Then we all went with the beef wellington take - perfect medium rare steak, juicy, everything you can ask for. Flaky pastry with mushroom mixture. And finished the meal off with the flambe - you have to get this! Fire dessert, what's not to love? Definitely one of the more pricey restaurants in Richmond, but excellent food, small intimate quarters, interesting decorations (star wars plates on the wall are the highlights). I had the best birthday dinner ever here!! From the minute we entered the restaurant we were greeted by the host and received a happy birthday wish from the host. The meal was beyond fantastic!! My wife and I have travelled the world and this meal was beyond what we could have expected. The service was also impeccable. We never had to ask for anything. Don't be fooled by the closed curtains, they're open behind them! The restaurant is running in super dimmed light but very intimate. The interior design is definitely unique. We waited about 30 mins for a table of two on a holiday while sipping on our drinks at the waiting couch by the door. We sat by the bar and was welcomed by a nice bartender, the father of our delicious drinks (that gingery drink and a Hendricks martini extra dirty up were our favs) Food: Oysters for appetizers: I thought they were good but the spinach was over powering. I'd def try the other items on the menu next time. Pork belly and scallops: the citrus accent on top of the pork belly has made the soft pork belly so much better than it already is. I would recommend eating the pork belly separately from the scallops since they're so different in texture and flavor wise. The scallops are huge and and deliciously flavored in its own natural sweetness. Beef 'Swellington' is not a Beef Wellington since the name isn't Wellington but boy it was a nice piece of well seasoned and cooked piece of filet mignon!! Desserts: Creme brûlée: I wish there were two strawberries instead of one because the fruit makes the regular creme brûlée so much better! Something Pirate one: the drunken fruits were great in the soft and moist cake part. Although it was too sweet for my taste buds, it was a favorite of my partner's. My husband and I went here for our 10-yr anniversary dinner. Everything was perfect! The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and even accommodated our request to sit in a booth. They treated us with a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival, which was such a nice surprise. The food was outstanding. Some of the best dishes we've had. The drink menu did not disappoint! Truly a special occasion restaurant. When you enter it's clear that this is not a standard dining experience. The decor is whimsical and more than a bit flamboyant. The servers are knowledgeable and professional, and keep everything timed but not at all hurried. The cocktails are well crafted, but hit sweet to my taste, but very pleasant nonetheless. We had the fabrigè egg, and the escargot for appetizers. Amazingly well done,with a spectacular presentation. For entrees we had the swelling ton, and the pork cheeks. The beef in the Wellington was perfect and the Demi glacé was on point. I thought my pork cheek was a bit over done, but here in Richmond it seems as if most people expect things done a bit more than I prefer. The flavors though were wonderful. My boyfriend and I wanted to have a nice dinner in Richmond and we stumbled upon this restaurant while doing some online research beforehand. I made a reservation for 2 online - the only available seating that day was bar seating. It ended up being really nice - there is a transparent shield between the bartenders and those sitting at the bar - so you still get a nice view from a distance. The vibes in L'Opossum are really chic and chill. Funny in the sense that it comes off as classy/fancy but also very humorous at the same time. (take a look at the menu item names, you'll see what I mean). I appreciate all the thought put into the menu and the interior design. There is dim lighting and really interesting decor. It was a great chance to dress up a little for a nice dinner out. We enjoyed our drinks tremendously- as the waiter said, "this is the only restaurant where your drink will come with a jock strap". We ordered for cocktails the Laura Palmer and the Jock Snifter (grapefruit, guava flavors - so fruity but with a hint of sour, tropical flavors). I really loved the Laura Palmer, honestly can't explain the flavors but wow it was good. LES ESCARGOTS À LA HAM BISCUIT - this was my first time eating escargot and omg it was amazing. The texture!!! the flavors!! Soooo good especially dipping the escargot in the garlic sauce. COCKY YET CLASSIC AND SO VERY COMFY-COZY COQ AU VIN - whoa. I did not know that chicken could be THAT GOOD. A mix of white and dark meats, the chicken