Made our way to the island for a little workcation. We love La Belle on Davie in Vancouver - best poutine in the city. We were staying real close to La Belle in Victoria so we got it to-go the night we got in. This La Belle isn't the best for sitting in, very few chairs and the ambience isn't great. So we took ours to go. Mine one qualm is the to-go vehicle - the fries got really soggy before we got to the house because of the steam and how tightly they packed it. Now don't get me wrong, the gravy and the curds, on point as per usual! Just wish the fries still had some crispiness to them still. If they had abit more of place to sit, we for sure would have just eaten in to maintain the integrity of the pout. Was I still satisfied? Yes. Maybe they can switch to a better to go vehicle. At the Davie location they served my poutine in a cardboard box that could breathe a bit better. Recommend switching to that if possible! read more

Used to come here frequently with friends and family for their excellent smoked meat sandwiches-----no longer on the menu ! They had something unique and then discontinue it. I think they are just too lazy to have to slice brisket and put it on bread. This place is not that clean and the people are not that friendly and expensive. So, they have lost another customer as I can get hot dogs and hamburgers anywhere these days. read more

The staff were extremely kind during our visit and remembered our order perfectly even though it was quite busy and they appeared to be going off just memory. Hands down, the best fries in Victoria! They're just as good, if not better, than in La belle province, where I live. They make a mean poutine (see pic) and the steamed hotdogs are addictive. We just had a taste of real Canada, and it was amazing! We've eaten at dozens of different restaurants in Victoria and this is the first we've taken time to review. The small eatery is authentic Quebec. We feasted on the best poutine we've ever had (the brown rich gravy was delicious!) along with the melted 'squeaky" cheese and some spruce beer, made right on site. It wasn't overly sweet, but had a lovely depth of flavor. Matti and Josue were gracious and hospitable hosts, even filling up our take-away box with more poutine! There was indoor and outdoor seating. We are from the western United States, so we love our potatoes and gravy. Never thought we would find something even better, thank you! The hot dogs were completely legit classic Montreal style hot dogs. Poutine was tasty but the fry grease hasn't been changed since Expo 67' overly dark (yes I know Montreal style fries are notoriously greasy). Perhaps one unintended consequence of legalizing marijuana is quality of service at the Belle Patate. The dudes behind the counter took 4 tries to get my order taken and it took quite a while. They messed up two other orders while we were waiting. The lifts at Whistler miss these stoners. read more

Friendly as all get out! Walk in the door and the staff were ready to help. Being here for the first time they helped me decide what would be best with my large group. They even filled our water bottles for us. The steamies were just right for my little ones and the price was right. The slaw on them is made in house and is perfectly sweet. The smoked meat was delicious, pickle included. We went with the Rob Special which was poutine with chicken and mushrooms. Little unorthodox but it was solid although a little light on gravy. You need to adjust your eating pattern to make sure you have gravy through the entire large. The few letdowns were minor. First off they were out of Spruce Beer. Popular I guess. Second the space of fairly small so large groups at a little hard to seat. Finally, they are the epitome of the greasy spoon. The interior is well worn. We are French-Canadians who visit every year from Southern California. No trip is complete without our Tuesday special visit to Matty and La Belle Patate. If you've ever been to Top Dog in Berkeley you will get the same vibe, only Quebequois-style. I have had streamies, poutine, and Spruce Beer (it's a soda that tastes like drinking a Christmas tree). It's always the same and we love it. It's a short drive from Victoria on Esquimalt road. It's authentic as it gets and family run too. If you've never had poutine, it's very filling. My friend makes a long trek across town to get his poutine here and brought me along. I had the poutine with pepperoni, green bell peppers, and mushrooms (and cheese and gravy of course). When we arrived there were ~ 30 high school kids doing their yearly trip to La Belle Patate. This is the only place to go for Poutine in Western Canada. Awesome poutine made by with fresh cut fries, super squeaking curds and brown sauce. You'll see the same guy and his crew there almost always. I always have the Poutine with Smoke Meat and a Spruce Beer along with one or two All-Dressed Steamies. Go with a real appetite and stuff yourself crazy. The burgers are supposed to be incredible too but I cannot say no to the Poutine and Steamies in order to make room. I have been going there for years and the owner remembers me every time whether it has been months or days since I've seen him last. Smoke meat could only be improved by the delicious sourdough rye used in Montreal. And long live steamies!!! Now that I'm living in Edmonton, I'm somewhat wistful for La Belle Patate. I used to live a block away from here and it served as my crutch whenever I was too lazy, tired, or depressed to actually make something healthy for dinner. The fries are thick, fresh, and crispy. The cheese curds are large and squeaky. And the gravy is wheat based and vegetarian. Snobby Quebeckers will likely scoff at this place, but as I've never been to Quebec or had "real" poutine, I don't really care. Burgers are decent, but still of the much-too-well-done Canadian variety. And regarding the Poutines, I'd skip the smoked meat, but go for the Chicken and Pea variety. Also, if you've never had Birch Beer, make sure to try it once. La Belle Patate imports it from Quebec. read more

