I'm usually here at least twice a month. The have all the typical Italian menu items and are pretty quick when it comes to serving time. The staff is always helpful and nice which makes the experience even better. The amatriciana and carbonara alone earns them 5 stars on my end. However, I've since had the Bolognese and it didn't disappoint either. The ambience is definitely family friendly and family style. The portions can easily be shared and their house wine isn't bad either. I would suggest calling ahead for bigger parties but usually it won't be an issue as they have both indoor and outdoor seating. It's definitely one of my faves in the city and it feels even yummier after a long day sightseeing. read more

Would not recommend going here. We had terrible service the entire time; our waiter was very rude. We were given bread and charged for it at the end (€1/person). Additionally, they charge you €1/person for each drinking glass used. Since there were 6 of us, we were charged a total of 12 Euros for using glasses and the bread that we did not order. The food was very average, I was not blown away by any of the dishes. The ambiance was okay. We were seated at a very uncomfortable table with little room. This place was around the corner from our hotel in Rome and caught our eye when we would pass it on the way back to the hotel at night, they have outdoor and indoor seating, the ambiance is nice with nice staff, we got here on a Tuesday right around 7:30 and it was pretty empty inside, by 8:30 it was packed, we had the house wine and shared the Jewish style artichoke which was interesting and good, I ordered the carbonara, my wife had the gnocchi with pecorino and bacon, both dishes were very good and very rich, the bacon was thick and crispy, we also ordered a white pizza with broccoli and sausage, the food was all good, the service was good until it got busy, it seems like we were forgotten about, we waited forever for our pizza to come out, the waiter apologized and acknowledge he messed up and gave us a free dessert for our troubles, I didn't like being forgotten but the waiter was clearly busy and not just sitting around, I'd give this place another try. read more

