Their appetizers like fresh cut prosciutto were delicious. We enjoyed our pasta dishes very much. Carbonara was good over rigatoni. The shrimp scampi risotto was the best we ever tasted. The service staff forgot the artichoke appetizer we ordered so it never arrived but the waiter was apologetic and very understanding once we inquired about it. First day in Rome and we stumbled upon this restaurant. We picked it because all the tables outside were full and it was a busy place inside. It was about a 10 minute wait for a table. The staff was friendly with limited English but we were able to order and have a little bit of conversation with our server. Complimentary olives (with the pits) are served. Phenomenal Italian restaurant with amazing food and a cozy, intimate ambiance. I visited La Matriciana dal 1870 for dinner immediately after my plane landed in Rome, and it was such a delightful introduction to the city. The staff was incredibly inviting and friendly; there was a group of five or six servers standing by the front door as we entered, and they all gave us a hearty, warm "buonasera" before guiding us to a cute little side room with six small tables. The full restaurant is quite large, but I love that it was divided into several smaller spaces to create a more intimate dining experience. My friend and I both ordered a pasta dish (of course), and they were both phenomenal. The pasta was perfectly al dente and had absorbed so much flavor from our respective sauces. My friend ordered their rigatoni alla carbonara, and I got their linguini con spigola di mare e limone. The deep grooves and large hole in the center made the rigatoni the perfect shape to soak up all the rich, velvety carbonara sauce. It was super creamy and flavorful from the guanciale and egg yolks, and the black pepper and salty, slightly funky pecorino romano gave it a great bite. I loved my linguine; the pasta itself was perfectly cooked, and I loved the little chunks of sea bass. The fish gave the pasta a great umami, savory flavor, but the lemon kept the dish bright and from tasting fishy. We finished our meal with the semifreddo al pistachio, which was rich, slightly sweet, and so creamy. This is the food I expected from Italy. Now that I have learned that the first course is pasta, and the second course is meat, I am good. The service here was the best. My wife only wanted the Sea Bass & Potato's (second course), but I wanted Spaghetti (first course) and Lamb (second course). They were good enough to bring her fish with my spaghetti. Her Sea Bass was fillet, and they removed the skin of the bottom in front of her. She didn't have to eat any fish skin. I, had cheese on my spaghetti. when my server noticed that I had eaten through the layer with cheese, he brought me more cheese. He put the additional on the spaghetti, and left more for later. Top notch. The lamb came last, and it was the best. I called before they were open to see if I could get a seat at 7. They said come at 7:15. They still didn't have any seats, but they gave us a seat outside. Fortunately, it did not rain. Everything was magnificent. They offered me wine, but I requested a beer. It was their normal Italian beer. It tasted like my favorite beer home in the states. Here for my 4th day, and I finally find a dinner restaurant to rave about. I made a reservation online and then confirmed in person. This restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner. For dinner they open at 7 PM. We had a party of eight, so I wanted to ensure that we had a great table. The restaurant is definitely a scale. Our waiter was attentive and had an assistant towards the end. Everyone ordered something different, and everything was fresh. The ambience was nice as we had a table inside towards the back, and we tried the tiramisu cheesecake and crème brûlée for dessert, which were homemade, and all tasted fantastic! At this meal we learned that the authentic Italian way to have the state is to have it with all the fat because we were not accustomed to this. They took it off the bone and cut it and advise to ask for a different cut next time. If you are looking for an upscale meal, this is your place! read more

During our trip to Rome, there were so many restaurants to choose from to dine in. We walked past this restaurant and wanted to go in but we were told there was no availability. We ended up having to make a reservation for the following night. When we arrived the service was quick and good. The pasta was cooked perfectly and was yummy and filling. The drinks were also delicious (I'm a huge fan of Aperol spritz now). The dessert was EVERYTHING. And the restaurant had a nice fancy ambiance inside although many were dressed casually. Me and my wife ordered, the four Roman pasta dishes. The Matriciana, the cacio e pepe, the carbonara and alla griccia. None of them, were actually very good at all. Really an excellent experience here. We went because they had interesting local seafood, and loved the place for the excellent service and cooking. The grilled octopus I had was excellent, and the sea bass my wife had was great also. We added a side of spinach which was good, until you started tasting the different flavors layered on it. Visited again on my last trip to Roma, and this is still my absolute favorite restaurant in all of Italy. If you like truffles, you will find excellent truffle dishes here. Service is outstanding and the ambiance is top tier. I would advise calling at least a day ahead to make sure they will be open, and also to make a reservation. They take plenty of holidays off for their staff apparently - they are that good that business will come to them when they are open no matter what. read more