was super tender. For the dark meat, it was cooked to perfection and fell right off the bone. All the vegetables were so tasty, and had just the right amount of well-seasoned mashed potatoes, with the bacon giving everything a great added flavor too. FILET MIGNON OF BEEF "SWELLINGTON" - the steak was amazing. but jesus i cant stop thinking about that chicken yum Dessert - LAVENDER-LIMONCELLO Crème Brûlée - you really get the hints of lavender and lemon in this dessert. Was a great way to top off a delicious meal. We didn't order it but the chocolate dessert "EN FLAMBÉ" is a sight to see as they light it on fire! I loved the atmosphere here is much! Fun and eclectic and a great place to relax and have fun. The service from the time we walked in until we left was fantastic and some of the best I have ever had. We ordered the faberge egg appetizer and also the oyster appetizer and both were truly amazing. For dessert we got a chocolate flambé cake and the bundt cake and I wanted to marry them both, Now onto the main entree. We ordered the Beef Swellington. The steak was super moist and flavorful and we were very happy with it. The only disappointment was with the scallop meal. 4 scallops over this veggie soup/slaw mix. Did not have a lot of flavor so was pretty bland. The price was a bit high for the scallops and I don't love when scallops are not seared. More of a texture issue on my part but I did ask for them to be seared when I ordered. This was also more of a summer dish in my opinion. I wanted so badly to love it. I'm on my farewell tour of Richmond and this was my number 1 stop. I made the reservation weeks ago and spent the last week looking at pictures on Yelp analyzing every menu item. Maybe part of the problem is my expectations were set so high and that's what lead to it not quite meeting the mark. I start with the highlight of the night. 5/5 stars when it comes to service. Our waitress was truly so knowledgeable about everything on the menu from the wine to the food. She never rushed us and answered all 28467 questions my mom had before ordering. Now onto the food, we opted out of appetizers because it was my goodbye dinner and if it was socially acceptable I'd eat dessert for every meal so was saving up for the finale. For our entrees we got the steak and the crab cakes. Don't get me wrong, they were beautiful. The steak was cooked perfectly. The crab cakes were all meat, no filler. Good meals, just not great. Both were slightly under seasoned making it seem like they were missing something. For dessert we got the creme brûlée, hot bottom chocolate cake and apple tart (added ice cream). Once again, all good, just not great. The creme brûlée had great flavor but was somewhere between soup and yogurt consistency - it just needed to set up a little bit more. Wow! This place truly left us speechless. Our server, made for such a fun experience, and Erin, who specializes in wine was amazing as well. Even the host was friendly and helped out all night paying especially close attention to detail. After reading other reviews one thing that stands out is the lack of pallet experience some have with traditional French cooking . For instance when I read that the lobster bisque was tasteless or lacked flavor it a tell tell signs of an inexperienced palette. Virginians like myself are have come accustomed to creamy bisques with a heavier cream content . The lobster bisque I ordered was divine. Perfectly classically French prepared . Everyone was so friendly, the cocktails were *perfect*, salads on point, and for entrees we ordered the beef Wellington, crab cakes, halibut, and lobster Mac and cheese. Everything was incredible. Or maybe people are just to indulged in their food. But as a young hip female trying to find the best restaurant in Richmond I was determined. This place was rated high but the reviews were so scattered and old. That did not matter! The food and service has apparently remained the same for many years. David, our server was spectacular and gave great food and pairing recommendations. For a fancier dinner the serving sizes were impressive. I was on a date and neither of us has eaten at all that day. L'Opossum has been my go-to spot for special occasions. With all of our birthday dinners and anniversaries being cancelled due to COVID-19, my boyfriend and I decided to celebrate them all together and get L'Opossum for dinner. I can't speak for how the dining experience is at present since we just got takeout. However, I can say that the food is just as fabulous at home. We ordered two appetizers: the escargot and their seafood chowder and two entrées: the crab cakes and the Moroccan chicken. For dessert, we shared a slice of apple tarte tatin. Everything was as good as it had been in the past when dining in. I was highly impressed by how carefully they packed everything and how beautifully they managed to plate it. Tonight was my first night at L'Opossum and it definitely lived up to the hype! We started off with the foie gras sliders, the venison carpaccio, the escargot, and the French onion dip. By far, the best was the foie gras slider. Each person needs to order their own. Also, I highly recommend that it not be the very first bite you take, as the rest of the appetizers will quite not live up. I wish I had gotten a better photo of it. I did enjoy the other appetizers too, but would definitely choose the slider if I had to pick just one. