It's located right next to the harbor, so you can see the boats and the water as you eat. You order at a walk-up window, and the employees are so nice. I say potato, you say po-tah-to, I will take it any way as it is so versatile. If I find myself in Canada, poutine is a must. Although there are many variations with different toppings these days, just like poke, my favorite way is still the classic Quebecoise poutine just loaded with squeaky curds and gravy. I haven't had poutine since moving from Detroit a year ago. Seeing a place named "L'Authentique" - well, it has to be good right? This restaurant is essentially a small shack on the waterfront level with some outdoor picnic table seating. It's conveniently located next to a large pay lot, so there's plenty of parking. When we stopped by after driving off the ferry on a Friday evening, it was relatively quiet and we were able to place our order with only one party ahead. Since the fries are freshly fried, it took a couple of minutes to assemble. Classic Poutine, Large ($15 CAD) - As a classic poutine, this is a pretty simple dish. The fries are clearly fresh cut, with even a little potato heel in the mix. They are cleanly double fried, allowing the requisite tenderness on the interior combined with the crisp exterior, even holding up to the gravy poured over the top. The gravy is pretty standard. It seems to be from a powdered base, so it's mainly there to contribute sodium rather than any robust beefy or vegetal flavors. They add a ton of cheese curds on top, enough to cover the entire surface of the metal tray the poutine comes in. The curds are fresh, milky tasting, and fabulously squeaky. They are still distinct with some substance instead of being melted into a puddle from the hot gravy. (4/5) While I can't really compare L'Authentique to anything in Montreal (seeing that I've never visited), I thought it was pretty good. i ordered my poutine over the phone because i was on a time limit and needed to grab it quickly. it was made very quickly and it smelled amazing before i could even peek into my bag. i thought the price was pretty steep until i opened my box and realized it was packed to the brim. as a first time poutine-tryer, i have never had this flavor before. i love the melty cheese and the addition of ham. unfortunately, i didn't get to eat it while it was fresh, so i can't give a completely accurate review of the texture, but i still enjoyed it a lot. read more

We just shared a Poutine review. Bookmarked this as a possibility for a snack while in Victoria for the day on a cruise stop. My wife noticed it listed as a food truck. It a little more permanent than that. It's down at dock level underneath a popular restaurant. They had about ten outdoor tables and benches about a 100 yards from the water. Not a great view but nice exposure to the beautiful late September day. Very Friendly young lady took our order. She explained what Montreal Smoked meat was and added that to our large order. Requested well done fries. The meat was amazing. The curds chewy and gooey. The well flavored brown gravy was hot and cold. Not sure if it was the weather or perhaps cheese creating the difference. Yay! Finally a poutine that isn't stupid salty and so fresh and flavorful! Service was pleasant and quick. Easy downtown location on the wharf and wee birds politely waiting for remnants after people left. Lots of locals waiting on their lunch. The most pillowy cheese burger I've ever eaten, ordered as listed. The curds aren't as salty as the ones we've had elsewhere (and bought at Costco) and the fries were fresh and hot, even a random steak fry made an appearance! So why WOULFN'T you eat Poutine on Canada Day, eh? I was so excited to see they opened at 11! According to my app it was a 10 minute walk from where we were, and it was 10:57. Hurry!! We were about the 3rd customer of the day (fresh oil!) and, although the burgers were highly recommended, we were here for one thing only!! Now I have to admit there was some fear and trepidation on my hubby's part. He'd never had poutine before and he was afraid it was going to be a dish worse than biscuits and gravy. But he was pleasantly surprised! Fries were fairly crispy (but really small), the gravy was tasty and just proportioned right, cheese curds were very fresh and just getting melty. BUT the true glory came in the form of the smoked meat on top. We had ordered the Montreal and I was so glad we did!! Oh Canada, that was amazing. So flavorful, so tender... next time I'll ask for a double dose of it. The server was super friendly and our food was cooked to order and delivered to our table on the little outside patio. Parking was a situation, and the maps doesn't shows there's a lot next to the place so be aware, if you're visiting from somewhere else. Looked around and couldn't find the place for starters (It's downstairs on the left side of the main building, sign was hard to spot) before I was aware of the seasonally hours, shows as a #1 recommended spot but they're closed. Never had Poutine so I decided to try it out. I think it's an acquired taste but I ate it but prefer the plain fries. They double fry their french fries so they're very tasty. The flavours were delicious, and it was very comforting. It reminded me of the excellent poutine I had in Montreal. The atmosphere was made more enjoyable by the big picnic tables, and the view of the harbour. In addition, the service was great!