I wanted to like this place better - a diner-style food joint with a specialty in poutine sounded pretty great. But it was only so-so. Between the three of us we tried the chicken poutine, the classic poutine and a loaded hot dog (with onion, bacon, cheese and coleslaw). The hot dog bun was soggy, the wiener seemed boiled (would be much better if they split and grilled it), the bacon was overcooked, the cheese was processed. The poutine was a bit better - decent gravy, very good fries. The curds were authentic and squeaky and good, but to maximize the melty deliciousness of poutine, they'd have to be smaller than the very large curds you get here. The atmosphere is basically like someone's laundry room. And the part that really sucked, was that it was a warm summer night, so we took one of the outside tables. We were in the middle of eating our food when the two employees came outside, sat at another table 6 feet from us, and both smoked. ....mmm, secondhand smoke with my food. Don't you people have a back door you can smoke out of, with a milk crate to sit on? That's how every other restaurant I know lets their staff smoke. NOT right next to paying/eating guests. It was kind of gross. Two stars instead of one, purely because the poutine was pretty decent. But next time, I'd get it to go, and it's the only thing I'd get off the menu. read more

Not the prettiest interior to be eating but the poutine is pretty good. The fries are crispy and cut to the right thickness and the gravy is rich and ladled on heavily (a bit too heavily) but the curds are a bit too large and thus don't melt easily. This was my 3rd trip to Canada and so far this has been the best place I have eaten at, as well as the most affordable. That combination is 5 stars automatically on my scorecard. I had the La Belle Burger and a medium regular poutine. Both were HUGE and I almost was unable to finish. The staff was amazingly friendly and they made me feel at home. I had originally tried poutine at New York Fries in Vancouver and hated it, vowing to never try it again, but I heard so much about this place that I had to give it a second chance; best decision I could have made. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Yikes! There is no doubt that the place could use a total reno (eg. how about a Habs themed tribute joint), but ultimately it is all about the food at this place. SERVICE: Excellent. Fast & friendly with a large helping of casual. FOOD: Let me just say, as a person of French-Canadian heritage, the curds aren't suppose to melt all into the gravy and fries. Poutine curds are meant to be enjoyed WITH the gravy and fries and should be just soft around the edges while maintaining the quintessential squeaky middle. On this technically La Belle Patate emerges victorious! My only small criticism of their otherwise marvelous poutine is that the gravy hasn't got quite the kick to it that it should have. The rest of the menu reads like a true Quebecois greasy spoon and tastes every bit the part. Excellent smoked meat sandwich and every meal is well served with imported Spruce Beer. PRICE: Personally, I find the prices here a little bit too high on the single serving of Poutine. You are better off paying a fraction more and getting the larger servings. The smoked meat, burger, hot dog, etc. are all just where they should be and worth every penny. The Spruce Beer, although mouth-watering, is way too expensive and not worth buying any more than once, just to say you've tried it. BOTTOM LINE: Your stomach will go home happy and so will your wallet, just make sure you get it "...pour allez." read more

The burgers here are big and generous, and the fries are lovely - and the price is right. This is a lovely family staffed restaurant, that has been successfully serving comfort food fare for 10 years. The location is right off the main route through Esquimalt. Immediately I was welcomed with kindness, and a jovial staff that guided me through the great variety of poutine and sandwich options available at this little diner. The eclectic decor and the window seating also provides the option to enjoy the view of busy streets outside while you eat. They also cater quickly to those on the go. I had the poutine and found the gravy delicious, the cheese curds were decently portioned, and fries were okay, but not crispy. I definitely found the service welcoming and efficient, but I may try a sandwich the next time I visit. A side note: I do caution those parking in the area as it is limited and the confection store next door has aggressively posted towing signs for those looking to park in undesignated spots next to the restaurant. Arrived at la belle patate at 8:30pm on Saturday January 13, 2018. The hours on the door said it closes at 10pm and the light up "open" sign was still lit but when we walked in the guy behind the counter said they decided to close early had turned off the grill and we couldn't get a burger...... 1 and a half hours before listed closing time!!!! This is just bad business procedure! Will probably never go back again...... So we drove to big wheel burger and got the royal treatment there and burger were just as comparable! Another great breakfast spot in Victoria. Tiny, friendly, with tasty food. I had a waffle and ham Benedict. The waffle was savory rather than sweet. the poached eggs were cooked perfectly. My only complaint was too much hollandaise and average deli ham. Other than that, they had wonderful tea and tasty coffee. read more

We're visiting from the states and just happened upon LaBelle Patate because it had good Yelp reviews and was close to our hotel. We are so glad we stopped in! Always dissapointing. After our first horrid experience years ago, we relented today out of hunger & convenience, to try a simple order of fries. It was shortly after 4 pm today, and the place was empty. We ordered a medium fries to go. We were given the child's size small instead. Upon leaving, the "cook" informs us that she didn't bother to salt the fries. Fantastic. Then, upon trying to eat, we found THE WORST FRIES we have ever had. Seriously, how hard is it to fry potatoes properly at a Poutine restaurant? The fries were soft, soggy and strangely dark brown. The amount of oil was astounding. French fries are supposed to be crispy. They are clearly cooking in oil that is neither hot enough or clean. At 4 pm you would think there is no excuse for this. Never again. Posting pictures for everyone to see. People should check out the new Saigon grill restaurant next door. Now that's a good restaurant. read more
