A very fun dinner experience in an underground restaurant. They prefer if you have reservations, but can sometimes accommodate walk ins when it's not crowded or if you go early. The service is a little bit on the slower side, but each dish comes out plated very well. They have a good variety of dishes and the portion sizes are decent for sharing. Some of the fish dishes fell on the saltier side, but their texture and cook time were perfect. The desserts were excellent and my favorite was the chocolate coulant. I celebrated my birthday in Madrid and chose Bodega de los Secretos for dinner! It was truly a perfect experience. The restaurant is built into old wine caves. The majority of tables are in their own little alcove making it very private and romantic. My husband and I felt like we were secluded in our little space. We started with delicious glasses of wine and the amuse Bouche (they do charge for this, 2 euro per person). We shared the butterfish and arroz in a creamy red sauce with seafood. The food was delicious! We ended the meal with a light and airy cheesecake. They added a candle for my celebration! We were amazed that this entire meal came out to only about $60! Wild! It was such a delicious meal and such a gorgeous setting, especially for the price. read more

An interesting subterranean environment that has served previously as a wine cellar and a bomb shelter. The restaurant opened promptly at 8 and we were shown to our table, The service overall was a bit disjointed. There were many visits to the table to ask the same questions. And our requests seemed to take a lot of time to address. The food was interesting and had good flavor. Perhaps it was a bit oversalted. The acoustics of the of the cellar allow for a lot of sound transfer. And in our case there were some very loud groups that diminished the enjoyment. read more

As others have said, this location is amazing as it's "carved" out of an old wine cellar with an amazing history. Each table is tucked into it's own alcove with bright lights and a cozy feeling. Reservations are hard to come by so plan ahead. My party of four got a late lunch slot on a Friday. As we had very limited Spanish, we had a bit of a wait for a server who could assist us. We got the tasting menu which had a lot of food (if two people order it from your party) for each person. The squid ink croquets were an interesting part, as were the seared octopus tentacles. All delicious and more than enough to fill you up. We had a couple bottles of wine and the server was able to help us select one that was amazing. read more

The main reason for the low score was the awful service. As soon as we walked in, the hostess said something to a co-worker and they both looked at us and laughed. We were then seated at a very small table. I was in a knee brace so we asked to be seated at a larger table (which I saw they had) and they just said "no" despite the fact that we made a reservation. Our waiter (tall, skinny, 5 o'clock shadow, glasses), was just straight up rude. The drink selection was limited and our waiter said they wouldn't make us simple drinks because they weren't on the menu. For food, we just ordered croquettas and the waiter laughed at us saying "that's all you want?' Basically, the entire vibe of this place was awful and if you are not from Spain, I wouldn't suggest eating here because they clearly don't appreciate tourists. read more

Ok please keep in mind that this review is from an American vacationing in Madrid and Europe for the first time. This restaurant was recommended by a friend for our 20th anniversary dinner. Hands down best ambiance of any restaurant I've ever been to. I won't go over history because plenty of reviews have done that. This is an upscale restaurant due to pricing and ambiance however dress was from casual to dressy. Men wore shorts, jeans and tennis shoes to slacks and polos. Women wore nice dressy shorts with heels, to sundresses, dresses with heels. Pretty much anything goes but I wanted to dress up for our special occasion. We don't speak Spanish and our servers spoke enough English for us to get by but I don't think they were happy about it. We had a rotation of 3 different servers. Some seemed annoyed that we weren't immediately ready to order. The menus were both in Spanish and English. Water is a cost. Bread comes to the table there's a cost for that as well. I liked all of the food we had but my husband has been struggling with the food since we've been in Madrid. He is not adventurous at all. We ordered the angry eggs and zampurinos for starters. Although the eggs come in a spicy sauce, it's not spicy at all so don't let that deter you. The scallops (zampurinos) were good. For our entrees we had the oxtail roll and duck confit. Lots of great reviews on the duck and our server recommended it as well. Now this my husband enjoyed. I liked the oxtail roll, there's no bone and the queso it comes in is good. Very tender and you get 3 rolls. I don't eat a lot of meat so I regret I didn't get one of the rice or pasta dishes that had no meat. Sounded good. Let me tell you about the bathroom because I wish this had been in someone else's review. Beautiful and clean bathroom first of all. One bathroom for everyone. Stalls are separated by signage in Spanish so I didn't realize I (female) was using a stall meant for men until I came out. Oops. Very spacious though lots of stalls. Our whole dining experience was an hour and a half. Service was actually pretty fast. Not rude but no extra accommodations either. We had a reservation for 8:30 which is when they open. Good thing, by the time we left they were packed. Not all tables are private we noticed so I'm glad we had the early reservations. The outside looks non descript we almost missed it, but inside is absolutely gorgeous. Our total bill was 99 euros without any alcohol. I enjoyed the experience and would recommend for sure. Wouldn't return with my husband only because he couldn't appreciate the food but I did! read more

