Entered the restaurant trying to order food to go. The restaurant was empty (not a good first sign when it's 5pm) No host, server etc in sight. All empty tables except for one elderly man eating. I walk towards the bar where there's a female bartender. I ask to see a menu and she immediately tells me that they only serve people for dine in and NOT to go. She points to the wall if I want to check out the menu. I walk over and it's just pictures of food. No prices and no descriptions of items. Overall, I got a bad vibe from this place. I can understand if you're an upscale restaurant, but a fast food style restaurant that doesn't serve takeout!? What a joke!! I would not recommend this place. And for reference, I did speak Spanish to the bartender. She was NOT welcoming at all. Never been to a restaurant that DETERS business away! read more

This is a cute restaurant, that serves up cuisine from El Salvador. I have never had better Papusas in my life!!! It is decorated kind of Hawaiian style, and they have regular tables and high bar stools and tables. It is small but it creates an intimate setting. They have Karaoke Friday and Saturday night, but from what I could tell from my visit there this past Saturday, the DJ guy is the only one that sings for the entire night. Fortunately, he was AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, he was singing to a group of people that couldn't begin to appreciate his talent...except for my drunk boyfriend that almost fell off of his barstool applauding his performance. People started dancing around 11:00pm, but it was just a few. They have "Suprema" beer which my boyfriend used to drink back in El Salvador and he was happy to find it again. I would recommend this restaurant and I plan to make this place a regular on my list. But be careful when you leave on a Saturday night though, there were a TON of police around. Drinking and driving in this area will get you a DUI for sure!!! Parking is in the center of Hawthorne Blvd...don't J-walk back to your car when the police are around...use the cross walk. I read some of the earlier reviews and most are spot on. This is more of a dive than a restaurant. The music is way too loud for a place to eat and enjoy your meal. The food is mediocre at best and I feel it's over priced. Hand made tortillas are decent. I was surprised that if you want "casamiento" instead of rice and beans they charge you extra. I mean casamiento is rice and beans mixed together!!!!! WTF???!!!! I was here for breakfast and before 11 the drunks had arrived and gave a good indication of this restaurant's customer base. Definitely not family friendly, at least not on a Saturday morning. I know at night they play music and have dancing. I think the reason they stay in business isn't the food, but more because of the booze sales and dive bar status in the neighborhood. My rating is really 2 1/2 stars. As such I won't be eating here again. Oooh and the kicker, they charge you extra for using plastic. If I could give zero stars I would, we've bought pupusas from here before without a problem but this last time we went they tasted really bad and when we told the workers and cook they assured us that they were good. How are you going to argue with me when I clearly tasted them and they weren't we've had them before so I'm telling them for a reason. They did not want to give us new ones or return us our money. WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I travel for business and have friends out here so when we decided to go eat we came here. First time and last time coming here. The food was good but the service is horrendous! The waitress does not have patience at all.. she would make a "omg hurry tf face" every time we would ask about a certain dish. Hello..! Friday at 6:00pm I called in an order of 4 bean & cheese popusas. The waitress said 30 to 45 minutes. I would say no but my wife wanted popusas. I waited 50 minutes, arrived at restaurant and there were to customers waiting for their to go orders and one at a table waiting for his meal. I told the waitress I was there for my order. She looked at me and went to the kitchen. Said something to the lady making popusas. They looked in my direction and the cook continued cooking. The waitress ignored me for the next ten minutes. So I left. I understand if they are busy or forgot to turn in my phone order from an hour ago, but can at least acknowledge the customer and say that they F'd up or at least say it will be ready soon. We were looking for a Mexican place and stopped at La Bamba. This is our first time at this location. The decor is interesting. Looks like a south of the border place, every t.v. was tuned to a different station and mostly Spanish. My husband ordered some k ind of pork dish, sorry I can't remember but it was so tender and delicious. This is my first time coming here. I really wanted to eat some pupuas. They were the worst. It had a very wired taste. I normally enjoy eating pupuas. I didn't enjoy eating them here. The worst part is that the staff here is very very rude. She was very disrespectful. We were sitting down in our table and she just came with a big fat attitude. So we ordered what we wanted. The colorful and tropical themed mural in the front of this restaurant has always intrigued me. A few days ago I missed a u-turn and fate and hunger brought me to the front door of La Bamba for a weekday lunch. I was looking for a place to avoid crowds and coworkers. I found it. Inside, the theme of the mural is continued. It feels like you are inside of an aquarium. The walls and ceiling is painted with an ocean