Sadly - Friday June 20th 2025 the owners posted a message on Facebook that their delightful restaurant was not going to be open at this time. There was some discussion that the owners will come back with another concept at another time & date. We are saddened to see it go as their food was unforgettable and it's location on the spit central to the activities.
We stopped in early for breakfast and ordered chilaquiles with smoked salmon. The coffee is drip self serve. The chilaquiles were terrific and tasty - lighter than the traditional version that typically calls for chorizo! The service was great and we ate at the breakfast club's table since it was before 9:15 AM. The kitchen crew was calling out orders and playing great music behind the order counter. Every once in a while a song played and they all started singing. Very fun vibe. Looks like great sandwiches hot and cold on the menu, and you can get a breakfast or lunch box to go. Someone picked up an order for 20+ sandwiches while we were there. Also noticed they added fresh cookies and another goody to the display case. There are picnic tables for outside dining. Definitely worth a stop!
Oh man I think I have found my new favorite place to eat on the Homer Spit. The food was so fresh, and flavorful. Even my six year old finished his plate. Service was amazing. The staff were very friendly. Ambiance was amazing nothing like sitting in the restaurant and looking out over the ocean and the mountains. Definitely need to check this place out!!
Great spot for a quick breakfast. Was kind of sad that the next-door coffee wasn't open. They do offer drip coffee. I just really prefer cold brew. Staff was friendly and helpful. Sounds like they also offer to go lunchboxes if you you're going on a ship. Was happy to sit outside outside in the sun today as it's a gorgeous day in Homer
This is a great breakfast/lunch spot towards the end of the Spit. It's quite small inside, so count on waiting for a table or taking your order to go. After much deliberation my fiancé and I settled on a breakfast sandwich and eggs Benedict. But not before noshing on a blueberry sticky bun with our coffee! Everything tasted fresh and gourmet. I can't wait to come back.
The salmon clam chowder was terrific, really tasty. The salmon burger was good but I was not a fan of the bun, didn't have much taste and compressed easily. Salmon was good. Service was good.
Have enjoyed la Baliene for several years. Great food wonderful staff. A must stop for breakfast or lunch. You will be happy you did. We had Fisherman's breakfast, salmon eggs Benedict and a breakfast sandwich to start the day and everyone was very happy with their meal. If you want a fancy coffee stop next door at Barnacle Espresso. Otherwise just bottomless coffee is included with breakfast. Enjoy
Been here a couple times on visits to the Spit. Definitely one of the only and best full brunch spots out there. Food quality is solid, but nothing to get too excited over. On my most recent visit I had the breakfast skillet with the reindeer sausage. Both myself and another in our party who had the same dish commented about how salty it was. Not sure if it was the potatoes or everything, but it had way more than was needed. The eggs and veggies were good, but the sausage a bit underwhelming. Coffee has always been good, though a bit bummed they don't do anything decaf. Service always friendly as well.
Go! Go! Go! This is THE BEST cafe on the Homer Spit. Without question. Go! Lorraine and her team provide absolutely top-notch service! (Sweet lady, I hope I remembered your beams correctly. It's been a couple of weeks. I will be back!) I had to run in quickly to grab breakfast to go for a tour we had booked for the day. They were quick in turning it around and also in accommodating my dietary nuances. Even the packaging nuances needed. Our tour was going to be on a plane and we weren't going to be able to eat it for a couple of hours. We wanted it to stay hot and fresh, and also safe from spilling in our backpacks. They wrapped each part in its own containers and foil too. I ordered the burrito but made it a gluten free sandwich with scrambled eggs, no potatoes. They nailed it and it was divine! Everything there is made to order. If you have to wait 10 minutes- know it's worth it. The surprise was that our tour got cancelled, and the first thing we did was take our to-go order right back to the cafe so we could hang there, work some, plan our newly opened day, and soak it all in. It was so wonderful. The wifi was seamless, the coffee was delicious, and the food was still warm. We were only in Homer for 2 nights and for this cafe, I wish we could have stayed one more. I'll be back for sure. I didn't indulge, but the Bakery case was full of goodies. Gluten free carrot cake included! So many options! And, they even sell the day-old baked goods at a discount. I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

Simply outstanding combo of baked beans over toasted bread then layered with sautéed mushrooms, spinach and over medium egg (you select egg style) with beautifully cooked bacon on the side. This dish hits all the notes for a perfect breakfast/brunch plate. Service very friendly and efficient. While vacationing on the "Spit" other food establishments were tried and LaBaleine was definitely the best meal(s) enjoyed. So delicious.