At first we didn't think anything of it (we recognize Americans are overly friendly), but when we saw how the waitstaff interacted with the locals/regulars it was a pretty stark comparison. They also reacted a big negatively when we decided not to order a dessert (after ordering a bottle of wine, several starters, entrees, etc). More importantly though, the food was just okay. It's started with the waiter bringing me a linguini with lobster and after further analysis I saw that the Lobster shell that came covered with linguine but was empty of any lobster, there was just linguine so I asked him where was the lobster and he said what do you mean it's in the sauce it's wont be in the shell. My daughter and I had both split this dish and we both were perplexed because there was a absolutley no lobster in the linguini at all. The waiter was pissed that we called him out and a bit aggressive after that, I have had linguine with lobster many times and usually there is a little bit of lobster in the pasta but most of it's in the shell in this case it was in either place. I think the waiters name was Ronaldo and at the end of the night he told me he was also expecting a tip and he was one of the only establishments in Rome that was licensed to receive tips- BS! What I did not like about the waiter is that he clearly was trying to BS me and convince me that the lobster was in the sauce when it wasn't insulting my intelligence. I have to say I didn't even get in the door or to a table before being told it was too early...I am traveling alone and was hungry so I went to L'Opera Cafe just the next resturant over. Food there was delicious. The next night I was here I purposely waited till I knew they were open and went back there just to give them a try as they are in the neighborhood of my B&B. This time the waiver looked at me as if he remembered me from the night before and immediately barked, "just one?" I said yes and he said oh no...its too hard! Situated next to our hotel, we couldn't resist to step in and see what they had to offer. The interior reminded me of the traditional restaurants you see in the Mafia movies. Best pasta fagioli I've ever eaten. Definitely worth a visit for an upscale trattoria for dinner when you are in Rome. I just told him to cancel it and he looked so relieved. When I ordered moscato to have with my dinner...he REFUSED to let me have it with my dinner. Yes I know it's a dessert wine but I prefer sweet wines with anything and everything. No....he wouldn't and flat out said no. I know we are in a foreign country but a paying customer is a paying customer. Either way food was mediocre at best and well we didn't even bother with dessert. I think for some people the prices may be a bit high, but if you're traveling Europe on a budget, what are you doing in Rome? Go to Romania. Seriously, it's very cheap, and a lovely place as well. Transylvania is like stepping back 100 years into the past. You need money to see cities like Rome, and Paris, and Vienna. Go somewhere else if you're poor, you're not entitled to a Roman holiday. Excellent experience at this classic restaurant. We ate there last night and made reservations to return tonight. Flavorful food, generous portions and excellent service. My husband ordered the sea bream and our waiter expertly removed the cooked fish from their bones. My husband was impressed by both the quality and taste of the fish as well as the waiters expert work with The deboning process. (And my husband is a hard one to please). My Bucatini alla Matriciana was firm yet perfectly cooked and the sauce was flavorful due to the fried pancetta in the sauce. The restaurant provided an olive app and a glass of limoncello complementary. Our waiter even provided guidance on limoncello making when I showed him pictures of my first batch produced this year and shared their recipe with me! Finally the house wine are a bargain at€2 or €4 a glass. My husband likes moscato wine and although it is considered a dessert wine and they were out of it but they were happy to provide him with a glass of their higher end dessert wine after him tasting and approving it. No up charges. Our total meal was €60 and included bread basket, olive appetizer, pasta dinner, sea bream with potato and tomato sides (most expensive item at €26), side order of roasted peppers, two glasses of wine, a liter bottle of water and two glasses of limoncello. Wow. Never have been treated so rudely in a restaurant. We are a family of 4 who arrived shortly after the restaurant opened for dinner and it was pretty much empty. We should have left after the greeting which seated us at the table in the foyer of the restaurant. We ordered still water upon seating. Then it took almost 20 min to be asked for a drink order and dinner order simultaneously. We ordered an appetizer which never arrived. Dinner came out within 15 min. And was incorrect. No apologies. My husband talked to the manager after we left to explain and his answer was that he didn't speak English. If you are Italian then you may be welcome. Otherwise steer clear. read more

The atmosphere and the waiters were the highlight of our visit. Where La Matriciana fell short was the food. The quality was fine, but the dishes lacked in flavor and execution. It seemed the kitchen was just going through the motions and didn't care to deliver a great food experience.