3.5 stars I can imagine what locals go through while navigating the circus outside the Vatican. It's like a physically daunting sport: dodging lost looking tourists, weaving through your groups and the annoying people who try to sell you things you don't need. Seek refuge at L'isola, about 3 blocks away from the Musei Vaticani. The waiters speak excellent English but fear not! I spotted lots of locals who stopped by for lunch al fresco too. We loved the real Roman style pizza with thin crispy-chewy crust. Their pizza Napoli con capperi is filled with delicious capers and anchovies balanced with a sweet (gentle acidity) of tomato sauce and melty mozzarella di Buffala from Campania. The pappardelle alla cinghiale (wild boar) was perfectly al dente, but the meat needs some more time to soften up. Friendly service from our waiter, but we needed to remind him about our wine. Located between the Ottaviano Metro Stop and the Vatican Museum, we made a stop for some pizza and the "blood of Christ" before our exploration of the Vatican. Shaded patio area right in front, so great for people watching. Friendly, enthusiastic waiters. Ordered a bottle of the wine of the day, Syrah, and it was reasonably priced. Couple pizzas. I was disappointed with L'Isola della Pizza, because it wasn't the most authentic home style Italian food I was hoping for. The large dining rooms were filled to the brim by the end of our dinner, and it was hard not to trip on the way out: the décor was a hodgepodge of items from an old pasta-making machine to a real Vespa suspended from the ceiling, and bits and bobs popped out every which way. I will say, though, that the lentils were the best I've ever tasted. I don't know what was in them, but I would come back solely for those. While the noodles were lovingly prepared and al dente when they reached the table, my cacio e pepe was slightly watery and drippy at the bottom of the plate, and my partner's tomato sauce could have been more robust. We all shared appetizers (the spicy grilled vegetables, roasted fennel, and aforementioned soupy lentils were the best), and a few plates of focaccia to start. The owners and staff take great care in chatting with their customers, and proudly display photos taken with famous clients. I wish they'd take more care in their pasta sauces. Italian Excellence! After talking with our hotel concierge, he recommended a nearby restaurant that he adores ~ L'Isola! It was only a few blocks away from Hotel Alimandi which was perfect. It was a busy Sunday afternoon so it was really busy. We had only a 15 minute wait for one of the most amazing meals. Service gave us a warm Italian welcome from everyone we met. Not only did they offer outdoor dining, the expanse of the inside seated many dining patrons. It certainly enhanced our travel adventure. We started with the Crocchette di Patate which were little scrumptious potato bites. Our party of 4 shared the Diavola Pizza and Gorgonzola e Salsiccia Pizza. I believe every place we went had one size pizza unlike the US. This size easily fed all 4 of us. The fresh taste with the Italian flare was in every bite. The sausage on the gorgonzola pizza as well as the spicy meat on the diavola pizza couldn't make me happier! I can't forget to mention the Fettuccini alla Bolognese. I could eat this pasta dish everyday if I lived here. The bolognese sauce was a recipe of brilliance. I doubt they would give me the recipe so I will just keep the memory forever. I saw with my own eyes! They recycle the bread baskets and they do it out in the open. The pieces the other people don't eat goes into another basket for other unsuspecting customer and they charge you 2 Euro for terribly hard stale bread that is inedible. On this trip I learned to never eat any bread baskets in italy only bread from bakeries. Another thing I saw with my own eyes is they charged me a foreigner 15% service charge but not my next table of locals. I was looking over at my neighbors bill and I didn't see the same service charge line I had. As soon as I spoke up and asked my neighbor the waiter ran over and took his bill quickly. Shady! My neighbors then knew what had happened but there was nothing anyone could do. Apparently on their menu hidden states there is a 15 percent charge so if you do ask about it they just point to it, but they actually only bill that to the tourists. They obvi don't charge that to locals because if they did the locals would not return. It's not right that they pick and choose who they want to charge the service charge to, isn't that discrimination? We don't speak the language but our server was delightful and recommended the most classic Roman dishes on the menu so we could get a great experience in Rome. Got scammed! This place will RIP you off! Cane here with large group for dinner. Waiter brought no menus but asked if we'd like meat and cheese plates to start. We said yes, as we'd normally start this way. He brought meat and cheese but also many other appetizers that we really didnt want such as strong beans and coleslaw. Who wants that in Italy. We kind of let it slide thinking it was part of the antipasti. Then he brought more appetizers that we didn't want. At this point we stopped him, and he was annoyed. Still now menus. Now we were no longer hungry at eating all the appetizers. Long story short, they charged us over $500 for appetizers 2 bottles of wine and 3 pizzas and the bill was not itemized. Randomly stumbled upon this place after leaving the Vatican. Interesting interior and was fun to see a number of clergy dining there. But the food was overly salty and we were also charged the "tourist" 15% service fee in addition to the bread fee of 2 euro a person (there were 4 of us) for 2 slices of stale bread. Be careful! My husband and I had lunch there end of June 2022 on a hot day. We had the same experience as others who have posted reviews they got scammed. The waiter just kept brining food - antipasto items - and we ended up with 100 euro bill for lunch. It was all rushed and no time to review menu. We should have been more aggressive in asking prices no doubt. We asked for house wine and we were told no and given a bottle that was more money than most places. They were nice but patronizing to us as tourists and we left feeling scammed. The waiter even asked my husband for a cash tip which is not the case in Italy. They charge you a small service charge in Italy. We always tip too but this guy was clearly scamming us. It was our worst experience in Italy. Everywhere else we did not have this problem. read more

My wife and two daughters came here last year and recommended this pizza place for ravioli and lamb skewers. I brought my dad this place for lunch while doing a Vatican tour for his 80th birthday today. Then I felt something weird. I told the waiter that I wanted to sit outside and he said the table was reserved. We sat inside and another waiter came and he asked us if we wanted to sit inside or outside. I said outside. Then we encountered the first waiter and he said the same thing, it was reserved. Then they talked to each other for a second and the first waiter said to me, 'it was reserved for YOU!' The fishness of the server didn't end there. I ordered my food and my dad's...a ravioli and lamb skewers, which was recommended by my wife who visited here last year. When I ordered, I said lamb skewers several times, and he kept saying 'lamb' got it. And I thought he got it, but I was wrong. He brought something looked like lamb strips. I had no idea what it was but it was definitely more expensive than lamb skewers when I got the bill. Another surprise on the bill was a 15% mandatory service charge. When I asked about that, the waiter pointed out a small marking at the bottom corner of a dessert section says 'service charge'. Nowhere in the 15 page menu said it but only one which is in a 'dessert and coffee' section which I didn't even look! I demanded to talk to the manager and a female manager/owner came out and she treated me like dirt. Basically the whole crew came out and verbally attacked me and said never to come back. One guy gave me their business card and told me to remember not to come back. As I was trying politely to bring up some unpleasant experience, which definitely did NOT deserve a service charge, I was so surprised to see how the female owner/manager was treating her regular customers differently while basically telling me to go f**k myself just because I was not a local Italian customer. Total sum of money I paid was 39.68 euros just for two and I paid over 7 euros for nothing, 2 for the wrong food and 5.18 for the service charge. I didn't really expect to get any money back, but a little apology would have been nice. But all I got was plenty of nasty insults and laugh on my back. Today was my last day in Rome and I have a very bad taste in my mouth. I'm pretty certain that I would never come back here any more. read more