theme. There are a variety of Hawaiian themed objects on the walls: surfboards, faux bamboo, and masks. But, there are also other themes on the walls: African masks and mobster movie/shows posters. The only light in the dining room was coming from a sky light. But, it provided soft lighting that further reinforced the feeling of being within an aquarium. I like the cozy feel. It feels like the perfect place for a secret rendezvous. There were a few patrons. It felt like the other diners were regulars as they had a rapport with the waitress. I noticed it says that it has pupusas and other Salvadoran dishes. This confused me a bit because I thought La Bamba was a reference to a Mexican folk song and dance. I had some dishes that were good enough. The waitress was friendly enough. It was all good enough. Final note: it would help if you speak Spanish. I have only been there for the music and dance on the weekends usually after 10pm and usually enjoy the place. Good crowd. Place is small so gets crowded pretty quick. Quick Review: Pupusas that are 99 cents Mon-Thurs are only the Revueltas (Pork and Cheese). When I went they did not serve us any water in cups, we had to buy them in water bottle form. Any restaurant that does this is not okay in my book. Extended Review I feel like this place wants you to pay more money without you knowing. There's a sign outside that says Pupusas 99cents from Mon-Thurs. When we ordered they did not tell us which ones were 99cents. We then asked for water and again she did not tell us we had to pay for them and just brought us water bottles and left. We called the waitress over and asked if theres a charge for it and she said there was. The pupusas were just okay to me. They were a little greasier then I wanted them to be. The cortido was very good and came in a nice jar with nice tongs that allows you to grab it easily. The squirt bottle for the sauce had a really tiny hole so sometimes it got stuck and it had a hard time coming out. The environment was more like a bar area and less restaurant-y. Tried this place because I tasted a pupusa my daughter brought home from there and it was delicous. We decided to try it because we figured you can't go wrong with $1 pupusas. . Was I WRONG! ! First of all this place looks and smells like a bar.. Second, we sat down and the waitress took about 5 minutes to come and greet us.. There was only one other table besides ours and 2 men at the bar... she was just standing behind the bar starring at us.. again, we decided to just try this place since we were already there.. Not only was the service SLOW 40 minutes to get 10 pupusas and 2 ceviche tostadas (the other table already had their food).. The pupusas are not even mediocre! They're horrible. We got Revuelta and cheese.. The curtido tasted like nothing but Orégano. The tomato sauce tasted like water and the ensalada drink was mediocre at best.. Lastly, after we received our food not one waitress returned to our table (there were 3 by then) we waited 30 minutes for our check and would have waited longer had we not flagged her down and asked for it. My 17 year old walks home from school with her friends every day, and they stop here for pupusas every now and then. Now, I've never had pupusas before and have been wanting to try one. So RibMan and I stopped in today to give it a try. How fabulous! Now it must be said that we were served by the owner, (because he is the only one there who speaks English, and we are way to white to look like we might speak Spanish) and he was extremely helpful. He made recommendations and we took them. And if we looked at all hesitant, he offered it on the house if we didn't like it. So, here is what we had... Horchata (my choice) ----just ok. not the best Ensalada, a fruit drink ---Wonderful, we ordered a second one Pupusa loroca--Delicious, hot and cheesy, with just a bit of an herby taste that was delicate, and perfect with the Ensalada drink. Hen soup (Which I never would have ordered on my own) ---Delicious. A delicate chicken flavored broth with carrots and potato and rice. RibMan got the neck. A chicken quarter with rice and lettuce/tomato/radish was served along side. A yucca dish never materialized. Apparently the leaves were not fresh enough to use. If we are willing to wait an extra 5 minutes he will send some one to the store to get some fresh. Major apologies. How sweet, but we are not quite that laid back. He suggests instead a (dang I can't remember what its called) deep fried meat and cheese thingy, which is good, too. Everything was fresh and hot, and seved with a delicious pickled cabbage. Also available: plenty of lime, hot sauces, tomato sauce, and a delicious orange sauce for the chips. Beer and wine are available, and if you order a bunch the beer will come to the table in a bin of ice. Nice touch! In reading over my reviews the other day, I realized what a sour-puss I am getting to be. Maybe I am only writing when I feel cranky about things. I've been coming to this pupuseria for 10 years and this is the first time they have hired a rude lady that answers the phone to take orders I wanted to order 2 caldos de gallina with leg and thigh and she had the nerve to tell me that she was NOT gonna give me my request if I wanted one leg and thigh and one breast then she could take my order and if if not she was not gonna take my order, so I asked why if I never had a problem ordering that in the past and she said that, that's was the past and that now it was like that and she became more rude and said "we not only gonna sell leg and thigh what do you think we gonna stay with all of breast?"
