places. This one is one of the best

Great food . We had the octopus appetizer, grilled salted cod and rigatoni pasta with pecorino cheese and bacon.

Our hotel manager had suggested another restaurant, but I was apprehensive to try, but did later, more on that restaurant review in it's own post. I rather did what I should have done throughout the trip to, which is to search google for local reviews. This tactic I found to be much better than to trust American reviews for restaurants to visit from Youtube or even here, just because the American touristy taste tends to favor bland or Olive Garden style pseudo Italian. The real Italian taste is much different and something one needs to develop. I was familiar with European Italian food, as I had said before in other reviews that Mexico has better Italian food outside of Italy. Additionally, the good restaurants here in Italy do not open before 7 PM. If it does or if someone that looks foreign to Italy is outside trying to lure you in, it's a tourist restaurant with iffy flavor. At this restaurant my husband had the Lobster pasta and I had the spinach/ricotta ravioli, and we both were beyond satisfied. We also had the artichoke as an appetizer, and trusted the waiter with his suggestion for a bottle of wine. He must have been some genius because the wine went well with our meal. The ambience was cozy and very family oriented, however, the rain outside made it romantic for us. Another key point for this restaurant and it traditional flare was that they brought out the olive oil and red vinegar for our salad and of course olive oil for our wonderful home-made bread. I'm so glad we chose this place for those of us Americans who understand culinary cuisine.

By the time we were seated, dozens of people were waiting behind us. We sipped an Aperol spritz and lemonade while we waited, chatting with fellow diners who raved about the restaurant. On a sweltering day, our kids were starting to struggle in the heat when the owner came outside and gave them mini pizzas breads. It was a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel welcome. Once seated, we ordered burrata, cacio e pepe, amatriciana pasta, pork chops, and fried artichokes. Everything was excellent, but the amatriciana was the standout--rich, savory, and unforgettable. The cacio e pepe was silky, the burrata fresh and creamy, the pork chops juicy, and the fried artichokes perfectly crisp. There's a reason people line up for Da Enzo. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere lively, and the hospitality remarkable. Without question, this was our best meal in Rome and one of our most memorable restaurant experiences.

The tomatoes were fresh and juicy but the burrata was a bit thick (referring to the outer aspect). Also the bread was a bit tough. The amatriciana was good, but not worth a 2 hour wait in a line, 7.5/10. Pasta was perfectly al dente, but the sauce wasn't anything to die for. I think you can get a very similar possibly better pasta in Rome without the wait. My girlfriend got the gnocchi pasta, which she said was a 7/10. The gnocchi was great, but again the sauce wasn't anything special Tiramisu, 10/10. This was amazing. It was sweet without being overpowering. The ladyfingers weren't soggy, and had that strong espresso taste. I would come back here just for this dessert. Also if you don't like cramped spaces, probably not the best spot. I could hear the people next to me better than I could hear the person across me haha.

Being new to Rome, and having walked 20k steps on our first day, there are an abundance of options a for dining. We wanted something classically Rome nearby to our hotel. The Yelp review of this restaurant was sufficiently positive to entice us. Being American, we appreciate the earlier-than-customary dining options. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is intimate and very well staffed. The wood fire oven is front-and-center and the fresh mozzarella is prominent in display. We ordered a bottle of wine ... all options are very fairly priced. This is nice. We started with a Greek salad to share. It was unlike any American Greek salad ... and a really delight. It is early June but the tomatoes and peppers were ripe and crisp and really fresh. My wife ordered the Marguerite pizza; I opted for the Gorgonzola pizza (the effusive review on Yelp was compelling). Both were solid. We appreciate the thin crust and the crisp edged. The center of both, however, was doughy and somewhat undercooked. Looking around ... the restaurant was over 50% full even at this early hour. Most were Americans. We saw a good number of diners with pasta dishes ... and none were left unfinished. Sadly, we don't have any comparisons to weigh (yet). So, I cannot affirm any "best of" citations, it this is certainly a solid trattoria/pizzeria. The staff are attentive and the food served hot and fresh.