I had high hopes for this place. Right down the street from where we were staying and at check-in it was recommended to us when we arrived in Rome. We didn't eat there on our first night but we walked by it several times before our second night in town came around and it looked like a promising restaurant--crowded with tourists and locals alike it seemed. So on night #2 we arrived and had to wait about 10 minutes for an outside table. Not bad. But that was the shortest wait we had all night. I understand that European meals typically take longer but considering we only had 2 courses, it shouldn't have taken us 2+ hours. Also people that got seated after us were finished well before we were. I watched a couple sit down after we were halfway through our meal and get their appetizer and finally entrees right as I got my second course. The waiters were just friendly enough. Ours had a ready smile for us when he eventually made it back to our table each time but he was the king of avoiding eye contact when we needed something (like the correct entree we ordered) and not once came to check on us after food or drink was delivered, even though he was buzzing around the tables next to us. Several couples that spoke Italian around us didn't seem to have much of a problem with getting prompt and honest service. There were smiles and hugs and brief chats like they were old chums. Their food came out at the same time. Not ours. My wife ordered a pizza that was supposed to have buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes on it to accompany some prosciutto. I wish I would have taken a picture of the pizza because it had ONE cherry tomato in the center of it, three strips of prosciutto and no visible buffalo mozzarella. I've had pizzas with the latter numerous times and never has it been melted away completely that you couldn't see it. The manager was standing around so I got his attention and he explained that that was indeed what happened. The mozzarella had melted. When I finally flagged the waiter down after several attempts to get his explanation, he instead went and conferred with the manager in Italian and they confirmed that the pizza was the correct order. Being the trooper she is my wife said she would eat it anyways because she didn't want to send her food back. The pizza was decent, but certainly not what she ordered. Ten minutes pass after my wives pizza is brought out and I finally get the pasta I ordered as a first course. This is where they earned some points because this pasta I had seen pictures of and excited to try, Cacio e Pepe, was delicious. Pasta was al denti and flavors simple and tasty. It was a welcomed intermission to the poor meal we were having up until that point. Unfortunately my pleasant mood was about to change with the arrival of my second course. I've had chateaubriand numerous times back home at a local restaurant and I'm versed in fine dining enough to know that that specific cut of meat is meant to be as tender as a filet. Well, the cut I received as my entree was anything but tender. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I was served sirloin instead, passed off as chateaubriand. It was supposed to have bernaise sauce served with it and I had to flag down our waiter to remind him of that as well. Oh, and ask to be given a knife since they had neglected to do so when my tough piece of meat arrived. I just wanted to get out of there at this point since we'd already been seated 2 hours so I decided not to fuss about the steak. I just wanted the check (side note: they will bring your bread and even if you don't touch it and they take it away at the end of the meal, you will be charged 4€). We waited another 15 minutes patiently after our plates were taken away and we decided not to have dessert before our waiter even got close enough to us for me to catch his eye and then he rushed by my raised hand with my mouth open and told me to please wait. I'd already been waiting! Such a disappointment. I was really looking forward to my 3 dinners while here in Rome and to have such a terrible experience on night #2 honestly put a damper on the end of an otherwise amazing day of viewing the Coliseum and Vatican museums. If you choose to go to this place I hope you have better service than us. You've been warned. read more

Finding a decent restaurant near the Vatican (aka Tourist Central) is difficult, so my disappointment in L'Isola shouldn't be surprising. The calzone was the best item we had, but overall we were underwhelmed with the pasta. Even the prosciutto with melon was mediocre, avoid. read more

My hotel sent me to this restaurant and I did not know what to expect. It is a large, busy restaurant but I was seated quickly. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I had spaghetti alla gricia, which was delicious. For dessert, the ricotta tart was great. I was seated by to wood oven, where the meats were being grilled. I was seriously second guessing my choice of pasta! Also other people's pizzas looked, and smelled great. Most of the clientele seemed to be locals, but they treated me very well. This place was recommended to us by our guide because we were staying close by at an VRBO and close to Vatican City. All the food we ordered was so authentic and delicious. Few tourists but mostly Italians. Our waiter Francesco was very friendly and suggested different things off the menu. Start with the bruschetta and the mushroom dish.