If you're a foodie, run away. I am really surprised at how positive the reviews are for this place. I found it across a number of lists, and on a list of personalized recommendations Amex sent me for my trip to Spain. My friend and I had our last dinner of a two week trip at this restaurant. It was a huge disappointment. We are both very adventurous eaters and she is a chef, so we are definitely foodies. I picked this place for the caves, but lots of other reviews were outstanding so I had high hopes. We ordered a wide range of dishes, more than we needed, so that we could try everything. Overall, everything was sweet and did not generally taste made from scratch. The croquettes were oddly really good, and that is where our joy ended. She had a ravioli dish that was bland and forgettable. I had a seared tuna dish recommended by our server that was not compelling at all, and was doused in an overly sweet sauce that tasted straight from a jar. We also had an oxtail dish that was swimming in two sauces. No texture, nothing tasted fresh. Both of our desserts were very forgettable. This is just simply not worth your time or money. Cheesecake factory quality food. Go somewhere more interesting where they're not leaning entirely on the cool ambience, and then head to a museum or a flamenco show to see the caves. This is an absolute gem. Michelin 1*food quality. Fabulous underground cave ambience, excellent Service. The ox-tail roll was probably one of the best dishes I've had in Spain. The squid ink croquettes amazing. Tuna tartare two ways fabulous. On the fish side, the crocker was perfectly prepared. Excellent wines and wine service. The bonus: why does a superlative meal and experience cost about 40% less than in LA! And that was our experience all over Spain. Secretos is a must stop in Madrid. This really IS a secrete bodega. The restaurant was previously a war bunker turned wine cellar. It's a little scary to dine here during COVID because there's little ventilation but the ambience makes up for the risk (and if you're vaxxed and boosted, it's probably okay.) Great pick for a date or family gathering. Feel free to chat away in your own private dining alcove. Like many restaurants in Europe, we opted for the prix fixe menu. I'd dine here again for the ambience but the food wasn't all that memorable. read more

La Bodega de Los Secretos is located inside a three hundred year old tunnel in the heart of Madrid.  Not surprisingly, the atmosphere within and without is quite unique and more than a bit special - they'll happily give you a tour if you ask for one :-) Our dining experience here was exceptional from beginning to end - the service was impeccable and the food was simply amazing! Everything we tried that evening tasted wonderful, but the duck was extraordinary!  The prices here are more than a little on the high side, but given the quality it's worth every Euro :-) I wouldn't hesitate to return at my next opporutnity, and I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something exceptional and a bit different! read more

This a subterranean gem located in a renovated wine cellar. Many of the tables are located in individual brick/stone alcoves which are very intimate and great for a romantic dinner. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. I especially recommend the Grilled Octopus starter, the Duck Confit with Caramelized Apples, and the Mojito sorbet. Me and my friend went to this restaurant because it is in old wine cellars and that alone should convince you to go. The restaurant it's self is too cool to pass up. The atmosphere is private and perfect for a date night. She got mushroom risotto which was very good and I got mushroom ravioli which was just okay. I didn't like the texture of it. We got the chocolate lava cake with mango ice cream and cheesecake for dessert. Both were very good. Over all I would highly recommend. Maybe just don't get the ravioli. read more