Came here to get coffee and breakfast in the morning during our camping trip. The Barnacle Espresso place next to the cafe looks separate but it's the same establishment. The coffee was SUPER good! My husband and I both got 16oz coffees and the total was only $12 and we inhaled the coffees lol. In the cafe, we got the breakfast burrito which comes with potatoes, pico and green sauce for a total of $40. It was a pretty big burrito but was just okay. Not a blast of flavor like I was expecting based on how good the coffee was. The service was great, everyone was super kind and the food came out quick even with the morning rush during a holiday weekend! read more

We stopped here for breakfast our last day on the Homer Spit. We both had their special, which was French toast, potatoes, eggs and bacon. The food was very good and reasonably price. They also provide complementary coffee with breakfast. read more

I got the breakfast sandwich with bacon you can also get it vegetarian. Bread is soft and the greens give it a nice fresh taste. The shop is a little small with a couple tables inside but there is outside seating. read more

Food is soggy and gross. Cakefaces at the register obviously can't cook. There's a pride progress flag hanging on the front as well. Yeah it all checks out. I'd say stay in the kitchen but you can't cook either. read more

Delicious little cafe with a couple of vegetarian options, and some things that could potentially be made vegan. I have an egg allergy, so I couldn't have the veggie burger, but my friend who did says it was tasty, if a bit messy to eat. I would suggest a fork & knife approach. I got the Seasalt sandwich (with no mayo or coleslaw, as those both have eggs) and it was decent. The cream of mushroom soup was amazing (vegetarian, but not vegan or gluten free) and I was so blown away by the tasty curry fries that I had to order a side for myself in spite of already having the soup. I am not normally a curry person, but they are well seasoned :) Mr. Piano got the Alaskan Crab Melt, and it was good according to him. Place itself is cute, but smaller and may be tough to get a table for a larger group (we had six). Staff is friendly and they are reasonably quick. Overall, very lovely and I would eat here again :) read more

So delicious and excellent service. I got the Baleine Skillet and my significant other got the Fisherman's Breakfast. The coffee shop next door (Barnacle Espresso) seems to be run by the same people. Coffee was great too! read more
Absolutely, Positively, Incredible. If this place were in a "foodie" (I hate that word, but there it goes) city full of self-important, progressive, tolerant, easily-offended, white people...it would have lines out the door, every day. It's not though, it's in humble, halibuty, Homer. The food here is world-class and the prices are insanely reasonable. I have no idea how they do it. This is the best breakfast in all of Alaska, easily. And one of my favorite breakfasts I have ever had. I've only been here twice but both times I was blown away by the quality, the service, and the pricing. Lots of unique options, lots of fresh veggies (and you though they didn't exist up here!), and great coffee with lots of refills. If you're a vegetarian in Alaska...first of all: you must be starving, I'm sorry. Second of all: there are plenty of options for you here! Protip: if yer headin' out early on a fishin' boat, you can pick up a to-go lunch from this place, they open early! read more

Sometimes, I find that a restaurant's overall Yelp score doesn't accurately reflect my own personal tastes. That was definitely not the case for La Baleine in that my expectations were exceeded by a large margin. We ordered their ramen and crab melt. To start with the ramen, it was definitely lighter in flavor and body than I am typically accustomed to. But the broth and toppings combined offered up a strangely rejuvenating feeling that warmed my soul. I can't imagine there being anything more rewarding than this bowl on a rainy day. As for the flavor of the ramen, a dash or two of soy sauce really opened up the vegetal flavors. I usually hate seasoning my food at the table, but found this to be almost necessary. The crab melt was constructed beautifully. They somehow managed to get this avocado and cheese laden meal to taste satisfyingly light. It was a true exercise in restraint by how mild the flavor profile was. I imagined a large, greasy sandwich when ordering it, but ended up extremely impressed by how it turned out instead. As if Homer didn't already have an abundance of dining options to explore, I'd consider it to be an absolute necessity to visit La Baleine. Thanks for a great meal. read more

I'm glad I am here early in The season as it's obvious why this place is known to have lines. Wonderful staff- friendly and with interesting stories. I'm a talker and traveling alone and it was nice to hear a couple stories...I had the breakfast sandwich with bacon and it came with a side of fruit. Everything was hot, and fresh... I am not a huge bacon person but occasionally I eat it. I ate all of theirs, so for me it was awesome! There plenty of places to walk around and explore right there. read more

Delicious food - comfort food with local flavor, ingredients, and beautifully presented. Complimentary coffee and cocoa. A staff person brought my boys whipped cream to top their cocoa when she saw them making it. Great service for a place where you order from the counter. read more

The best breakfast I have possibly ever had. Such fresh ingredients and delicious flavors. I'm not sure what they did to the potatoes but they were phenomenal. If you are in Homer on the Spit definitely try breakfast or lunch you will not get any better. read more