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese and I opted to add the freshly shaved truffles. I was very happy with my choice. The fresh asparagus and chard balanced the richness so well and the cheese sauce was amazing! The lobster was buttery and tender and I felt like there was a good amount of lobster meat. The others that were with me got the beef swellington and quail which both looked amazing. We finished with the apple dessert, the crème brûlée, and the chocolate cake which all were delicious and so fresh tasting! Every time I'm planning to be in Richmond I reserve a table at L'Opposum. I'll always be a repeat customer, cause the flavors their food packs is some of the best I've experienced. Ordered the lamb shank last time which was "falling off the bone" juicy. This last time I ordered the filet mignon and it was equally as impressive. My girlfriend and I always get the foie gras since that's a treat only French restaurants seem to have. Best part of the dinner in my opinion. The server asked right at the beginning about food allergies and not only understood my situation but worked with me specifically to go over what I could have on the menu or what kind of substitute I could have. In fact, minus some of the desserts and the Lobster Mac and Cheese, they said that most things were already GF or could be easily adaptable. The servers also have the similar level of gusto that the menu shares, which is fun. --Atmosphere: It's a bit dark in there, a bit small, but overall feels nice. There are some unexpected plates on the wall of Star Wars characters, and the music is all over the place, in a good way. Oh, and there's a Buddy Christ with dinosaurs in the bathroom. *thumbs up* --Overall: Loved it. They have amazing craft cocktails as well however for three people be prepared to spend around $200. You absolutely need to make a reservation here. Also due to Covid. Off the back the location was different, this unassuming building grounded in a residential neighborhood, but it made sense. The exterior gave no hint to wonders that laid inside. Opening the door and pulling back the curtains felt like I discovered some secret place through the wardrobe. I throughly enjoyed eating here it was a place that was serious but didn't take itself seriously. Sam the bartender guided me down the path to glory. The Foie Gras slider was unlike any foie gras dish I have ever had. The flavors and textures were magic. It was a slider so it was eaten with all hands. The lobster Mac and cheese I was nervous about getting. I have tried a lot of them at different places and did not like them. So I was dubious. But I trusted Sam the sage and got it. It was fantastic. This lobster Mac was intentional from the noodles to the cheese sauce to the asparagus. Every piece of this dish was built to marry the lobster. My friend and I were looking forward to celebrating our birthdays and couldn't get out of there faster. We didn't even stay for dessert. We were seated next to the kitchen and the waitstaff so there was a lot of movement. We were right under the speaker screaming at each other. Every song seemed to be sped up x2 so we felt a lot of chaotic energy. The food was very bland/basic and overpriced. Swank Bank had no flavor. Swellington had ok flavor, but was very mediocre. The atmosphere felt like sensory overload. I wonder if we sat somewhere else would we have enjoyed it more. I'm upset to leave a poor review, but I had a very poor experience. L'Opposum is a favorite of the locals and has been for years, so a reservation in advance is necessary. Just entering the restaurant, which used to be an old biker bar and punk music venue, you feel like you stumbled upon a secret. The attention to detail in the decor (Puddles the clown? The stain glass window) is outdone by the attention to detail with the menu, from desserts that go unmatched by other restaurants (the lavender crème brûlée is my favorite of all time) to drinks that are Instagram-worthy (Laura Palmer Shirley temple with a glass wrapped in plastic- homage to the Twin Peaks tv show). I wish the place were larger but alas, the small footprint is exactly what keeps it as a neighborhood favorite. read more