With limited time in Madrid, I really wanted to make every meal count, and Bodega de Los Secretos was an excellent choice for a romantic meal. We were able to score a table at the last minute, though had to settle for an early seating, around 8:30pm. The restaurant was practically empty upon our arrival, which was actually really nice as much of the seating is tucked into nooks in the cellar of Madrid's oldest winery. We were on a gin and tonic kick and our drinks were poured tableside in generous portions. We started with and amuse bouche from the kitchen, followed by the ham croquettes and grilled octopus with potato foam and hot pepper oil. The octopus was absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend the dish. My husband and I both opted for fish entrees which were nice, though my hake entree was very similar to the octopus in terms of flavor profile. Not a bad thing, just not very different. We passed on dessert and finished our meal with one last drink. While I may opt for something different next time I'm visiting Madrid, I'm glad I got the opportunity to dine here because it was a really unique experience! read more

Housed in Madrid's oldest winery, they say this underground restaurant has 400 years of history and definitely made a mark in my personal history as it's where I got engaged. That being said, I'll be honest that the whole meal was kind of a blur but I will do my best to recount. What makes this place so romantic (and thus a great spot to propose) is that there are little enclaves all around that make for a really private setting. There were other people dining in the restaurant but we couldn't see anyone. The restaurant is quite big so there are lots of different areas to seat large parties if you're not necessarily looking for a private meal for two. The menu features traditional Spanish tapas and entrees. We ordered a range of tapas to share including croquetas de jamon, jamon iberico, pulpo a la brasa, and an egg and potato dish that I can't remember the name of. Of course, there was bread and some delicious olives on the side. Honestly, we wanted to order 10+ dishes from the sound of the menu, but sharing these four tapas between two was more than enough. Everything was so delicious, although I'll admit I was a little high from the proposal. The whole staff was kind and attentive, while also giving us our privacy. Our bill came to around 80 euros for the food and water, which seemed just about right. We didn't order wine because our friends gifted a bottle of champagne, but I did see they had a nice and affordable wine list. I'm so happy my now fiancé chose this as the place to pop the question. I can't wait to return for another meal the next time we're back in Madrid! Pro tip: You're underground so there is no cell service! The restaurant doesn't open until 8:30, but people in Madrid eat late anyways. The restaurant got busier as time went by. The food was delicious. We ordered the octopus and quinoa salad to start. The octopus was wonderfully cooked and had a nice char to it. The salad was pleasant and a good refreshing start. Between the four of us, we had two ox tails, and two fish - one hake and one corvina. Everything was delicious! Both of the fish were light, not meaty or hard to chew. The ox tail looked small, but it was a lot of meat. It was very flavourful and well seasoned. The pureed sauce that came with it added a nice balance too. The servers were friendly and accommodating. Our main dishes were quite slow, but it's because they had an accident or something. This was a great experience, very upscale and romantic with underground table lit brick alcoves to make you feel as if you were the only one in the place. Food and wine were reasonably priced for the quality that we received. The grilled octopus was an excellent way to start the evening, prepared with truffle oil and a potato purée, I had the risotto with asparagus and mushrooms which was prepare perfectly and my wife had ravioli stuffed with peppers and light but flavorful green sauce. Absolutely breathtaking. I have dined all over and can honestly say this is the most romantic place I've ever been. Very trendy interior, modern twist that accentuates the rustic attributes of the cellar that make it so stunning. Every corner is artfully put together and the attention given to us was impressive. We had the owner himself give us a tour of the entire restaurant and explain the rich history of the venue to the last detail (over half an hour of his time). Let's not forget the excellent food - Honest pricing and quality ingredients. The ceviche, croquetas and rabo de toro were perfect to go with the delectable tempranillo.
