Food was not good but the service was not so bad. I don't recommend if you were from out of town.

I've been lucky enough to come twice now while on vacation to jjacques and both times were exceptional, I also funnily enough sat at the exact same table both times. The service and staff and excellent - they give great recommendations, are funny and just make you feel taken care of. Shout-out to Nathan our waiter who spoke in EN for half the table and FR for the other half haha. He was so fun! The first time I came here was with my husband and we had a lovely dinner - the salmon blinis were our fave so I knew when I was here the second time, they were a must! The second time, there were six of us so we ordered quite a bit - we had the salmon blinis with caviar, a few oysters, the cod fritters, the prawn cocktail, the mushroom tortellini, flounder crudo, and whole fried fish - for dessert we did a cheese plate with some delicious local cheese. Everything was delicious - the whole fish is a must - the skin is so crispy and tasty - has a lot of Vietnamese flavours. The cocktails are also fabulous here - I had the Mexican Firing Squad and the Jungle Bird - both delicious and easy to drink! The room itself reminds me of a cool speakeasy bar/resto you'd find in the streets of New York City. It's hidden in an alleyway behind a very unassuming door. It's all part of the magic of the restaurant. If there is one place to go for dinner in QC, go here. We booked a reso in advance and I recommend you do this to secure your spot!

The staff were all very great in explaining everything about the menu. For example, if you want the beef Tomahawk ($145), they told you to order it now since it'll be a 45 minute wait. We started off with 24 oysters ($72) as we love oysters. They had different type of oysters and we enjoyed the east coast oysters. My favorite dishes that we ordered were the seared scallops ($42) and the Butterfish Tataki ($22). We were a bit disappointed in the Crab Rotolo ($36) as we didn't enjoy the combination of the sauce and crab. The scallops were cooked very well and we loved the sauce for the Tataki. The Vitello Tonnato ($22) and Cod Fritters ($15) were decent but not as good in comparison to our favorites. We throughly enjoyed our dinner here as we had a good time trying all the food and mocktails they offered.

We had a reservation for 6, and we got seated in a MASSIVE booth/table that could easily fit 10ppl. A little awkward but not a deal breaker. We ordered a few drinks and a bottle of wine to share among us which came out quickly with the apps. While waiting for the entrees, our wine got warm as there wasn't an ice bucket that was given to us but wouldn't matter much because we finished our drinks by the time the food came out. The entrees were not as good- combination of personal preference and the way it was cooked. For the pasta, I thought it would be noodle shaped but it was shells- kinda a disappointment. A friend ordered the pork and shrimp plate and was told it was very dry/overcooked overall. The veggies side was what we talked about after the meal with how good it was. Not sure if I'll be coming back but they do have a rotating menu so hopefully there are better dishes coming up.

With the dynamic trio of Philippe Racine, Philippe Fournier, and Andréa Beauseigle at the helm, this newly minted bistro is not just a meal; it's an experience that speaks to the heart of local gastronomy. As we stepped into the inviting atmosphere of Bistro St. Malo, we were immediately struck by the relaxed ambience that feels both chic and comforting. The decor is a perfect marriage of rustic elegance and modern flair, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening. The menu, crafted with both passion and precision, beckoned us to explore a variety of tempting dishes. We kicked off our culinary journey with the Mussels Marinière, bathed in a heavenly concoction of wine and garlic. Each bite was a succulent reminder of the sea, perfectly paired with crusty bread that could easily become a new best friend. Next on the list was the Soupe à l'Oignon, a classic French onion soup that was nothing short of a warm hug in a bowl. The rich broth, adorned with a gooey layer of melted cheese, transported us straight to a cozy Parisian bistro. Now, if you think escargots are just a fancy way to say "snails," think again. The Escargots Gratinés at Bistro St. Malo are a revelation, baked to perfection with a garlicky herb butter that made us rethink our long-held beliefs about these little treasures. For the main event, we indulged in the Joue de Bœuf sauce Robert, a sous-vide masterpiece that had been lovingly cooked for 30 hours. The beef cheek was so tender it practically melted on the fork, paired with a creamy potato purée and vegetables roasted in duck fat--a dish that could make even the most steadfast vegetarian reconsider their choices. We couldn't resist diving into the Ragoût de la Mer, a seafood stew that was a celebration of the ocean's bounty. With scallops, shrimp, lobster, cod, tuna, and salmon mingling in a rich bisque, this dish was a symphony of flavors that sang the praises of the fresh local products so central to the bistro's philosophy. Bistro St. Malo is more than just a meal; it's a culinary journey that pays homage to both French tradition and the vibrant tastes of the Mediterranean. If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Quebec City, do yourself a favor and make your way to 75 St-Paul Street. You might just discover your new favorite dining spot.

The pear martini with gin was bright and elegant, lightly sweet with a clean botanical finish that felt refined rather than sugary. The MSG with mezcal cocktail brought a smoky, adventurous character with depth and balance that made it stand out. The chili con carne was pure comfort. Rich, slow-cooked flavor, hearty without being heavy, and perfectly complemented by fresh greens and crisp bread. What truly elevated the experience was the amazing service from our waitress. Great French Bistro experience off Rue St. Jean…read more Food, service, & ambiance was great, the owner Louis is a great photographer as well. LOL. Started with a few favorites from the fabulous waitress who took great care to go over the menu with my group before we ordered. The French Onion and Creamy Tomato were both excellent. In particular, the French Onion might be the best iteration I've ever had. The crusted cheesy, bready top held up well to savory broth and caramelized onions. The Buvette, Tartare, and Escargot were all also very delicious. The Buvette was tender and beefy on top of a bed of cream of corn, roasted corn and tomato caramel for a slight sweetness. The Tartare was a classic rendition, beefy and mustardy, and one of the few times I've had tartare that was filling. After our meal I was snapping a photo of the restaurant and the owner Louis saw me and took a few photos for me. He's an excellent photographer as well!