We have been to several places like these and chefs usually accommodate our food restrictions. We were stuck with one options for starters, two for entrees, and one for dessert. -first of all the food took 1hr to come out. The food is not great it's okay. The filet mingion was the best thing. The scallops dish was wayyyy to salty. The dessert came in a warm plate meaning they just warmed it up. A French delight on China Street! Loved it. Looooooved it! Dark, sexy ambiance, adorned in deep dark reds and golds. Funky lights and decor throughout the venue. I had the "breakfast for dinner salad" and they somehow twisted my arm, and talked me into the special $18 black truffles from France, to be grated over the salad. The truffles did not have a very strong flavor, so I'm not sure it was a necessity, but the salad was fantastic with kale, beets, a poached egg, peppered bacon, pomegranate. and a light, yet creamy dressing. Also tasted the seared foie gras, which was incredibly flavorful and rich. Adorned in puréed butternut and fernet soaked apricots, I enjoyed it greatly. I had a refreshing gin cocktail, the "Laura Palmer". For dessert, I tried the violet and citrus creme brulee. Also delightful. A wonderful dining experience. We had all together the Escargots and Ham Biscuit, a crab appetizer (a special for the night), the Swank Bank, the Pork Cheek Stuffed Quail, and finished with the Foie Gras Bread Pudding. Escargot: SO flavorful and the biscuit was to die for. I don't say that often. Crab App: very reminiscent of something you get at Inn at Little Washington. Delish. Swank Bank: not as heavy as expected, but tons of food. Loaded with lobster, but I think the highlight is the Swiss chard mixed in. The one complaint I had was there was no presence of truffle in the sauce mornay, but my partner had no problem with that. Pork Cheek Stuffed Quail: so many layers of flavors that all complimented one another. The sweetbread that was included was tender and juicy. It also had a prawn on top, loaded with flavor. Went to L'Opossum for our anniversary dinner as suggested by the fine folks on the RVA dine Facebook page. Holy shit. Thank you. We went at 5, so it was still very bright outside. When we opened the door and peeled back the curtain, we were immediately transported into a dark eclectic world. If an opium den, your kitschy aunt who did LSD back in the day, Gustav Klimt, and a sexy circus all contributed the best parts of themselves, you would almost obtain the awesomeness of L'Opossums ambiance and decor. (The music in itself was worth coming for). Adjusting our eyes to this new inky world, we were warmly greeted by the host and immediately taken to our table. Our server David was fabulous. We started with a craft cocktail off the menu (The Safeword and Throwing Shade). Both packed a punch. Both were insanely delicious. For apps we went with LES ESCARGOTS À LA HAM BISCUIT (forgive the all caps, but I'm copying and pasting off their menu so I can type this before I enter my food coma) and the FABERGÉ EGG BÈDAZZLED WITH CAVIAR & DILL CURED SALMON. When I say I actually let out a tiny audible moan, having to restrain myself before I went full "When Harry Met Sally". The escargot was perfect. I love L'Opossum and COVID-19 canceled my dinner out. But just last week they re-opened and I was able to get takeout from them and I was not disappointed. We ordered online a few days ahead and then drove up at the time our order was ready. They just came outside and brought it to us masked and gloved. We got a cocktail and a bottle of wine. Both were really good and the cocktail came in a Grey Goose branded mason ball jar. That was a nice touch!! My crab cakes were delicious, huge and had zero filler. And the sauce was delicious. It was on a huge bed of sautéed spinach and they did not skimp!! Husband got their pulled pork platter and loved it. He said their cornbread was some of the best he has had. This is birthday spot! I love this restaurant and save it for special occasions or when friends are visiting.

My wife and I went to L'Possum on 5/23 after waiting 3 weeks for a reservation. It was a good/bad experience. I ordered the crab cakes, expecting a wonderful experience. As it turned out, these may be the worst crab cakes I have ever had for the price. A good crab cake should be lightly brown, soft, and flakey with just enough seasoning to enhance the crab. These were so overcooked that they were encrusted and very dense and dry. They appeared to have good quality crab, but the preparation was very disappointing. On the other hand, my wife's lobster Mac and cheese was outstanding. There was lots of lobster and the cream sauce was light and not overpowering. We also had the nightly special appetizer, which was outstanding. The service was also very good. read more
